Rita Ora in Vivienne Westwood

Posted on November 28, 2012

This dress lost all its impact the more we looked at it.

Rita Ora attends the British Fashion Awards 2012 in London in a Vivienne Westwood gown.

The color’s gorgeous and the basic shape looks great on her, but in typical Westwood style, there’s just too much going on with the pinning and the draping and the weird ribbon-like things running down the front. A Monet of a dress; great from across the room, but harder to take the closer you get to it. And we know it’s her thing, but her hair’s looking awfully fried here. We don’t really think the heavy, bronze-y eye makeup was the way to go either. It suits her own coloring, but it doesn’t suit this dress.

I don’t know if I’m imagining it, but I feel like in the pics of her from the side, you can see the top of her nipple. ¬†Maybe it’s just a shadow, or like they said in Boomerang, it’s a shadow of a nipple, but either way the top is too droopy.

    • DeborahJozayt

Oooh! I see it, too! We both get Subway gift cards now, right?

      • MrsMaxPower

Hahaha…that was glorious! You, my dear, get extra Subway gift cards as reward for your wit. ūüėČ

        • DeborahJozayt

          Meatball sub here I come!

  • hughman

I have no idea how tall this Rita chick is but I assume she’s a pocket celeb like most. This dress really looks like she needs to stand up straight.¬†

  • Her natural beauty is completely overshadowed by that awful hair. I can’t see past it. She would look absolutely gorgeous with darker hair.¬†

    • mshesterp

Seriously! ¬†It totally washes her out. ¬†I don’t think it looks fried so much as it is the color.

I think she’s looking pretty slammin’ in the dress. ¬†if she’s the Brit version of RiRi, bring it on, I say. ¬†I’m ready for a replacement!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

My first thought when I saw this pic was that RiRi was in the house.

        • TRSTL

I had the exact same reaction……did you catch her on the Rockefeller Center special last night? Her opening number “costume” can only be described as “tit-tastic tree topper drag”.

    • the hair is seriously hideous

  • schadenfreudelicious

wow that is some seriously scary hair..fried with awful regrowth around her forehead….i’ve seen healthier looking hair on a Warhol fright wig…

  • Sara__B

She needed her hair and makeup styled 100% differently to keep
this revealing gown looking classy instead of cheap. (If “cheap” is the look
she was going for, she nailed it!) Gowns like this are better left to Dita von Teese, or even Helena Bonham Carter.

  • A. W.

An imperfect look to say the least, but that blue is amazing on her. She looks like a fierce ice queen.

  • Allison Woods

Looks like it’s slowly sliding off of her.

    • buildmeatower

¬†Seriously. As I scrolled down I kept thinking it was slipping lower and lower down her. I know it isn’t, but it looks like it should be.

  • Nicholas

She needs to Amber Rose that hair, if she doesn’t want to dye her roots. She could probably pull it off anyway.

  • Judy_S

OK, this is strange, but I find that the trampy hair and makeup with that particular gown on such a young woman is rather appealing. She looks ready to take the Monroe part in “the Prince and the Showgirl.”¬†

    • julnyes

Noooooooooo .. Monroe is glamorous and seductive not trampy!

  • m0r0

looks too tight around her waist. without a model pick or a photo on whom it looked as intended it’s hard to have any idea of what she was going for. ick

  • Mike Owens

The problem isn’t the dress. The problem is she’s just one big accessory, not including the jewelry. The dress is accessory enough.¬†

  • DCSheehan

This dress is crazy! But it works on her. But I irrationally love this girl so I’m biased.

  • StellaZafella

The dress – color wise – is babydoll. The hair and make up are Vixen.

I’m sure the dress looked great in motion.

(If I imagine her hair dark, I start getting Natalie Wood…no?)

  • unbornfawn

I kinda like the dress. From the neck up she looks like a junkie.

  • She looks like a Botticelli painting, absolutely lovely. I don’t even mind the fried hair.

  • Prolixity Julien

My main concern is that it needs to be hoisted up a couple of inches.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

No disagreement with my favorite uncles on this dress. I do love the color, but there is a bit too much wickety-whack going on.¬† I’ll be pleased when that trend in eye make-up goes away, too.

  • Contralto

She’s very cute but I prefer her wackier incarnations.

  • alyce1213

The dress needs a better woman inside it.

  • Imasewsure

Looks great from the neck down but she can’t pull off a classic look with that hair and makeup… gotta go full on N. Minaq trashy n’ campy or she has to do actual glamor to rock this dress…. as was stated earlier, this is Dita’s dress and Rita is an amateur

  • Trisha26

These droopy “shoulder/sleeve” situations are just strange. They’re supposed to give the illusion of something improper happening, then you realize it’s all by design, then it just looks sloppy. Her makeup is off and I don’t care for the dark brows.

  • It’s like her head doesn’t match the dress.

  • Cute at first glance, zombie bride at second.¬†

  • snarkykitten

I can’t get over that horrible lipstick. I guess this is a thing now.

  • I don’t like the looks-like-it’s-falling-off style dress at all. Agree on make-up assessment.

  • another_laura

oh nononononono. ¬†This dress is really not working. ¬†It looks like it was supposed to be stretched out onto some 6′ glamazon and that they put it on this wee thing without adjusting the ribbony bits. ¬†What a mess! ¬†(like the fabric, though)

  • margaret meyers

The fabric looks cheap and the dress is bunching-up around her waist because it hasn’t been fitted properly.
Don’t get me started on her hair.¬† The pinned in augmentation is supposed to give the illusion that you have madly thick beautiful hair, not like you’ve pinned in a bunch of too-blond synthetic hair. She needs better advice if she wants to develop her own beauty because this kind of stuff is not going to help her career.

    • ¬†I’ve seen worse in Britain, from bigger ‘celebs’. I kind of like the slightly ombre effect, it’s popular right now with the youth.

  • I want Kate Winslet to wear this dress 17 years ago. That is all.

  • quiltrx

I like the front of the dress, but the back gets all bizarre (and I bet it was hard to sit down in).¬† And I don’t understand why it’s falling off her teats…like there’s not enough substructure to hold it up.¬† And I despise her hair, and this dress color with that hair makes her look incredibly washed-out.

  • librarygrrl64

Her hair and makeup constantly distract me from everything she wears.

  • Jackie4g

That’s a gorgeous piece of fabric! The top is just plain silly and¬†Miss Rita, please do your roots.

  • plinkiedoodle

    Love this!!!

  • Call me Bee

I don’t know this person, but she is a hot mess.¬† Ugly hair, bad makeup and god-awful dress.¬† Someone should have told her to go back home.¬†

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

i don’t think this is her dress. she should leave it for charlize theron to wear to the globes. plus everything about the styling is completely off. if you are going for a rita ora look, then pick a rita ora dress and the styling is fine. this is not. either go against your image with a dress like this, or just don’t wear it.

  • What is it with the upholstery fabrics today?¬† Brocade….ugh.¬† But the color is killer, especially with the silver sheen to it.¬† Her hair may indeed be fried but the style is great for her, I think. ¬†

  • crash1212

I really love this dress it just needs to be hoisted up a couple of inches. I’m not in love with anything going on north of her neck.

  • TSkot

    Girl, that’s not your dress… or hairstyle… or makeup… or…

  • Who IS this person?¬† Why is this a thing?

  • Corsetmaker

I like the dress. I appreciate Westwood can be a bit love or hate. But I love, and love that she’s one of the few designers whose gowns are built onto proper structure.
But, I don’t think Rita Ora is doing it any favours. However, hats off to her for going for it at a relatively early stage in her career and not just going for shock, as people usually do to get the column inches!

  • I don’t know why but I think this was meant as a funny take on “glamour”. I see Jayne Mansfield who never took herself very seriously. I think drag queens all over are taking notes.

    • margaret meyers

I was getting¬†the¬†irony, but I think she looks like she’s making fun of some of the early ethnic performers, women who tortured their hair and makeup and painted on the pancake to look more like white performers.¬† Would that be ironic?

  • Brilliant analogy to Monet!¬† It describes the effect perfectly and my diminishing responsiveness to endless water lillies

  • Is it just me, or does it look like the dress is just slowly sliding off her body at the top?
I like the bottom part, but not the top. Too much craziness going on. Gorgeous fabric, though!

  • SewingSiren

Full on camp glamour. Love it.

  • Diego!

    Who is she?

I like the dress fine enough, VW does the overworked better than most. But that HAIR!!!! oy……..

  • B_C_J

The dress is wonderful if you like Vivienne Westwood. The color, fabric and the construction are marvelous. However, Ms. Ora needs to wash her face and redo the makeup. As for the hair……….sigh.¬†

  • Judy_J

That dress looks like it’s melting.¬† I love the fabric, but something about the constuction and the fitting makes it appear that the bodice is heading south.

  • Dot

I don’t know what possessed her to pair dirty looking hair and makeup with this gown, which looks like it’s slowly sliding off of her.

  • VicksieDo

I hate her hair so much, it matters not what she’s wearing.

  • This may be a case of “Girl, that’s not your dress.” I suspect Eva Mendes or maybe even Cameron Diaz could rock this frock.

  • She was Def Jam’s contingency plan just in case Rih Rih fell off. But that’s not really happening, so…there you are. She does have actual talent, I just don’t think they have a clue what to do with it.

Right now she’s in that awkward stage where Rihanna was a couple of years ago- management wanted her to look like a Bajan Beyonce (who really was a Memorex J-Lo *sips tea*), and it didn’t work. Once she cut her hair off and separated herself, she was good to go. They’d be much better off getting rid of the fried blonde hair and not making her videos look like a Gwen Stefani knockoff in a discarded Rihanna treatment.

Which is my beef with this dress- this is not a Rita Ora dress. She needs to find a “Rita Ora style” and go with that.¬†

  • Pants_are_a_must

The more I see her on this blog, the more I think “like Rihanna, but with CLASS.” Which isn’t really true, considering her poor, overly peroxided hair. And also sad.

  • l_c_ann

Was this particular boob coverage Westwood’s default treatment for 2012?

We’ve seen this so many places, mostly badly worn.¬† Does it have a name?¬†

I would guess there is significant boning tied into a waist structure to give the two peaks in front of the armpits.¬† The problem is that the significant boning isn’t enough to support la Hendrick’s assests and doesn’t seem to do enough for this young lady, either.

  • Verascity

Her makeup looks like mine does when I fall asleep in it.

  • Kate4queen

I just want to yank it up and fuss with the bodice like I’m her mother or something…

  • decormaven

If her stylist can score a Vivienne Westwood gown, surely to Hannah someone can get this gal a better hair stylist. A new hair style could really elevate her to the next level of glam.

  • I’m guessing she stood there the whole night. No way could she move, let alone sit in that dress.

I do think she and the dress are gorgeous though. Fried hair, but maybe that’s her thing? Guessing cause I have no idea who she is.

  • rh33

I’m thinking Walk of Shame. Or Lindsay Lohan is my stylist…

  • Susan Collier

The gown looks like it’s sliding down a bit more in each photo.

  • afabulous50

Who is she?  She needs her roots done.

  • Anathema_Device

This woman always looks horribly tacky to me, and not in a fun way. The dress is really pretty from the front but not so much from the back.

  • You are on crack. ¬†This dress is a piece of art and she looks great!! ¬†But yes, hair could be a tad less fried.¬†

  • myristica_fragrans

i only like this look because the color of the dress looks beautiful with her skin.i’ve never seen her without a red lip, so i love what he’s done this time.

more importantly, when are we gonna start talking about the high waisted pants/jumpsuit thing that stella mccartney wore to this?

  • Rebecca Jay

More of the shit-colored nails, this time with a shimmer.

  • barbarienne

I desperately want to tie suspenders to the top of that dress and hoist it back up where it belongs. I feel like if she walks down steps, the jostling will cause a complete wardrobe malfunction.

Don’t even get me started on the ass-origami. Assigami.

Her hair doesn’t bother me in concept, but the dark roots are killing me. In picture 2, especially, it looks like she’s wearing a wig that’s sliding off. That’s the whole feel I get about this outfit–one wrong step and the ass will unfold, the top will fall down, and her hair will slide off. She looks ready to come apart. If I were present, I would spend the whole night following her with a video camera, waiting for the fateful moment.

  • MilaXX

It’s like she’s playing it too straight.
