Michelle Obama in Michael Kors

Posted on November 07, 2012

FOUR MORE YEARS … of Shelley O dresses to talk about, darlings!

U.S. President Barack Obama stands on stage with first lady Michelle Obama after his victory speech on election night at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois.

Which is good, because we weren’t looking forward to the series of shitstorms headed our way if we criticized Anne Romney’s style choices.

Once again, FLO demonstrates her style savvy: she wore this red brocade Michael Kors dress once before, to present the Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta in the East Room of the White House on November 16, 2010. She knows she would have been vilified if she walked out wearing some expensive new frock at a time like this. And both FLO and PO were smart: he’s wearing blue and she’s wearing red. That kind of stuff registers on a subconscious level; offering a picture of national unity (even if it’s not exactly accurate).

She looks great. The color and shape are fantastic on her and for once, we don’t even mind the cardigan. It works.

The girls look cute too. Was Malia cloned from one of Shelley’s cells or something? We’d call her FLO’s mini-me, except she’s not so mini anymore.

And please, guys. We’re begging you; don’t make us spend all day moderating the comments section. Keep the political rants out of the discussion. It was a very good night for gay people in this country. In fact, it was a historically good night for gay people; the most pro-gay election night ever. Don’t shit on that. And if you feel the need to shit on that, then criticize her dress if it makes you feel better.

  • I KNEW you were going to lead with this pic! Brilliant! Thank you Americans, for making the right decision.

Also, I am going to be churlish and say I don’t like the brooch with this dress, but I suspect there is some deep important reason for wearing it that someone is going to mention. And Mrs Biden is looking fabulous! I love that detail on her dress.

    • MilaXX

Dr. Biden’s hair was giving me life last night. She’s not as flashy as Shelly, but I think she more than holds her own.

      •  I agree. She manages to look like her own woman, not a *wife* if that makes sense.

      • kschwarting

Definitely.  She’s super-smart and stylish in her own right.

      • Sobaika

Also on the Dr. Biden Is A Gem Train. So underrated.

        • librarygrrl64

She seems like someone I’d want to hang out with. Super-smart and down-to-earth.

    • CMSmith1848

I think Dr. B is underrated. She looks damn good most of the time. Very nice stuff that I envy!!

      • Rand Ortega

This. I’m too tired & overjoyed w/ MD & ME to say more.

      • ComeLetsTalk

I love Dr. Biden as well. She is clearly comfortable in her own skin. Love her too.

    • frannyprof

I’m glad you mentioned Jill Biden’s dress! I think she looks great, too.

    • gabbilevy

That third photo is totally making me tear up… could just be that I got only 4 hours of sleep after covering last night’s events. Or because they are a *phenomenal* example of a modern, equal, gorgeous marriage for *all* Americans.

  • malia’s looking FIERCE.

    •  My oldest two daughters are the same age as Sasha and Malia, down to just a few months apart for each.   I love watching those girls grow up and always dress so nicely, If only I looked as fabulous when I’m out with my girls as FLO does with hers.    Maybe Kors could help me out, too?

And, I’m doing such a happy dance for the marriage equality votes last night!

    • MissAnnieRN

Seriously – Malia kind of stole the show?  I feel like I’ve been paying attention the last 4 years, but when she stepped out on stage, I thought “Oh, Mr. President, do you have your hands full!  Running a country and trying to protect that drop dead gorgeous daughter of yours!”  It was like she went through puberty overnight or something.  But probably I haven’t been paying enough attention 🙂  Or the O’s are good about keeping them out of the spotlight.

      •  My husband said the Secret Service coverage of our daughter would be the only reason to take that job.

      • Obama doesn’t need to worry. He can just sick the secret service on them. How many dads have an armed entourage as part of their job?

        • kat89

The Secret Service is only supposed to protect the girls from physical harm. If Sasha and Malia smoke pot, underage drink or shoplift, the Secret Service is not allowed to interfere. Remember when the Bush twins were drinking underage and people asked why the Secret Service didn’t stop them? They’re not allowed. They don’t get paid to babysit or interfere, just protect.

          • kcarb1025

The reason a (well-adjusted) dad would like his daughter[s] to have Secret Service protection has nothing to do with smoking pot or shoplifitng.

      • It’s funny, I’m always jealous of girls who are pretty as teenagers because I was PROFOUNDLY awkward from like 12 to 17. It wasn’t an awkward PHASE, it was like an awkward CHUNK OF MY LIFE.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

So was I -junior high and high school were filed in my mind under AWKWARD.

        • alyce1213

Can you imagine — that this is HER awkward phase, and how utterly magnificent she will be when she comes through it?

        • CozyCat

If you want to know how much WORSE it is to go thru your awkward phase as First Daughter, go back and look at the press that poor Amy Carter got.

          •  I know, poor Amy!  And back then they were nicer than they would be now. That or they are terrified of being labelled racist.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I think that as the Clintons did with Chelsea the Obamas have worked very hard to keep the girls out of the media glare.

    •  Another four years and Malia’s going to be a super model.

    • YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No lie, I’m slightly more impressed with her look than I am with Michelle’s. She CLEARLY inherited her mom’s style savvy.

  • hmariec19

    Holy shit Malia is tall.

    Yayyyyyy America!
And everyone looks pretty.  That is all.

    • NC_Meg

I am always floored at how tall Malia is. It’s not like she had a chance to be short but she’s almost as tall as her dad and she’s only 14!

      • Rand Ortega

1 of the wonks (might have been Jason Cherkis) commented on Twitter that the President’s main concern in the next few months isn’t the debt ceiling but he’s about to become the shortest member of his family.

      • I’m 5’8″ and have been since I was 13. She may not get any taller – some of us sprout early.

        • NJtoLAMary

I think girls hit max height at puberty and that’s pretty much it. I was 5’10” when I was 12 and I still am.

          • kimmeister

That’s true most of the time, but not always.  I was the same height from 16-19, when all of a sudden I popped out another half inch at 19.  I only went to check because my shoe size was suddenly half a size bigger.

          • Whever

Yeah, me too. I graduated high school at 17 and when I went back to visit a couple years later, I realized I’d grown about two inches since then.

          • Tapetum

Not across the board. I went and grew another full inch sometime during college. Of course my family runs to really late maturation. I didn’t hit menarche until 16, and my 14-year-old boy is only just showing the first vestiges of puberty. I’ve been telling his pediatrician for years now that no, really, he wasn’t going to end up short. This is the first year he’s believed me, as the sprout has suddenly started growing.

          • I have this in my family, too. It’s called Constitutional Growth Delay. I didn’t finish growing until I was 22. I thank goodness, because I thought I’d be 4ft 11″ forever, but I eked out a few more inches and made it to 5’5″ in the end, mostly in college. And my brother, who entered HS at 5′, is now 6’4″. Nevertheless, I was SHOCKED to see Malia last night. She blew me away. She’s a young lady, no doubt, and lovely. Lucky to have such a role model for a mom, too.

          • Females can go through puberty until their mid-20s. I spent all of high school and college with a chest that looked like a little boy. I turned 24 and grew to a size C without any added weight gain.

          • I was the same (chest-wise), it was just the height that hit me early!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

13 was when I reached my adult height, too. It  can work that way for girls more often than boys, I think.

          • Yep, me too. 5’9″ at age 13 and that was the end of it. Though my feet kept growing…and growing…and growing.

          • schadenfreudelicious

5’10” by age 12 for me…it was rather painful to be taller than every boy in junior high, no complaints now though 🙂

          • My feet are STILL growing, and I’m 66. 🙁

          • zoreta

I hit my adult height at age 13 as well- all 5’2″ of me. For a while I held out hope that I got my brother’s constitution (he was a late bloomer and kept growing until he was 25), but then my dad figured he should let me know that his mother- who I closely resemble- never reached 5’3″. So much for that!

        • J. Preposterice

She might not get any taller, but look at her standing next to her dad in ballet flats — she’s got to be nearly 6′.

        • NC_Meg

That’s true. That happened to me but I only reached 5’1″. Womp womp womp.

      • j_anson

She might have grown as much as she’s going to, though. I was done growing by 12 or 13.

      • Wellworn

My niece was 6 feet tall by the age of fourteen and that’s where she stopped.  It was the pre-period growth spurt lots of girls go through, plus she has tall parents.  I am the shortest in the family by far.

    • CMSmith1848

She was also in the flatest flats they could find so that she was not taller than her dad!!

  • MoHub

Proud Marylander loving the looks of the entire First Family.

    • Proud Maryland Bitter Kittens unite!  And yeah, they look great.  I, for one, envy Malia’s height.  I also want her skirt, but I fear that without her height and at more than twice her age, I couldn’t really pull it off.  SIGH.

      • AthenaJ

This bitter kitten is hoping my home state of Pennsylvania (also home to TLo!) will be one of the next states to get with the program! Great job Maryland and Maine!!

        • funkycamper

Don’t forget my wonderful Washington State.  We also voted in support of gay marriage (and legalized pot, too).

          • Maybe I should move to Seattle after all. I kinda missed the original boat, back in 1992-ish.

          • AthenaJ

I only saw reports on ME and MD, that’s great about WA! (and the pot thing isn’t too bad either 🙂

          • angela rose

we can all get high at a gay wedding!  moving to Washington STAT.

          • That is hilarious!!!

        • J. Preposterice

For serious, PA.  Get on the fuckin’ bus.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

This Maryland BK has been bursting into tears of joy that we passed Question 6….so very, very happy about that today.

      • I wonder how she feels about being almost 6’0″ at whatever teen age she is. I am only 5’9″ and I felt so uncomfortable, I was taller than everyone since 7th or 8th grade. Everyone catches up 6 years later.

On the other hand now I really like being tall when I’m teaching yoga I like to stand on things so I’m taller than all the students.

    • miagain

From across the Potomac… yeah Maryland!!  Very proud of the Free State!!

      • MoHub

And for bonus points, my sister lives in Maine, which also did us proud!

    • patticake1601

       Our state rocks!!!

      • Great — now I have make an honest person out of my partner of 30 years.  White won’t be worn!  Happy from Maryland!  😀

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Consider you and your partner virtually toasted as we Marylanders celebrate.   I’m so looking forward to dancing at our niece’s wedding next year-and the bonus is, we’ll gain another wonderful niece through that marriage!

        •  Congratulations gentlemen!

    • VanessaDK

       YAY Maryland!!!

  • tsid2012

It was a good noght indeed!  Do we know who Dr. Biden is wearing? From what I can see I am liking that blue dress on her.  I think the girls all look great here!

    • agreed! jill looks terrific, such a cute dress!

    • Agreed — she always looks amazing.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I love Dr. Biden and her style.  Never flashy, never upstaging, always seems to hit the right notes.  Joe’s a lucky dude.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I think Joe would agree with you!

    •  Yes! I want to see pictures and info on the VFlotus too!

  • mozzer0906

proud to be a Marylander to voted for Question 6 today!  <3

    • miagain

You should be proud… well done!!

    • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Yes, it’s a great day to be from Maryland.  The president was re-elected, we passed Question 6 and we don’t have to listen to all those ads aimed at Virginia anymore (until the next election).  What a beautiful family.

      • 3boysful

How about no more attack ads and robo-calls for a long time–whoohoo!!

xoxo– A Native Marylander now in NC (which still has a long way to go)

        • SRQkitten

As a Floridian, I have to concur! SO happy to have the attack ads and calls done – my dh registered as independent and this year was NOT the year to do that, we were getting calls from everyone.

Of course FL is still counting votes. [sigh]

  • KSpence

Their kids are so pretty and sharp!

(And I like Shelly O’s dress, too.)

  • rloliveira

What a fabulous night it was. All the Obama’s look beautiful. And let’s not forget Jill Biden. I love her dress–she looks wonderful too.

  • Wait, no love for Jil Biden’s dress? She totally WERKed it.

  • lol, I thought Malia was FLO in the thumbnail!!!

    • MK03

I did too, when they all took the stage. I thought “oh, Shelley looks nice–holy shit, that’s MALIA??”

  • stoprobbers

Are you gonna talk about Jill Biden’s dress too? Cuz I saw her and yelped “GIVE ME YOUR DRESS.” All the women on stage last night — Sasha and Malia included — looked FAB!

  • Jessica O’Connell

YAY for the FLOTUS’ pretty pre-worn dress and YAY for gay people! Was just about jumping up and down when I heard about Question 6 in MD. YAY!

Also, agreed on Malia and Michelle…it’s almost eerie how much she looks like her. And Sasha is quickly looking more and more like the POTUS. Some good genes in those gorgeous girls. They both look adorable too.

    • It’s funny: I used to think Malia was Barack’s clone and Sasha was Shelley’s, but this picture changes everything!

    • MK03

See, I think Malia looks just like her dad and Sasha looks just like her mom. They both hit the gene pool jackpot, though.

  • ojosazules

Our First Lady looks so beautiful and happy in her beautiful, sensible, dress!!

  • Can we talk about how FANTASTIC Jill Biden looks. That dress is to die for. And it flatters her so well. Who made it? And what workouts do I need to do to look like that?

  • lovelyivy

I turned around twice and Malia Obama was a freakin supermodel in training. What happened to the nation’s cute little girl? Sniff. Ah well. Yaaaaaaaay good-looking first family! And YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY EQUALITY!!!

    •  I loved the line in his speech about one dog being enough – who would have thought that just 4 years ago those elegant young women were being bribed with a puppy?

  • Maine1ac

I was a little surprised and quite thrilled at what appears to be a huge step in one night, for acceptance of both gay rights and legalizing marijuana.  Did not see that coming, maybe I should pay better attention.

    • editrixie

Honestly, I’m STUNNED at the pot thing here in Washington. Just stunned. So much of our state is massively conservative outside the Seattle voting bloc, and even the part that isn’t has been really really hesitant to do anything that could be considered pro-drug usage.

We’re still counting ballots here too — we have voting by mail only now — but cautiously optimistic on Ref. 47 for marriage equality.

      • Adriana_Paula

As an Idaho resident, I can only look on and sigh.  Congrats, WA.  Especially on gay marriage.

  • Kimbolina

Everyone looks so great here!  The girls look beautiful.

It’s funny cause when Michelle Obama first walked out, my first thought was, Ooh, she’s wearing red, I see what she did there!

    • roadtrip1000

Yes, and a nicely toned down red at that.

  • MoHub

The Bidens look pretty damn good, too!

  • She looks amazing, she is amazing. It was certainly a historic night and I think we can only go up from here. Truly a beautiful family.

  • xay

It was a great election night. The girls look great! Dr. Biden looks gorgeous.

….I don’t like FLOTUS’s dress.  But her hair and makeup are on point.

  • Such a beautiful family. They just seem so genuinely close and affectionate; it warms my heart!

Also, last night was a terrific night for the LGBT community and its allies. And baby, this momentum is just getting started! I can’t wait to continue the fight for equality and see what progress the next few elections bring!

  • Carrieanno

Please show the kids occasionally over the next four years (but no critiques!  They’re still children; that’s off limits.).  They’re an absolute breath of fresh air in a world where young girls/girl celebs are trying to appear grown up way too fast.  Dr. Jill B deserves periodic mentions too.

  • Clueless_Jock

She looks great. Congrats to the Obama and family.

  • Joe J

Yes, FLO is fierce as always!

And congratulations to Tammy Baldwin as well!  You rock that vote, Wisconsin!

    • wisenhar

Don’t forget Mark Pocan who took Tammy’s old House seat.  It was so cool to watch him kiss his husband during his acceptance speach.

      • lizajane1776

I did not know that about Mr. Pocan. Shows how much I pay attention to the spouses. Plus, it isn’t my district.
        Go, Mark!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

That is a First Family to be proud of, sartorially and otherwise.

  • CPK1

gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. Shelley looks fab, and Malia is incredible. Beautiful family!!!! And the Bidens look hot too.

  • She does look every inch the lovely, brilliant FLOTUS that she is.  Her husband’s suit was spot on, both girls looked awesomely adorable, and I could not be better pleased.

  • tresfabuleux

The Obamas all looked great last night–super thrilled for even more Shelley O style posts! And quick political sidenote: as a gay man I am THRILLED with the results for equality in the four states where it was up to a vote. 🙂

  • mommyca

OMG! I didn’t even contemplate losing Shelley… so 4 more years of a fabulous First Lady, just awesome!
    (also a proud Marylander here!)

  • dress_up_doll

Shelly looks lovely (although if I were the FLOTUS for a second term I would’ve gone for a new celebratory frock); good color, great silhouette and flattering to her athletic form. The girls look adorable. Love the fabric of Sasha’s dress. I think she’ll be the one to watch in years to come for herflair forfashion. I’m so happy for them and for us all!

    • Adriana_Paula

I bet there’ll be a splendid new gown for the inaugural ball(s).

  • Targettaste

I would never base my vote on the looks of a candidate’s family, but damn, they are so appealing.

  • TigerLaverada

A wonderful night all around. Shelley looks great, and, wow, Malia looks fantastic!

  • SapphoPoet

    Everyone looks wonderful.

  • Beautiful family. I think the girls look adorable. My, they are growing up fast! :]

  • miagain

Those girls dress better than me..(on most days)… they all look purdy…
    What a night…I’m exhausted!

  • mjude

Our 1st Lady looked absolutely great & those girls are just darling.  I loved Mrs. Biden’s dress too.

a good night for us all.

  • G

Californian here who couldn’t be prouder.  They look wonderful and happy and thank god equal rights for all.

  • Srw27

She looks beautiful & the girls are just as pretty as their mom….

  • lizajane1776

I had held it together last night, and this morning was just quietly happy about all the results.
But now? With these pictures? You guys have me weeping happy tears!

And Dr. Jill does look tremendous, too!

  • pugluv

She looks wonderful!!! Looking forward to another four years with this family!!!  This election was amazing!!!! I am overjoyed with the outcome!!!!!!!!!

  • Not a word to spare for Jill Biden’s obi belt or whatever’s going on over there? Jill’s not a bad dresser, you know.

  • DeborahJozayt

Why would you think we’d bitch you out if you criticized Ann Romney’s style choices? I don’t get that.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

I suspect TLo is suggesting that the blog would ‘enjoy’ an influx of new commentators hell bent on retaliating against any perceived slight, not that the regulars would bitch.

  • dsco3031

Love these shots, and couldn’t be happier about the election results!

But on a side note, Malia is quickly catching up to POTUS’ height, and he is not a short man. Those girls have inherited some excellent genes for sure.

  • B_C_J

The First Lady’s dress is beautiful. The style and the color are wonderfully flattering. I commend her as well for choosing something lovely but more importantly wearing something that she has worn previously. It says a lot about her sensitivity to the important issues of the day.

  • I loved the dress, and the girls looked equally as great.  Jill was equally as smashing. I just love the family love they share, regardless of political sides you can’t deny that the Obama-Biden ticket seems to genuinely like each other.

  •  I know it makes me shallow (though I am claiming my non-US status in defence) but my first thought on hearing the result was, ‘Oh good. TLo can keep doing Shelly O posts.’

  • Marti Thornton

When the Obama women stand together there are 10 miles of legs… what a lovely family. Jill Biden killed.

  • I an so glad Michelle Obama will be the First Lady for another four years. She is spectacular in every way.

  • I remember thinking in 2004 that if Pres. Obama was a two-term president, Malia would be 18 when he left office. I’ve so enjoyed watching those girls grow up. I’ve not seen others mention it, but I really think that Sasha favors Mrs. Robinson

All the women looked absolutely beautiful last night. Very happy to see Mrs. O wearing a Michael Kors dress. (I have such a soft spot for Kors because I’m a plus-size woman and he designs clothes for me that look a bit fashionable)

  • It looks like Malia has her dad’s smile, but yeah, spitting image of Shelley O.
I thought Anne Romney’s dress was kind of an offputting combination of shades of red. Was it plaid? It seemed a little too subtle for TV.
It looks like Ms. Biden’s dress has an interesting obi detail at the waist – can we get a better view of her?
A lot of good things happened last night. I am certainly whole-heartedly glad that gay issues were treated better than usual. I am also pleased with the legalizations of marijuana in two states, which should hopefully mean the beginning of a push to end the ridiculous failure that is the war on drugs.

    • MoHub

Also proud that Maryland passed the Dream Act.

  • charlotte

This is an admiring “Of Kors” because it seems so natural that this family is always looking gorgeous. Now we’re going to see these girls grow up for another four years!

  • A very good looking family!

  • A beautiful family! Those girls are growing up so nicely, and following in their mama’s style footsteps.

  • NDC_IPCentral

Hurrah on so many levels.  And four more years of White House fashion fun, too.  A minor (well, not to you gentlemen) additional benefit from the results yesterday.  I really like your noting the wisdom of Mrs. Obama wearing a dress she’s worn before, and man, I think it looks super on her.  The whole First Family looks great.

Thrilled, absolutely thrilled about the progress in the human rights arena.   The voice for productive, positive change for gay rights was unambiguous.  Our nation is becoming, in fits and starts, more inclusive, and I fervently hope that the momentum for inclusion is steady and unabated.

  • Hot dayum, I love our First Family. I was SO thrilled with the election results last night. And GO Maryland and Maine!! Good job, people.

FLOTUS looks gorgeous and man, those girls of hers are stunners.

  • It was a great night for women as well. They all look good. Really like the black and blue with the shot of hot pink on Malia. FLOTUS should take some pointers from her daughter there.

  • What gorgeous girls they have. And when it says a lot that when Michelle walked out I thought “Tom and Lorenzo would approve!”

  • jmorino08

Beautiful dress. That boat-neck-ish neckline really works for her. Also, that third picture gives me life!

  • What an absolutely fantastic First Lady you guys have. Also, I get a little teary-eyed from the shot where’s she’s hugging him from behind.

    • MilaXX

       Yes! I love their love.

      • ChiliP

         “I love their love.”

Me too. It’s just so palpable. The love they feel for each other, the love they feel for their beautiful daughters, the love their daughters feel for them…it just makes you smile.

    • Swoon…

  • Amy_R

    Yay FLO! Yay First Family!

  • kaycem

it was a good night for gay people, women, and weed.

    also america.

  • Judy_J

    What a beautiful First Family!

  • Anathema_Device

I called Malia a Michelle mini-me last. I love it when I’m on T & Lo’s wavelength. Love that dress on Michelle. Jill Biden looked AMA ing, too!

  • BrooklynBomber

I’m just freaking out because it looks like she has 3 hands!  Just kidding. She does look great. Is that sweater a bolero?  I wonder if Malia is still growing; what a stunner she’s turning out to be.

  • bookish

Thanks guys, I’ve been looking forward to this post this morning. 🙂 Everyone looks great, although I’m not sure why they put Sasha in green. Wasn’t this a night where it’s OK to dress everyone in patriotic colors? Anyway, hurray for the First Family!

    • tessasouthworth

And I LOVED the green just because it was was so non-traditional!

    • Adriana_Paula

Maybe it’s green for the environment!

  • mmc2315

I am so happy this morning!  Yay!

Michelle Obama is gorgeous.  I LOVE her!  I laughed with endearment when she walked out on stage wearing her little cardigan! Perfection, Shelley, perfection!

    Beautiful family!

  • MilaXX

When I heard she was wearing Kors I was hoping you would make a post about it. I think both Shelly and Kate do well with their dressing to suit the event. Kate has been smartly recycling her outfits since her engagement, and Shelly seems to have taken a clue from a pro.  Other than the typical stuff last night, I too marveled at how big the girls have gotten. Malia is indeed Shelley 2.0 in looks.

Now hopefully this Nor’easter doesn’t slam us to hard and the nation can calm down a bit.

  • When I saw Malia last night i said WOW!  And I’m proud to live in Maryland where i felt all emotional voting for marriage equality.

  • shirab

Per People’s website, she also wore the dress to a holiday party in 2009, so this makes three for the Kors. Good choice and good thinking, Shelley!

  • PaperPusher2

Our POTUS has got to be glad he’s got the Secret Service on his side.  Malia’s quite the stunner already and Sasha’s looking to follow right behind her.

  • mhleta

    So proud. Group hug. Bring it in, everybody. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{USA}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

  • schadenfreudelicious

As a Canadian let me say, Thank-you America 🙂

    • Coco Cornejo

Yeah, I guess there will be fewer of us immigrating to your country now. 😉

    • another_laura

I think you can take the Mounties off the barricades.

  • Wendy Wetzel

Such a gorgeous family!  Well done!

  • AthenaJ

It was a big night for forging more civil rights for gay people in this country (we’ve still got a long way to go though!), and keeping from rolling back a half century on women’s rights, as well! So proud we get to have Barack and Michelle in the White House for the next four years.
You hit the nail on the head with FLOTUS’s dress, the red color (clever), and the fact that it was already worn and not over the top. The girls look so pretty and classy, too… and the Bidens also look great!

  • SewingSiren

Beautiful family. Beautiful dress. Wonderful night.

  • Malia, Malia, Malia!

    [/Sasha aka Jan Brady]

    Well done, America!!!

  • Michelle looks so fabulous!  I love the dress.  I also love the picture of her arms around Barack.  They are such a great couple, and I think never before in our country’s history has there been such an image of partnership and collaboration between POTUS & FLOTUS.  I’m not saying that it hasn’t existed before, but that it’s never really been demonstrated visibly, and I LOVE it!  Just like with the fist bump years ago, you just get the impression that they are a solid team.  I adore them so!

    • zuzu

       Maybe FDR and Eleanor?

      •  Eleanor and FDR were partners of a sort, but she never forgave him for being unfaithful.  So I don’t think they were as together of a partnership as they appeared. #historynerd #loveFDRandEleanor

  • EEKstl

Shelley and the girls (and Mr. President) all look terrific. It’s funny, I always thought Malia was the spitting image of her dad, but seeing her and Shelley together she really does look like both of them.  Looking forward to four more years of a LOT of things, including great FLOTUS fashion.  And as a Missourian, I am especially happy this morning that sanity reigned in the Senate race.  Yay us!

  • Stephanie Jarvis

I need to know about Ms. Jill’s dress.

  • nannypoo

What a great first family. I especially love the third picture. It’s no surprise at all that she made the right fashion choice once again, and I love that she didn’t feel the need to buy a new dress for the occasion when she already had the perfect one hanging in her closet. POTUS is absolutely the coolest man alive and the girls are adorable.  In fact Malia, omigosh, she is absolutely stunning.

  • Such a handsome first family.

  • Sigh of relief – politically and sartorially speaking.

  • Pants_are_a_must

What a beautiful First Family! Happy morning in NY!

  • A B

In May of 2004 I urged my partner of 16 years to marry me the day we received our marriage license because I feared Mitt Romney, governor of Massachusetts at the time, would find a way to overturn the court ruling in MA.  Amazing that last night voters chose to legalize same sex marriage in 2 more states—I never would have believed it 8 years ago.
On the sartorial side, I like this dress so much more than the one Michelle wore for the speech in 2008 but I think I might like Jill Biden’s outfit even more.  Also, seeing the daughters looking so grown up makes me feel old.

  • L.

So happy/relieved/proud to be American today.  Are there actually bitter kittens/TLO regulars who are going to whine about pro-gay voting?  Progress marches along without them.

    • Violina23

FWIW, I’m a fiscal conservative, but socially liberal. (Sort of Libertarian-ish?) So while I don’t agree with all of the president’s economic policies, I am very happy that equality has taken steps forward. And Michelle Obama has kick-ass style, so who’d argue with more posts about that, whether she is the first lady or not?

  • Beverly Nash

Actually, Malia looks more like her dad and Sasha more like her mom.

  • withbreaththatisbaited

One of the best results of the night was that we would get four more years of Shelly O posts!

Happy to see her repeat pieces in her closet and it’s a beautiful, American-made dress. You’re right that the color does make an impression, if only subconsciously. I immediately said upon seeing her “She’s wearing red. Smart.” Also love Dr. Biden’s dress and the girls outfits are great too. Can’t believe how much they’ve changed in four years!

  • jw_ny

I knew when I saw her last night that Mrs. Obama would get a feature here today.  She looks fab!  The family looks fab!

Haha about the comment about the potential shitstorms of Mrs. Romney’s…so thankful we do not have to muddle through that.  🙂

Also…fantastic about the progress of gay rights/marriage equality!  woot!  🙂

  • I wasn’t crazy about this look, while it is a beautiful dress, to me it was too similar to her 2008 election night look and too dark.  I thought the girls looked great and Pres O too.

  • Coco Cornejo

I, for one, am so relieved that we got a decisive outcome last night. I wasn’t looking forward to weeks or months of legal wrangling to determine if we would get 4 more years of Shelly’s contemporary professional urban style or if we’d be switching over to 4 years of Anne’s classic better-half suburban style.

  • Pinup Ghoul

I need the outfit that Malia is wearing. She looks PERFECT!

  • jennmarie19

Funny, I always think Malia looks more like her dad and Sasha looks more like her mom. Regardless, what a lovely family. (And yay for gay rights! And for a record number of women in the Senate!)

    • Sasha looks very much like Stanley Anne Dunham, the President’s mother, I think. She’s going to be a lovely woman, but is still pretty much a tall little girl.

  • Our modern day Jackie K. has plenty more style lessons to impart. I share your joy she’ll get the chance! Nothings going to top that convention speech she gave, however.

  • They all looked BEAUTIFUL. Head to toe, beautiful clothes, beautiful people. And you can’t beat the genuine smiles.

  • bertkeeter

    It was a perfect night!

  • Can I just say, I love how much that man loves his family!  It’s so evident in pictures how much adoration there is amongst them.

    • I love the photo he tweeted and I cried when he said in his speech how the US has been able to fall in love with Michelle in the same way he has. How beautiful they are together. I can only dream that I could ever love someone (and be loved back) the way the two of them do.

  • Lilithcat

Malia has gotten friggin’ gorgeous.  Dad (and the Secret Service) will need to beat ’em off with a stick in a couple of years.

And talk about a huge night for equal rights!

Maine, Maryland, Minnesota (okay, guys, now that you’ve defeated the constitutional amendment, it’s time to repeal your statute!), maybe Washington.  So glad Tammy Baldwin won, too.  Iowa re-elected Justice David Wiggins, who had been targeted by anti-gay marriage activists.

There will be at least nineteen women in the Senate, a record.  Mourdock (“it’s God’s will”) and Akin (“legitimate rape causes the body to shut down”) were defeated.

The arc of the moral universe does, indeed, bend towards justice.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Malia has not only gotten friggin’ gorgeous, she’s damn near as tall as her Dad!

      • f_yeah_marie

And she’s wearing flats, from what it looks like in the photos…she may end up taller than her parents

    • bitchybitchybitchy

      Well said, Lilithcat!

  • I’m so happy today.  I know this is a partisan-free site but praise the Lord Jesus!!!!

  • tessasouthworth

So proud of how America voted on gay marriage and (mostly) the marijuana issue! Shoot, am even proud to be a Floridian from Palm Beach County today.  I always did love a pop of electric blue to set off a crimson background! Did Ms. Obama’s dress remind anyone else of the Narciso Rodriguez number she wore on Election Night 2008? Oh, and speaking of Narciso Rodriguez, thanks to TLo’s introduction to the line, I just celebrated last night’s victories by picking up and a few dresses and two coats at my local Kohl’s!

    • tessasouthworth

And can I just add how exhilarting it is to read so many overjoyed comments? A big group hug to the entire BK community and our two group leaders!

  • ellabob

Perfection in every way… what a relief!

  • That is one excessively attractive First Family right there, and I am thrilled that we get to look at them for another four years.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I’m just so happy for my LGBT friends and family that I can’t wipe the smile off my face.  But I wish she had ditched the cardigan.

  • i thought of you two last night.  i have many friends in the LBGT community, and i thought of all of you, and was so happy.  washington, maine, and maryland join a great list.  viva equality!

  • Nicely said, TLo!

  • GorgeousThings

I love that dress. And YAY for four more years of Shelly O style!!!!!

And of course MEGA YAY!!! for marriage equality! I kind of take it for granted, being in Massachusetts and being hetero and married, but I’m thrilled that the tide seems to be turning toward our way of thinking.

And THANK GOD this frickin’ election is over. If I had to get one more robo-call or watch one more vicious, xenophobic attack ad I was going to stick a fork in my own eye.

    • Wellworn

LOL I was getting Romney robo calls because of my ex husband’s affiliation.

  • Is she wearing the same cardigan she wore on election night in 2008?

  • alyce1213

It was also a very good night for women in this country. So happy for four more years of our lovely FLOTUS.

  • LLuL

    Love all three Obama girls!

Independent voters have spoken! I believe this is proof that you can no longer expect to win an election if you don’t support civil rights for everyone. I can’t believe it’s 2012 and I’m still voting based on whether or not a candidate believes they have the right to control my uterus and love live.

  • f_yeah_marie

The girls seem to be taking after their mom with the high belt + full skirt.

  • siriuslover

A beautiful dress for a beautiful night. I didn’t even catch the red/blue symbolism.

I also really liked Jill Biden’s dress and wish I could pull off a dress like that.

And the girls looked lovely and stylish, just like their Mom.

  • unbornfawn

It was a good night. What a lovely family.

  • Winter_White

Michelle, you beauty!  So very very happy about the 4 more years!

Have always loved this family, but at the very beginning of his first term I recall NOT loving all of her fashion choices.  At some point that changed — don’t know if it was her style or my taste — and now nearly everything she wears looks just right.  The dress above is a perfect example:  I hated the Narciso Rodriguez thing she wore in 2008; last night I recognized the call-back to that red/black outfit, but thought she just looked fantastic this time.

  • Wellworn

I love her personal style.  Not too many stuffy suits.  The little jackets and full skirts are comfort retro, and very feminine.  She has pretty much dressed this way for 4 years, and although sometimes it might not work for her body, she stays true to herself.  And it never looks bad, at least to me.  I love the girls’ dresses too.
Now can I say hell yes to the election results?  I unfortunately live in a deeply red Bible belt state (which I’m not originally from), and when I went to vote, I bet I was the only Obama supporter there, and would be a little scared to say that out loud.  I quietly let my voice be heard, where it counts on that election machine. Some of my friends and acquaintances are crying their eyes out literally today, but they need to suck it up and move on.  The country has spoken!

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Wellworn, we could be neighbors.  Cheers from another blue transplant languishing in a red state in the buckle of the bible belt.

      • TigerLaverada

And you both could be neighbors to me! I’m in one of the reddest states down South. I can’t express how happy I am that the rest of the country isn’t as backward. Around here, it’s still all about race.

  • Snailstsichr

I am thrilled beyond measure we have the glorious Miss Shelley as a style icon for 4 more years!

Did anyone else notice that Rachel Maddow appeared to be wearing blue eyeshadow last night? It looked exactly like the color I was wearing! (I was tickled to have something in common with my hero!)

  • Joyce VG

I’m ecstatic!!  Michelle O looks beautiful.  Her whole family does.

  • ComeLetsTalk

So beautiful. All of them. Michael Kors is such a happy camper right now. He was already high profile, but she has taken him up even more levels with her support thru the years.

  • Her dress looks burgundy-colored in these pics.  I can’t get over how grown-up the girls look in just 4 years!

  • Scott Prendergast

  • Contralto

    Beautiful family.

I want FLOTUS’ outfit, head to toe.  Love what the girls are wearing, but I’m old-fashioned enough to wish the hems were a touch longer.

Edited to add: and I wish they’d stop relaxing their hair. Talk about change we can believe in. I’d love for a whole generation of little girls to grow up accepting who they are with role models as strong as the POTUS’ womenfolk to lead the way.

    • formerlyAnon

      Well, it’s the 2nd term . . .

Though it’s also just the last few years before Ms. Obama can really re-focus full bore on her own career, if she chooses to do so. She’s always stayed well within the traditional guidelines for the appearance of black women in American politics/public life and I can’t see her changing that now. Though that would make it even a greater example if she did!

The girls may have more leeway now, which given their ages is possibly a relief all around. It must be dreadful to be a teen and have to look suitable for a campaign ad.

  • Tracy_Flick

I think Jill Biden actually looks cute, too.

  • looking through these pictures is making me tear up again.  i am SO HAPPY!!!  so glad to see warren take massachusetts, so glad to see the rape-loving jackasses lose their seats and SO amazingly glad to see the progress of equality.  it’s a beautiful day and we have a beautiful family in the white house for another 4 years.  (and yes, dr. b looks FAB!)

  • I love the dress, love how it looks on her, and everything about it. She looks great!

  • I live in Maine and it was so good to wake up this morning and know my state did right!

I love the 3 dresses! They make for a really cute family.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Y’all did good up there in Maine!

  • kategs

They all look handsome, happy and relieved!  Malia is one gorgeous young woman and her sister is going to catch up quickly.

  • Deb Oswald

THRILLED to say Wisconsin has elected the first gay, woman Senator!!!  YAY US!

AND Mrs. O looks amazing as does the rest of her fam.

  • Margi Reed

I guess I’m missing something. Why would you be vilified, any more than you normally are when offering commentary, if you criticized Anne Romney’s clothing choices?

    • NCDFan

It seems that criticism is seen as politically motivated if the criticized person has vastly different views.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Malia is definitely a younger version of Mrs. Obama, and they both looked lovely last night.
OK-I will make one comment- as a  native of Maryland, and the very, very proud aunt of a wonderful young woman, I am happy beyond words that she will be able to legally marry her partner next year!

    • Patricia Gillett

Congrats to your niece and to all the people of Maryland!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Thanks! I literally burst into tears when I heard the news about Question 6 in MD early this morning-happy tears.

  • Ann

Do you have a way of finding out what designers the girls were wearing?

  • Congratulations from Berlin! The most posted facebook status of my friends was today “Well done USA”. We are so glad! Let’s all go and have blue and red drinks in the TLounge!!

  • minnye

I like that she almost always wears a simple silhouette with an interesting detail such as neckline, color, fabric. Also (admittedly, this may not be the best post for this observation, since obviously they are echoing the colors of the flag) I appreciate that their outfits are coordinated. I know it is considered gauche for a couple to match their clothes, but I hate the color clash when a man is wearing, say, a blue suit with a red tie and his lady partner is wearing a bronze gown. This seems to happen often with the Obamas and the Cambridges.

  • We get to keep our gorgeous family for four more years. What’s better than that? Those girls will be all grown up by the time they leave – they’re already beautiful young ladies! They all look stunning and yes, I agree, nice of Shelley to take one for the team  and wear red. Otherwise the Obamas and Bidens would have been totally blue (although I love Jill’s dress). Shelley’s red dress points us towards a post-election return to civility right? No? Too much? Well I’m overwhelmed with optimism today so sue me. And it must be said: welcome Maryland, Maine and Washington, you’re hanging with the cool kids now.

  • MintaHallWriter

Those two girls are so freakin’ CUTE!  They’re adorable!  As is Michelle!  A beautiful family.

  • Yay!

  • Emily Scott

LOVED this dress. In fact I almost gasped when she came out on stage. Perfection for this event, I thought.

And yes,a lot of ups and downs overall last night, but a tremendously exciting night for equality 🙂

  • twocee

Like their politics or not, I think everyone can agree that the Obamas are a really great family to have as our first family–they genuinely seem to love each other.  They all looked fantastic last night (as I watched them bleary-eyed and dreading morning!).  Not loving that cardigan though.

A hearty congrats to all of you who are directly impacted by Maine, Maryland, Washington, and Minnesota’s decisions last night.

  • Qitkat

Four more years of this beautiful, loving family, and delightful fashion posts on FLOTUS and POTUS.
So relieved this fracking national dance is over for the time being, robocalls a dozen a day for months, but my swing state of Colorado did me proud, going blue and advancing the marijuana issue.

  • Stubenville

Everyone should look so good at 2:00 AM after biting their nails all day.

  • Julaine Morley

Dearest T & Lo, This morning I was wondering what your response would be to having 4 more years of fashion commentary on FLO, and here it is – thank you! I, too am jubilant about the progress in gay rights, and hoping madly that the right to marry initiative will pass in Washington (still counting) so that my step-daughter & her partner will leave Utah and move to the West Coast, near us.  Tra-la!  <3

  • GOD, could they be any more in love??? They are so perfect together, I am in awe.

  • judybrowni

it was a good night for gays, women, minorities, and educated white guys: really a good night for everyone, even those who wouldn’t know it, if it slapped them in the head.

And I love Shelly’s dress, although it comes up burgundy on my screen, girls, cute, too and Dad rounds out the FLOTUS/POTUS flag.

  • formerlyAnon

Thanks for including these photos today! I wanted a better look at the girls than I got on the tiny screen last night.

  • f_yeah_marie

By the way, it was worth staying up until 2 am to listen to the President’s powerful and encouraging speech.  Time to stop bickering and unite!

  • CarolinLA

I love what Jill Biden is wearing.  She is so petite.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

She may not be as fabulously fashionable as FLO and her baby fashionista daughters (who all look amazing, baby snaps to Malia), but I am so proud of Wisconsin and Tammy Baldwin! Snaps to the first openly gay United States Senator.

  • editrixie

My gosh, the girls look so adorbs, and totally age appropriate. Shelly has taught them well!

  • Rebecca J.

Hideous.  They all look like they should be dangling from a Christmas tree.

    • julnyes

You might want to reconsider your choice of words there…

      • ChiliP

I was about to say- given the history of lynching threats hurled at the President, one might want to avoid the phrase “dangling from a…tree” when critiquing the First Family’s sartorial choices.

        • julnyes

Yep, my thoughts as well. If one must insult the look just say they look like christmas tree ornaments would work just fine (even If I disagree heartily and think they look fabulous).

  • kolokOlchik

I am so incredibly grateful for last night and in no small part for the pro-gay-rights wins across the country.  I am from Minnesota where we worked hard against the amendment that would put a ban on gay marriage into the constitution.  I am so proud to say that we are the first state ever to defeat such an amendment!

    • Nope, not the first. Arizona actually defeated their amendment the first time around. Then they had to go and get it passed in the next election cycle. Ugh.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

This is my First Lady, and I am so proud of that.

  • Melizmatic

I don’t love the dress, but I applaud the FLOTUS for being smart enough to “recycle” something she’d already worn.

All I have to say regarding the election itself is that my ‘lady-parts’ are mighty relieved.

‘You Betta Werq’, Maine and Maryland…

  • FLOTUS looks good, yes, but my eye instantly went to Malia.

  • Not an American but I am so proud of being a Washingtonian today. They’ve said R74 will pass.
Love FLO and PO and the girls too. Am I the only one secretly hoping that Michelle does a Hillary and runs for Senate and then the Presidency?  She is so smart and qualified and a wonderful public speaker in her own right. And a fabulously fashion savvy female US President would just slay me.

  • CatherineRhodes

I am proud to have this beautiful all-American family represent our country to the world. Thrilled with every outcome of this election.

  • girliecue

This must be the leggiest First Family ever. Geez they’re good looking! And perfect sartorial choices too. Congrats to The President and YAY to the rest of us!

  • Wow! The daughter on the right in that first family photo is almost as tall as her dad, and she’s wearing flats! That is awesome. I hope she will turn out to be a fashion icon like her mom.

  • CeeQ

“the most pro-gay election night ever” – you might even say….the gayest election ever =)

Good times and fabulosity all round! FLO’s dress looked great and for once the cardigan didn’t heavy it all up =)

  • Zippypie

Love the dress, love the most historical gay election night, love that she recycled a dress!  LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • Hai Yen Nguyen

The Obamas are so freaking adorable. I love them. Jill Biden is looking fierce as well.

  • c-mcdavid

Good grief we have a beautiful and stylish first family! Anyone who has a damn thing to say about family values only need to look to the Obamas for upholding them.

  • TLo, I just want to say thanks for saying this on your blog: “It was a very good night for gay people in this country. In fact, it was a historically good night for gay people; the most pro-gay election night ever. Don’t shit on that. And if you feel the need to shit on that, then criticize her dress if it makes you feel better.” You deserve to speak up on your own blog about your own lives. It makes me want to read here even more.

    This BK thanks you.

  • Winter_White

I read this post and the BK comments this morning, just drinking up the shared joy!  After a long day, during which the spectacular high from last night wore off, I came back and read all of the new comments…and was right back there.  Thank you all.

  • Tutlecup

What a joyful morning, what a beautiful family, what great folks with exquisite taste on this site. And thank you T&L for this site and your opening comment. Well said. It was not a political statement, it was a human statement.

  • e jerry powell

  • Jessica Goldstein

Well hell. I thought I was coming here to comment on POTUS (so handsome and decent), FLOTUS (a knockout), and their adorable daughters. Except one of those adorable daughters is now too stunning to be called adorable any more, and then you two had to go and mention the whole best-night-for-gay-rights-ever thing.  I sure hope you didn’t have to delete any comments. Because really, anyone coming to your sight and reading your critiques should know you as a couple by now and understand that you deserve nothing less than the same protections and recognition other married couples have. I’m proud of my country today.

  • Allison Woods

I really like this dress on her, though there was one shot of her from the back last night that was NOT GOOD.  I’m sure we all have that angle somewhere.

The girls: I didn’t like the full skirts at all at first, but they’ve grown on me, Sasha’s especially. I think Malia’s outfit is a little fussy and oddly mature in a way. She looks like a kid in a grownup’s outfit.

    Jill looks smashing.

Another example of how much taste the blue team can have. Partisanship aside, this current group (and I include N. Pelosi in that) of D women look pretty great. Even Hilly these days!

  • ladymystique

Well, as a Canadian, I can say that most of the people I spoke with were happy with the election results.  As to the photos, I was a little surprised how much the Obama girls have grown since the inauguration in 2008, but they and the rest of crew look great!

  • Adriana_Paula

Well, burgundy is basically red, but dark (smile) with a little blue in it (smile)!!!

  • PaulaBerman

The girls are looking so grown up and beautiful. They are a lovely and inspirational family.

  • CozyCat

I just love the fact that we get to refer to her as “Dr” Biden!

  • CozyCat

Yeah, the inaugural ball(s) is about the only time that excess in dress is politically acceptable in a FLOTUS, perhaps because the other attendees are outspending her by at least 3 to one.

The inauguration itself is always the most interesting style choice–it has to be conservative, warm, comfortable and camera worthy.  That’s quite a brief for any single outfit.

  • CozyCat

I think you mean 2008.  I can’t blame you for erasing 2004 from your memory, though–that was the year “W” was re elected.

  • andi56

I met Dr. B. along the campaign trail, and she is more gorgeous (and toned) than you see in the photos! But above all, she just an awesome person: smart, funny, and very down to earth.

  • andi56

And those beautiful daughters are just as poised and lovely as their mother. What a life, living in the fishbowl, even with all the perks! Can you believe, when you compare the election night photo from four years ago, how tall they’ve gotten?!

    • Lilak

I know!  Easy to forget how really young they were 4 years ago; they’re only 11 and 14 now.  (Amy Davidson’s “The Malia Generation ” – on The New Yorker’s website – is probably my favorite post-election piece so far.)

      • Winter_White

Just googled and read that article:  thanks for mentioning it, Lilak.  It’s lovely.

  • zbkat

The picture of Shelley hugging Barack from behind…sigh. That’s a real “I love this guy” move. I adore all of them.

  • love all the jewel tones

  • Le_Sigh

😀  What an awesome night!  What awesome style choices!  How does Shelley get her hair to glow like that?

    Also – Jill’s belt – I likes a lot.

  • ChristinaRi

Love that family.  I’m so proud they are our first family.   Everybody looked great.  The girls are beautiful and their outfits are darling.   Shelley looked serious enough yet festive.   I think this style suits her very well.

And Salutes to you T and Lo.   It was a historic night for gay rights.  Everybody gains when there is equality for all.

What?  No love for Jill Biden?  She looked marvelous, too.

And actually, I thought Ann Romney’s style on the campaign was quite sophisticated and strategic.  She was able to present a softer, more approachable image than Cindy McCain ever did.

Just now coming up for air from Tuesday night -and yes -i did tweet on Wednesday that we are looking forward to 4 more years of Mrs. O fashion -and maybe some of the girls too. Everyone looked fantastic last night. I love the pop of pink on Malia’s dress. And Dr. Biden always looks flawless!

I love you, Tom and Lorenzo.  I know you’d be a lot of fun at a party.
The whole Shelley O thing has been big fun and I’m glad we get to continue enjoying your witty critiques.  It was a really big night for gay issues.  About time.

I couldn’t view the elections on election day; but I must say what a relief…
Congratulations for the President and VP for their honorable achievement.  And everyone looked fantastic too!
