Katharine McPhee at ‘Killing Them Softly’ Premiere

Posted on November 27, 2012

Y’know, if she was walking down the street during the day wearing this outfit, we’d say it’s almost cute.

Katharine McPhee attends the screening of ‘Killing Them Softly’ in New York City.

Except for the craft store fur glued onto it, of course. That part’s horrible.

But this is a red carpet for a movie premiere and this strikes us as a bit too casual for the event. It’s obviously not a big, flashy, gowns-and-diamonds kind of premiere, judging by what the star of the film showed up sporting, but she could’ve done a little better than this; especially since her TV show didn’t do so well last season and the upcoming season has a lot of people dubious about its future. Now’s the time to really sell it, honey.  We like the pants and the shoes, but the top looks too casual and the weird jacket is just killing the look for us. Put on a top with a little shimmer to it and switch out that ugly jacket for … oh, let’s say a fitted leather menswear-style blazer. Add a pop of color with the shoes and a complementary clutch and she’d be good to go; casual, but still night-time picture-ready.

Oh, and scrub off that makeup and start over. Same goes with the limp hair. Play up the eyes, downplay the lips, slap on some earrings and pull the hair back in a ponytail if you don’t want to make the effort.

She used to have THE most gorgeous hair.  :-(

It looks like she’s missing a button on her blouse…

    • MrsMaxPower

Those damn buttons! I had to look at the pics for a couple minutes to figure that it is actually buttoned, but it looks like a combo of boob stretch (I always get that in button-up shirts) and fabric pulled on the jacket that skews them to look so wonky. It seriously is insanely distracting…poor thing.

      • kimmeister

Worsened by the fact that she has it buttoned all the way up to her tonsils.

      • http://twitter.com/k8twolf Katie Wolf

This is how distracting that ridiculous button situation is: I *completely* missed the hairy-chest jacket and had to scroll back up after reading TLo’s conclusion. That must be the ultimate sign of a truly awful blouse, no?

        • MrsMaxPower

I missed the jacket too being so focused on the button situation…glad I wasn’t the only one.  Yeah, that blouse is truly heinous.

I have the same problem with these kinds of shirts – the buttons do that when the shirt rides up, and she probably didn’t realize that she needed to pull it down a bit

I think it’s correctly buttoned (although she did miss one about half-way down!), but she also used a safety pin to prevent the shirt from gaping between her girls.  Unfortunately, that trick doesn’t work with a silk shirt.

      • shirab

I thought it was a pin as well, but after staring at it for probably longer than was appropriate I think it might be a glimpse of skin peeking out because the placket isn’t lying flat. Or else it’s a pin. You know, I really can’t tell anymore. It’s a rumpled mess in any case.
Also, did she lose that lower button, just miss it, or not button it on purpose (cue “baby bump” rumors)?

    “Clash”! Season two!

  • j_anson

    I blame Brad.

    she’s gorgeous

I was watching Glee the other night and thinking it would really be nice if we could move Leah Michele into Katherine’s part.  Kind of morph the two shows together and Kurt could come along too.  Smash is just a drag and that’s the only thing that could conceivably save it.  I mean I think the blame falls squarely on the producers placing too much of the load on Katherine’s talent-free shoulders.

    • lovelyivy

Lea Michele as Marilyn Monroe…. can’t see that at all. She still has more talent in her pinky than McPhee seems to posses in total though, and at least she’d be fun to watch. it would still be a debacle, but it would be fun.

  • decormaven

Is this movie about the homeless? Because I’m starting to spot a trend on the RC here. Thank goodness I wasn’t drinking anything when I read “craft store fur.”

  • homespunner

I think I saw this girl shopping at the mall on Black Friday.

  • YoungSally

Seriously — shave the jacket (looks like it’s made from Ernest Borgnine or Free-range Robin Williams)
                 – skip the Taylor Swift lips.

  • julnyes

Those buttons are giving me a bout of angina.

The missing button did me in.

  • kimmeister

That’s a lot of very thin rings in random locations.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

    This is awful.

  • Violina23

Smash started off so promising, and then it dive-bombed into soap-opera-cliche-land. So sad, I am such a broadway theater geek and I EAT UP things that have ANYTHING remotely to do with broadway.  But even I couldn’t defend it by halfway through the season…

  • LauraWL

I actually don’t hate this. She just needs to straighten the hems on her pants and her shirt and de-fur the jacket. However, this is more something I’d wear on date night and not to a RC, so… Also, I LOVE her makeup and her buttoned-all-the-way-up shirt bc those are 2 trends (neutral face w/ bold lip and fully buttoned up shirt) that I can do and which basically cost me nothing.

  • Trisha26

I could almost excuse the fur on the jacket (almost) if it weren’t for that K-Mart special blouse. It just kills me when women with nearly model-proportions and resources the rest of us can only dream about put together such cheap-looking outfits. I lasted 1 episode with Glee and 6 episodes with Smash which was 5 too many.

  • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I had that shirt! In 1992! It was voluminous as a tent. Not a good look on me then, and not a good look on her now.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

The worst. Everyone was wearing those big shirts in the 90s — I still can’t fathom how anyone ever thought they looked good while wearing them.

  • Louise Bryan

The lipstick reminds me of The Joker.  The shirt…the buttons….*scratching head, rubbing eyes….

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

This looks like the first picture in her “style evolution” retrospective from 10 years in the future.

  • quiltrx

Seeing her too…now I’m wondering if I have the wrong idea of this event.  It was a ‘screening’ not a ‘premiere’, right?  And it was at a Visual Arts school?  Maybe they were trying to dress down to fit in better with the students?

(Still doesn’t excuse them, especially Brad, but I’m trying to reason this out.)

  • http://twitter.com/jalae Janey

Hmm…mental fixing up or how I would dress

pull all hair back into a high ponytail or have a high bun or have a fishtail braid to the side
    black or navy blazer
take off the jegging like pants and put on some dark coloured or black (maybe maroon) skinny jeans with a bit of rouching at the bottom
wear a pair of higher black or red pumps
have eyes in makeup that’s stronger or a bit more intense. Or maybe more of the cat eye thing
long silver chain with something at the bottom and some silver bracelets

This is so much fun its like shopping and styling with your mind :D

  • Tatiana Luján

The top is supposed to be loose, but her breast is pulling. The pant is so tight that it looks like leggings. The “fur” on the jacket is just crazy. OUT

  • librarygrrl64

Skinny black jeans/leggings with high heels always scream “Sandy at the end of Grease” to me.

  • formerlyAnon

Those look like jeggings to me. Which I am over & which take this the rest of the way to fashion-conscious-teen at the mall. In some past decade. One who had a great find! at the thrift store when she came across that jacket. Which only smells a little funky when it’s really humid out or raining. I had a similar shirt in the ’80s or maybe early ’90s.

  • Imasewsure

Wrong from head to ankle…the shoes are fine….

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I like the makeup, I just think the lipstick looks too aggressive with the turquoise up near her face. But once she gets rid of the gorilla pelt and that awful shirt and has a sparkly cowl neck on, it’ll look fine.

  • KSpence

Hate hate HATE ombre hair. Hate.

  • MoHub

As a woman with a bustline, I would like to tell Katherine that button-down blouses are not our friends. I can’t take my eyes off the gap in the button placket long enough to check out the rest of the outfit.

  • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

She looks a lot like Claire Danes in this picture.

  • Judy_J

She looks like someone who just wandered in from the crowd outside (assuming there was a crowd outside).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1832126583 Mary Lauer

To me it looks like she is trying to channel Christina Ricci and failing.

  • neofashionista

the buttons on this shirt make this an automatic OUT!!!!

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

This is a very generic look, have seen it hundreds of times since the 80′s

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Ugh. The oversized satiny collared shirt buttoned all the way up to the neck — this is truly something I hoped to never see again.

This is a desperate housewife at the PTA meeting very shortly before her divorce.

  • kikisayshi

    And get your roots done!

  • MilaXX

Really? This is the best she can do?
