Kate Winslet in Alexander McQueen

Posted on November 26, 2012

And speaking of dressing for the venue

Kate Winslet holds her CBE, for services to drama, which was awarded to her by Queen Elizabeth II during an Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London, England in an Alexander McQueen suit paired with a hat by milliner Natalie Ellner for Ellsewhere.

Miss Kate gets it done. Could she have possibly worn anything that says “JUST MET THE QUEEN, BITCHES” any louder than this? When else can one get away with wearing a dead bird on their head?

On the other hand, her lipstick looks like she just spent an hour in a closet making out with a member of the queen’s staff. Seriously, girl. What happened there? Touch that shit up before you pose for the cameras.

This is so ridiculous.  Services to drama, indeed.

    • She’s getting her Joan Crawford on, that’s for sure.

      • neadsie

That was my first thought too. She has gone full Crawford/Swanson.

    • patticake1601

Its an honor to receive a CBE from QE2.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Totally undertand the honor.  I just think she’s putting on a face more sour than honored and it looks really silly.

  • … is her eyebrow permanently arched now?

    • hyperionic

Sure looks that way. These are the perils of botox.

      • joything

I was just saying, Her eyebrow is scaring me.  Put it down!

      • Le_Sigh

Ohhhhhh – I’ve been noticing that too – I was wondering if her face got tired maintaining that arch just so.

      • JosephLamour

OMG that’s freaking me out. LOL. I think the outfit is FEROSH, tho.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I can’t help it-I just love that hat.

    • Mismarker

      Very Disney villainess!

      • amf0001

I was going to say early Cruella…

    •  I reckon she had it pinned there deliberately to work with the hat.

      •  It does arch quite nicely into the fold of the wings there!

    • deltabronze

Maybe it’s the lady version of blue steel.

    • rainwood1

I’m thinking that’s why she has the asymmetrical hat that comes down so low on the face.  An attempt to distract from the high-flying eyebrow.

    • kaycem

      THANK YOU.

i was really about to type “so, i have a question about her eyebrow…”  i gave her a pass at first, thinking she was just serving Better Than You haughtiness but it’s clearly frozen there.

    • Crap.  Now I cannot unsee that eyebrow.

  • LadyCelia

Fabulous.  Wonder why her right eyebrow is so very arched in every shot.

    • schadenfreudelicious

i understand that can occur as a result of a bit of a botox misshap…see also Kylie Minogue….

      • I think it’s kind of awesome. And I like the idea that she DID spend an hour making out in the closet with one of the queen’s staff.

However… shouldn’t one wear hose to meet the Queen? My mom admonished us for bare legs at church; I could never meet the Queen without proper hosiery.

  • RebeccaKW

Love the dead bird, and I think she does look pretty great.  But man, that peplum is huge. Girl is tiny and that thing is giving her massive hips/ass.

  • A. W.

Honestly, I hope people never get tired of the peplums. They’re so ridiculous and fun.

Only two negatives are things you pointed out: old lady lipstick and the outfit makes her look a little wide.

  • In these shots alone, her eyebrow needs a medal for ‘services to drama’.

  • out for a walk

Mostly I find her ability to so dramatically arch one eyebrow rather impressive! It goes fabulously with her suit and hat.

    • MinasAunt

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed– it’s sooooooo way up there it makes me hurt just looking at it.

  • nancylee61

She reminds me of Carol Merrill of Let’s Make a Deal, showing off the newest fragrances behind Door # 2.

  • I LOVE this, drama by way of Tippi Hedren.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

…thou art lost and gone forever, dreadful sorry, Clementine.

    • bookish

I think the reason Kate Winslet always looks a bit off to me is that in my head she will always be Clementine…just a regular looking girl in an orange sweatshirt with crazy hair. Obviously that’s not at all who she is in real life and I can’t seem to get used to it.

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i honestly believe not giving her the oscar for eternal sunshine fucked up her entire career and life.  now she seems like just another uptight, ‘serious’, awards actress.

  • Does her right eyebrow ALWAYS cock like that? She’s definitely serving it up, but I’m completely distracted by the rogue eyebrow. What’s that about??

  • Stunning! As someone who similarly lacks the ability to force lipstick to do my bidding, I say this is a WERQ.

  • Those pebbles will damage her heels.

  • Wowsa. I am loving the hat, it gives me life, death, and afterlife as a Saville Row tailor who works secretly as a spy for HRH.And I kind of love the suit, because it shows the body I fell in love with on Kate, the one I would have switched teams for. But it’s a little aging, perhaps? Oh well, I’m not getting any younger, and I just fell back in love a little bit.

    • kschwarting

I was thinking (hoping?) that Kate was reverting a bit to her former hourglass figure, but it might just be the suit.

  • neofashionista

i think she looks fierce as shit
and i love the dead bird comment

  • MinasAunt

While I like the drama of the look and I understand that there is a certain code for meeting the Queen, I am not sure that she looks all that great here.  I think that the dress could be more flattering and  the makeup makes her look a little older than she should.

    • poggi

I agree. I think the hair color also ages her a bit.  She looks fresher as a more natural blonde or brunette.  This white blonde seems a little harsh on her.

  • The dead bird’s soul is drawing Kate’s eyebrow to heaven with it.

    • Sam

I’m laughing so hard at your comments my eyes are watering.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Wow, she is incapable of smiling now, is she. The hat is ridiculous and the suit isn’t that flattering. You are on your way to become Dame Kate Winslet, lady. You can do better.

  • Something about the front of the jacket is off to me- maybe the lack of buttons or some sort of visible closure? I don’t know- I just don’t love it. And add me to chorus of people weirded out by the rogue eyebrow.

  • Mismarker

Serve it up.  She looks amazing.  I think she is wearing a lighter shade of lipstick on the “inside” part of her lips.  It gives the illusion of a thicker pout.  Maybe not very convincing in broad daylight.

  • sk8tfan

mommy, mommy, she’s wearing a Dalmatian puppy on her head!

  • “Could she have possibly worn anything that says “JUST MET THE QUEEN, BITCHES” any louder than this?”No. No she could not.
SHIT she looks good. Working that suit!

  • Janet B

Um…it’s a fantastic suit (and hat), but maybe she should have saved it for her 60 yr old self.

    • hac51

Exactly.  This is easily aging her some 15-20 years.

    • Dot

It’s Buckingham Palace — doesn’t everyone dress more maturely when they pay a visit to the Queen? Given the circumstances and the venue, I think it’s a perfect look.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Hate the bleached hair, but otherwise, LOVE it.

  • Judy_J

And what’s with the cocked eyebrow?

    • Judy_J

Seems I should have read the comments before I made mine about the eyebrow.  But seriously, that brow has a life of its own!

  • I need to look up the wardrobe protocol for meeting the queen.  This seems severe, but I’m sure there are reasons.  What gives me a sad is botox brow.  I so hoped she wouldn’t go that route!

    • Dot

If you watch the footage where she is interviewed after her CBE acceptance, her forehead wrinkles and moving brows make it pretty obvious that she hasn’t had botox. She’s always had powerful, expressive brows.

      •  That’s some Joan Crawford realness then.  Good for her, and I’m delighted to be wrong!

      • She’s being awarded a medal for services to drama.  Wouldn’t that imply that her one eyebrow is deliberately drawn arched higher than it’s mate?  The one is pulled well above the brow bone while the other is only slightly coasting above it.  I think it’s funny, like a giant question mark.  Very dramatic and appropriate.

Anywho, love the suit, the hat is also funny, and I really hate her roots.  She couldn’t get her roots done for the queen?  I still love her.  Heavenly Creatures will always be one of my favorite movies.I don’t know why people would assume it’s botox, considering she has *ahem* lines on her forehead and around her eyes.

        • Dot

Yeah, I agree. If that’s botox, it’s certainly not accomplishing its intended purpose!

  • Puck Thornton

How very Alexis Colby. Is she sucking in her cheeks?

  • Ugggghhhh, a bird killed itself on the side of her head, and she’s wearing too much foundation.  No.

  • decormaven

But what is an eyebrow to do when it has killed Cock Robin?

    • Jennifer Coleman

      It seems to have frozen.

  • BrooklynBomber

Oh, give me a break, Lady Winslet.

  • amaranth16

The nail polish makes her look terribly washed out in opposition to the makeup.

  • miagain

That suit is not doing her any favors…

  • Lilithcat

    Absolutely killer hat!

  • This is a great moment. Congrats to her, well deserved

  • Perhaps the bird wing is hiding a little piece of tape holding up her eyebrow.  I’m not one for wearing dead animals, but that hat is awesome.  I think she looks fab.

  • StellaZafella

The cocked brow is teddibly brit in a best Noel Coward sense for “Eat this, bitches”.
The hat, the hair and the outfit right down to the Peplum would have made the old Queen Mum smile as she said: ” Fix your lips, dear…Harry’s not THAT good a kisser.”

  • She looks very nice, but a bit on the Cruella de Ville side.  The stuck eyebrow isn’t really helping past the first shot.

  • She looks cray as hell. It’s all fantastic but she looks like a caricuature of kate winslet’s evil twin or she sold her soul or something.

  • It’s like EVIL Kate Winslette!

  • Carla_Charlton

What’s up with the raised brow?  She’s looking very Mildred Pierce.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Too bad she couldn’t act for “Mildred Pierce”.

  • l_c_ann

Meet the fiercest right eyebrow in all the Empire!

  • haha, those strapping boys in uniforms are nice!
anyway, killa look. love the dead bird.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    Evita, Evita, Evita, Evita……

  • she aged much faster than she should be.

  • MaryanneGirl

    UTTERLY fantastic!

  • another_laura

So very glad you served up the comment on the lipstick, guys, it’s what I was thinking but you say it so much better!

  • Hate the peplum, it makes her ass look huge

  • crash1212

The cocked eyebrow under the dead bird is pretty near perfection.

  • I love it! Perfecto. And nice that she made sure she had a fresh mani, too.

  • Imasewsure

    Dame Lana Turner

  • Jepham

First the eyebrow creeped me out, then I noticed the polish on her thumb nail is chipped and her lips are reminding me of Julie Andrews. The outfit looks very “meet the Queen” but since that’s what she was doing, it’s okay.

  • greyhoundgirl

Is her face too Botoxed for her to actually smile?  Because she looks pissed off.

  • librarygrrl64

Still hating the platinum hair (too harsh), but she looks stunning.

  • marilyn

I first thought her hat was supposed to be a butterfly wing, but you’re the expert.

  • She looks like a Madame Tussauds wax statue of Kate Winslet.  Curses to Botox and its sinister ability to suck all the emotion and humanity out of even the most beautiful faces!  But I do like the fit of that suit and the crazy cool feather hat.

  • jw_ny

I love her raised eyebrow…she’s really working the entire look.  Her shoes are rather a snore tho…love the rest.

  • nannypoo

At first I thought this was kind of hilarious, but the more I look at it the more I love it. She looks adorable.

  • Allison Woods

Give Kate some credit–she looks really good for a gal in her late 50s.

    • alyce1213

Good one – Love her, but I was thinking the very same thing.

  • beebee10

she serves it UP! love the supremely arched eyebrow.

  • Jecca2244

    that eyebrow arch! snaps.

  • alyce1213

How does she do that eyebrow? I mean– I’ve seen a raised eyebrow before, but her arch is without peer.
She looks older than her age (she’s never really been a girly, young type), but she’s gorgeous.

  • par3182

Meanwhile, outside the palace gates, World War II continued to rage….

  • My son just came up behind me and said, ‘hey, it’s Madonna.’ Ya’ gotta’ admit; the over the top-ness of this look does lend itself to the comparison. In other words; it’s aged her 15 years. Is her eyebrow trying to run off and start it’s own solo career?

  • Bout the lipstick?  Pretty sure she did the outline color darker than the fill-in color — an 80s trick for making your lips look like they have more dimension.  Which, obviously, doesn’t really work.

  • She looks terrible.  1) Needs a pop of color on that suit.  2) Suit makes her look thick.  I love her curves and all but something about the suit is off.  and 3) The dead bird needs to be an inch or two back so it’s not over her eyelid.

  • quiltrx

I do love a well-executed peplum!  Girl was serving it up, wasn’t she?  And I see the hat as a giant, dead, mutated butterfly.  In a good way. 🙂

  • formerlyAnon

I like her face. I always like her face. Not always so much her acting. The hat is very effective at a distance, though I can’t say it’s attractive, and I especially like the collar of the jacket.

  • Kate, lower your brow. It looks just too old-lady severe.

  • Sara__B

The eyebrow. The look on her face. I had to find a video interview with her following this ceremony to find out if she really has become as bitchy as she looks in these pictures. And I’m glad I did. She’s alive! She moves her face! Her eyebrow isn’t stuck there! And she’s honored but humble, and quite likeable, in the interviews. I am SO relieved. Carry on, Kate!

  • Oh I hope she’s going back to curvy again! I love the whole outfit but have to agree with everyone else, what the heck is up with that eyebrow?

  • Mia

I like the drama of the headpiece, but it does look like a dead bird. It’s her hair color that’s all wrong. Also a deeper lipstick color would have been better. Very nice suit, great suit, actually!

  • Anathema_Device

So how much bad luck would it be to put a bird hat on the bed?  (referencing the Campari post)

I wish I liked this more. The suit is fab. And while i’m all about hats and headpieces, this just looks a bit costumey to me. Maybe one someone else it would work?

  • Judih1

The suit is mature and funeral looking – even if it is McQueen. But the hair color? The color doesn’t work for her, especially with the roots showing

  • EEKstl

Love the hat.  The red nails are a good touch too.

  • MoHub

There’s a very Hitchcockian heroine vibe to that look.

  • carzieb

Her lipstick matches the ribbon of her CBE…..just sayin’

  • LOVE huhr!!

  • bitterk

She gets more interesting each year.

  • kcarb1025

That outfit makes her look as wide as a semi-truck. Unfortunate.

  • ccm800

Hey Sharon Stone! You look good with a little meat on…oh.

  • Suit and hat FAB. Makeup makes her look like she is channeling Mommy Dearest. It’s too harsh of a look for her.

  • Skirt needs to be longer for her and that hat is ridiculous.  And I love ridiculous hats but that just makes her look like Ms. Slocum from Are You Being Served.

  • murt

Gosh her makeup is horrible here………. And it makes her look so much older too.
