Josh Hutcherson on David Letterman

Posted on November 21, 2012

And now… a bite-sized morsel of Boy to get you over the hump today:

Josh Hutcherson makes an appearance on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ in New York City. The actor is currently working on the highly anticipated follow up ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.’

And now … criticisms:

His jacket is obviously too small on him. It’s pulling across the chest and he’s showing way too much shirt cuff. This grey-on-grey-on-grey trend in menswear needs to die a painful death.

Also – and yes, fangurls, we know it’s for the role – blond hair really doesn’t suit his looks.

But still: cute.

Looks like he outgrew his suit, but still cute.  A little too banker-ish, but still cute.

  • carpediva

Oh my god, he is just pocket-sized adorable, isn’t he? I LOVE the second shot where he’s straightening his tie: he looks all proud and “first day at Vacation Bible School”!

    • “first day at Vacation Bible School” – hahahahaha! Can I be your best friend?

      • carpediva

        Abso-tively. 🙂

  • Yeah, that excessive amount of shift cuff showing is annoying. I wish the pants were slightly more tailored, and he’d gone with a slimmer looking shoe. And I’m with you on the gray on gray. Add some color or pattern in another color with the tie at least.

  • famousamy

But look how well he did on the hem!!! 1000000 POINTS!

    • Perfect break!

  • lol What IS it about the Letterman show that they can’t figure out somewhere else to put the dumpster?  Is it some sort of ploy to remind the stars that they are, after all, human?

    • Vera L-

I’m shocked they aren’t selling ad space on the side of the dumpster. Shocked.

    •  I admit I have a Pavlovian reaction whenever I read it’s a David Letterman photo – where’s the dumpster, where’s the dumpster??? If it’s not there, I get a little sad, like the poor dumpster was left out of the excitement.  I do believe that someone somewhere has insisted that the dumpster stay… and I do wonder about the motive!

      • Does this mean that Lwtterman secretly wants to think of his faculty sly famous guests as trash?

        • DeborahJozayt

That’s what I always thought, like a mild Andy Kaufman joke that no one gets but him and us conspiracy theorists.

    • Aurumgirl

Or, a solution that requires much less effort:  simply take the shot of the celebrity with the dumpster at your back, and have the celebrity pose facing you, so the dumpster isn’t the star of every one of these shots.  I have this feeling that the background that might be visible in the other direction couldn’t be worse.

      • The dumpsters are fabulous. We hope they always stay there. It couldn’t possibly be any more New York or any more of a David Letterman thing.

  • MrsMaxPower

He is adorable, but I’m getting a Kennedy going to court vibe from him in these pics.  And the fit on those pants is making the area around his crotch look odd, but I still want to squeeze his cheeks.

    • siriuslover

      Which ones?

  • Mike Owens

He’s adorable. But never more so than he was in The Kids Are Alright.

  • Annabelle Archer

He does nothing for me (ever) and it kills me that he is Peeta. Kills me.

    • Judy P

THANK YOU!! I heartily agree with all of these statements. Everyone thinks he’s so great but I just want to flick him like a bug.

      • siriuslover

Well, I think he makes a great Peeta. Sorry (and FWIW, I’m a 40-something mom of two).

    • tereliz

I think he’s a good actor so far, but I would have preferred someone who actually looks like he could haul sacks of flour around, not someone who looks like Katniss could haul him around like a sack of flour. IMO, he’s not the best romantic lead for an action movie.

      • RebeccaKW

I agree.  I thought he did well with the acting (HG is the only thing I’ve ever seen him in), but I never really bought into him as the character Peeta.

I don’t find him unattractive, but he’s never moved my pants.

      • alannab99

I’m just glad they cast someone who isn’t a pretty boy, like so many of the other actors just out of their teens.  Hutcherson isn’t *bad* looking, of course, but the Peeta in my head had ordinary, boy-next-door looks.  They needed to save the gorgeous studmuffin thing for Finnick (and it appears they got that in Claflin.  Mmm.)

  • Annabelle Archer

But this does give me the chance to RE-ask a question I once posed to you wise people but then forgot that I asked and never went back to read the answers and now I can’t remember which post, so….

Why are men not supposed to button both jacket buttons?  TLO said it once, and I’ve been wondering why.

    • I think it’s related to motion (buttoning both buttons constricts movement too much so it looks overly fussy) but I don’t know of the specific reason; the easiest explanation is that it pretty much never looks good to button both buttons.
With three button suits, I believe the maxim is, from top button to bottom: Sometimes, always, never.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Agreed on all points! I think he does a great job as Peeta but the blonde is not working very well for him.

  • George Russell

We like them little.  Why?  Cause they have something to prove!

  • That’s like the worst dye job I’ve seen on a guy short of Mr. Lady Clairol himself. It’s so brassy.

    • Nikki Rose

His hair is dyed tht way cuz it’s supposed to be tht color in the movie

      • I can read. And it’s supposed to be super brassy with a lot of dark roots? Huh.

  • at least he doesnt have his hands in his pockets to pose.

  • Inspector_Gidget

Why is Hollywood so awful with hair color changes?  Elaborate costumes, state-of-the-art effects… and bad dye jobs.  I guess it comes down to thinking , “anyone can be made a blonde or redhead.” Some people just don’t have it in them.

  • MilaXX

Agree the jacket is too tight, but I think the colorist did a better dye job this time around. I like his Peeta hair. He was quite charming talking with Dave last night.

  • B_C_J

The jacket is definitely too small. The bowed lapels are the clear indication. The monotone grey is a bit disappointing. He is a handsome young man and a bright tie would have been a welcome relief and drawn attention to his strong jaw. There is also too much cuff showing but overall it’s nice to see a young man in a good suit.

  • rjeujune

He’s not terribly attractive. That face is way too big for a guy his age. He’ll probably come into his looks around 40. Definitely the underdog in the quest for Miss Everdeen’s long-lasting love…

  • Aw, he’s adorable. I love how proud he looks.

And I like him as Peeta – I do think they could have used an actor with more heft to pull off that whole “unskilled in combat but super strong” thing, but he’s an excellent actor who definitely has that goofy-sweet appeal that makes Peeta so lovable.

  • Just curious: how does one decide if the jacket is too small, or, alternatively, if the shirt is too big?  I agree there is too much cuff showing but how doe you tell that’s the fault of a too-short jacket sleeve, as opposed to a too-long shirt sleeve?

    • In_Stitches

The old rule is that the jacket sleeve is supposed to hit the meaty base of the thumb, but I think with the prevalence of slimmer cut, more tailored suits that rule is being reconsidered.

    • hyperionic

I think his sleeves are a bit long here, but there’s a very prominent X from where the coat’s fabric’s pulling on the button, which is not supposed to happen. Hardly any of the guys featured here seem to get it right though. I’m starting to think if it’s that hard to get a suit to fit properly then suits are just badly designed.

  • awwwwwwwwwwwwww Josh is so cute. :3 My inner tween is fangirling.

  • Anathema_Device

Agree with your assessment. He is my daughter’s friend’s biggest celebrity crush right now. She gets all giggly at the mere idea of him. Cracks my shit up.

  • In_Stitches

I blame the rise of tight, ill-fitted suits on the rise of insanely buff stars.  Sure, some of them can’t find a suit that fits their enormous physiques and so that bursting-out-of your suit look is associated with huge muscles and success.  Much like with the nude pump of yore, celebrilemmings will follow the herd.

  • bertkeeter

    “Can’t chat…late for church!”

  • mjude

i think i will put in my tchocke cabinet 🙂

  • SassieCassy

he is an adorable little thing… as a brunette

  • I can’t help but compare his old nose with his new one … whenever I see a picture of him.

  • decormaven

Aww! He is a cutie, even if his jacket is too small. Stylist, up your game for this young chap. He’s worthy!

  • he had a nose job.. that nose is straighter than a ruler..

  • Static cling!

  • omg he’s so damn cute!!!  just want to bring him home and ruffle his blond hair.  don’t care if it doesn’t suit him.

  • formerlyAnon

I think someone needs to affix an “Appearing Tonight on David Letterman!!” poster to the end of that dumpster.

I’m not tired of the grey-on-grey, yet. At some point I will start whining that they all look like old school IBM training videos.

He is way too generic to do anything for me, but isn’t he a really mature looking 20?  If he has continued success, he’s going to be one of those actors about which those of us not yet dead, or gaga, will be saying in 20 years: “He’s only 40? But he’s been around for-eeeever, I thought for sure he was pushing 50.”

  • BuffaloBarbara

He is a cutie.  You’re right about the hair color, and honestly, he looks nothing like the character even with the hair color changed, but he’s just sweet enough to pull it off anyway.

The suit is definitely too small, but props for not trying to look like a smug hipster.

  • i like the gray on gray on gray. and the blond. it works really well together, actually. super cute.

  • momogus

Respectfully disagree on the grey-on-grey aspect – I think that tie and suit combination looks fantastic (though I’m a starchy old lady who only loves a crisp white shirt).

  • glennethph

The producers probably told him that he needed to bulk up even more for HG:CF, and he thought he could recycle a suit — because that suit looks like one that he wore when he was poledancing for Hunger Games.

    Pocket Peeta. Hee.

  • siriuslover

I think he looks dapper. My inner cougar is beginning to show.

  • quiltrx

He looks like he’s just ripe for some bullies to come and toss him in the Fabulous Dumpsters.

  • whitrome

Super cute, but I’m afraid I remain TEAM GALE.

  • This boy is the Corgi of the male stars. Itty bitty and will probably lick your face.

  • MissAmynae

    Delicious little nugget of cute!

  • MaryanneGirl

    Awww little baby faaaace.

  • padma sallah

He looks adorable! And this blonde hair looks better than the one he was sporting as Peeta.

  • guest2visits

I love this suit for him; even the tiny tightness of the jacket still works, imo.

  • I disagree.  He’s a great blonde.  But blondes look terrible in grey. That’s why Edith Head would put women in grey for Alfred Hitchcock movies.  That way the watcher would feel ill-at-ease watching the heroine.

    • Did you see the new Edith Head photo book? Gorgeous.
