Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Gucci on Jay Leno

Posted on November 29, 2012

One deliciously fun side effect of the current malestar penchant for the tightly fitted suit is that they’re finally in the same boat as the ladystars in tight dresses; one extra ounce and the outfit doesn’t quite work as well as it could.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ in Gucci.

Gucci Fall 2012 Collection

Which isn’t to say he looks bad here or that – god forbid – he needs to lose any weight. But he’s bulked up some in the past year in order to transition into action-movie roles and he’s not quite the whip-thin boystar he once was, which means his suits lately have been just a skosh tight on him because he hasn’t learned that he needs to let them out a bit in deference to his newfound manliness. Look at his shirt in the sitting-down shots. Or how the waist of his pants are cutting into him.

On the other hand, it’s a gorgeous suit and we love the socks, so there’s that.

  • Is he wearing mis-matched socks? Cute.

At least the trousers aren’t having the unfortunate crotch situation they’re having on the model. And he’s so damned cute, I don’t even mind that the suit is a wee bit snug.

    • Sobaika

I hadn’t noticed that they’re not exactly matching. So cute. So adorable. I’m off to daydream about him being my husband and the wonderful little children we will have who won’t wear any matching clothes and it’ll be so whimsical.

      • Kristin McNamara

Matthew Gray Gubler (look him up if you don’t know him… holy yum) also very famously wears mismatched socks. ALL the time. He even claims that if when filming on Criminal Minds, they MAKE him wear matching socks, he still wears mismatched socks UNDERNEATH the matching ones 🙂 So in love with that man. hahaha

    • quiltrx

I thought the same thing…at least he isn’t getting the Lopsided Goober Pouch look the model had!

    •  It looks like a stars and stripes sock? The left one is the red and white stripes and the right one is blue with white stars???

      • j_anson

I hope you’re right. The non-red one looked green to me, and I’m NOT prepared to accept mis-matched Christmas socks on anyone under 60.

  • Straighten your tie!  My eye is twitching.  On the other hand, attractive male starlet in a tight suit?  A better way to start the morning than anything on any other website.

    •  Except, possibly, said man star getting OUT of the tight suit.

      • The very thought makes me feel like Cousin Matthew in the later part of Season Two.  If you know what I mean.

        •  An interesting reference.  There is a certain, (how shall I put this?), frustration factor involved.

    • gabbilevy

The slight sloppiness–nay: devil-may-care-but-still-put-together-ness–is helping me see him as a potential Bruce Wayne. But he’s a “starlet,” so then again, maybe not.

      • He seems too small — too short, specifically — to be Batman.  Though to be honest, I have no idea how tall he is relative to other people who’ve played Batman.

        • j_anson

You mean like how Tom Cruise is too short to be playing action heroes?

They’ll just make him act on boxes. 🙂

    • Louise Bryan

Did the suit affect his voice?  If not, it’s strictly an aesthetic choice.  It does look like he’s a bit constrained when sitting, though.

  • Apart from the minor points you mention, JGL looks delicious.  I love the subtle color of that suit, and the button positioning on the jacket.  Sweet.

  • Barber Quartet Socks. FABULOUS Barber Quartet Socks.

  • The socks set him apart from the old standard guy in a suit, and are great fun.  Yes, it’s probably one of those things he was very glad to change out of after the appearance…..kind of like taking off the spanx after you get home from the party.

  • Mama’s precious angel in argyle socks. I’ll knit you some socks, sonny boy. Don’t think I wont.

    • Pants_are_a_must

I can’t tell you how much I just laughed at your comment. You made my day.

  • theblondette

Lovely suit, and he always comes across as so charming. Shame it doesn’t quite fit at the crotch – looks awkward. Also not a fan of mismatched socks – I know it’s meant to be quirky but to me it just looks messy. Both the socks have fun patterns, so wearing a matching pair of patterns would still give a pop of interest!

  • kayleymaybe

He can do no wrong, as far as I’m concerned.  Yum.

  • Rand Ortega

& yet despite the flaws he’s still cuter than a box of kittens.
Mismatched socks? Cherry on the adorbs parfait.

  • He has the cutest dimples. The suit is secondary!

  • notoffred

JGL looks great, but the model is clearly freeballing it and it’s giving me nightmares.

    • Janice Viazanko Neary

he’s clearly unfazed by the lack of personal foundations required with a suit.  It’s not pretty.

    • I’m not sure if it’s exactly giving me nightmares, more like daydreams as there appears to be some heavy artillery in those trousers.

      • notoffred

As a fashion loving gay lady, I say you can have that model and I’ll take a women’s suit in that fabric instead. 🙂

    • Meg0GayGuys6

A model freeballing on a runway reminds me of something Joey said on Friends… “It’s a rented tux! I’m not going commando in another man’s fatigues”

  • siriuslover

Yes, I see your critique, TLo, but after a late night grading crappy papers, I am so happy to have my eyes blessed with the sight of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Yummy.
And I love all of his sock choices. Nice way to bring a little extra character to a typical suit.

  • margaret meyers

That is a beautiful suit.  Not every actor wears clothes well, bu JGL certainly does.

  • ecallaw1977

But if the suit and shirt had been altered correctly for him to sit, it wouldn’t fit so perfectly when he’s standing up–is it possible to have both?  I can’t help it, I think he looks perfect.

  • He is just ten kinds of adorable.

  • Dot

Can’t fault JGL here. He looks positively adorable. Honestly, I could just eat him up!

  • Judy_J

He looks fine in the standing shots, but I noticed his shirt gaps when he’s sitting down, so there is obviously a fit issue there.  Still, overall, I give him thumbs up.

  • Janet B

His tie wants us to see how tight his shirt is, funny.

His suits are beautiful, I wish this one fit a bit better.

  • formerlyAnon

He is looking so dapperly cute I barely notice the need for a hint of ease. But he needed to tuck the shirt in smoothly/adjust it after moving around.

On the plus side, he’s not wearing the red clearance dot that signifies his (altogether worthy) collaborative music project.

  • quiltrx

He’s completely adorable and the suit looks great standing up.  He’s just too precious for me to quibble with the small issues sitting down.

With that smile, I can barely see what you’re talking about. 🙂

  • Cathy S

    He’s adorable.

  • He’s so adorably pocket-sized, like a tiny well-dressed good luck charm.

  • mjude

    he is just adorable.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is impossible to avoid on the internet, if you’re even slightly interested in male stars, and I gotta tell you: the newfound tightness to his trousers and shirts is not lost on his many many fans.

That said,I’m not sure this particular plaid hue works for him, though he is one of the blessed few who CAN werq a plaid suit.

  • Sara__B

I am such a sucker for lovely grin. The rest of him is nice, too. And I’m going to enjoy watching male celebs struggle with the concept of a sit-down suit.

  • j_anson

Heh, the shirt IS too small. The rest of it looks pretty perfectly cut to me, though. I’d say that what I’ve learned as a girl in an age of tight clothing is that tight clothing DOES cut into you, with the possible exception of tight-and-stretchy, which obviously doesn’t apply to a suit. It’s just the nature of skinny cuts.

  • decormaven

Fabulous suit fabric, and nice choice of tie. The socks crack me up! His stylist is on his/her game. The fit’s not bothering me too much on the suit; he’s a cutie!

  • I did notice the shirt right away but he looks good overall. That is a great suit. Ad the socks are perfect. Fun but not funny.

  • Imasewsure

Much prefer the casual styling on the model to this dull office wear look. Nice he makes an effort and he looks polished (but boring). But then again I work in a law firm so I see nice suits all day

  • leftcoastpickle

Oh Gordon, you definitely need to get OUT of that over tight suit. Let me help you!

  • lesmaha

He’s so cute. I love that suit, even if it’s a little tight.

  • warnerave

i think it’s just the right fit! one size up then it will be too loose..

  • mylastduchess

    He. Looks. Gorgeous. Full stop.

  • I miss the skinnier JGL, but I know that bulking up happens to the best of us as we ‘grow up’.  And he’s still so super cute, I will gladly stare at pictures of him whenever they happen to appear on my screen.

  • Let it out

The extreme smoothness of his forehead is mesmerizing me – usually JGL has that kinda cute Shar Pei forehead.  Makeup or Botox?   Both?

  • He seems to be busting out of his shirt as well, but he is so cute i can just concentrate on his adorable face

  • traceyishere

He looks great and the suit is form fitting but does not look snug to me. 9.5 out of 10. That tie requires a different knot.

  • RocknRollmom

Oh dear.  I will never ever get my 19 year old daughter to wear matching socks ever again.  He’s adorable so I will overlook the socks thing.  Actually I think it endears him to me even more.  Oh hell, I am old.  I keep thinking he would be a great son in law.  Sigh.

  • CassandraMortmain

He looks like a sausage about to burst out of its casing.

  • I think that model just put my eye out.

  • Cousin_Rose

I think that you are being picky just so you can show him again. He’s just about perfect.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

I can see it in the shirt, but not the suit.

  • Jessica O’Connell

He and his socks are fucking adorable.

  • Carly Warnock

i think his face looks slightly off here..

    his socks are precious.

  • lrhoff

    He looks adorable…be kind, boys.

  • ZnSD

  • kolokOlchik

    He is so absolutely delicious!

  • bitterk

I wouldn’t mind seeing him in more youthful clothes.  He looks a tad bit office here.

  • Truly_Outrageous

Adorable. And let me just say (and I hate to sound pervy….or do I) that I love when a man can fill up a pair of pants in the thigh area when sitting down.

  • adnama79

    He’s so pretty.

I had such a crush on him in 3rd Rock.  And then again in Inception.  I think his IMDB birth date has already been fudged – it shows him 2 years younger than me now and I could’a sworn in the 3rd Rock days he was 2 years older than I am.  Lame – but “shit equally divided is better than shit unequally divided,” at least the age and tight pants thing is not only for women to worry about…
