Jennifer Lopez in Roberto Cavalli

Posted on November 27, 2012

We’re gonna go with the assumption that the strange hair color is a result of lighting quirks; otherwise, we’d have to assume that she dyed her forearm to match her hair and even J Lo’s not that crazy.

Jennifer Lopez made an appearance at the Cavalli Club and Restaurant in Dubai.

Roberto Cavalli Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Marique Schimmel

Y’know? We almost like this. There’s something a little late ’70s/early ’80s Miami disco fabulous about it. But even Jenny, bless her, can’t really get away with wide-legged, high-waisted white pants. Especially when they swallow up her feet like that. And judging by her body language and the way she has her forearm LOCKED INTO PLACE over her waist tells us that Jenny kinda knows that herself. That is a face full of fashion regret – and that’s not something Jenny normally trades in.

We keep staring at this look, trying to come up with suggestions to improve it. White skinny pants? Maybe, but equally as tough, if not more so, to pull off. We genuinely like that blouse, but it seems kind of a hard piece to pair. We suppose the only thing that would have worked here would be black skinny or fitted pants, but the whole look would have considerably less impact.

Suggestions, kittens?

The lipstick needs to die! It is hideous.

    • mshesterp

It’s so very late 90s.  Blech.

      • kimmeister

It’s like she reverted back to her Fly Girl makeup from In Living Color.

      • lovelyivy

All that’s missing is visible darker lip liner *shudder*

        • LesYeuxHiboux

          Ah, the dread pastrami mouth.

          •  That’s a much politer term than the one I’ve heard for that look!

          • LesYeuxHiboux

I always thought it looked like patrami or roast beef, dark at the edge and light in the middle. My father had a much more scatalogical term for it (though I was in junior high at the height of its popularity, I am proud to say I never wore it).

      • j_anson

Heh. I kind of like it. And everyone else will too, when it comes back into style in 10 or 20 years. Ah, fashion.

  • mshesterp

They don’t seem that high-waisted to me.  Just hem the pants–i enjoy them and I think they make the look.  It’s very easy breezy Miami in a way that I like.  I think she looks pretty chic (ignoring the hair).

    • Pannyx

If only the pants had been hemmed a bit, I would love this look. I’ve never understood why TLo Inc. seems to have such a thing against wide-legged pants.

      • luciaphile

I agree about hemming the pant and I like them wide legged on her. The problem with fitted pants or skinny jeans is that unless you have a slight figure you end up accentuating the thighs and the bum. The wider leg pants kind of balance out her top half so they work for me.

    • kimmeister

Yeah, I didn’t think they were particularly high waisted either.  I think they’d work if they were the right length.

    • Janet B

Ditch the heavy shoe and hem the pants.

The waist looks higher than what my teen wears, but no where near high-waisted.

  • Sobaika

This is is reaaaaalllllly unfortunate lighting. It’s too distracting, she might look good but I have no idea. I just see patchy fuchsia hair.

  • BrooklynBomber

I agree there’s something not quite there (I think the cut of those pants just don’t flatter her) but I really do like when she dresses like a grown up, so brava, even if it’s not perfect.

    • I’m not sure if it is the cut or the fabric – I think they might be just a bit too light-weight, so they are draping around her quadriceps in a not-very-flattering way. I assume “making an appearance” at a restaurant is being paid to turn up for dinner? In which case, I think she looks fine.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

She’ll be eating in this?! Oh my.  The food must have been relishing at the idea of attaching itself (themselves?) to so much white! White clothing is like a food magnet.

        … Not that that’s the point…

      • BrooklynBomber

Yeah…. I think it’s not the ultimate version of this look for her, but overall I like it.

  • StellaZafella

This is a time when I kinda wish she’d worn the whole runway outfit…even the jacket. It just seems like a group of separates that justify each other and work as an impactful unit…and Jenny could carry it well.

    • CozyCat

Yeah, she turned a really fab, over the top look into….a pretty blouse and white pants.

And I completely agree–She could pull off the whole look.  I wonder why she didn’t try?

  • I think she’s rocking the pants.  She just needs to tone down the lipstick.

  • I think if anyone could pull off white skinnies, she could. And she should have.

    • Sarah Dickerson

I’m not so sure.  I think that the skinny pants work better on straight up and down types, which JLo most definitely isn’t.  They’d have to be exceptionally well tailored to fit her curves well.

      • kimmeister

I agree, skinny pants just don’t work well on those with a larger hip:ankle ratio.  Then again, neither do pleated shorts, but that doesn’t keep JLo from cranking out tons of pleated booty shorts in her line at Kohl’s.

  • Gross.

  • i think the defensive position could also be in response to her location.  as in dubai.  where every local man who looks at her sees an underdressed, deliberately provocative, completely shamelss whore.

    • let me just state that, having said ^that, *I* don’t think she’s an underdressed yadda yadda.  i have simply, and unfortunately, been in this position, and it was ugly and uncomfortable as hell.

    • That’s pretty prejudiced. To be clear, I’m not saying “it’s my opinion that what your saying is pretty prejudiced”, I am saying your comment is *indisputably* prejudiced. Thatz not okay.

    • KSpence

Wow. Way to stereotype an entire culture. Well done.

    • julnyes

Do you really think JLo came in contact with locals? The last time she was around “local people” she was still a dancer on “In Living Color”.

  • Well I font hate it, which I cannot usually say for what she wears.  The unfortunate magenta lighting is very distracting.

  • alyce1213

Can’t say I like anything about this.

  • Annabelle Archer

It’s hard to decipher with all that wonky lighting, but my first instinct is to kill that lipstick color.  It’s harsh and doing her no favors at all.  If you could see a killa shoe, that would help things a lot too, I think.

  • Maybe it’s the hiddy lip color hair and lighting, but somehow this doesn’t even look like her. If it wasn’t labeled, I wouldn’t even recognize Jenny from the Block.

    • Sobaika

I think it’s the lipstick, lighting, and major contouring going on – someone got themselves a heavy-handed makeup artist. She looks like Tia Carrere.

      • mshesterp

Ha! I did not see that until now, and now I  can’t unsee it.  She really only looks like herself in the last picture, with her pouty diva face–you always know THAT’S JLo.

  • I like it unequivocally, but I own a pair of wide-legged, high-waisted white pants, haha.

  • shirab

I was so hoping for a pairs division with this one–her boy toy was looking like a total tool at this event.

  • margaret meyers

I think her clothes are alright, and I really get the retro vibe because i was THERE.  But what I am really looking at is her face.  She’s had some great work done recently… she looks like a kid.

  • SewingSiren

    Frozen face, but otherwise cute.

  • I’m thinking the outfit is largely a nod to her environment; she is in Dubai, after all. I think her instincts were screaming for skinny pants but someone helpfully pointed out that a bit of modesty was probably wise. She does look totally uncomfortable, though.

    • I was thinking the same thing:  when have you ever seen her this covered up?

  • Aurumgirl

People snicker, but the old rule holds true:  White pants in the end of November always look foolish.  I think this is why the look fails.  This would look a lot better in July.

    • AnneElliot

Maybe those rules don’t apply in the Middle East?  People wear bright colors all year round in Florida, not sure about white.

      •  I don’t think that “rule” applies anywhere but small sections of the US!

  • Pants_are_a_must

    Her make up is comsumptive.

Other than that, this look isn’t amazing, but it’s not disastrous. Maybe the accessories could be different.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

I actually like the outfit. Perhaps the pants need to be hemmed an inch or two. I think the make up is way too dark.

  • marilyn

This is new:  She is matching her lipstick to her haircolor.  Jenn is locked in a time warp, like Jennifer Anniston has been.  This is her look, throwing in the odd streaks in her hair for a modern touch.  Maybe she has the color on her forearms, left over from applying the dye to her hair.  No.  We assume she does nothing herself.  So, maybe she is trying to add a new twist to the stale old JLo look.

  • golden_valley

The hair looks intentional.  I don’t get this hair trend.  My 19 year old daughter went through a phase of doing this to her hair, but she was 14 and 15 at the time.  What’s JLo’s excuse?  Or Christina Aquilara’s?

  • Kayceed

Looks a bit pedestrian, for being a Cavalli event in Dubai. She could have gotten her Liz on and worn a fabulous caftan.

  • H3ff

I’m thinking she should have gone with a metallic skirt (gold sequin maybe?) and a pair of fuck-off black strappy shoes.

Those trousers look like white sweatpants. Not fabulous, Jenny.

  • i don’t love anything about the outfit, but i love this berry coloring on her (even the lights!). who knew that magenta was miss jenny’s hue?

  • BayTampaBay

Wear the blouse with the matching pants as shown on the runway and add a solid colored jacket.

  •  Ooooo . . . a caftan!  Yes!  I love caftans!

  • The top would be easy to pair with a black skirt or anything similar but a wardrobe staple piece like that would downgrade it to attractive office wear. I can see why she went with white pants. In order to stay fabulous the top needs something visually striking to go with it. I think she should have worn the runway pants, but if not that then skinny pants or capris in a vibrant shade (pink or purple? or even some of the textured gold that keeps showing up on dresses) with fierce-as-shit shoes, and especially with the runway jacket would have been awesome. And she needs to wash that shit out of her hair. Or is that light reflecting really badly? It’s hard to be certain.

  • Tamara Hogan

How many women here wince anytime they see another woman of menstruation age wear a pair of white pants?

Gah! Go away, junior high memories!

    •  Haven’t worn white pants since I was 13. *flashbacks*

  • hughman

    My suggestion? Poppers.

    • formerlyAnon

This made me laugh. Which made me feel old.

  • An updo, a hemming, and some confidence. And maybe a different lip color

  • decormaven

Is this My Pretty Pony Hair? I’m confused. Way to add the bangles on the arm, girl. The way she’s so strongly holding her arm in front of her hip makes me think she’s not loving this look, though.

  • I saw another photo of this outfit yesterday, and it looked even worse. She was standing straight (no cocked hip) next to her boy-douche and it honestly looked like she had lost her feet in a terrible accident. Stumps. For real.

Unfortunate too, because I’d love to see Jenny looking good in some lady pants. I’d like to see somebody school us big-bottomed gals in how to rock pants that won’t 1) make our legs look even thicker, 2) make our waists disappear, and 3) make us look short.

  • unbornfawn

How much botox is in that face???

  • She should have done the entire runway look instead of the disco pants and platforms.

  • Damas (one of the sponsors of the event) is a big jewelry store in Dubai…I’m guessing the pose is to show off those enormous bracelets

  • Imasewsure

I actually like the pants on the original look although I don’t think it would work for Ms. J-Block… this doesn’t work either but it’s not awful

  • KuriousKat

Lower the waist, hem the pants, and trade in wide-leg for a wide flared boot leg and she’d have it, I think.

  • Nobody stands like that, if she’s comfortable with what she’s wearing.   The white pants ruin the look by cutting her in two, and I think she realizes it.

  • Judy_J

I love the blouse; hate the pants.  And what in god’s name has she done to her face? I’m gonna blame it on bad makeup….that lipstick is so very wrong for her; she looks oily and shiny, and her hair is just awful.  Either she got rid of all the mirrors in her house, or for some reason had them all covered up, because I feel sure if she’d seen how she looked in this outfit, she never would have left the house.

  • antheapena

I think the whole outfit is fine, just 2 things,  hem the trousers and relax/have fun with it

  • CeeQ

Honestly, a decent hem on those pants would have made a world of difference!

  • formerlyAnon

Hem the pants. Make them of a material with slightly more body so it doesn’t do such soft folds at the hem – or take the width in an inch or so, but no more. (ETA: and, in a stiffer fabric, there could be a little more ease in those pants starting at the hip. It’d be more flattering, I think.)

If she’s not comfortable with her mid-section, the simplest solution is a jacket.

Overall the pants don’t bother me as much as that the ensemble, hair & makeup scream extremely – and expensively – well maintained AND HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFE. I associate it with well-to-do wives determined not to be displaced by the younger model and in well-to-do divorcees of a certain age determined to marry even better the next time.  Not with talented performers who have proven to be successful businesswomen.

  • librarygrrl64

Is she blocking a camel toe with that clutch?

  • blumonky

Hem the pants and some fabulous shoes.

  • miagain

no thank you… I’ve had enough!

  • DAMN! She should wear that lipstick all the time! Lookin’ like a right power bitch.
(I say this as someone who’s usually put off by her submissive “please love me” wide-eyed smile.)

  • bertkeeter

Enough with the Clydesdale Hoof Platforms! They are SOOOO out!

  • kaycem

i think she actually looks good in this style of pant, but i think the material is wrong.  if they were heavier, with far more structure, they’d work much much better with this outfit.

but that face — TO DIE.  dying for that berry lipstick / -gloss.

  • Bethany Fairbrother

Her make up and hair are worse than the outfit….which is saying volumes.  The out fit was totally boring.  P.S.  J-Lo: Stop trying so hard.  You’ve been in the lime light for over 20 years.  Get real with yourself.  That does not mean you can’t be sexy as hell.  It just means you need to be sexy as hell as a 40 something, not a 20 something.

  • bitterk

First the good news.  I like the white pants and top on her.  It’s very Miami JLo.  Starts to go a little south from there.  The shoes, what little I see, look hiddy and the hair?   Ooof!

  • L.

How about a well fitted, slightly draped skirt with some killa but not focus pulling shoes?

  • julnyes

Hem the pants and un-zzush the blouse and I would be happy with this look.

  • Trisha26

Why not just go crazy and wear the entire runway outfit? (Then she could actually dye her hair the insane colors created by the lights here and get away with it.)

  • ChelseaNH

What about grey pants?  Not as severe as black.

  • quiltrx

Way too summery for the season.  And NO to the vampire lips.

Jokes aside, I like the idea of the white fitted pant. Less impact but more chic

  • ccm800

please she’d dye her hootch that color if she thought she could get a gram of press out of it. What an inordinate amount of celebrity for such a mediocre talent.

  • A white wrap around skirt would do it quite nicely in keeping with the best the 70’s have to offer. Dont know what shoes she’s wearing there, but if they were a stacked chunky heel platform pump, like, Pura Lopez, it would give a chic modern slant to that disco fab outfit.

  • RzYoung

My suggestion would be pass her a wet wipe for that make up, put her in a cab and send her home

  • Palazzo pants. Not that tight mom-jean/disco era top to the trousers. Then white whide-legged pants would have worked, I think.

  • I love the look!

  • I’m thinking the matching pant from the collection would have helped her out here.

  • bd73

    black leather skinnies?

  • chitowndg

I would have gone withe the matching pants, with or without the jacket.

  • Well you could set it on fire, that would be an improvement.  Seriously hate the lipstick.   HATE.  The belt does the outfit no justice…can we say matchy matchy with those shoes, which I also loathe (can stacked platforms die already?).  Maybe, and this is a huge maybe, she rocked it with a black belt, a little less 80’s bangle and some regular stilettos then MAYBE I wouldn’t be having In Living Colour flashbacks.

  • lacy Betters

I don’t love the dark lip on her.
