IN or OUT: Solange Knowles in H&M

Posted on November 05, 2012

We’re pretty sure this is an OUT for us, but we’re throwing it out to y’all for the final word.

Solange Knowles attends the opening of H&M store in Mexico City wearing an H&M top and skirt paired with Fendi sandals.

Fendi Violet Faille Colorblock Ankle Strap Sandals

See, we like:

  • The top
  • The skirt
  • The shoes
  • The hair

But we don’t think any of them really go together. Obviously, the top and skirt are meant to go together but we think they’d both look so much better paired with a solid color item in a complementary color. And we love her hair here, but we think it’s a bit too much for such a busy outfit. That hair, with a slinky gown, would be fierce. Paired with this outfit, it makes her look like a crazed secretary. If nothing else, she should have avoided tucking that blouse in. It ruins the line and it seems to be giving her a tummy bump. Or maybe the skirt’s just unflattering in general. Either way, it’s not working.

Et vous, kittens? Can this outfit be saved with some better styling or is it hopeless?

Vote Now!

IN! It’s got possibilities!

OUT! Go home and start over!

Jaime King’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer homage was voted OUT by the Buffy-hating kittens.

OUT. OMG no. There’s just way too much going on all at once. Also, the outfit is giving me retina burn.

      • Lori

The skirt and sleeves are giving me Q^bert flashbacks. I loved that game back in the day, but I don’t think it’s a good association for clothing.

        • http://twitter.com/iJenmac Jennifer McClory

I totally yelled, “Q-Bert!” when I saw that print.

          • Lori

Thank goodness it wasn’t just me.

            • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

WHAT is with Solange and Qbert prints? I thought to myself, “Qbert is having a fashion moment or something,” because I knew there was another post of someone wearing a metallic gown with a similar print. Lo and behold, it was Solange. So maybe it’s not that Qbert is having a moment, but Solange is having a moment with Qbert.

    • lucyloo222

OUT – Any outfit that makes a woman with her body look fat with sagging boobs should be burned.

      • 3boysful

Agree.   My first thought was she was going bra-less.  Upon further reflection, I think she is booby AND short-waisted, so this higher waisted skirt with tucked-in blouse does her no favors.

    • gabbilevy

OUT OUT OUT. Girl that is not a good look. Love the hair though. I’m not sure that top is redeemable, but the skirt’s cute.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Totally agree – the top should not exist.

        • snevhead

Although, I can see it on a flat-chested girl, not tucked in over skinny cropped pants. No?
But the boobs on this?? Lordy!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1832126583 Mary Lauer

Out. Not sure how, but that top/skirt combo manages to give her both droopy boobs and a tummy pooch. Neither of which I think she has in reality.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Out  Its simply too many elements, patterns and colors all at once.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Crazed secretary is exactly what I was thinking before I even read it.  Even for Solange this is just too much cray.  All seperately is fantastic, but together is insane. OUT.

      • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

Yeah, out for me as well.  Which is a shame cuz I love the colors in the pattern and also her hair.  But not all at once!

    • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

I think if she hadn’t tucked the shirt and maybe belted it – but it’s still a lot of look.

    • geans

I agree, everything but not together. The effect of putting the shirt with the skirt creates a “chest square,” which nobody wants.

    • schadenfreudelicious

      it’s vertigo inducing, OUT

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I think if she’d untucked the shirt and maybe added a skinny belt to define her waist and break up the busy nature of the patterns, it would work better. As is, alas, OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/jack_attack88 Jackie Stewart

I feel like this is so far out and away, you can’t see it anymore. (Which is rather impressive, seeing as it’s hard to miss.)

    • BuffaloBarbara

I kind of like the shoes?

The skirt set his hideous, and would be no matter who was wearing it.

I dig the natural hair, but for some reason, it seems to be fighting with the neckline.  It’s like wearing an utterly fabulous piece of jewelry that you can’t see against a bad print.

    • lalagigi

OUT. Amazingly unflattering on such a beautiful woman.

    • lovelyivy

OUT. I want to give her an in for the hair, which is TREMENDOUSLY awesome, but everything else is pretty but wrong, and she needs a better bra STAT.

    • nannypoo

I was trying to think of how to defend it when I realized that it’s indefensible. I hate it.

    • LauraWL

In. I would absolutely wear this. It is CRAZY and I love it.

    • decormaven

Out, unfortunately. If that outfit makes her look poochy, no way would I even attempt to wear it. Love those shoes, though.

    • Jessi03

OUT.  A skinny girl should never have a FUPA due to bad fashion choices.

    • Janet B

      My eyes!

      The shirt is horrible.  OUT

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KBNJ6GJTXYEE6BON3WGK6KEGT4 Elizabeth

OUT. Although I really like the color combo, the cut of the blouse isn’t flattering to her figure, and tucking it into the skirt just made it worse. I love her hair, however. I always give Solange a thumbs-up for doing fierce hair the right way. And she looks happier here; the other day she looked so depressed.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

OUT.  Tucking in that shirt made it an all-out disaster.

    • Mary229

This is an OUT for me.   She’s a lovely woman with an awesome figure but this is just too much of everything at once.  Out.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=677547537 John Hodgins

Boy, she must really be a fan of the Minnesota Vikings with those shoes!

    • Jangle57

No, no and absolutely no way.  OUT

    • Pants_are_a_must

Nope nope nope, she’s a walking optical illusion. OUT.

    • Sara__B

I hope Solange never stops taking risks and having fun with fashion, but this is doesn’t flatter her at all. OUT, but I love her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/deb.rowland.3 Deb Spencer Rowland

Somebody played too much QBert as a child. OUT

    • TSkot

I don’t think anyone would look good in that outfit:  WAY out.

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

It’s an out for me, but I do think changing out one or two things might have made it all come together.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Wednesday Addams

I like everything here. But it doesn’t work together. The shirt is especially not ok. Take all these pieces and use them separately and I’ll rethink it.
      OUT.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

I only disagree about her hair. If she had taken the pair-just-one-of-these-with-a-neutral-color-piece advice, the hair would be perfect, and even a sleek pony couldn’t overcome the busy-ness of wearing both the top and the skirt.
      But yeah, OUT.

    • NC_Meg

Out! Pair the top with some skinny jeans (or a solid skirt) and pair the skirt with a simple, solid top and we’d have a winner. I LOVE the shoes, those can stay no matter what she pairs the other pieces with. I’m not feeling the hair at all, though. It looks deflated but too voluminous all at the same time and it’s confusing. Unrelated: In the second photo, she looks a lot like Whitney Houston.

      • Jennifer Coleman

I would agree about the separates – pick one or the other. Iffy on the shoes. Regarding the hsir, she’s not trying to have a perfect, oval ‘fro. The crown is not supposed to reach for the heavens. I think it’s all kinds of big n’ awesome. She’s channeling Charlie Brown’s friend with the naturally curly hair (sans bangs) more than Whitney to me. And I would give big props to her makeup, especially the lip color.

        • Adriana_Paula

I appreciate the Frieda shout out!

    • AlexisPayne

      Out!!! But love the hair

    • Aurumgirl

      Hair and shoes are wonderful.

    • kayleymaybe

OUT.  It makes a belly pooch where (I’m fairly certain) none exists.  As a mama of two and (somewhat proud) owner of a belly pooch myself, I am personally offended when skinny starlets do their body a disservice by creating one.

    • carolynmo

Out! However, I really love the shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/lolacestmoi Veronika Kaufmann

touché on the hair observation: if it were sleek, she’d look perfect. Otherwise, I really like it. The shoes are fab with it. Definitely in.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Love your hair, but Baby, burn those clothes.

    • http://promiscuouslola.com/ Cate

OUT. Like you said, it’s all gorgeous, just not together.

    • unbornfawn

OUT. That skirt and top are whole lot of ugly.

    • GorgeousThings

Except for the Donna Summer hair – OUT

    • afabulous50

Out.  I can’t believe she can stand upright with all that hair.

      • 909girl601world

What? Why wouldn’t she be able to?  Are you unable to stand with the hair on your head?

    • Trisha26

      OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

      My eyes are hurting. OUT

    • l_c_ann

      Out.

I would not have guessed that those are separates.  They fit badly enough to be a one size fits (Ha!) all dress.

    • Judy_S

OUT. I would give it an in if she hadn’t tucked the top in, maybe, so “it has possibilities” but she didn’t take advantage of them. Love the hair, though, period.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

Out. But the skirt and the shoes are SO CUTE.

    • sk8tfan

      My eyes! MY EYES! Aieeeeeeee….

    • filmcricket

It’s weird, the last two times we’ve seen her she’s messed up the hair – this ‘do was called for with the Badgley Mischka gown, whereas sleek would have been the way to go with this outfit.

Not that that would have helped much. Individually I like the top & skirt, but they shouldn’t be worn together. The shoes should be burned. OUT.

    • teensmom99

OUT–girl, that is not your blouse.  She is too shapely for that top.  A plain shirt and this would be great on her.  And I want those sandals.

    • fungstyle

it’s out as is, but could be an in if she went with a simpler, less on-point shoe, a sleek hair style (i’m thinking a simple ponytail) and got the whole thing tailored to fit in a more flattering way – i’d shorten the shirt just a bit and take in the blouse at the sides, as well as advise her to leave the top button open on the shirt.

    • Cathy S

Too much pattern hurts my eyes. Out.

    • altalinda

The way she’s wearing the top and skirt make her look short-waisted and paunchy.  Out.  But thank goodness she’s gone back to the ‘fro.

    • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

In, by the power of her hair alone!

    • alyce1213

Out! This is ugly enough to be a Stella McCartney pattern mash-up.

    • MaryanneGirl

If you relax your eyes, you can see the Statue of Liberty!

I’m sorry, I thought I was in middle school looking at those Magic Eye 3D books again…

      OUT.

    • SapphoPoet

OUT. That outfit hurts my eyes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

I’m too distracted to vote by the romney ads that keep talking to me everytime i open one of your pages today.  this is what i get for being in the state of ohio though.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I agree with you, TLo. The pieces are nice, but when you add them up they are less thank the sum of their parts. Out.

    • homofascist

I would have like to have seen the blouse untucked and then…maybe?

    • Beardslee

Out, for the reasons you describe

    • mmc2315

Oh my.  What has happened to her?!  Miss Solange, are you depressed?!  Should I dial 911?  Sweetie, talk to me!

    • http://twitter.com/uyeahu Michelle Wilson

Out. Mostly because of the top. I’d be fine with the skirt and shoes and hair if she had on a less fussy top with all of it. Something really simple that isn’t trying so hard.

    • AuntJentie

      Out Out Out

    • TieDye64

Easy OUT. That’s a whole lotta’ crazy going on there. Plus, the prints and the tucked in blouse make her look thick.

    • ellabob

My eyes hurt!!!!  love the shoes though..

    • J. Preposterice

I kind of love it.  And her.   And how this outfit is INSANE and so very her all at once.

    • call_me_schmeg

i love me some crazytown. IN.

    • Kate4queen

Out, I like each item individually but together they hurt my eyes

    • lesmaha

      out.

    • PastryGoddess

OUT the outfit needs better styling

    • yulaffin

      Fugly.  That is all.

    • Pennymac

The skirt and shirt pairing just gave me a mild optical seizure….

    • mjude

      OUT

    • poggi

I appreciate that she is trying something different, is wearing color, is mixing patterns, has lovely hair, and looks vivacious and happy.  But it’s too much and too hard to focus.  So an E for effort but also an O for out.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

Out. It give her an imaginary tummy which is a crime.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

OUT. It would be an in if she wore a better bra and hadn’t tucked in the shirt so that it looks like an unflattering chest panel on an otherwise nice dress.

    • lalahartma

      Out.  Sorry.

    • ThaliaMenninger

      Test patterns are out.

    • gsk241

That’s only an IN if she’s on her way to an LSU game.  In which case, it’s still an OUT.

    • kaycem

i will always and forever vote solange IN.

    • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

there was never a question. this is SO. SO. SO out.

    • LambeeBaby

She has “Mahogany” head (hair and make up rocks) which is awesome. If only we could remove her head from her body…I suppose it would be easier to just take her clothing off though.

    • Samantha Irene

Kinda love it. IN – for always putting it out there –  and for looking like a 70’s half nuts half sexy secretary.

    • DaveUWSNYC

      Dizzy-making. OUT.

    • jmorino08

OUT! The way it’s tucked in and bunched up in the middle makes her look waaaay thicker in the middle than she actually is. The shoes are cute, though.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

If she isn’t pregnant, it’s an OUT.

    • leftcoastpickle

      out

    • Jessica O’Connell

      MY EYES. They burn. OUT.

    • mike__tv

      Agreed. Out.

    • rissa42210

Oh, no no no no!  OUT!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

i wonder what it would have looked like with the shirt untucked?

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      Out.

    • MilaXX

OUT. I think what messed it up is that she tucked the top in when it looks like it should have been worn out. The result is that somehow her boobs look saggy and she looks preggers, pretty much ruining the look. Shame because the hair and face look great, although I think the shoes is both too busy and too matchy for this look.

    • ojosazules

A total waste of fabulous hair. Don’t like the shirt, the skirt, the shoes. Out.

    • http://www.facebook.com/brookelas Brooke Unti

OUT! It’s all wrong, when it could have been so right. None of that belongs on the same body at one time.

      • http://www.facebook.com/brookelas Brooke Unti

I WILL say, though, that those colors are great on her skin tone.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Is this dress some sort of vision test? Then I fail. OUT!

    • crash1212

OUT. Lord. Whoever let her out of the house with that tunic TUCKED into the skirt should be un-friended immediately. Hair is too much for this – although I love it. LOVE the shoes and even like them with this outfit.

    • MissFern

an illusory tummy pouch on a skinny girl is just a crime.

    • karena10

Out.  The print is way too busy and the shoes belong with a different outfit.

    • marilyn

Out.  Blouse should be out.  It still does not work, but it would be a little better.

    • sleepycat

I am going to call this an IN, the hair is out of place but I think she looks smashing.

    • http://twitter.com/anibellee Lynsey M.

Somewhere between OUT and Girl, This is Not Your Look.  I think there’s a stick insect Hollywood lady out there somewhere could make this work.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

      It’s making me dizzy. Out.

    • Qitkat

The skirt print reminds me of one of those old ads where they covered the walls, the floor, the sofa, the coffee table, the accessories and the model all in the same print. Damned if I know what they were advertising, but it stopped you cold, trying to figure it all out.

You know, I’m going to give this an IN, everything is as you said but for an opening of H&M in Mexico City I think it totally works. Even though I laughed when I scrolled down initially.

    • librarygrrl64

      Ooof, definitely an OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I want to like it, but it’s OUT. I like the pieces individually (except those hideous shoes), but it’s too much together. And the top tucked in is doing weird things to her bust. It makes her look like she has a HUGE uniboob.

ETA: It also looks like she has some lower tummy excess …um… baggage, and I know that’s not there either.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KZBBNYDMMMALGCUZSAFXWUWQ24 NYCKay

Out! That blouse should have been worn out with a small belt, with the sleeves and skirt in the same pattern it truncates her torso.

    • kimmeister

      Out. Too busy.

    • demidaemon

I feel like I am about to have a fashion seizure from this outfit. Or perhaps a real one. There is way too much going on, and none of it goes with anything else. Though, I do like the return to the more voluminous, natural hair. Still, OUT.

    • Donna Schmidt

      Out

    • margaret meyers

      no.

    • littlemac8

OUT:  This marriage of clashing prints is ugly colors cannot be saved!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/X33FSB3MG6NSA4OH2OF67PUKAY Graeme

I love it, actually, because it looks like she’s having a great time in it and she’s aware of how insane it might look.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Ugly outfit.  Too bad that she looks so cute otherwise. Love her hair. Still it’s an OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/nonchalantanna Anna

      This was a question? No.

    • AnneElliot

      “Crazed secretary” is right.  OUT.

And I completely agree with TLo, my first thought was, “That top would be so much better with a solid pant or skirt.”  They’re training me well. . . .too bad I can’t dress myself as well as I can criticize celebrities.  Oh well.

    • NCDFan

      Lots of bad judgement; OUT

    • another_laura

In. For the ‘fro and for yes, the possibilities.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

It makes her look like she has a saggy old woman bosom. Anything that makes you look like you have saggy old woman bosom is an OUT.

    • akprincess72

That is Julia Sugarbaker style hair, I’m loving it.

    • formerlyAnon

Out. And I agree with your reasoning as to why.

    • RzYoung

I actually like it …! and I LOVE her hair

    • Contralto

What would make the outfit work:

a better bra – she is too young for them to be riding that low
unbutton the first and second buttons
      something to define the waist

LOVE the hair.  I love it whenever I see celebrities wearing their hair natural.  Too many of our young girls still think of hair as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for it to suit me.  Just say no to the creamy crack.

    • Noelle Haland

Sorry, but OUT. Way too much going on, and I just can’t with those Mardi Gras sandals.

    • maggiemaybe

I love it all. Especially the hair. Totally gorgeous.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

OUT.  She never should have tucked in the blouse, which is actually pretty cute.  The shoes are pulling too much focus, if that is possible with that outfit.

    • http://twitter.com/kerryev kerryev

I’ll never like it with those shoes, but settle the hair down and put on a solid jacket and you could wear for-reals.

IN she is serving up donna summer realness.

    • http://twitter.com/LenaInTheSky Lena Heartfilia

no, no no. I agre that it MIGHT be able to work separately with like black to contrast. but the pattern offends me either way. it’s not cute. Her hair and make up? FEEEYACE. *finger snap* but all these elements all together? Honey, no.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Louise-Bryan/1177213326 Louise Bryan

My first thought:  “Eek!!”  My second thought:  OUT!

    • FrayedMachine

Oh this is so unfortunate. She usually looks great, but am I the only one who thinks she looks a little preggers in this outfit? The fit around her midsection is just no good.

    • guest2visits

I thought this was a great dress; before seeing it as 2 pieces. I may be a minority but I think the whole look is beautiful on her.
The pieces would still be pretty cool as separates, too.
