IN or OUT: Julie Bowen in Naeem Khan

Posted on November 06, 2012

The last two IN or OUT posts were either looks we didn’t like or looks we were fighting over, so let’s flip the script and feature a look we pretty much love.

Julie Bowen attends the 1st Annual Baby2Baby Gala in Culver City, California in a Naeem Khan purple sequin caftan gown with v-neck and blouson bodice from the Fall 2012 collection paired with Harry Winston jewelry.

Naeem Khan Sequined Kimono Gown

If nothing else, you’ve got to admit, that’s a spectacular color for her. She’s had a tendency in the past to avoid color or to wear very muted colors, so we’re thrilled to see her get her “Prince & the Revolution” on.

She also has a tendency to go for the sternum-baring gowns and unfortunately, we haven’t broken her of that habit yet.

Still, we like this, for the most part. We keep going over it and wondering if she should have done more in the jewelry department, but a dress like this doesn’t really need it. In fact, a dress like this can’t really handle more than a few pieces of jewelry without tipping over into Tacky Land, so she made the right choices here, as far as we’re concerned.

Vote Now!

Yesterday, the Bitter Kittens were feeling extra bitter and voted both Solange’s crazed secretary look and K Stew’s “I feel like I forgot something” look O to the UT.

I think I am the only person on this planet who does not like purple so I can’t comment for or against. Why am I even posting this…

    • librarygrrl64

      I don’t like purple, either.

    • miagain

I don’t love purple either… {I always think of odd women who will only wear purple}… but even I have to admit that the color of this caftan is lovely!

      • BrooklynBomber

Yes, what is that about? I call them the purple people. And they’re usually redheads (as am I, but I rarely ever wear purple). Purple head to toe.

        • My people! I don’t care for purple, but I really love this on her. Get your glam Mrs. Roper on, sweetie pie!

          • BrooklynBomber

I agree–I think this looks really good on her.

        • megohd

They call themselves purple people too. Weird.

          • BrooklynBomber

            No! Yikes.

      • marie schrader!

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I am the “green sheep” in a family of purple-lovers. This is a pretty shade and looks nice on her, though. Purple is definitely having a moment.

    • NC_Meg

I hated purple until a few months ago. Dark purple nail polish changed my mind.

    • My mother lives for purple, so much that it has become Not A Good Thing.  She passed on to me a silky purple top and skirt that didn’t fit her any more and I’m not sure what to do with it (besides not wear them together, at least).  So I can’t look at this in any kind of unbiased way either.   I think purple tends to do odd things to the wearer’s complexion.  Sigh – small “in” anyway.

  • mjude

    IN. she looks great!

  • Cheesely

dress is beautiful, color is great on her (IN) buuuuut I just don’t understand why stylists haven’t figured out how to safety pin a too-low neckline so that it doesn’t look safety pinned!

    •  Oh, good catch. Yuck.

  • IN! She is killing it!

    •  I’d even say she’s gone out the other side of IN to WERQ.

  • Joyce VG

Meh she looks comfortable and purple.  (I say it’s a Bea Arthur dress for sure) but….IN.

  • Love the sparkle and the color. IN!

  • teensmom99

IN.  At first I was thinking jewelry, but of course dear TLo are right re jewelry with this dress.  I think with less sternum and something better with the hair this would be a WERQ.

  • AuntJentie

    In, the color is beautiful

  • kayleymaybe

IN!  Best she’s looked in a long time!

  • J. Preposterice

Can’t we say “IN!  BEA ARTHUR!”

    Because.  YES.

    • tsid2012

You beat me to it!  I am totally a fan of Bea Arthurs style for her at the time.  I’m not a fan of purple but I do like this.

  • librarygrrl64

It’s a bit “Grande Dame of Hollywood,” but she looks better than usual. IN.

    • JMB_edits

I had the same thought.  All she needs is a turban!  But same thing, I like it on her!

  • She is beautifully styled, I can’t quibble there, and the color is lovely.  But something about the cut of the gown makes her look like a Lollipop Head.

  • IN. Even though she’s standing in a bit of a fabric puddle, I really love the dress and the color looks fab on her!

  • Janet B

  • decormaven

Muted in; I’d like to have seen it with the original neckline. It’s the focal point of the design. And who doesn’t love that ring?!

  • 70’s nightgown.

  • IN. LOVE the color.

  • Caftan……….now THERE’S a style I didn’t think I’d see ever again.

She is definitely working this, so much that you don’t really notice it’s a caftan.  For that, she gets an IN.

  • L.

IN!  She can get away with the plunge when the arms and legs are so covered.

  • chitowndg

  • ThatPeterG

  • formerlyAnon

So what if Bea Arthur might have worn something similar? One needn’t always be daring to be in.

  • That is a spectacular “lounging around the house” dress.

    •  Except for the sequins. They don’t look all that comfortable to sit on.

  • In_Stitches

The fabric looks a little strippery to me which I don’t love and I wish it was a simple sleeveless dress with a plunging neckline instead of this droopy boob-to-arm-sleeved monster, but after all that hate, I still have to give it an IN if we’re grading on the curve.

  • StellaZafella

I think this is probably the most comfortable and yet elegant thing a woman could wear on the RC. I agree with the Bea Arthur love.
It made me think that, just a bit, if it WERE Bea, she’s have the shoulder pads in and it would go in the direction of the 30’s costume designer Adrian…but then, it would be in Gold or Silver.

  • In, completely in.

  • IN. I want that ring so bad!!

  • IN. It’s a lovely dress, and she looks lovely in it. I think Bea would approve.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

    IN. Disco fabulous.

    • MoHub

       PR designers: take note.

  • Best she’s ever looked.

  • Lilithcat

Gorgeous color.  I like the look overall.  But not the leather clutch with glittery fabric.

    On balance, in.

  • Jenna621

I love this.  She looks stunning.  IN.  (And I love wearing purple.  Us pale girls with the rosy undertones look great in it!)

  • WittyCism

In, for sure.  She hasn’t looked this soft and beautiful in a while.  It’s all been bony shoulders and elbows, and yes, sternum, so this is an improvement by far.

  • Love that deep violet on her. It’s a pretty color for almost everyone, and I’m surprised more designers don’t use it.

  • MoHub

    So—dolman sleeves are back?

  • Love it. I think a long tassel necklace would have worked with this, personally. IN

  • In! I think this is the best she’s looked in ages.

  • this probably doesn’t sound all that complimentary, but i’d say it’s a definite improvement for her.

  • TieDye64

IN, though it sort of looks like she’s melting in the floor, and a stronger lip color would’ve made her makeup perfect. Minor quibbles.

  • OUT. I like purple, I like sequins, but  it’s completely not her.

  • mellbell

Out. I couldn’t quite put into words what about this look didn’t work for me — “aging diva” came closest — but “Bea Arthur” nails it.

  • MzzPants

    IN.  Fab.

  • AlexisPayne

In! This is so pretty, she looks a lot softer than she usually does.

  • That’s a LOT of purple, but the cut and drape are good on her.

  • RoxieRider

    In. Swoon.

  • Kathy_Marlow

Such an IN for me.  I love the color and the shape is good for her.

  • Imasewsure

Love it on the model… only kind of like it on her so it’s a muted OUT for me. It’s a bit Jolie-Pitt for my taste but the fabric is beautiful

    • l_c_ann

I thought it made the model look hip-ful.

      • Imasewsure

Yes I ‘d agree but it’s probably just the lines of it overall I like better on the model…. or maybe just the superior lighting! Think it’s just not a true IN for me but it’s pretty

  • claudemtl777

While I love the color, and think she looks chic overall, the first thing that came to mind was Marian Mercer, the hostess/dining room manager on “It’s a Living”…

    • Oh, we love that. We wish we’d thought of it.

      • claudemtl777

Ok…Color me giddy with excitement….Btw, you guys’ profile was featured in the Montreal gazette a month ago…I can say: “I knew you when…”

        •  It was? This is the first we’re hearing of any profile in the Montreal Gazette. We’ll have to track it down.

          • claudemtl777

If memory serves, it was a reprint of the NYT article

  • jilly_d

  • She looks awesome. I say IN.

  • B_C_J

IN!!!  Fantastic color on her. Love the retro feel and even thought it’s a caftan-style dress, it is still sufficiently body conscious so that she is not swallowed up by it.  I would have perhaps added one diamond broach either at the waist or at the bottom of the neckline to fully commit to the total glamour look but that’s a very minor detail.

  • crackineggs

  • sleepycat

OUT! you hit it on the nose with the color commentary, Bea Arthur all the way

  • Patricia Gillett

I adore purple. This is IN by a little bit for me. Almost became out because of the length but the ring saved her.

  • Kristy Evans

IN. I can’t say no to sequins.

  • jw_ny

IN but, its a bit on the mature side.  I look at it and think ‘thank god she didn’t opt for a turban with it!’  😉

  • MissFern

  • It’s… okay. I want a contrasting belt, just a pop of color. But otherwise, she looks fabulous. IN

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Out.  And then there’s Maude…

  • rissa42210

In!  It looks lovely.  The clutch is a little meh…

  • In! As the Fug girls mentioned, it’s like a super fancy caftan and I can get behind that.

  • bertkeeter

Julie B is an amazing actress. I like dress n color….skirt could fit a little better?

  • I’m going with IN. That gown looks like it took a lot of nerve to wear.

  • marilyn

In.  She did it just right.

  • oatmealpie

In! Her hair looks really great here, too.

  • NCDFan

  • msdamselfly

  • Call me Bee

Oh my gosh!  The first thing I thought of as I scrolled down…was Maude!  But–I understand there’s a 70s throwback trend going on, and while I was never a fan, even in the 70s, I can appreciate the fashion-ness of it.  For others.  This is a great example, and the color is awesome on Miss Julie.  Well styled, too.  IN!

  • kimmeister

In.  The softness in the shape is a nice change over the harsh, angular looks she usually goes for.

  • Jangle57

I love the dress color but the sleeves are bordering on matronly for me.  However, I feel that’s minor so IN

  • MissMariRose

  • Kayceed

I love caftans with a defined waist – IN!

  • altalinda

    Out.  Too mature.

  • poggi

In.  She looks pretty and soft, but still colorful and glamorous–not an easy combo.

  • LOVE IT.

  • demidaemon

I think this might be a mite matronly, but that could be do to the bareness and lack of accesories around the bosom area. Still, I can’t deny that she looks stunning. IN.

  • ellabob

A little too mature for her, but spectacular color…

  • I love this and I normally hate purple? What gives? IN.

  • unbornfawn

Oh dear, is that safety pinned or tack with a couple of quick stitches down there at the bottom of the sternum? She misses more often than she hits. This is pretty good, I’ll give her an IN. I gotta say, I am not a fan of all the pale practically non existent lipstick the lady stars are favoring these days. This look could use a stronger lip color.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

The dress is awesome, but Julie Bowen can’t pull it off. That dress belongs to Solange. And I disagree about the jewelry, I think she needs giant gold earrings. Well, Julie Bowen would look ridiculous wearing that dress and giant earrings. But Solange would look amazing.

  • Out: Unless she’s at the premiere of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

  • IN

  • MGMcD

In – I love purple, and since she has a pretty “boyish” figure and often goes to sort of severe looks, it softens her up a bit.

  • trisker

  • Out. It just screams “Night of a Thousand Stars You’ve Never Heard Of”.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Love it! I think she looks great. IN!

  • elirt

IN! She usually looks too harsh considering her sharp features and this is the softest and most feminine she’s looked in a long time.

  • PrunellaV

If Modern Family gets cancelled, she can play Mrs. Roper in the Three’s Company remake. OUT.

  • In.

  • In! sparkly caftan!

  • MilaXX

OUT! BEA ARTHUR! She’s too tiny for this dress.

  • Kate4queen

In for the dress but she needs a stronger lip color or face paint to really make it work

  • karena10

I have nothing against purple, but purple and sparkly are just too much together (unless you are under 10 years old).

  • Qitkat

    No. Sequin googolplex.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I was thinking Rue McClanahan more than Bea Arthur, but I’m still on Golden Girl turf. OUT.

  • Judy_J

I wish she’d worn some sort of tiny sparkly necklace with that dress.  The color is spectacular (purple is a particular favorite of mine), but I’m not sold on this look.  It appears that she’s got the neckline pinned so it isn’t open to the waist as is the runway version, but it is done so clumsily that it looks tacky.  It’s not bad enough for an out, but I can’t give it an in, either.  Guess I’m just one of the undecideds.

  • Woah.  My first thought was “Bea Arthur at a disco.”  Not that it isn’t fabulous anyway…. It just seems a little mature for her.

  • ChelseaNH

IN.  The color could be toned down a tad, but yay!  Color!

  • Lisa Kramp

It’s the weirdness, man! The shiny purple weirdness! I can’t handle it, man! Out.

  • TSkot

    Bea Arthur it is.  OUT

  • Haley Buchanan

Yes. The fit and neck on the top are a bit on the odd side, but, other than that, it’s definitely an IN.

  • love the color, hate the shiny. but an IN for trying.

  • Really flattering on her. Finally giving Elizabeth Banks something to worry about on the RC. IN!!

  • Annabelle Archer

    IN and Bea Aurthur!

  • jmorino08

I love that dress, but she looks terribly uncomfortable in it, which makes me think maybe it’s a great dress, but not a great dress for her… Still, I am calling IN. Embrace your Cher side, Julie!!

  • LittleKarnak

    Bea Arthur is never Out!!!!

  • zenobar

IN.  Also, I would rock the living shit out of this dress…I’ll take one in emerald green, thankyouverymuch.

  • margaret meyers

In.  I even like the casual hair.

  • frannyprof

  • love it!!

  • Trisha26

In. Maybe a “little” heavy looking but it’s gorgeous. I don’t mind the sternum-baring as long as baby heads – either vertical or horizontal – are hidden and ribs don’t show. (I know these actresses/models are thin but I don’t need to see their bones.)

  • SophieCollier

    IN.  She looks really good!

  • quiltrx

IN…in a delightfully 70s award show/Mrs. Roper kind of way.

But it could have been a WERQ with a Leontyne Price turban!!!

  • zelavie

    IN!  Gorgeous!

  • IN. Love the colour

  • kaycem

IN for her vintage halston realness.

  • random_poster

    IN. She looks great!

  • DylanCurtis

  • Love it, love it, LOVE IT. That purple is stunning. It’s chic and retro and classy and elegant all at once.

  • kikisayshi

    Dorothy Zbornak.

  • kikisayshi

So that would be an OUT for me. In case that wasn’t clear.

  • crash1212

    IN. Best she’s ever looked.

  • Sweetvegan

    In! She looks great!

  • Bailey Debruynkops

in even though she’s way overrated in general

  • IN

  • AnneElliot

I’m on the fence.  I love purple, but that’s a LOT of purple!  The sequins are pushing it.  And my first thought was Bea Arthur.

  • aristida_girl

IN, love the color, her hair and skin look good, and I like the jewelery

  • Love to see that color on an RC! And when did “Bea Arthur” become an insult? 🙂 IN for me!

  • In.  This relaxed chic is more her schtick than the super girly girl stuff she’s been doing lately at awards shows.  And the color does look great on her.

  • mmc2315

  • lalahartma

    I can’t decide!  I think out.

  • stagmania

    IN. Beautiful color.

  • CheriCPat

Out.  Send that dress to someone thirty years older.

  • oohsparkley!

  • I love this dress, but I don’t feel like it’s HER dress. I would much rather see someone else wearing it. OUT.

  • Gener1c

In.  I love her hair so much.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • In, even though she’s not an old woman.  Thank goodness she didn’t pair it with a red hat.
