IN or OUT: Jaime King

Posted on November 01, 2012

Maybe it’s because we’ve been mainlining it on Netflix recently, but one look at Jaime’s getup and we blurted out “Buffy the Vampire Slayer!”

Jaime King attends the Samsung Galaxy Note II Beverly Hills Launch Party.

Tom Ford Gold T-strap Sandal

Not that it’s a bad thing. The motorcycle-jacket-over-a-dress look has passed into the realm of the classic;  even before Sarah Michelle Gellar donned her A-line maxi-skirts and leather jackets to do some staking. Granted, it does feel a bit ’90s, but we think she looks cute here. That’s a pretty dress, although the sash at the waist is distracting with the jacket over it. We don’t love the cocktail ring, but pairing gold sandals with the look to bring out the gold accents in the jacket was kind of smart. We don’t quite love the hair, either. A bit too flat and un-styled. But we’re curious if our kittens will be as forgiving of the entire look as we are. Is it just a little too Buffy?

Vote Now!

OUT! Oh come on. I’m too tired to do the ’90s a second time.

The Minions with Opinions did NOT appreciate Kelly Osbourne being designated a “Style Icon,” so they voted her look OUT just to spite her. Attakittens.

  • It’s not a horrible look, but now that you’ve planted Buffy in my brain, I can’t help but think Buffy would have done it better, somehow.

I was always more of a Buffy and Spike girl myself. Angel was too broody.

I’ll give it a small in.

    • mia

I can’t even with Spike’s hair. Angel foreva

      • Nelliebelle1197

SPIKE. Angel was too f’ing noble and he walked away too easily

    •  Yep. Buffy would have done it way better. And it should have been Buffy and Willow. OUT.

      • sweetestsith

I hated this look when SMG wore it, and I hate it now… OUT. It always just looks awkward and silly to me.

         Also, Buffy & Faith forever!

    • formerlyAnon

Buffy’d look better mostly in the years when she was under 23, also if wearing shoes that let you walk with a bit of badass.

Spike. Angel was fine until he started pouting.

    • iheartbuffy

  •  “IN! BUFFY + ANGEL = 4EVER, BITCHES!” This. Yes.

    • TieDye64

Yep, it’s an IN for me!

  • D

There is no such thing as “too” Buffy. IN! Also glad to hear that you two are watching Buffy – and hope that you will put together a blog post or two about my favorite show of all time (or a post for each episode – a unborn faun can dream, can’t he?).

    • In_Stitches

If you watch Parks and Rec, Retta, who plays Donna, has been watching the show and tweeting her way through it.  Hilarity has ensued.

      • MilaXX

I follow her on twitter and while I’m not a Buffy fan, Retta is hilarious.

      • lovelyivy

This will absolutely make me go watch parks and rec, which I never really gave a shot.

        •  Withhold judgment until you reach Season 2, as the 6 episodes of Season 1 aren’t really indicative of funny that is the entire rest of the run.

          • iheartbuffy

             ahem. 12 episodes.

          •  Talking Parks and Rec, not Buffy (<3 them both!)

        • Sobaika

I’m jealous of all the hilarity you’re about to experience.

    • iheartbuffy

Yes please TLo, I hope you enjoy it and will maybe blog about it!

  • Judy_J

I was never a Buffy fan, so I can’t speak to that aspect of this look.  However, I kind of like the way the leather jacket plays off the summery pastel shades of this dress.  I wish she had done something with her hair.  It looks like she just washed it and forgot to style it.  I’m feeling generous today…IN.

  • Vaniljekjeks

In.  Just for the Buffy likeness.  It would be a WERQ if she had kicky leather boots.  I will never stop loving Buffy.

    • Totally agree.  Hem length is TRAGIC for sandals. Would be sublime in boots.

      • librarygrrl64

And the boots would balance out the jacket. Agreed.

      • curiouserandcuriousest

Hem length is also tragic for kicking ass! So maybe shorter, with boots, for full-Buffy likeness?

    • I believe Buffy would have said “stylish yet affordable boots” hehe

      • iheartbuffy

but really, WHEN DOES THE SLAYER HAVE TIME TO SHOP? In all 7 seasons, you literally NEVER see her shopping

  • Imasewsure

I’m going IN with this one because I usually hate her looks and this one is cute to me. Don’t love the shoes but giving her props for not overdoing the heavy

  • another_laura

Out.  Sorry.  I wanted to like it but I don’t like the dress at all, so notwithstanding the cute-ish jacket and clever deployment of gold sandals, I can’t stand it.

    • Lori

I don’t hate the dress, but I don’t really understand wearing it in October in the northern hemisphere, leather jacket or no. No one is required to wear burnt orange or something just because of the calendar, but your fall clothes shouldn’t scream, “Spring!”

      • I agree.  And the fact that she couldn’t decide if she wanted her jacket sleeves to be zipped or unzipped is really tweaking me out for some reason.  Out, but could have been an in had the dress been a bit less Easter Parade.

    • Agree. Hate the dress.

    • Introspective

Took one look at the dress and thought “HATED IT” in my best in living color voice (a 90s look requires 90s lingo right?)

No honey. Different dress and maybe an in could have happened but this feels less kickass and more Laura Ashley. OUT

      • understateddiva

        90s dress, 90s reference.  Respect!

    • curiouserandcuriousest

I agree – I find the pattern especially awful. I don’t object to a leather jacket over a dress, but this particular dress? Nope, it’s an OUT.

  • Her hair looks horrible, it’s way too yellow. And I hate that jacket paired with that dress. Wouldn’t mind having it though so I could combine it with some nice jeans.

  • Jessi03

IN!  BUFFY + SPIKE = 4EVER, BITCHES!  Angel is too much of a sourpuss for me.

    • Vickiefantastico

Agree with both! Angel was too brooding and annoying. Spike was funny and interesting. (I’m trying not to ruin the series for you, TLo, in case you haven’t seen it yet, so I’ll leave it at that!)

      • it helped that he was tragically hot.

  • TheLaurenJean

I love everything below the neck. That hair is just tragic. The center part is a look for hardly anyone.

  • jjfg

90’s?  I wore that shit in the 80’s.  Bitch stole my look!  (Although – no heels.  Doc Martins.)

So I guess I should say IN, although it basically makes me think of an unkempt college kid.

  • Un IN petit.  There are quibbles from my camp. her makeup is curiously flat.  She needs a stronger lip color, for example.

  • Vanja

It’s an in, but barely. I like the jacket but it’s a bit too biker jacket to really gel with that dress. I don’t like ‘almost not there’ shoes, her hair and flashing the peace sign, but hey: BUFFY 4EVER, BITCHES!

  • AuntJentie

Out.  What does the dress look like without the jacket?

  • I could not love you guys any harder right now…unless you change that line to SPUFFY 4EVER, BITCHES!

    Also, in for Buffy realness.

  • Yes! We need more Buffy moments on the red carpet. In.

Although, personally, my favorite Buffy couple was Oz and Willow. Just saying.

    • iheartbuffy

       ….Willow and Tara.

  • kimmeister

I’ve never seen even 30 seconds of BTVS, so I can’t make any reference there, but she looks pretty cute.  In.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I didn’t even notice that there was a sash before you mentioned it, so that doesn’t bother me, but the contrast between the light and breezy ultra-spring dress with the very black and heavy jacket is just too great. She’s very pale, white is not her color (and I’m thinking black is not her best neutral). It’s not working. OUT.

Also, I hate Buffy (the tv show) and I don’t care who knows it.

  • Emma Przybylinski

  • MilaXX

OUT. I don’t mind the leather jacket/maxi dress combo, but I do dislike this leather jacket/maxi dress combo. The dress feels a little too summery and delicate for this look.

    • Anathema_Device

Yes, this has a “hotel fire” vibe to it…like she was in her nightgown and grabbed the first item to throw on as she shuffled out with the other guests.

  • SewingSiren

Only that but bias cut, floral, slip dress maxi, with fashion cut cycle jacket. It’s 90’s yes , but it still looks good.

  • teensmom99

OUT because I don’t like the dress. With a different dress, this is a classic style.

  • librarygrrl64

OUT for the peace sign flash alone, but also for the combo. I like the idea of it, but I feel like the black jacket and the pattern and colors of dress read like two different seasons. Maybe a different colored leather?

ETA: And, as someone pointed out up-thread, boots would have been better than sandals. IMO, they would have balanced out the jacket a bit.

  • Tatiana Luján

  • I can’t. The jacket is so aggressively tough and the dress is so aggressively twee. I know it’s a thing to pair them, but I just can’t. And then the sandals on top of everything….Out.

  • pepper76

Girl, that’s not your hair color.

  • gdougs

I like the jacket, but the dress looks like the ones I would get from J.C. Penney’s for Easter when I was younger.

  • OUT

  • fallinseattle

  • crash1212

OUT. It’s not the worst thing I’ve seen, but it sure ain’t the best. I hate those shoes and I think the dress is too light – in fabric and color – for a black leather jacket. I don’t hate the concept, just the deployment here.

  • Janet B

If she was walking down the street/shopping/pumping gas (in different shoes) I’d change my vote.

  • Yuck. Out.

  • Judih1

I don’t think the shoes work with the look and I think the dress is too summery for this time of year. Hair looks horrid – bad styling and bad color

I know the “don’t wear white after Labor Day” rule no longer applies but does this mean we have also thrown out dressing for the season? So many stars wear summer frocks in the fall/winter and New Years Eve style party dresses in the summer.

  • luciaphile

  • nannypoo

    I hate it. OUT.

  • gabbilevy

I’m INto it. The sandals are pretty.

  • AlexisPayne

Buffy and Angel 4EVER!!!! But I don’t care for the whole get-up, and the hair bugs, OUT.

  • I like it. I think it is interesting. IN!

  • Sara__B

It’s just a launch party, so she looks fine.  Except for the center part hair, which almost always gets an OUT from me.

  • l_c_ann

The jacket deserves better, the dress deserves better and the shoes deserve better.

  • Joyce VG

I like the jacket and the dress and shoes but not together. OUT.

  • carpediva

OMG, I’m too distracted by my excitation over the fact that you’re watching Buffy to even judge this outfit!  Welcome to the Scooby Gang, you guys! What part are you up to???

Note:  if you could then follow that up with Battlestar Galactica, I could die happy.

    (Oh, and alright: OUT.)

  • I’m sorry I can’t stop staring at her eyebrows. Talk about pulling focus!
IN. Yes, it’s nineties-esque, but the sandals made it. Although the hair tried desperately to pull it back to ’96.

  • MissAnnieRN

Out.  This takes me back to the 90’s.  This is one of those cases where the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts.  Love the jacket, love the shoes, I think I had that dress in 1995.  And that’s where the needle scratch is for me.  Buffy or not.

  • Patricia Gillett

OUT. These pieces are all fab but not together. Those shoes are great!

  • B_C_J

As separates, each item is very nice. Together it just looks like a very tired look that should be retired. Even when it was originally conceived, I found  the combination of tough leather jacket  and feminine, soft dress to be incongruous.  The color of her hair is appalling.  The sandals are wonderful but do not make up for the rest of the outfit. OUT

  • BazoDee

OUT. Not flattering, too washed out.

  • Qitkat

IN! I flicking love it, all of it. Probably because I would love to get away with this at my age, but would have to endure a lot of side-eye from my kids 😉

  • OUT. Your Buffy reference almost pushed me to vote IN due to nostalgia, but I just can’t with the springtime dress. It’s officially Autumn; if this same dress had lovely Fall colors and hues, I could be persuaded. But the color scheme just doesn’t work. And the “didn’t try at all” hair is a disappointment.

  • This doesn’t look cute to me, just odd.  Maybe if she had gone all the way Buffy-style, or the dress was a brighter color, or the boots someone mentioned.  As it is, it is OUT.

  • mia

Considering I was a small child during the 90’s with no interest in Buffy at the time, but have recently been watching the whole series (WHY AM I SO ADDICTED TO BUFFY, WHY) this post just made my day. The problem with their outfit is that it didn’t go Buffy ENOUGH. Where is your bobble-head pony tail Jaime King? Or your chopstick bun? Or thousands of berets?

  • Eh. It’s neither in nor out, but I guess it’s IN since I’m not actively gagging.

  • VioletFem

    IN. It’s cute and simple.

  • OUT.  I just don’t get it.

  • tereliz

I wore this same outfit to my HS graduation. With oxblood Doc Martens. In 1997.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. I like a leather jacket/dress combo but not in this instance. Mainly, that dress is a terrible color for her, her hair is too yellow, and her makeup is giving her a jaundiced look.

And women really need to stop doing the cross-legged pose in long dresses. It freaks me the fuck out.

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. I like the concept, but it’s just not working here.

  • l v

IN! For the Buffy reference alone!!!! I’m jumping on the boots-would-have-worked-better bandwagon, but I think she looks cute. Also, I love her on Hart of Dixie and find her surprisingly entertaining.

  • rosarita

Out because I am indeed too tired to recycle the 90s. I’m exhausted watching young people recycling the 80s already. I need Downton Abbey season 3, or maybe just a nap.

  • TSkot

    Meh. OUT

  • I’ve been marathoning Buffy via Netflix too! IT’S LIKE WE’RE TWINS!

IN, although she should have worn boots. This is still super cute.

  • In.

  • I *LOVE* me some Buffy (and Angel!), but there are some style trends from the 90s (and earlier) that need to be staked to death. This is one of them.

  • Very Sassy. IN.

  • Lola67

  • In. If only she had her own Mr. Pointy.

  • 3boysful

Ummm, Jaime?  You wore that in late October.  It’s a cute dress . . . for June.

  • stagmania

IN. Though I’m gonna have to change that to BUFFY + SPIKE = 4EVER, BITCHES!

  • Liz

Buffy was so formative that it’s difficult to have perspective.

  • decormaven

Jacket, I like. Shoes, I like. Dress, meh. Just because I like 2 out of 3, it doesn’t get an IN.

  • BUFFY + ANGEL = FOREVER, BITCHES!  (And Spike for the threesome!)

  • snarkykitten

terrible. some fads from the 90s need to stay in the 90s

  • marilyn

Out.  She can do better than that.  It looks like the day before laundry is done.

  • DylanCurtis

  • jw_ny

That jacket and those shoes…ok together, but neither go with that dress.

  • Corrie Hill

There’s no such thing as too Buffy!

  • Out. yawn. was it cold that day? saving gas driving a harley to RCs? nope.

  • IN! I <3 Spike!!! And I'd rather have 90s grunge back over the 80s nonsense.

  • gg80302

    Did she fire her stylist?

  • IN, but only for the Buffy callback.

  • Contralto

Out.  Bad hair.  I generally don’t mind the leather-over-dress but this combo isn’t working and I’m not sure why.

  • Trisha26

Out. The entire look is just awful.

  • quiltrx

IN.  I never watched Buffy, and I think the outfit is really cute.

I’m really starting to (sadly) that Jaime has had something done around her eyes.  They just don’t look right.

  • DCSheehan

In. Not the best version of this type of look but it works.

  • IN! Gawd, I miss floral dresses and motorcycle jackets. Oh, who am I kidding. I still wear floral dresses with leather jackets.

  • altalinda

  • SophieCollier

It’s all right, but that dress is so not in season.  Way to “Spring” for an October event.  But I don’t mind the tough girl-meets-floral party look.  This is just a sort of ho-hum version of it.  An IN but not a strong one.

  • I want those shoes.

  • kcaza

IN on the grounds that I didn’t immediately mistake her for a cleaned-up Lindsey Lohan.

(Can I ship Buffy/being a strong independent woman? Because I think she was at her best when she was unattached.)

  • demidaemon

I feel like this is a game of “One of these things does not belong.” That isn’t to say that this sort of look can’t be done. I just don’t think it should be this particular dress with this jacket. OUT.

  • Buffy and Angel 4EVA, but I’m going to give this an OUT.

  • In. Love those sandals.

  • oohsparkley!

In. Although I would have preferred a different colored dress.

  • neofashionista

  • In the first picture, she looks like she has her feet twisted! Very bad pose for that kind of dress!

  • Roxanne Pedro

Wow, are people really voting this “in” because of the Buffy reference?  I loved Buffy just as much as the next person, but this is not an acceptable outfit for 2012.  In 1996 this would have been great, but since now isn’t then…OUT!

  • formerlyAnon

Out. I’ve been looking at candid photos of college freshmen girls – this is too much like their “eww, it’s started to get *cold* out at night” look, where they wear the summery outfit they’d planned when it was 80 degrees at 4 p.m., but threw on a jacket realizing it’s be 60 or below by 10 p.m.

  • She’s pretty! IN! Don’t stake me!

  • iheartbuffy

it’s very bad mixing seasons of Buffy… could have put season of the leather pants with this jacket and it would have worked much better. HATE the dress just like I HATE all of Buffy’s dresses in the seasons of the bad dresses (3 and 4). My point is OUT. SMG would have done it SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better. Or Joss. Or whoever is responsible for the Buff ensembles.
