IN or OUT: Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney

Posted on November 08, 2012

Y’know, if she’d kept the jacket on, we’d unreservedly love this look.

Cameron Diaz attends the world premiere of ‘Gambit’ at the Empire Leicester Square in London in a Stella McCartney dress paired with Burberry sandals. Cuff by Tom Binns. Earrings by Solange Azagury Patridge. Rings by Pomellato. Clutch by Anya Hindmarch clutch.

It’s got a simple, classic elegance to it that really suits Cammy. So what’s the problem? Straps, darlings. Specifically, the placement of them. She’s square-shouldered, and like a lot of square-shouldered ladies, widely placed straps are not particularly flattering. They make her look broader up top than she actually is. And the broad, low neckline isn’t the best way for her to show off the girls, which are looking like two Tupperware bowls shoved into her dress.

We don’t think that’s enough to vote her OUT, but you kittens have an annoying tendency to have your own thoughts about such things, so we’re once again opening the voting for you to make the final call. We like this look, widely placed straps notwithstanding. Do you, kittens?

Vote Now!

IN! Classic elegance!

OUT! Linebacker dress!

It was close, but Ashley Madekwe’s dishtowel dress was ultimately voted OUT.

  • The combination of Stella McCartney and Cameron Diaz gets an OUT on principle. But an inch up and in along  the decolletage and an inch down on the waistline and this’d be fine.

    • l_c_ann

Alicia for the win.  (And for bodice redesigns for STELLA).

  • HomeOfficeGirl

It’s not a “throw her out” out, but it’s out nonetheless.
The shoes are good.  The overall colors are good.  SHE looks good.
But both the top and bottom are wonky and if the only love TLO can give is to suggest you keep the cape on, that’s not in your favor, girl.

  • VioletFem

IN. It’s not perfect, but she still looks elegant.

    • Sobaika

And that is NOT something I’d usually associate with Cammy D.

    • TieDye64

On this I must agree with you. IN.

  • vintagion

IN! Though I hear you on the straps, T&L, gotta say… this is SO MUCH better than what she’s been up to lately. And the cuff is fabu!

  • mjude

IN because i like the dress

  • IN. I like it. She looks good, age-appropriate, glamorous.  I think the top of the dress shows off her arms but doesn’t look too butchy.

And let’s be honest: I’ll always give a thumb up for a dress with pockets. Kryptonite.

    • Agree. As a girl with square, athletic shoulders, I admire how she has balanced them out with a feminine look. Linebacker comment feels off sides. (Get it, off sides!) Ok sorry.

      • mshesterp

Ha!  Love it.  As a fellow girl with athletic shoulders, I didn’t pick up immediately that it wasn’t flattering, and I’m usually sensitive to that stuff–I thought she looked rather pretty in it.  So IN!

  • It’s an IN. There’s a cleanness to it that I love.

    • kschwarting

I agree.  It’s not perfect, but it’s clean-lined and it shows off her fabulous upper body.  I could spend all day at the gym and never be a fraction as toned as she is.

    • And who knew the lovely cleanness and Stella could be in the same sentence, much less in the same dress?!  IN!  Well done Cammy!

  • gabbilevy

Wait… that’s a Stella dress? Well bowl me over! I really like it. IN.

  • alyce1213

In, but with an ‘against it’ on the grounds that it’s a McCartney.
The bodice doesn’t fit perfectly like a designer dress should, but it’s timeless and classic. The capelet is pretty great.
Her hair is too careless, love the eye makeup, and a little more color on the lips would have worked.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  I knew it was out by the two names in the headline.  But I have to admit this is less Stella than most Stella.  I actually like the jacket/capelet thing.

I think with the fullness in the skirt, the waistline needed to be considerably lower, with the neckline considerably higher, and I probably would have really liked it.

  • I’m giving it a cautionary in. (small case).   Mostly this is fine, just a few little things here and there.

  • crash1212

IN. I think it’s the best she’s looked in a long time. I like it with or without the jacket and don’t mind the strap placement. I can’t believe I just voted a Stella IN. Guess there’s a first time for everything.

  • mmc2315

The dress strikes me as off balance.  The straps are either too thin and/or too far apart.  The neckline (if you want to call it that) is wrong.  The waist is somehow not exactly right.  The skirt is not slim enough or not full enough.

Make-up, hair, and shoes = great.

  • Out. The bottom part looks cheesy and cheap. The pleats are not good either.

  • I actually thought she looked good, not too harsh. The jacket makes it WERQ worthy but without she still looks better than average. IN!

  • jmorino08

I’m going to have to say OUT. Besides the straps and neckline, the way the skirt hits her and puffs out makes her look huge around the midsection and we all know she’s not… she’s made sure we know! With the jacket, it’s elegant and beautiful, which works on her and maybe she should thinking about rocking more often.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

Cam’s on my irrational hate list, and Stella’s dresses have an effect on my gag reflex, but I gotta give it up- she looks great! IN

  • Janet B

Thank goodness she showed me her pocket, I might have missed it!

A Stella McCartney that I like.  Although Cameron looks pretty, I really don’t like where the waist hit her.  Out

  • TLJezebel

That can’t be Stella McCartney.  I like it.

  • In_Stitches

With collar bones and shoulders like hers, she should draw attention to their full expanse.   She isn’t doing anything ridiculously special here, but the result is so damn fabulous.  Gotta give it to her: WERQ.

  • H3ff

This is the best I’ve seen Cammy look in YEARS. Her hair and makeup are gorgeous. She had been looking pretty harsh on recent outings.

  • StephanieLovesTLo

    She looks fantastic! In.

  • B_C_J

In – the simplicity of the look is very appealing. The pleating on the skirt gives it interest in large part due to the reflective quality of the skirt. The straps do not bother me but I do wish the skirt were placed a tad lower.  Overall, she looks elegant and well put together.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

IN, although her hair is eleven different shades of wrong.

  • IN. And with a Stella dress.  It’s history in the making, folks.

  • IN. She looks absolutely amazing. Picking on her straps is pretty petty compared to how easily you looked past the atrociousness that were Alan Cumming’s shoes.

  • RzYoung

IN with the jacket. OUT without it.

    • kimmeister

This, exactly.  I don’t mind what the straps are doing to her shoulders, but I do mind what’s going on in the bust.  They way they are pushed up makes them look completely fake (which they may be, I don’t know, but they don’t need to look that way.)

Her makeup looks fantastic though.  Hair is good too.

      • Kani G

Agree – OUT.  Any dress that makes boobs look that scary is an automatic no for me.  (And yes, I think they look very fake as well.)

  • Julie Fountain

I’m going to say IN, which surprises me because it’s Stella but Cameron looks really good here and she gets points for the jacket even if she took it off.

  • ojosazules

Definite linebacker outness. The bodice makes me kind of angry. So, I wasn’t surprised to find out that it was Stella. The cape is too clerical to be elegant, and more linebacker outness in the shoulders there, too.

  • Marcela86

IN, I like this, for me it’s an improvement.

  • they are off center

  • Anathema_Device

In addition to the straps issue, I don’t care for the trend of pleated skirts starting so high up on the bodice. You really lose the waist with those proportions. But I do think Diaz looks tons better than she usually does, so I’ll give her a tepid In.

P.S. That jacket is so amazing and she looks way better with it on, so that also helps tip it to the In column.

  • UptownNippy

The top is smooching her but she does look nicely bathed.

  • IN. I love the dress even though the boobs look kind of weird.

  • with the jacket… in
    without the jacket… out

  • In. This is definitely an improvement for her, and her hair and makeup look way more flattering than the last time I saw her on the RC.

  • kittenwithaquip

With the jacket I say in. Without the jacket I think it looks like a bathing suit with a dirndl skirt. From the side it looks like a maternity skirt. I’m kinda surprised I haven’t seen any “Cammy’s Baby Bump!” gossip.

  • ellabob

love the simple elegance of this look…

  • Diane_G

I say IN! I’d wear it, and her and I share the same swimmer’s body–tall, strong-shouldered and athletic. Although I do agree about the straps. First thing I noticed were her enviable arms, though, so maybe that’s what she was going for.

  • In. She looks lovely and classy, and she looks much less pinched and pained than usual.

  • twocee

Out.  I have more issues with the bottom half of the dress than the top.  That shape makes her look much bigger than she is, and no woman wants that.

But the top is horrible too.  Put them together and it kinda looks like she threw a shiny towel over her bathing suit.

  • Tatiana Luján

    I think she looks amazing!

  • Nice guns! Also, a mild in, although I don’t like the waist.

  • padma sallah

She looks really soft and elegant, wide straps and tuperware bowl boobs notwithstanding.  And the make-up and hair are fab. IN I say.

  • procrastinatrice

IN! I think she looks amazing. I don’t think this even needed to be an IN or OUT, but will play along:)

  • Jangle57

I was sort of on the fence about this until I realized it was a Stella McCartney dress and suddenly, for some inexplicable reason, I fell  on the side of OUT.  Not fair, but there you have it.

  • christinewithanx

Out. Maternity Meets Melons is what I’d call it. As my grandmother would have said, “Tch, but she’s such a *pretty* girl…”

  • FancyPhilly

In. I have an unreasonable dislike of her, but she looks very pretty. Prob helps her hair looks nicely done, her make-up looks good, etc.

  • LANDRU3000

I don’t think it’s supposed to be worn without the jacket/cape thing.  It looks that way anyway.

  • In!

  • Show off those new tatas, Cammie!

I like the jacket, too. But you have to admit girl looks radiant.

  • elemspbee

the dress is OUT. that silhouette looks awful on her.

  • bertkeeter

Only problem is that pouchy skirt…not fattering in front from side view! Looks best w jacket / cape.

  • StellaZafella

Simplicity pattern #4853 “Mom’s night out”.
Sorry, I try not to be biased but it’s Stella McC…it’s. just. out.

  • Candigirl1968

IN when the cape is on.  OUT when it’s just the dress – which has a lot of problems on top.

  • Out, and the waistline is all wrong on her too.

  • WittyCism

  • PeggyOC

Still an In, because that is a pretty good look.  But I agree, jacket on, and girls a little less prominent.

  • lesmaha

sigh–so close.  Love love love the jacket.  So–an IN for effort…?  ok.

  • mhleta

IN. Her broad and very fit shoulders balance the full volume of the skirt, which might look dumpy on anyone else. She looks classy.

  • Scarlet39

OUT.  The top half looks like one of those Spanx shaping and firming garments.

  • deltabronze

There’s an awful lot of real estate between her chin and that “neckline” — which draws attention away from her face. A necklace might have helped.

  • I’m not in love with the dress, but it’s not making me want to rip my eyeballs out, so a small victory for Stella. Still OUT, though.

  • nannypoo

I like it with the cape. Without the cape it is ridiculously unflattering. Awful boobs, bad fit in the waist  and yes the straps are all wrong. And once again I hate her hair.

  • Sara__B

What I don’t like are the high waist and the weird cleavage, but she still gets an IN from me for being elegant and glamorous. As foodycatAlicia wrote, all this look needs is “an inch up and in along the decolletage and an inch down on the waist”.

  • another_laura

Begrudgingly in.  Begrudgingly because I want to hate it, being Stella McC, but I can’t.

  • CarolinLA

Ugh.  I’m beginning the think that either Stella McCartney makes the shittiest looking clothes and/or she intentionally has a laugh every time a celeb wears her clothes.

  • filmcricket

A small out. I like the colours, and with the jacket it looks pretty elegant, but that skirt is making her look thick-waisted, and I don’t care for the bodice. Miss Cameron has one of the longest, most enviable waists in Hollywood, I don’t know why she’d want to do this to it.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

OUT – but barely since this may be a recent high for both Stella and Cameron.  But Cameron is a long-legged, long-waisted gal and the place the waistline on this dress sits is very unattractive.

  • marilyn

Out.  The dress is poorly designed (top has nothing to do with the bottom).  Also, it makes her look about 20 years older than she is.  And, it is just awkward looking, with the 2 fabrics used, that do not work together.  Cameron should not be this desperate.

  • tereliz

OUT for the pleated FUPA skirt. I have no quarrel with the straps.

  • Contralto

OUT.  Hate the hair.  The dress is completely unflattering.

  • IN. But only because she looks more elegant and ladylike than we’ve seen her look in a long while. Agree with the posters who aren’t fans of the waistline and the boob show; but taken as a whole, she looks pretty and classy.

  • With the jacket – win.
Without the jacket – dance recital. Out.

  • Joyce VG

WONKY boobs.  Unflattering skirt. Why is the skirt hitched up almost to her tortured boobs? Argh. OWWWWWT.

  • IN!  As a broad-shouldered girl, I can attest that it doesn’t matter: straps (wide-placed, closer together, even halters) or no straps, your shoulders will ALWAYS look broad.  It used to frustrate the hell out of me, but I’ve learned to embrace it, and I think Cameron looks fabulous here.  Strong, athletic, but yet also elegant.  Gorgeous makeup and hair.

  • Her left boob looks like it’s slowly sneaking out of her dress. Even her boob doesn’t like the dress. OUT

  • MilaXX

OUT. Sad really because it could be an In. Her arms are too built for such a delicate top. The hair is horrible and the bangle doesn’t work. If she put the jacket on, got rid of the bangle and fixed the hair it would be an IN for me.

  • First a hurricane, then a nor’easter, and now I am about to give an IN to a Stella McCartney look?

I’m starting to think the Mayans were right and the world will end on December 21. Nonetheless, IN.

  • Honestly I didn’t even noticed the shoulders, so I don’t think the straps are that bad. In.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

IN. I really love that cuff, and it is beautifully paired with this dress.

  • afabulous50

    Can I be undecided?

  • Imasewsure

IN for the dress itself but not on her… still not awful enough for an out. Would love the jacket with some sharp ladypants instead though

  • IN!

  • decormaven

Out. Don’t like the placement of the straps, where the waistline hits her, and the fact of how her bust looks in the bodice. “Two Tupperware bowls shoved into [the] dress,” indeed.

  • Introspective

in with a small i for me too. I think the dress does good things for her even with the very bad thing of creating the linebacker shoulders effect. and the cape is darling, really.

  • This might be the first time I’ve ever given an IN to anything by Stella McC, but I’m going to do it anyway.

When I looked at the photos I could tell something was “off” but I had no idea what.  Your explanation of strap placement was brilliant.  One of the things I love best about you, TLo, is that your comments are not only bitchy & fun, but also educational.  I learn so much about observing the subtleties of design from your comments and those of the other BKs.  Thank you all!!

  • demidaemon

The boobs are looking wonky to me, and that is distracting me from the rest of the look. So, OUT.

    • Tamara Hogan

I agree – there’s a titscrepancy, especially in the last photo.

  • butter nut

IN.  i dont love it.  but she needs to be encouraged to dress more age-appropriately.  so, brava, miss cammy.

  • erinbinek

With the jacket, yes.  Without it, heck no.

  • ChelseaNH

In.  Not bad enough to be out.  But the jacket is interesting — too bad she needed to flaunt the boobage.

  • IN. The details may not be perfect, but she looks elegant and well put-together. Also, she looks like she really likes the way she looks in it, and that makes a world of difference.

  • altalinda

out.  What you said, plus the skirt isn’t flattering.

  • siriuslover

Too high waisted. The jacket makes the look for sure. So, close (and closer than usual for Cameron) but no cigar. Out.

  • chelwi

IN. I think she looks good and I’m surprised to have found a Stella McCartney design I mostly like.

  • It’s pretty, but the poor thing must be freezing her bum off!

  • Bailey Debruynkops

IN BUT only with the jacket

  • IN. Grading on a curve. It’s the classiest she’s ever looked.

  • rab01

A begrudging “In”.  I wish the waist line were a little lower and agree with others who say the skirt is stuck in the middle of not form fitting and not full enough but I like the colors and the top on her.  Why wouldn’t she want to look slightly broader on top?  She has often looked too stick-thin skinny in the past.  While you can still see too much of her skeleton for my taste, looking a bit squarer shouldered makes her look, to me, healthier.

  • IN, jacket or no. She looks gorgeous.

  • GorgeousThings

OUT – to me, it’s the combination of the straps and the oddly placed waistline seam that makes her look rather stumpy and wide. And she looks like a Victoria’s Secret model – pained breasts.

  • Liz

I acknowledge all of the problems here, but maintain that Cammy looks more polished than ever before.

  • rainwood1

IN.  She looks lovely, and I don’t have any issue with the straps.  I love broad shoulders on a woman (including me).

  • MaryAtRealityTea

OUT. The proportions do not work for her. It’s too high waisted and she doesn’t have a defined waist, so that combined with the straps make it comes off looking blocky and maternity. I think if she ditched the empire waist it would be phenomenal. Especially WITH the jacket. Although I am digging the effect – and the classic elegance on her.

  • stellamaris73

I have some reservations over the fit of the bust (she’s got a bit of a baby-heads problem there). I don’t mind the strap placement at all. As a fellow broad-shouldered girl, I know how hard it is to find a silhouette that flatters and shows off my muscular arms. Cameron has gorgeously toned arms.

The overall look is classic yet modern. I like the outfit both with and without the cape. And she looks confident and happy.

  • BazoDee

  • PastryGoddess

I can’t believe this is coming out of my fingers, but this Stella McCartney dress does not suck, and the outfit as a whole is pretty damn chic.

As a broad shouldered lady myself, I totally understand where TLo is coming from.  The straps are way too widely spaced out and are giving her linebacker shoulders.

Still I’m going with capital letters here

  • formerlyAnon

OUT. With the jacket it’d be borderline WERQ territory. Without, well, when I see you in your fancy dress I should be able to think something besides how much I admire that you’re approaching amateur gymnast musculature but without the ropiness so many of your contemporaries seem to be unable to avoid. Just no, no, no.

  • Trisha26

Out. The skirt is terrible as well. And that jacket/cape thingy is awful.

  • ehn.  the waistline needs to be either lower or higher.  it hits her just at the bottom of her ribcage, making her look wider than she is.  never a good thing.

  • OUT.  Looks like a maternity outfit.

  • jw_ny

Aside from the wonky boobs and boob darts, and too much chest/cleavage showing, the rest is good, for the most part.  I usually dislike capes…that one looks good on her and with the outfit.  Elegant and chic.

  • frannyprof

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I’d give her an IN, especially with the capelet.  Very classy looking outfit.  I agree about the tupperware boobs issue, though.  All in all, an elegant outfit – who’d have thunk it from Stella McCartney??

  • Judy_J

Love it with the capelet.  Hate it minus the capelet.  I’m sure she paid lots of cash for the new girls, but if I were her, I’d be asking for a refund.  Aside from looking like two Tupperware bowls, the one on the left looks to be placed higher than the one on the right.

  • Definitely better with the jacket. But she had to ditch it to show off those killa guns. Best accessory ever.

  • I think she looks great. It’s not without it’s problems, but for once her hair looks really good. I agree that she should’ve kept the coat on, though.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I actually think she looks great! IN!

  • Mary_Shelley

OUT.  Too high-waisted and it makes her look a little pregnant.

  • Delaney Davis

In for me – I LOVE when broad-shouldered women embrace their shoulders. It always looks very elegant to me. Of course, I’ve always wished my own shoulders weren’t so narrow!

  • ThaliaMenninger

OUT. Too bare on top. It makes her look like she has implants. Or maybe she did have implants. But the lines aren’t good for her across the bodice.

  • Naked shoes alert!

  • granddelusion

The skirt also makes her look lumpy in the stomach and hips, which Diaz most assuredly is not. Out.

  • Lola67

In, I think she looks great, broad shoulders and all.

  • ChristinaRi

I hate, hate, hate the way it looks from the side.

Cameron is slim enough to wear a natural waistline and look great.

  • IN. I’d go so far as to say this is a PB for Cammy.

  • Zippypie

OUT.  She looks like she’s on steriods and it’s just because those straps make her look so wide.  She should have kept the jacket on and she would have gotten an IN.

  • Kirsten Henry

    in. for sure

  • unbornfawn

OUT. I don’t like the proportions, the fabric looks cheap and too much focus on the baby heads.

  • I found this unoffensive, simple, adequate.  So I guess I’ll give it a roll-my-eyes IN.

  • DylanCurtis

IN, because it’s better than usual.

  • eight_of_nine

I don’t see why emphasizing broad shoulders is considered a bad thing.  She looks strong!

  • in, b/c it’s a stella dress that i do not hate.

  • I kind of love this. Shocking, since I hate Cammie AND Stella. But this is really a beautiful, elegant look, with or without the jacket/cape.

  • teensmom99

  • plinkiedoodle

Out.  She certainly can do better than this mess.

  • TSkot

    She looks great: way IN

  • J MN

In, despite the ‘girls’ still having their bar code sticker.  They seem all fresh and new.

  • lalahartma

    I’m going to say in.

  • warnerave

she looks really good and put together..i even think it’s a WERQ..

  • neofashionista

IN Cdaz looks better to me than she has in a long long time the last 2 posts you have done on her

  • littlemac8

  • margaret meyers

    Not attractive at all. OUT!

  • The wide placement of the straps plus wide neckline plus the narrow skirt are working together to do some unfortunate things to her shape. OUT.

  • Samantha Irene

IN – she hasn’t been hitting the mark lately and this is so much closer… we must encourage her to keep to the path.

  • ccm800

    out. Yuck

  • With the jacket, it’s too mother of the bride.  Without the jacket, it’s too tacky cousin you were forced to invite to the wedding.  OUT.

  • Scott Isaacs

Ya know, she looks very California sun-kissed beach blonde, in the very best sense. Love the hair, love the whole dress (I’m not one of those precious unborn fawns who defaults to Stellaphobia), I’m okay with the shoes, and love the accessorizing. And hey…if Cammie wants to show off her Michelle Obama-worthy arms, broad shoulders and overall-very-toned physique, I say have at it! She looks awesome. In.

  • PeaceBang

    nice boob job?

  • amaranth16

Is anyone else a little reminded of Camilla Parker Bowles in the picture with the jacket?
