IN or OUT: Bèrènice Marlohe in Diane von Furstenberg

Posted on November 20, 2012

We ragged on Berenice for looking like she was trying too hard during her poledance for Skyfall, but we go back and forth on this look.

Bèrènice Marlohe attends the premiere of ‘Skyfall’ in Japan in a Diane von Furstenberg dress.

Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss

It’s got kind of an odd shape to it – at least in comparison to the average movie premiere gown – but that’s not necessarily a mark against it. We love the color of the skirt, but we’re not at all crazy about the color of the bodice, nor are we in love with the neckline. Her makeup is toned down (in comparison to past looks) but we hate her hair. And we’re not convinced all gold accessories were the way to go. We definitely don’t think the gold pumps are working. We hate to sound so ambivalent, since our stock-in-trade is being opinionated bitches. We guess it’s neither IN nor OUT. It’s an “Almost, girl. Almost.”

What say the Precious Unborn Fawns?

IN! It’s different! I like it!

OUT! It’s weird! I hate it!

Voting on Naomi Watts’ fabulous but impractical dress is still open, darlings. Express yourself.

I’ll give it an IN for a nice try. Love the color and shape of the skirt but the top was obviously made for a smaller-chested woman and her boobs look mad uncomfortable.

    • Rand Ortega

Can it be a burger? An IN & OUT? I like it but it’s weird but it’s different?

      • BrooklynBomber

I posted that exact same thing once!

        • Rand Ortega

Awesome! Great minds, BB! Great minds.

          • margaret meyers

I think we need to make “burger” a term of art on this forum, like bitter kittens and werq.

    • SapphoPoet

A lowercase “in” for effort. Love the shape and the color of the skirt, but the bodice makes me nervous. I keep expecting that little chain or whatever to pull apart.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

        Sounds good … “in”

      • Louise Bryan

I’m with this.  IN, but don’t take too deep a breath, girl.

    • Carly Warnock

I loved her acting in Skyfall but HATED her makeup. Her make up on the red carpet is atrocious as well, this is slightly better but still unflattering I think. Her chest looks squished.

      • H3ff

I couldn’t believe how little she was actually in the film, considering how much she is in the publicity. She literally has 10 minutes on screen.

    • belfebe

OUT.  Her makeup still looks too harsh, and I am not sure that the look as a whole looks so well put together.  Nice try though.  She is making progress.

    • Trisha26

Out. It is weird and looks like a casual resort dress (as on the model w/sandals) not a red carpet frock. It’s also not for someone with a bust – haven’t women learned yet that designers don’t dress anyone over a 32A?

    • S_Swift

It has Vegas pool party swimsuit cover-up vibes. Out.

    • http://www.facebook.com/brendan.foehr Brendan Foehr

In. It fits in all the right places, but is too high-waisted on her frame. Still works, though loss of points for execution.

    • Sue_Asponte

I would love it if there weren’t a big chunk of the front missing. The neckline is ridiculous. I love the colors and draping, but — yeah. Can’t even. The neckline is insane.

      • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

Agreed – I even like her hair & makeup.  Also love the skirt color.  but that bodice!  OUT

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/6PQUNH7VYANAXMRMEEM763V3EU victor liu

      OUT.
Her breasts are crying out. “SCREE! SCREE! WE CAN’T BREATHE! SCREE!”

    • Sara__B

OUT for the over-stuffed bodice. It looks like an explosion waiting to happen.

    • charlotte

Out. Her boobs are in pain.

    • NC_Meg

Out. With a few alterations (different length, change the boob thing so I am not in pain just looking at it), it could be an IN. The color of that skirt is to die for, though.

    • stagmania

I really love the color of the skirt, but I think it’s an OUT. The bodice doesn’t fit properly.

    • AlexisPayne

No, weird and not working. Out.

      • EveEve

OUT  None of it is working – the bodice, the bodice with the skirt, the hair, the makeup, the wtf clunky watch. And what’s up with those lips?  One of the few disappointing DVFs in a long time.

    • StellaZafella

It looks like 2 different dresses stitched together at the waist. It might have been better if it was all the same bright Baby Blue. The man watch bothers me here, but the gold might not seem so wrong of the colors of the gown didn’t fight for silver…or platinum.

    • antheapena

In for just making it in under the weird-wire

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Out. I like how different it is, but that isn’t her dress. I weep for her breasts. They look tortured!

    • kimmeister

OUT, just for the fit on the bodice.  Her cleavage appears to be like 3″ higher than where the boobs of the dress are.

On a sidenote, I just saw the movie over the weekend.  For all the poledancing, she was barely even in it.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

      OUT – brutality to boobs.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

Out. Get a dress that fits your boobs.

    • hughman

I wondered what happened to the Tie Clip.

    • TSkot

No no no.  Looks like a lame PR attempt:  OUT

    • benjamin478

i try editing in other accessories instead of the gold, but i think the gold was a pretty good way to go. its unifying, has enough contrast, and brings a little shininess to a movie premiere. i like this look a lot. IN.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H6FPGG4IMVA2AUSY6XXUZ3AMKY Miriam S

IN. The bodice is unusual and the color of the skirt is lovely. The shape of the dress is also unusual but it works. It looks like a tulip. Hair is meh but not horrible.

    • demidaemon

Not loving the hair or the bodice. I like the skirt. But my first reaction was “enh, I don’t like it,” so I guess it’s a borderline OUT.

    • BrooklynBomber

There’s something really not right about that dress. On the model it has a beachy vibe (still not right, but slightly better).  And, yeah, gold is so wrong with that SILVER metal…thing…and silvery bodice. I don’t know what would work (the model’s wearing red, white, & black sandals), but not gold. OUT

    • unbornfawn

OUT. That is one ugly dress. And what is that holding her tits together? A spring?

      • alyce1213

        tie clip.

    • l_c_ann

      out

    • decormaven

Is she wearing this watch as part of her contract? It has no reference to the outfit, so that is already an automatic OUT for me. The color of the skirt is pretty, but the bodice is oddly configured and it’s being pushed to maximum density. That’s not a hair style- not a RC hair style, anyway.

      • margaret meyers

That definitely looks like an “agreed to show the watch” pose.

    • http://chibirobot.blogspot.com/ Wendy Ann

I like it, the more I think about it.  It’s kind of beachy-fresh.

    • sunandmoon24

      Out.

    • Scarlet39

      IN

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

I looks like they tried to connect the boobs with a pencil or somehting! This dress only looks good on cup A models!

    • http://profiles.google.com/thehilariest The Hilariest

Cleveland looks utterly tortured.  And as interesting and different as the skirt is, I don’t feel like it goes with the top. Out.

    • Patricia Gillett

Weird and not in a cool, edgy way. More of a cheap, strange way. OUT.

    • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Here’s the thing: One can make an ample bodice work for a modest chest, but not the other way around. Also, the accessories are wrong. I don’t mind the hair so much since the dress is supposed to be somewhat beachy.

Overall, I have to go with OUT.

    • melanie0866

OUT.  Shape is weird and makes her hips look enormous.  That thing holding the bodice together looks like a breast piercing.  And the color of skirt is too summer for November.

    • jjfg

I would burn that dress for the bodice alone.  FAIL.  OUT.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

I think I will come down on the IN side of this. Accessories were a misstep, but somehow I think she is making it work in some way overall.

    • alyce1213

OUT. Horrible, ill-conceived, fugly colors and fabric.  She’s wearing a tie clip across her boobs, for chrissakes!

Can anyone explain why her lipstick extends about 1/2″ past her lip line?

This is really cheesy and cheap.

    • kittenwithaquip

Ouuuut. OUT. What I’m guessing is phenomenal rack is squished, her hips look disproportionately big (only because of the skirt), the makeup looks a little slapdash and her hair definitely looks slapdash. Surely there is room in the promotional tour budget to hire her a decent stylist, but this look is a little too DIY…in the back of the limo, using a compact and far too much eyebrow pencil.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Amen to hating the hair.  I love that skirt, but I don’t like the color on her.  I hate the pierced bodice, the color, shape, all of it.  The gold bangles are nice, the watch is out of place.  The earrings are mostly obscured by her terrible hair and I kinda like her make-up.  Yeesh.  Ok, I get it, neither “IN” nor “OUT” it’s just “MEH” to me.

Which come to think of it, that makes this a soft “out.”

    • littlemac8

OUT, really, who would look at themselves in the mirror and think “this looks lovely.”  I hate it and the gold accents are all wrong with these cool colors.  NO NO NO

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I’ll give her an IN for fabulousness. I just wish she wasn’t doing the peepee dance.

    • Nicholas

      OUT.

      Gorgeous-Woman-In-A-Shitty-Dress Syndrome (GWIASDS) strikes again.

    • marilyn

Out.  I realize she is on a promotional tour and needs something different to wear at every single stop.  Also, she needs clothes of a certain caliber.  This is something that is not worthy.  The designer must have been tired, and put an unmatched top and skirt together.  The bottom looks like a bed sheet, and the top looks like half of a cocktail dress.  She is gorgeous, the dress is not.

    • MissMariRose

I think the problem is the girl, not the dress. In her first scene in Skyfall, she wore a fantastic dress but she couldn’t deliver on the promise of that first sighting. These outfits wear her instead of the other way around.

    • MilaXX

OUT! I think this is Not Her Dress and I hate the hair and accessories. The color just doesn’t work for her. I’d like to see January Jones try this on.

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

I don’t know why I read the word “moustache” in there, but I did and now all I can do is picture a mustache on there that matched her heavy eyebrows.  If she was wearing a moustache, she’d be IN.

    • Rrroza

I like it a lot except for the ouchy-looking connecting hardwear. Unusual color combination! IN !

    • Eva_baby

OUT. The bottom part of the dress did not get the invitation that read ‘formal wear’ like the upper part of the dress did.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Out. But it’s not necessarily the dress. But while we are on the subject: the dress is too springy and resorty. It’s something to wear with sandals at a pool party; you can’t try to dress it up and wear it to a red carpet. Her hair is a mess. I am not going to grade her make-up on a curve – it’s too much. Period. End of story.

    • j_anson

Sigh. I really love the skirt and white belt element, but the more I look at the rest of it, the more the styling and bodice take it over from “bright and modern” to “tacky and cheap”. I think it’s more the fussiness of the bodice than its color. Anyway, OUT.

    • Jangle57

I love the skirt but that bodice just leaves me (and I suspect her) cold.  If she was less well endowed, perhaps but as it is, OUT

    • filmcricket

Out, for pretty much all the negative reasons you stated. This also looks a bit too beachy for an evening movie premiere – I was expecting to see “Resort Collection” in the credits. Love the shoes, but agree they do not work with the dress. However, Ms. Marlohe is to be congratulated on her genes, damn.

    • bertkeeter

She is stunning, exotic and sexy in a fresh way. That dres is hideous. Even me, a gay male, wants to snip that thing off between her boobs! Wrong!

    • lesmaha

out.whatever is going on with that bodice is just wrong. can’t get past it.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

It’s a walk of shame dress for all occasions. OUT.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/63F4DF4VDHSF2LPYOSWO5ZHAGU AdrienneD

Out.  That isn’t even yoga hair, that’s got into a catfight at Walmart hair.  Her boobs look squished, and I don’t like the watch as an accessory to this outfit.  Admittedly, I’ve never seen a post where Kasia Struss was the model where I thought the celeb looked anywhere near as good.

    • ThaliaMenninger

OUT. I hate the way her boobs look. That’s enough for me to say out.

    • DCSheehan

It’s an in. Love the blue. The bodice just works.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

IN – It does the job and it stands out. She looks comfortable and Red Carpet appropriate. Good for her.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Love the color, but that dress was not made for boobs. Out.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_N75LLUHGJEGCGJ3HZAXEB3MBJI Deen

Um… no, courtesy of the boob smashage. A dress should not remind one to schedule a mammogram.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

lipstick’s a mess.  looks like it was kissed into a smudgy smear.  oooh la la!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Elizabeth-Poytinger-Baumer/1516981341 Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

      her boobs look tortured.

    • Introspective

Top is doing wonky things to her bust. (maybe cause its made for an a cup kinda girl which berenice isnt). Bottom is a horrid color with a ghastly shape and a damning hem that hits at a point that can make even the longest of legs look stumpy.

      Its over. Shes OUT.

    • teensmom99

OUT.  To me it looks like Malibu beach party in the 70s–maybe a great dress for Dyan Cannon . . .

    • Monabel

      Nah.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I’ll say in. She looks pretty. Her hair is so BORING but at least the Alice Cooper makeup is gone. Love the skirt.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I like the skirt for the shape and color, but I am not liking that bodice. Out.

    • Contralto

She’s delicious.  I love the skirt.  The top is hideous and what is that holding it together, a tie bar?  Yeesh.  Don’t like the watch with the outfit, either.  Lowercase in.

    • quiltrx

OUT.  Given ten guesses, I actually would not have guessed this was DVF.  It’s just awkward.

And I bet her tits had marks on them for two days after.

    • lalahartma

yeah the boobage looks kinda odd, but I say – in!

    • http://www.facebook.com/sara.m.hottman Sara Hottman

IN for the almost. It’s squishing her boobs a-symmetrically, but I like that she tried to fall it up with the pumps, though missed the mark on the bangles. But she really needs to make sure the ladies are symmetrical for the cameras.

    • Call me Bee

Agreed taht the skirt is lovely, but the bodice is plain weird.  But–she looks relxed and pretty, so just a baby “in”.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Maybe coral colored accessories would have made this?
(The model is wearing coral colored sandals, and it looks great there…)

    • PastryGoddess

She needed to go up a size so her boobs weren’t squashed, then ixnay the gold accessories.  The hair is tragic

    • ChelseaNH

The bodice looks chip in a chip way.

    • frannyprof

Out. The weird bust jewelry is making my eyes twitch.

    • boweryboy

Two snaps down and a neck roll fugly OUT.

    • sleepycat

OUT, she is just too big for that dress to look right

    • mila_8

      In! Love the color

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I hate the dress. There. I’ve said it. Hate. Definitely out.

    • harleydear

I like the dress, but it reads very casual, like it’s made of jersey. Out. But with regrets.

    • AnneElliot

      Out.  Her boobs look tortured.

However, I do love the color of the skirt.  This dress just wasn’t made for anyone with an actual chest.

    • Fillettemignonne

Mildly irrelevant, but the accents on the first two “e’s” of her name should be aigu–in other words, pointing up in the other direction.

    • curiouserandcuriousest

OUT. Not only does the bodice do all kinds of unkind things to her breasts, I think the shape on a whole makes her look a little pear-shaped, which she most decidedly is not. I love the colours, and with the right fit it might have been quite lovely.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

OUCH, that boob bar looks damned uncomfortable.  I also hate it when women wear watches as jewelry at a formal event.  Granted, many of them are as expensive as good jewelry, but still, I just think it’s inappropriate.  Is she the one who actually needs to keep track of the time at this premiere?

Other than those cavils (and I’ll take your word on the shoes, TLo, because I can’t really see them) this look has more good than bad, so I’m going with IN.

    • ankali

OUT. I like the bodice (which is crazy sexy on her, wow), and I like the skirt, but I don’t like them together. I get a Frankendress vibe from this, but on the horizontal instead of the vertical.

    • briecee

These are parts of two different dresses.  Either might have been interesting.  Together, they’re an OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/iraki86 IraKi

I hate what the neckline is doing to her boobs. It’s animal cruelty! Those puppies need to breathe! Also, I hate both the proportions and the colour of the accessories. She does not look bad per say. Rather, she seems … not quite good. OUT

    • Mike Owens

Out, although I agree about the skirt. Two-thumbs up. There something odd about the bodice. It’s as though she needed something to keep it all together and her bust from tumbling out. The effect is not the same on the runway model, so perhaps it’s a look best kept to the wafer-thin gal.

    • Melvis Velour

Totally OUT!  It looks like a mish mash of stuff that was lying around the work room and was slapped together…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Harris/1358701372 Linda Harris

      out

    • Cathy S

I love the skirt part, but I hate everything else. So out, I’m afraid.

    • Warrior89

It’s different AND I hate it.  OUT.

    • JimMcC

IN. That metal thing holding the top together looks pretty tacky, but I love enough of the rest of it to give a solid positive rating.

    • Judy_S

IN, the defects of the outfit being compensated by her smile.

    • TheLaurenJean

In! It looks different, and I like it. So sick of the same cookie cutter outfits. So, IN, a THOUSAND TIMES IN! It’s giving me life!

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

This one I can get behind, even with the falling-down hair. I love the color combo, even the top. IN.

    • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

OUT. I hate the neckline. Horrible. Works much better on the model so maybe it’s just someone else’s dress…but I can’t imagine I’d ever actually like it because…neckline.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

OUT. The shape is wonky for her figure.

    • Judy_J

Out, for the fit in the bust alone.  I’m having sympathy pains just looking at her poor squashed breasts.  That reminds me, it’s time to schedule my mammogram.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

Girl, this is not your bodice? Either in color or in fit.

    • MoreShoes

Can we just give her an OUT and be over with that?

    • kolokOlchik

It’s totally an IN for me.  I think she looks great, from the beautiful blue to the messy hair.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joy.yeager Joy Yeager

      Out

    • RebeccaKW

Out.  I want to like it, but…no.  The skirt makes her look pear-shaped and while there is nothing wrong with being pear-shaped, why would someone who is not want the illusion of it?  The bodice is weird and I’m crying for her boobs.  The accessories don’t go.  The hair and makeup seem a bit DIY, and while it would be fine for woman on the street, this is a red carpet moment.  Come on, girl, you are gorgeous, don’t try to so hard (but try a little harder on the hair/makeup).

    • Janet B

      OUT

The bodice is the wrong color for her and it doesn’t fit.  The gold accessories were a poor choice.

    • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

IN. I like that it’s different and her makeup is more flattering. It’s not my favorite, but it’s better.

    • deathandthestrawberry

I actually like the top, but the blue skirt, while a striking color, doesn’t work for me. I hate the shape of it, and color really doesn’t match the rest of the look. But she looks pretty and she is kind of selling it. Okay, twist my arm: In.

    • jw_ny

      IN

The skirt is the only part of the look that I really like…well, her nail polish too.  Her eye makeup is a bit severe.  Her lipstick looks messy.  Her hair is a disaster.  Her boobs look squished.  I hate the gold shoes and accessories.  So…why IN?  Because overall she looks pretty, she’s poised and selling it, and it all somehow comes together..albeit a bit on the tacky side. Oh yeah…and I love her eyebrows.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

OUT. Still hate the hair, still hate the make-up. It’s so strangely unflattering on her.

    • AmeliaEve

I get that Omega is the sponsor, but that watch is way to big and sporty for this look.

    • Aly Light

I think she looks like pure sex. I give her an IN for that.

    • the_valkyrie

Out. That dress needs small boobs.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KBNJ6GJTXYEE6BON3WGK6KEGT4 Elizabeth

OUT. The bodice and waist of this dress are doing weird things to her. It looks cute on the model; maybe it’s just not a curvy gals dress? She is a lovely woman, but she has yet to really get it right on the RC. Needs a new stylist or some kindly gays in her life. She’s a striking woman (those eyebrows!) so it’s a shame she’s not hitting it closer to the mark.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

IN.  the color of the bodice is growing on me , as i’m seeing it as a pale lavendar rather than the grey i saw initially.  agreed that the gold pumps are a no-go.  maybe gunmetal or pewter delicate sandals.

    • chitowndg

In, great look for a Bond Girl.

    • sweet_potato

It’s weird but it’s also pretty and interesting in a good way.  IN.

    • margaret meyers

Spring-loaded boobs are always out.  Love the skirt’s color and shape.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1594250515 Kim Brightman

OUT  Great dress for dinner at a beachy resort, NOT a red carpet in the Fall.

    • kaycem

      OUT for … i don’t know, everything.

eta: after looking at the “trying too hard” outfits, it seems as if we have a lady star who just doesn’t wear clothes well. i hope — like jennifer lawrence finding sportswear — she finds a look that works and sticks with it.

    • mike__tv

      OUT.

    • formerlyAnon

Out. Too odd, and her hair, accessories, etc. aren’t helping.

    • librarygrrl64

It’s an interesting gown, and the shape is good for her, but the bodice is pulling, and I was also hating on the gold AND on the hair. I guess that’s an out, but a mild one.

    • Dagney

I am saying in.  Only because she is such a stunner and I suspect she is working with some “B” team stylists that let her step out the door looking scraggly and weird.  I mean, is there a tailor nearby?  The mere act of tailoring that bodice to FIT her, (boob smash?) and brushing her hair just a tiny bit neater, and she would knock it out of the ballpark.

    • http://twitter.com/GQueen GQueen

I’m going to say out, even though I love the skirt– I cannot unsee how horrible that neckline is and what it is doing to her bosoms.

    • NCDFan

Out. I hate dresses that look like they hurt.

I love the tulip-shape of the skirt and its color, but the whole outfit looks more spring to me, so it doesn’t look right seasonally for now. The top looks like an afterthought. It’s like the designer started with the skirt, and then went with the where’s-the-one-place-I-can-show-skin-after-covering-up-her-legs-so-much rule. The top brings tacky to an outfit that could have been a bucket full of pretty. Plus, the top’s color is too muted to either contrast or complement that skirt.

OUT just for the fit. Much better on the model and Ms B is just as young and gorgeous

Out, just for torturing her poor little boobs.

Silver would have worked better than gold. I think she still has too much makeup on, and the top is too small for her chesticles.
