IN or OUT: Ashley Madekwe in Camilla and Marc

Posted on November 07, 2012

This look is kind of adorable, but the more we look at it, the more we think it’s because Ashley’s adorable.

‘Revenge’ star Ashley Madekwe attends the Emirates marquee at the Melbourne Cup, held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, in a Camilla and Marc dress paired with a Karine Sultan cuff and Tacori earrings.

Camilla and Marc Fall 2012 Collection

Tacori White Gold .66ct Diamond Stud Earrings

Karine Sultan Matte Gold Cuff

It’s the shape that’s killing us here. Ashley’s a teeny-tiny little thing so she can get away with additional volume in her clothes, but we’re not loving that skirt at all – and we don’t think the minty green is very flattering.  The top’s so flimsy-looking; like it was made out of a dishtowel or something. We like most of her accessories, but we’re not loving all of them paired together. The shoes are cute, but we don’t love the ankle bows. The cuff is gorgeous, but it doesn’t feel like it goes with the rest of the look. And while the hair jewelry is kind of fab, it feels like it belongs with a more formal look. It’s weird. We can’t say we hate the look, but it’s just not coming together for us.

IN! Well, it works for me! Adorable!

OUT! Too precious by half.

Julie Bowen’s comfy-fab purple sequined caftan got itself voted IN by the Bitter Kittens.

In. The overall effect is adorable, so I’m happy.

  • 1st thought…. Leanne Marshall…. but heavier and petal-less

    • Meg0GayGuys6

That’s exactly what I thought!  I rarely read who the designer is, but this time I did to see if it was a Leanne skirt.  I vote IN as well

  • OUT – There is no excuse for wearing an apron on the red carpet.

  • mjude

  • In. She’s cute and looks happy to be in it.

  • j_anson

I didn’t hate it on sight, but your arguments are convincing. OUT.

  • Judy_J

Ashley’s outfit is not working for me.  I’m more interested in the lady in the red hat standing behind Ashley.

    • Emirates uniform with the I Dream of Jeannie hat and attached scarf.

    • H3ff

I assume she is an Emirates air stewardess.

    • DeborahJozayt

I like the gal with the peach/coral dress to the left.

    • annrr

that is the first thing I thought too!

  • G

I like the shoes – and her smile!

  • teensmom99

Not an out so IN.  Not the best, but have already referenced having spent time at a mall yesterday with 2 teens. I feel like if I didn’t see this dress, I saw dresses like this (and some on the $7 rack at H&M). Dress is not offensive–that and her general cuteness and the nice accessories keep it from being a fail.

  • 3boysful

She’s button-cute, but the outfit is meh, and the accessories are nice individually, but don’t work together.  Out.

    • same goes.  Close but no cigar.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Yep, that’s an out for me too.  Agree that she’s adorable, but the skirt is just wrong, and the top is cheap looking.  I like the shoes, they’re cute, except the bows.

  • I can’t sign off with those silly shoe bows and the weird shape. OUT.

  • In. She’s making it work!

  • Why is she wearing the bath mat?

  • in. is it perfect? no. but she looks cute and i do like the color of the skirt on her.

  • Sorry, For me its an Out.  That skirt looks like 4 dishtowels.

  • altalinda

  • decormaven

There are a lot of interesting design elements here, but they don’t add up to a win, in my book. Great attitude, though!

  • TieDye64

The more I looked at it the less I liked it. A dish towel and a bulky skirt do not make for a chic look. OUT.

  • eh, in.  plus it’s springtime in melbourne, so i think the colors and geegaws work.

  • Project Runway kitchen materials challenge runner-up.  Out.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Lol, I thought the same thing!

  • granddelusion

She is cute, but that pull up in the front ruins the dress.

  • Monabel

The woman looks lovely, her outfit looks a mess. OUT

  • Judy_S

I’ll give her an IN. She looks better than the model, which is always a plus. The hair jewelry is too much but I’m feeling nice today.

  • I say IN. Really the only thing I don’t like about it is the strappy shoes paired with all that fabric. If you’ve got the teeny-tininess to pull it off, work it. Def prefer the white top to the black.

  • kimmeister

Out.  The only thing I like is her hairdo and its doodad.  The top of the dress might be forgivable if it weren’t for the ugly blob attached to its bottom.

  • She looks like she’s swimming in her clothes, OUT.

  • thecitysleeps

I’m gonna go with IN.  The whole thing manages to make a ‘look’ I like.  It’s very cute!

  • Jangle57

Looks like she has her skirt tucked into her pantyhose except of course she’s not wearing pantyhose.  Still looks like that though so OUT

  • MilaXX

IN – I agree with everything you said, but the overall effect is cute. I think this is the best her hair and face have ever looked.

  • homofascist

IN.  The cuff is a bit of overkill, but otherwise I think it is super cute.  Love the shoes with the outfit!

  • In. She looks adorable.

  • Contralto

She is absolutely adorable.  Hair and makeup marvelous.  Cute shoes.  Nice earrings.  However, the cuff goes with something else.

The dress is an abomination unto the Lord.

  • f_yeah_marie

She may be cute, but her outfit isn’t

  • I think it looks cute. IN!

  • Sara__B

That skirt’s not too precious, it’s too big and sloppy-looking. OUT.

  • Joyce VG

Oh my goodness OUT.  She’s adorbs but no.

  • VioletFem

IN. The overall look is pretty cute.

  • Judy P

I have no opinion on whether this is in or out, though I’m leaning toward in. But someone please deliver those earrings to my office STAT.

    • littlemac8

I think they’d look better on me!!!  Aren’t they great!

  • In. Like you guys said, I’m not sure if I like this simply because it’s cute or because Ashley is so cute. But it suits her, and hey, I do like those shoes. I can never fault a ladystar for trying to add interest to her look with her shoes.

  • Interesting that you think the top looks like dish towels — I was just thinking the skirt fabric reminds me of the same thing!

  • in

  • Out. The skirt looks like it’s made from curtains that come with a fully furnished bedsit. And the top is from the table cloth from said bedsit.

  • gabbilevy

Mild in. She makes a great first impression that falls apart in the details, but the former outweighs the latter, I think.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

Top half: Gunnar + Kooan on third challenge.
Bottom half: Peaches on first All-Stars challenge.

  • I can’t. Everything above the neck is so beautiful but that’s not a dress for the races and it does nothing to flatter her.

  • She’s too cute to out.  IN: Based on extreme adorableness.

  • Dust ruffle skirt, pillowcase top. Did Project Runway go to Bed, Bath and Beyond?

  • OUT. That skirt is so awful, imagine what we mortals would look like in it? She’s cute as a button, but this outfit is fug.

  • Out. She is cute, the look just doesn’t work. I agree with TLo on all points.

  • Janet B

Those earrings are beautiful, that dress is not.

  • lalahartma

    Out, too blousy/flouncey.

  • IN. She is adorable and she wears adorable clothes. If I were she, though, I would have declined to hoist the Cup if it meant I had to wear Micky Mouse gloves.

  • kaycem

OUT because i just really don’t like her.

  • B_C_J

Interesting outfit. I see the basis for some of the criticism however I will go with my first impression which was that this delicate wisp of a lady is wearing a beautiful, flower petal outfit.  The accessories do not all work with it but overall it is an IN.

  • stagmania

OUT. Just a big old blah.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. She’s cute, but that dress is hideous and cheap looking.

  • Sydcat

In – it is a totally Melbourne Cup appropriate outfit. Quite a lot of skin because it’s warm but still as ladylike as possible. Makes a nice change from all the bodycon dresses the Australian celebrities were wearing. The hair jewellery is compensation for lack of a hat… It’s the races and hats are de rigueur at the Cup.

  • Candigirl1968

OUT, because this looks like a summer dress (if it was June, it would be an IN).

  • Trisha26

Out (and it’s not precious, it’s a mess.)

  • AuntJentie

  • Snailstsichr

Out. she is really cute, but it looks like her skirt got stuck in her panties.

  • ojosazules

Everything you say is true. Out.

  • another_laura

Out.  That skirt is a crime.

  • Donna Schmidt

  • Out, she’s cute but the dress is bad.

  • hate the skirt. OUT

  • LeifBallard

Not the biggest fan of this….might be b/c I don’t like her character on Revenge this season! haha

  • oohsparkley!

    In. Works for me.

  • l_c_ann

Top is third project in Freshman home ec (after a linen towel and a pillowcase).

  • DylanCurtis

    Hmmmm. Out.

  • jw_ny

I dislike the top a lot…ok with the skirt.   The rest of the outfit is a hodgepodge of okay things that don’t necessarily go/work well together…namely the jewelery.

  • kschwarting

Out for all the reasons you mentioned, particularly the napkin skirt.  She does look adorable though.  If only they’d give her something really interesting to do on “Revenge”–still waiting to find out that she is more calculating than she appears.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

Hate the top, but really like the bottom. And her cuff. And there’s something to be said for her natural cuteness. IN.

  • Cute. In.

  • IN! Darling dress and great sandals!

  • in

  • quiltrx

OUT.  It’s not even precious–SHE is precious!  The top looks like a bib, and the skirt is a shapeless mess.  But she is cute as pie.

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  That skirt is just not right.  Doesn’t look good on the model, either.  But she is awfully cute.

  • TSkot

The whole thing looks like it was made out of a dish towel:  OUT.

  • My thought was that the skirt was made from those chamois towels people buy to wash and dry their cars.  It seems oddly stiff and chunky.  So even though she’s a cute little waif, and even though it looks better with a white bodice than with a black one, the look earns an OUT from me.

  • demidaemon

She’s cute. The skirt is not, yet desperately wants to be. Despite her cuteness, this is about the outfit, so OUT.

  • RzYoung

    Super cute! IN

  • trisker

    OUT — too much randomness

  • IN. She looks cute, no complaints.

  • Verascity

OUT. Cute girl in a terrible dress.

  • OUT. Its too big on her, and completely shapeless. Even the smaller girls need definition!

  • WittyCism

Out.  C’mon, BK, we all would’ve torn this to shreds if this were on Project Runway.

  • snarkykitten

the whole thing looks like it was made of old dish towels. no thank you

  • IN, this girl can WERQ

  • littlemac8

Top looks like a home-ec project I sewed in junior high school.  And I got a D…….OUT!!!

  • harleydear

    Cute. In.

  • margaret meyers

It’s alright, if you like randomly lumpy clothing.
