IN or OUT: Ashley Greene in Donna Karan Atelier

Posted on November 16, 2012

We’re not super-crazy about bodices that look more like underwear, but something about this really appeals to us:

Ashley Greene attends the screening of ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2’ in New York City in a Donna Karan Atelier navy corset gown.

It helps that it’s a deep, rich blue that suits her and doesn’t remind one of foundation garments. It also helps that there’s some interesting and eye-catching construction to it. We don’t know what’s going on here, but we think we’d normally not like a skirt that looks like it’s tacked on, but for some reason, that’s working for us too. Basically, it’s a more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts dress and it helps that she’s working it. Hair and makeup are stunning; the jewelry is gorgeous and the clutch is tasteful. This is an unreserved IN for us, bordering on a WERQ. The only reason it’s not the latter is because we’re genuinely interested in what y’all think. It’s an unusual and eye-catching dress, and to us, that alone is worthy of some praise.

IN! Eleganza!

OUT! Underwear!

The Minions with Opinions were almost unanimous in their dislike for Allison Williams’ too-complicated-for-its-own-good dress, voting it OUT.

The sash of black fabric across her midriff is really distracting.  It’s like a seatbelt.  OUT, with or without the distraction.

  • She looks stunning!!! IN.

  • I’m kind of dead-center between in and out. I love the color, hair and makeup. I hate the way the skirt attaches, I hate the bullet breasts, and I hate the weird waistband out of nowhere.

    • RebeccaKW

Same here, in and out.  Loving the color.  Love the hair/makeup.  But those cups and that space between…I have to go with Out.  Maybe without the keyhole that IMO makes it look like lingerie and the ruffled cups I might go for In, but not as is.

      • Judih1

me too – out for the same reasons despite the grat hair, make up and accessories

    • mshesterp

With you all the way, and that makes it an OUT for me as well.  The bra cups looks like they’re not attached to her body, like her boobs are weirdly floating.  And the drape-y skirt is odd.  She’s so beautiful and the color is phenomenal, but this is just a weirdly constructed look for me.

    • LaylaSV

Exactly!  OUT, it’s like she just got out of bed and took the sheet with her.

    • Kristin McNamara

“Bullet breasts” is a pretty good characterization…. I was thinking more, “Let’s make sure everyone can find them oka–HERE THEY ARE.”

  • OUT – Makeup and hair are flawless, I love it all, except the dress. Sorry, thumbs down.

  • altalinda

It’s hard to assess the skirt (black skirt against black backdrop), but from what I can see, in.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

the simplicity of the skirt makes the top work. karan really knows how to flatter a woman’s body. and that color is really lovely on her.

  • minnye

I like some lingerie bodices and love the boning & belt here, but not the cups. Color is magnifico! The skirt, though, looks like she wrapped the sheet around her.

IN – overall it’s pretty hot.

    • I agree.  This could totally be a WERQ if those cups and the keyhole in between them were not there.  She looks great in that blue and I like the IDEA of this dress.  IN

  • Nicholas

I think she and Allison Williams get away with the craziest clothes, because they’re so distractingly gorgeous that people mistakenly think the dresses work.

    • Sobaika

Yup. She looks good, the dress does not.

    • lonedroid

This. It also applies to how Ashley’s hair stylist Ted Gibson gets ridiculous attention for the most basic of hairstyles he creates for her just because her hair is gorgeous. Same with most of her makeup. It’s always something that’s aging her and/or making her look more gaunt than she already is (seriously, look up some of her candid pics, she looks so young!), but people always think her makeup  looks neat because she has flawless skin. Anyways, this is definitely out for me too.

  • Sara__B

You’re right that there’s interesting and eye-catching construction going on, but it looks like a bra with suction cups. OUT.

    • Nicholas

They look like repurposed shoulder pads to me.

    • YES they are exactly suction cups. Out.

  • itsnotoveryet11

if it didn’t have the tiny flash of skin in the middle between the bra top and the rest of the bodice I would love it. I even covered that bit with my finger to test but that little annoyance is making it an OUT for me

    • elleg929

      Completely agree!!

      • CPK1

exactly! that is what is ruining it for me. All I can see are echoes of Madonna’s cone bra. A shame, because everything else is gorgeous

      • mhleta

Agreed. The harder I look at this the less I love.

  • Tatiana Luján

Even as underwear, that bodice is very ugly. I love the color, the clutch, the hair and makeup, but her boobs look like space coconuts.

  • MilaXX

It’s unusual, but I like it. I especially love her blue smokey eye. IN

  • janeyq

She’s wearing a towel and a corset.  OUT

  • I think she looks so lovely. Love it all. Such a great color on her. IN.

  • Janet B

    Absolutely gorgeous!

  • kaleisforlovers

It looks like she pinned the skirt on before she left the house to fool us all into thinking she was wearing a gown, and not just beautiful underwear. A definite OUT if you ask me.

Love the hair and makeup though.

  • DylanCurtis

I HATE the way the skirt attaches. And while her makeup looks great on its own, I don’t like that it matches. She looks great despite it all but the skirt part makes it an Out for me.

  • Really pretty and eye-catching – IN, with some quibbles.

  • StellaZafella

First impression: Return of the Fly…it makes her boobs look like bug eyes to me.

  • G

Plain and simple – what this dress is not – OUT.

  • Pants_are_a_must

It’s…not particularly flattering on her. The corset plus the cinching belt plus the draping create the illusion that she has no curves, which I’m sure is not the reality. It’s a great color for her, but…no. I’d be more vehement, but I honestly don’t find her that interesting, so I’ll just say OUT on account of shoddy fitting.

  • Violina23

I feel like I should hate this, but I don’t. I give it an IN

  • poggi

You guys are so right about the blue. She looks great in it, and the color photographs so beautifully, much richer and deeper than black. It’s an IN for me, but the boob bridge/cleavage chasm looks awkward enough to me to take it out of WERQ territory.

  • Most of the time, corsets are not a friend to the “girls,” insofar as they generally do not seem capable of containing and/or supporting them.  This is clearly an exception to this rule, and just demonstrates the necessity of good fit.  She is stunning.

  • Normally, corsets do little to make the “girls” look good, being largely incapable of containing or supporting them. This is a clear example of how important fit is.  She doesn’t need to worry if she’s one sneeze away from a wardrobe malfunction.  She is absolutely stunning.

  • she looks great, but I do hate the dress. out.

  • ringthing

IN! I think this girl is really breathtaking to look at, and she’s not made many fashion mistakes that I’m aware of. This is a stunning look for her.

  •  Oops, sorry for the double post!

  • OUT – but if she managed to keep the drapyness of the skirt and lose the waist-belt, it’d probably be an in, because I love the colour and the basic shape and her makeup.

  • mhleta

This look would be a disaster in any other color and I mean any. This gorgeous shade elevates it considerably. And she looks gasp-worthy gorgeous. Having said that, the skirt is kinda buggin’ me for the same reason it’s bugging everyone else. I’m not sure what else would have worked any better, though. The skirt would have either had to come to the waist band or…? If it were a drop waist it might give her a pooch, and not the kind that says “woof.”

  • For me it is IN

  • Kelly Maloney

  • rloliveira

I’m not loving the skirt. I would have preferred that it  was attached to the bodice in a different more figure-flattering way.

  • karena10

Hair, make-up etc are great, but the bodice is just too strange.  If the bodice were the same color as the skirt, it would be in, but as it is, it clashes.  OUT.

  • Everything is working except that skirt. Sorry, I think that “tacked on” describes it. But that is a minor quibble when all else is so elegant. I vote “In.”

  • crash1212

IN. Because I like the idea of Miss Kitty throwing a towel over her merry widow. Also, love that ring.

  • Joyce VG

    IN!!! Oh so IN.  Gorgeous!

  • Haley Buchanan

In.  The color is beautiful on her, the architectural details of the bodice are interesting, and her hair and makeup are flawless.

  • almondemy

You guys grade her on a curve.  The hair makes her ears look huge, the raccoon eye makeup does nothing for her, and the skirt is overcomplicated while the bustier is ugly. Big ole OUT, fellas.

  • Allison Woods

I love the color and the bodice, but the skirt’s a mess. Out.

  • stagmania

IN. It really is a beautiful color, and despite hating a lot of the elements separately, I think she’s making it work.

  • am I the only one who thinks she is like a demure Coco Rocha?

  • She looks STUNNING.

    I repeat, STUNNING.

  • I think it looks like she threw a sheet around her waist after she got off her shift being as a Playboy Bunny waitress. OUT.

  • IN

  • Mmmm…. OUT. The color is indeed stunning, and I even like the corset-stay effect of the mid-section, but the bra-treatment looks really, really cheap compared to everything else. [It also looks like a pair of glasses perched on her chest – or is that just me?] If I were going by percentages I suppose it’d be an “in”, as I like about 90% of the look, but that bra-thing is just too distracting and silly for my taste.

  • NCDFan

Out. Really it’s underwear with a sheet across the bottom.

  • lilibetp

    IN.  Love.

  • Scott Isaacs

21st century HOT Bond girl realness. In toto. She could not possibly be WERQing it any more.

    IN IN IN.

  • l_c_ann

But it won’t be if I look at it too long.

  • IN.  I like it, and I even love the hint of peep show curtain in her skirt.

  • OUT. I see underwear with a skirt tacked on + can’t unsee…

  • Lilak

Dress OUT.  When you have to add a sort of belt for no other reason than to keep the skirt from looking like a curtain you grabbed when the cops busted in, well . . . .

Otherwise:  flawless makeup, nice shiny hair, and I wouldn’t mind owning the earrings.

  • ojosazules

    Taken all together an In.

  • up with pod people

I love it, to be honest, and I am sick to death of strapless, so that’s saying something. It’s the perfect fit and the interesting construction, and the way they draped the skirt so it wasn’t just a hard line or a played-out basque.

  • IN – she looks lovely and the dress is interesting

  • Imasewsure

I say WERQ because it highlights how jaw-droppingly beautiful she is…. I can’t even fathom how anyone would see this as an out but luckily the world is full of differing opinions.

  • j_anson

Oh, IN. That color is amazing on her.

  • decormaven

In for the beautiful shade of blue, attractive make-up, and thoughtful use of accessories. Out for the awkward draping/attachment of skirt to bodice.

  • I don’t like the make-up but the dress is clearly IN

  • MzzPants

She looks sleek and pulled together.  IN.

  • f_yeah_marie

Out, but I agree about the color suiting her.

  • IN! I think she’s rocking this dress.

  • filmcricket

Out. Her face does look amazing, and the jewelry’s great, and I would really like this if it were lingerie, but it’s not working for me as a dress.

  • another_laura

Out.  Too like underwear.  Sorry, guys, I’m not with you on it.

  • kolokOlchik

    absolutely IN

  • TieDye64

She’s making it work. I think this is a very striking look for her. IN.

  • teensmom99

IN–the bodice keeps it from being a WERQ–but she looks fantastic so IN.  And would be better if the top fit better.

  • leave_Blake_alone

IN. I agree the on paper I wouldn’t like this dress, but here it’s all working like gangbusters. The perfect hair/makeup/accessories help.

  • Genevieve LeFluer

OUT. It looks like she’s put her skirt on and is waiting to for the blouse.

  • Lily-Rygh

OUT.  The space between the cups and the look of a belted corset is totally Madonna 1992, and the way that skirt attaches all askew is shameful.  The color is great on her and I actually love her eye makeup, but it’s nowhere near enough to compensate for this weir-ass skirt.

  • What a flawless face.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Out. I tried. I can’t. Color is divine, though.

  • sweetestsith

I realize this is a corset (that was not made for her, or possibly any humans, body) with a pretty towel thrown over it, but she still looks so freaking fabulous. IN for making a dress like that work, and look hot.

    Beautiful hair & makeup too.

  • In, it’s gorgeous.

  • BobStPaul

It should not have worked but somehow it does – or close enough to rate an in.  She looks absolutely stunning.

  • Peri7473

the drape of the skirt, plus the waist band are “almost but not quite” for me.  Sorry, it’s an OUT

  • i actually really really like this. in!

  • Trisha26

Out – I like everything but the skirt – it looks like it’s just hanging there, like a seam came undone. Distracting.

  • Cheesely

LOVE!! IN!! She looks amazing. As we have been watching her for a few years now throughout the twi-saga, she has really “grown into herself” I know we’re not supposed to comment on how the stars themselves look, but I must say, they should have cast her as Rosalie, the supposed “most beautiful girl anyone has ever seen”

  • This would probably look tacky as hell on anybody else, but she’s making it work.  I’m giving her a WERQ.

  • Jangle57

I think I would be ok with it without that keyhole opening; the color is lovely on her and above the neck she looks stunning.  But that dress is an OUT

  • marilyn

Out.  It is a blue corset tacked onto some fabric.  For some reason, it does not look slutty and tacky, but it still is not good quality dress design.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

IN. This is what vampire dressing should be, classy, beautiful and a little bit crazy.

  • Seriously? She’s a pretty girl with huge doe eyes and they’ve made her look gaunt, skeletal and squinty. And her hair is TUCKED BEHIND HER EARS. That’s not a hairstyle, that’s what I used to do when I was five.

I love the colour of the dress but nothing else here is working for me. OUT.

  • DTLAFamilies

IN–but only on her. Anyone else would look ridiculous in this.

  • m0r0

    Not a fan.

  • cleep1000

The bodice is perfection. It’s the draping of the skirt that ruins it for me. OUT.

  • warnerave

SORRY, but it’s an OUT! such a strange dress..

  • kimmeister

Out for the Mickey-Mouse boobs and the “crafty” ring.

  • IN IN IN !! She looks STUNNING. That color is fantastic on her and she looks drop dead gorgeous! Love the hair, the earrings, the makeup. Total WERQ worthy in my book!

  • Emmyllou

    It’s wonderful-ISH. In.

  • In I think. Maybe I am still in the Midnight, teenage girl screaming “Breaking Dawn” haze…..

  • IN!

  • 3boysful

IN!  You can reference lingerie so long as what you’re sporting isn’t in lingerie colors.  She looks FAB.

  • unbornfawn

The hair an make-up are excellent with this dress. The bodice is rather wonderful and it fits very nicely over the girls. Earrings, clutch and ring all work. The skirt is where this look falls apart. After all the care put into that bodice, the skirt looks like it was tacked on at the last minute because the designer ran out of time, making this otherwise great ensemble an OUT.

  • Louise Bryan

I’ve seen brassieres that color.  So much for the color making it not look like underwear.  Actually, it kind of looks like a deep blue corset with a satin towel draped around the hips.  She’s a very beautiful woman in a very weird dress.

  • nannypoo

So she’s got her teeny little boobs stuffed into some pointy little cups. It’s just underwear and a sheet. OUT.

  • AlexisPayne

She looks gorgeous here and kudos to whoever left her hair down but didn’t do the mermaid look or cocker spaniel look. Love the shade of blue and it all WERQs for me. IN

  • quiltrx

OUT because the bodice looks overworked and the skirt looks like there wasn’t time to finish.  (sounds like one of my PR critiques LOL)

The jewelry does look really nice, and she’s a pretty girl.

  • Dawnnewday

The skirt drape immediately said “curtain” to me. I would have liked the top more if it wasn’t so obvious. I get what she’s going for: sexy, goth, vampire, couture and she’s three for four on the effort. Victoria Secrets is not couture. I do love the hair, makeup and jewelry.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • DCSheehan

    Out. So out.

  • MitchellGilburne

    you guys are going senile.

  • ccm800

    LOATHE! Out! Very out.

  • I’ve read over 100 comments and looked at these photos a dozen times, and I just can’t come up with a strong opinion one way or another.  I agree with everyone who has said it looks like a corset with a sheet, yet I also think it’s really more than that.  I’d love to see how the back looks.  It is a deep, gorgeous color which suits her to a T.  The earrings are wonderful and her makeup is very chic. I think I have to give this a very quizzical IN: don’t ask me to defend it too much, though.

  • IN. But I still can’t help but think that the bodice looks like Mickey Mouse ears.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

OUT.  Not only is the ‘top’ a bustier but it is too small for her.

  • lrhoff

    Totally in….go girl!

  • briecee

Oh, it’s an eye-catching dress, all right.  As in, it caught my eye that her boobs are wearing sunglasses.

I just don’t get it.  Sunglasses boobs, random belt, skirt that doesn’t know what it wants to be when it grows up…

OUT.  Oh, well,  I like the blue.

  • demidaemon

I love this from the clavicle? up. Howvere, I have to say I pretty much ubnreservedly hate the dress. It’s a nice color and all, but it looks like a satin teddy (sp?  not particularly interested in women’s undergarments, considering my orientation) witha skirt tucked in, tacked on, or both. OUT.

  • LilyPad

I don’t like the curved line where the bodice and skirt meet; it does look droopy or tacked-on. but I really like the color and I think she looks expensive, chic, and lovely all around.

  • Qitkat

I unreservedly love this color. BUT…
While the bodice works I can’t help but think the skirt ruins the look, absolutely ruins it; she looks like she was caught with her bustier half off in a compromising situation and grabbed a navy sateen sheet in her haste to protect her modesty. But of course this silly scenario doesn’t work because her hair and makeup are fucking perfect. Ooh, love those earrings too.
    Sorry, beautiful, you’re out.

  • Oh god… the fit of the bodice is SO off, it hurts!
I’m a lingerie blogger and this is like the perfect example how cups should NOT fit. ever. OUT.

  • The skirt looks like a sarong wrapped over lingerie.  An expensive sarong wrapped over expensive lingerie, but still…OUT for me.

  • I guess this is just not my cup of tea.

Plus her boobage area has boob cups and a weird hole in the middle. If this looked more like a corset and maybe a modernized version of a medieval corset dress I’d like it more. I guess. I’m not making much sense.

  • OUT. It’s a shame the bodice is so beautiful and the skirt became an afterthought, because that is exactly what it looks like.

  • curiouserandcuriousest

Oh come on, the fit may not be perfect, but she looks spectacular. That is so very IN.

  • IN I love it! the colors are what make it work

  • MaryAtRealityTea

OUT. Not sure why, it just is.

  • librarygrrl64

Ick. OUT. I suspect that your love for her is clouding your judgment on this one, gentlemen. Beautiful woman, crazy dress. It’s a lovely color, though.

    • You suspect wrongly. We actually like the dress.

      • librarygrrl64

        Okay, I stand corrected.

  • lesmaha

Out for me.  Something about it is making me twitchy–the ribbing on the cups? the hitch to the skirt? The things that are working for others aren’t working for me…

  • KathKo

    It’s a WERQ for me.
She looks polished, the dress fit her nicely, the color suits her, hair and make up quite nice, good accessorizing…
The bodice’s a little weird, doing strange things to her boobs, but the rest of it it’s almost flawless so I don’t see any reason to give it an out.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

IN – I know it’s underwear but the whole package – that hair and make up and the way she really used the accessories to play UP her look versus distract from it – IN for me.

  • sweet_potato

  • PeaceBang

The hair and make-up and accessories are stunning. The dress is a gorgeous color. I really hate the bodice. The skirt isn’t really that bad for me. So I’m going with IN.

  • barbarienne

The tiny tit-window in the middle is bugging the hell out of me. It looks as if the fabric pulled off the structure. The close-up shows a little bagginess in the fabric there, so maybe that is what happened.

Other than that, I love it and give it an unreserved IN.

I love the skirt. She’s like an ancient statue, where the figure would be draped across the hips but generally nude. Since she can’t actually go out nude, she’s wearing the next best thing, something tight to her figure and resembling underwear. Without the perfect hair, makeup, and accessories this wouldn’t work at all, but with them, the whole deal is elevated.

  • CrazyAuntie

Love it – love the way the bodice is formed, love the drape of the skirt, LOVE the color… and the styling is pretty great too!

  • I **LOVE** absolutely everything about this. This gets a WERQ and two snaps up from me.

  • OUT. I hate how the cups of the bodice make it look like her black strapless bra is showing. Tacked on skirt is tacky. It’s a great color, and she certainly is pulling it in the right direction with the details, but I just can’t. It’s out.

  • plinkiedoodle

    Way in!

  • Dan Kramer

What’s distracting is her EARS. Are they unusually high on her head or is it just me? She should definitely not tuck her hair behind both ears at once. Just one might be less jarring. I feel bad because that’s not really her fault though. :

  • TSkot

She lost her skirt during dinner somehow, so she wrapped the table cloth around her waist and called it a night:  OUT

  • julnyes

Out, though it is a lovely color.

  • In! Its amazing. Love it.

  • judybrowni

OUT; Too shiny saloon-girl corset, and after-thought drapes ripped down and tied around her waist to cover her nakedness.

Like a dream I had last night, coincidentally.

  • IN!  totes fabu!  oops, i’ve been watching the disney channel for two weeks with a four year old.

  • In! The color is great on her like you said, and I find the construction of the dress interesting in a way that doesn’t detract from the look. She used to model before making pictures, and that shows in the fact she can take a dress that would have looked too complicated or overwhelming on someone else and rock it.

  • INNNNNNN Gorgeous color

  • tit cups not working for me :/

  • claudemtl777

what sends it from IN to WERQ, is the self-confident attitude.

  • i LOVE this on her! wouldn’t work on everyone, but she’s really working it! IN!

  • LOVE IT. Love the construction of the skirt, which might look like it’s tacked on with other dresses, but here looks like a 21st Century revamp of Victoria corset and bustle dresses. Also, she’s not over sexualizing it like some other boobtastic actresses might, so again that steers it clear from lingerie as outerwear.

  • RzYoung

IN, it’s really lovely. Her eye make up is great, look at those earrings!

  • kikisayshi

Enh, with the dress, I could take it or leave it. But her hair and makeup are killer and they really make the look. IN.

  • KSpence

The color and then everything from the shoulders up is great. I hate to disagree with you otherwise, but I hate the dress even more. OUT.

  • OUT. It’s almost there but the skirt and the hole in the bust kill it. Colour is amazing though.

  • IN

  • mznormann

Not good. More underwear than glamour wear…

  • Jennifer Coleman

Cracktastically IN. Never thought that would happen.

  • jmorino08

OUT! Underwear with a skirt (poorly) tacked on.

  • formerlyAnon

If y’all are still counting, IN. It’s an odd dress, but the “hit your eye” impression is very good.

  • guest2visits

    I think she looks stunning in this unusual dress; I would love the dress more if the tiny hole between the cups were gone;
the corset is busy enough without it.

  • Stephanie Sun

Out.  She just needs a stein in her hand to complete the beer wench look.

  • lalahartma

  • On Grain

Sad that your relationship with Donna Karan doesn’t get this an OUT. The dress is ridiculously unflattering on her. Yes, there are actual design elements to this dress, but oh dear if it is unflattering.
