IN or OUT: Allison Williams in Peter Som

Posted on November 15, 2012

We don’t know, kittens. Sometimes a dress is just too much dress for its own good.

Allison Williams attends The Ninth Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards in New York City in Peter Som.

Peter Som Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Maria Bradley

We like the shoes; her hair and makeup look great; and the color is beautiful on her. We even like the shape of the skirt. But that bodice … we just can’t get behind it. Especially since it’s so complicated it’s actually working against itself. The seams are way too prominent and the … what do you call them? Side straps? The side straps look wrinkled and crushed.

But maybe we’re just not getting it. We’re willing to hear a defense of this look. Remember to show your work.

IN! For the reasons I am about to put forth, T Lo!

OUT! You’re so right, T Lo! Can I touch your hair?

  • G

    It’s a horrible dress.  OUT.

  • Liana Brooks

It looks uncomfortable. I don’t like high necklines, but… BUT! She looks fantastic, outshines the model, and it frames her face. IN

  • Missy Covington

If only the bodice didn’t make the girls look like they were rocketing away in opposite directions (warp speed!).

I love everything else though. Umm… Reluctant IN for being interesting. It is an in that is weighty with reservations, but the rest of her look is too darn perfect for the harsh slap of an out.

    • Nancer

“If only the bodice didn’t make the girls look like they were rocketing away in opposite directions (warp speed!)” Yes! This! Well put.

    • Kiltdntiltd

And the bodice is so badly fitted that the way it’s sagging at the busy darts only makes that more apparent. O. U. T.

      • J. Preposterice

I think, if it were exquisitely fitted, it could look amazing.  But it’s NOT, and so any chance it had…well.

      • poggi

Yes! It’s not even fitted well on the model. Seamed, pleated, saggy, pointing in wonky directions ate not descriptors you want applied to your breasts.

    • DeborahJozayt

If she doesn’t raise her arms, it’s an in. Otherwise it’s an out :)

  • Cassie L

OUT. Whose bright idea was that center hole, anyway?

    • Lizzyisi

Exactly. Without the center cut out and that stupid little bow, it would have stood a chance. As it is, it’s out because the straps fight for focus with the cut out and that bow belongs on an entirely different, not architectural dress.

    • Introspective

I feel like center holes are becoming a thing in fashion right now. while stylists seem to think theyre hot, their ability to stumpify or otherwise render wonky the frame of these petite, uber-fit celebs (exhibit A above, exhibit B Christina Ricci yesterday) tells me that the shittery of sunroofs on torsos has gotta stop stat.

  • gillian holroyd

There’s a *bow* in the front. OUT

    • Stacy Parker Cole

^^THIS.  It looks like a tacky add on.

  • Sobaika

Out. She’s gorgeous and I love the color and her makeup, but the bodice is too complicated for her. She’d look lovely in an OdlR or maybe even the sleek lines of Calvin Klein.

  • Nancer

It looks really awkward. Her boobs aren’t sitting properly, seams are weird – this dress doesn’t even work on the model. Sorry, OUT.

  • Siobhan Connellan

The top looks like a crazed bridesmaid took a machete into David’s Bridal. Out.

    • Noelle Haland

      BAM! You nailed it!

  • Emily

Out. The dress is tragic and the makeup makes her look cross-eyed.

  • Aly Light

Jeez, just remove ONE element from that bodice, and you might have a cute dress. This is just a slight step too far.

  • In_Stitches

She’s serving up some fabulous face, but it’s an OUT for the hilariously horrendous boob seams.

  • Janet B

    OUT.  No question.

  • patticake1601

It makes her torso look sad and saggy when she is anything but sad and saggy. It’s a sad dress.

  • wisenhar

My first thought: “Are those nipples on her shoulders/upper arms?”  OUT!

  • Violina23

It looks like one of those toilet paper wedding dresses at a bridal shower… out!

  • Gabriella M

All the zig-zags in front of that green backdrop make me feel like I’m looking at someone’s interpretation of a latticework trellis in outfit form. Dizzying. OUT.

  • Beardslee

OUT.  Bodice is stupid and so is wearing a skimpy pastel springtime dress IN NOVEMBER.

  • Jangle57

That top reminds me of one of those bras from way back when (think the Animal House womens dorm scene).  Not to mentioned the tortured ‘sleeves’.  I’m not even wild about the color.  OUT OUT OUT

  • Sara L.

All the criss-crossing–bodice, shoes, even her goddamn legs–is making my eyes cross. OUT.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

OUT.  The extraneous bow seals the deal.

    • Anplica Fiore

Yeah the extra little bow just topped this whole look as an out…wrapped & topped with a  bow!

  • thecitysleeps

I like the colour and the side straps.  But those seams across her boobs just look like a failed attempt at Madonna bra.  And I don’t like her hair.  It looks slightly lopsided and like an old cartoon character from Cartoon Network I can’t name right now.  So OUT for me.

  • Rhonda Shore

in with reservations.  she’d look great in victoria beckham.

  • LauraWL

    Those boob seams are… unfortunate.

  • kikisayshi

Ooohh, I don’t know… if it had the cross-straps over the shoulder OR the off the shoulder straps, it would be cute (maybe even with the cutout, which I just can’t get behind in many looks). The skirt is adorable and I love this color. I can’t help cringing a little when I look at this, so it’s gotta be OUT.

    • kikisayshi

Oh yeah, and the shoes don’t go.

  • Donna Tabor

I give the designer credit for such an unusual design, but it’s really poorly executed, especially in the bust.

She is breathtaking, though, and as someone else said, she definitely outshines that wan, consumptive-looking model. Who may or may not have slept all night, and who clearly bypassed any hairdresser that may have been present.

By the way, does anyone else thing Ms. Williams looks like Amanda Peet? That’s who I thought it was.

  • StellaZafella

Sharon Needles alert: here’s your runway costume for “Bride of the Mummy”.

    • out for a walk

I don’t know why you’d wish this dress on Sharon no matter what the occasion!

      • StellaZafella

Because Sharon would first tear it to shreds and break a blood capsule over it and then rip it off at the end of the runway and throw it into the mosh pit to be trampled…all in a very tasteful and ladylike manner, of course> 😉

  • Vera

    Way over-designed. OUT.

  • altalinda

Out.  Makes her shoulders look massive.

  • Maine1ac

This looks like the kind of dress that a PR contestant would turn out in a one day challenge, and you’d think, “That could look really great if they’d had more time”. Out.

  • Beth Mellone

    Way, way, way, way out.

  • Ceur

Out – because it was complicated already from the thumbnail. Always a bad sign.

  • Ann Erickson

  • JasmineAM

    Leeloo Dallas’s prom dress.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OMG that is hilarious.  I love you now.

  • kimmeister

Out, just for the crime that is happening with her bust.

  • tereliz

Yuck. There’s nothing salvageable about this garment. OUT.

  • MilaXX

OUT! You’re so right, T Lo!
This gives her pointy tits and no one needs pointy tits.

  • jw_ny

The fabric obviously cannot be manipulated the way the designer intended…especially at the bust/bust darts.  This should never have left the sewing room.

    • l_c_ann

      jw_ny said it well.

  • Ana_ragu

Out. If for no other reason than that damn bow at the midriff. ugh ugh ugh.

  • shoes for all

Ugh. No. She looks like a deer in the headlights. OUT

  • Laylalola

It seems like it might work if the fabric for the top straps were different. As the top part is now, that fabric is too heavy, and there’s too much of it.

  • oatmealpie

If she were owning it she could make it work. She just looks uncomfortable and anxious to get home. OUT.

  • jennyv

OUT. Way too much going on with that dress.

  • jmorino08

OUT! That bodice is Awful wrapped up with a bow. Literally!

  • Deborah Lipp

    Ugh. Out.

  • MinAgain

The model scares me.  I fear that, if I get to close, she will try to eat my brain.

  • Sara__B

    OUT. Pretty lady. Silly dress.

  • Becca Cleary

OUT. i hate her and this, but i must say, her brows are incredible.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

The top looks like it was made with Ace bandages.

  • twocee

This looks like a PR reject.  Out.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Just what I was thinking — looks like one of thos PR projects where the designers try to pass off torturing the fabric as “couture”.

  • AuntJentie

  • Pamela

Someone was playing Cat’s Cradle with her dress!!

  • Amy

I don’t care for the straight jacket styling of the bodice. No defense here!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

The dress makes her nipples look like they are long horizontal things.  I can’t stop looking at them.  The Bodice from Hell.

  • clevRcat

Out.  That bodice is just weird.  And it would be really difficult to hail a cab with those sleeves.

  • demidaemon

OUT. I hate where that cutout hits her.

  • decormaven

Out. Looks like a Project Runway challenge where the designers were given one flat bedsheet to whip into a frock. Not even her strong makeup and fierce footwear can take away from the monstrosity that is the bodice. Or is it the Oddice?

  • Gayer Than Thou

Ugh.  I hate it — the bodice is way over-complicated.  The belly cut-out isn’t sexy, it’s just odd.  Hardly anyone would be able to pull that off.  The arm straps are unwearable: if she does anything other than stand with her arms at her side the straps look wonky. Even the hem is doing something strange.  And the color and the twee little bow (actually the only things I might like about this if it were a different dress altogether) conflict with the efforts towards sexiness.  Out out out.

  • Merneith

Out. It doesn’t look good on the model either. And isn’t that Ronald Reagan’s old hair do?

  • CurbGirl

OUT. The dress is a dart fest!

  • ringthing

In a football game, this dress would be penalized for unnecessary fussiness. Out.

  • zelavie

    Out.  TOO MUCH.

  • IrmaLaDuce

Awkward and ill-conceived. It’s a puckered, wrinkly mess on the model too. Looks like something a late-season Project Runway contestant would come up with.

  • MajorBedhead

Out. That seaming is just ugly.

  • unbornfawn

Over designed. It does not need the cut-out or bow thing in front. The rest of the bodice is interesting and pretty enough. I liked it in the thumbnail but when I got to the midriff —-  OUT.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

OUT! That would be auf-worthy on PR.

  • Mismarker

Hair and makeup are gorgeous.  Everything else is…not.  Out.

  • Laura Schultz

OUT. But I like the earrings.

  • fungstyle

She and Amanda Peet could play twin sisters.

  • Judy_J

What’s with the bared midriffs all of a sudden?  Is this a trend?  If so, winter is not the time to pull this look out.  And speaking of out, that’s what I say about this….OUT.

  • NurseEllen

OUT, for both bad design and bad execution.  I’ve seen Project Runway designs that came out better than this.  I also hate the shiny material and the bow in the front.  And it looks uncomfortable.

    Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln……….

  • 3boysful

She looks lovely, but the bust fit is atrocious, and folds in the side strap thingies form a “strap nipple” that I cannot unsee.

  • marlie

SO close! I want to like it, and I think if it was tailored to fit her better and was a little… smoother?… up top I’d give it an in.

  • Sarah Veenstra

Gonna go against the grain and do her a solid. Not an IN, but an In. Her coloring is fantastic with that rum pink, I have a soft spot for Peter Som, and I still declare her best dressed of the Emmys in that green.

  • Dhammadina

    Shudder. Out.

  • Pcatt

Out.  Too much criss-crossing on the bodice.  Looks like she is wearing bandages.  And then the shoes repeat the pattern.

  • marilyn

Out.  Pink bandage dress, black bandage shoes.  Too many lines.  Everything else is fine.

  • TSkot

Doesn’t even work on the model:  OUT

  • j_anson

I don’t LOVE this, but… I like it. IN. Can I defend that? Uh… given that it’s combining cues from two relatively “heavy” styles – corsetry/bondage and drapey satin dresses – it’s actually less heavy and complicated than it could have been, and the overall look is not quite like anything I’ve seen before. And it IS a good color on her.

It does need better tailoring, though.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Out for the awkward boob points. She looks great, but her boobies are sad.

  • alyce1213

Overdesigned and failed.  And more bare belly!!  Hate it.

  • Corsetmaker

It’s awfy badly made! The fabric is too bulky for the design. Had the off the shoulder portion been fitted to lie flat rather than have that pleat and the bust been tailored, darted, pressed then it might’ve worked. And I don’t like how the skirt hangs either.

    So, out.

  • kingderella

i like the idea of the bust, but i dont think its cut and executed very elegantly. it doesnt look good on the model either. OUT.

  • Lilak

I take your point, TLo, but I must say I’ve been fine with this sort of (otherwise wacky) thing on professional models when they attend charity dinners, FW parties, etc. as civilians.  I expect it’s due to some sort of definition/classification bias in my brain — I actually see a different garment when one of those stylish giraffes wears it, vs. celebrities and society women.

Nevertheless, I think Miss Williams actually looks quite fetching.  The only hiccup for me is the bow (a little too Easter Sunday on A.W.)

  • Kerry McCombs

    Ew, no, out, awful.

  • Emily Roach

Oh god. Oh god no. SQUISHY NIPPLES!!!

  • MzzPants

     OUT.  Gawdawful.

  • Mexxoo

Wow, it looks like a 13-year-olds poorly stuffed bra on top.  OUT! (Can I touch your hair?)

  • librarygrrl64

OUT. really unflattering on her. Maybe if she were 6′ tall.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. As you said, totally overworked, to the point that the bow on the front just makes me laugh. “Hmm…what else does this bodice need, besides halter straps, off-the-shoulder sleeves, a center cut-out, and nipple darts? I know a bow!”

  • Kate4queen

OUT looks like I made it.

  • Snailstsichr

Poor Allison looks embarrassed to be caught in this dress. I feel bad for her, but the dress is still an out – but I really like her makeup.

  • Noelle Haland

Awful. Terrible. Ugh. That bodice is just plain FUG and it does her body NO favors. The shoes with another outfit would be killer, but here, all I see when I look at her is CRISSCROSSCRISSCROSS over and over. And did we really need that bow at her waist? Since there wasn’t enough going on and all??  OUT.

  • Jesse Rabbits

    Too fold-y. OUT.

  • Melissa Montenes

I was musing on whether Rooney Mara could pull this look off, but even on her I think the boobs would look weird….OUT.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I think it would have worked better in a darker color. I like it. IN.

  • DesertDweller79

Out.  The darts on the bust make me sad.

  • Eovaai

Way too complicated and weird looking. OUT.

  • Monabel

The top is interesting, though it doesn’t work. But why does the (shortened) skirt flip out on the side like that? That’s what irked me.

  • Trisha26

Out. On the model the bodice area looks pleated not seamed and the model is small-busted so all you see is pleating detail. Poor Allison actually has boobs that fill out the pleats and all you see are the seams and a little extra fabric that puts the fit off. Absolutely love the skirt (even the little bow) and her hair and makeup.

  • Dollsaga

a bunch of bandages warpped around a wounded soldier, her face/makeup looks as harsh as an ancient roman warrior.  OUT

  • L.

OUT.  Those are the worst darts I’ve ever seen.

  • m0r0

  • chylde

     mummy! out.

  • Danielle West

Her boobs look ridiculous.  It’s just too much.  Out.

  • lizajane1776

    Out! Ugly bodice is ugly.

  • TieDye64

Now that is one horrendously overworked bodice. Easy OUT.

  • quiltrx

A few too many elements in a small area of the dress.  I think the fabric is too heavy/bulky for this kind of treatment, too.

  • kcarb1025

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Out. She has too much chest for this dress.

  • neofashionista

OUT that top is the definition of overworked!

  • Louise Bryan

Bodice as bow.  Or is it bow as bodice.  Mind exploding….OUT!

  • curiouserandcuriousest

     Profoundly ill-fitting. OUT.

  • formerlyAnon

That bodice (and the shoulders and sleevelets) needed to be impeccably sleek and fitted for this to work, in which case I would have liked it.

As is, it just looks odd, unsuccessful, and vaguely retro sci fi movie. OUT.

  • prettybigkitty

    Out.   Cannot condone nipple pleats.

  • bertkeeter

Oh..Oh…Oh…lets add a bow to the dress just to be sure enough stuff going on!

  • Contralto

OUT.  Looks as though the dress is on backwards.

  • Aurumgirl

She looks unsure.  And that dress is nobody’s friend.

  • Haley Buchanan

    Poorly fitted straight jacket.  OUT.

  • Cheesely

OUT. Maybe if the top fit better… maybe. It is just too complicated. Plus I don’t like the auburn cray-pa look of her eyebrows.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT. Definitely because of the wonky seams, specifically the ones at her breasts.  I think it could have been better had that open panel not been there as well. Shame because everything besides the dress is great.

  • Jaeda Laurez

OUT- her boobs are sliding towards her armpits. And while her makeup is nice, it is NOT nice with this dress. But I hate the dress, so I’d keep the makeup and change the outfit.

  • Judy_S

I will give her an IN, because she seems to be overcoming the liability of a problematic dress, pretty much with styling and a smile. She looks better than the model, anyway.
My impression is that the top straps and all are supposed to look like a big, pink, stiff bow. Not so much bondage as gift-wrapping.

  • B_C_J

If you are going to wear a dress that is out of the box, then the fit better be PERFECT because you are going to garner a lot of attention. What is happening at the bust line is ridiculous. Moreover, it is no better on the model. Therefore it is a construction/design issue. OUT

  • annrr

I think it is the wrong fabric, the bust darts aren’t working and neither is the pleat on the side thingy. Both look terrible on the model also. Lastly that bow is ridiculous.

  • ojosazules

A girl never wants her bosoms to look like gills. Out.

  • DinahR

Ew.  OUT.  This looks bad on the model, not sure why a girl would choose it.  Also, she looks 90’s retro to me and it doesn’t seem to gel with the dress at all.

  • mmc2315

    OUT!  Awful dress.

    Hair, make-up, shoes = great.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Without the peek-a-boo tummy and that silly little bow, I could have gotten behind this. OUT.

  • Cathy S

No. The bottom half is nice. I’m sorry they mangled the top though. The skirt deserved better than that.

  • stagmania

    OUT. The bodice is grotesque.

  • MGMcD

I’d call it IN since she usually dresses so J Crew that I like her with a bit of edge. The only thing I hate is the bow on the waistband which isn’t enough to kill it for me.

  • Joyce VG

OUT!  May I touch your hair now please?

  • Elizabeth

OUT. This dress is trying too hard; and it makes her breasts look odd (which is a shame, because she may be bland on “Girls” but there’s no denying she is a lovely girl with a great figure).

  • meridian5

The bodice definitely has problems, but I think in a jewel tone it might of been less obvious. Out!

  • KathKo

    Oh Lord…
did she screamed “Too complicated dress ! Want that ! Wantwantwantwantwant !” to her hopeless stylist ?
She actually looks pleased as punch, standing there…

  • Michael Owens

Agree with your assessment. Hair, make-up, shoes, and skirt (color) are great. But what’s with the package ribbon bodice!?

  • FashionShowAtLunch

This just proves it: the cut-out trend is out of control at this point.

  • phrenk

    Unquestionably out to me.

  • NCDFan

    Out, I hate titlines.

  • ThaliaMenninger

So was she  injured in the Great War, or did somebody disturb her pyramid in Giza and now she’s walking among us?

  • JaneDC

That smile says “maybe this was not the best idea.”. She was lucky to be able to get her hand on her hip!

  • snarkykitten

    it’s literally a bandage dress

  • lucasuk82

Out.  I actually kind of like the wrapped effect of the straps, but it’s doing…something.. to her breasts. It like she has opposable  nipples.   Also, no dress needs a sternum window, let alone a sternum window with a bow.

  • J MN

OUT.  Way too crazy with the straps and darts and I hate the cut out trend.  Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

  • kategs

She looks fabulous but that dress is an out.  The bow is just silly.  And those darts!  ehn.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I love the color on her, her hair and makeup are great, but that dress – I just can’t.  I’ll give her a little out, not a big OUT.

  • Bwin51

I like the concept but I don’t like the hole in the middle.

  • Dagney

I think it could look good, I love the styling, but I don’t think that dress FITS her properly. A reluctant out.

  • oohsparkley!

It’s wierd, that cutout should make me hate it, it’s fussy and it’s got some strange points, but I still like it.  The sum is greater than it’s parts. In.
