Helen Mirren on Jimmy Fallon

Posted on November 19, 2012

Helen Mirren makes an appearance on the ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’ show in New York City.

But we’re still going to criticize a little. The dress is really great on her. It seems like a bit much for a sit-down on Jimmy Fallon, but that’s fine. She kept the hair, makeup and jewelry low-key enough to balance it out. But kittens, we just can’t with what’s going on from the knees down. By all means, Helen, wear hosiery. One might even say it’s a good idea for a lady above a certain age. But this is so dark and heavy-looking. There are more sheer blacks than this to choose from. And don’t finish it off with open-toed shoes that match the dress. That’s just awkward-looking to us. Sheer black or grey (maybe with a little shimmer to them) hose and pair of black pumps with some sort of bling on them would have been perfect here.

  • You know those Manolo’s from the SATC movie? Those, plus nude hose.

  • Vaniljekjeks

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Agree on the hose.  Kind of loving the shoes…

  • cooperalden

I think matchy is back and here to stay for a while…just saying.

    • cooperalden

forgot to add…but not those shoes…they are…not right.

    • Jackie4g

For a woman of a certain age, matchy is a whole lot more comfortable than, shall we say, adventurous?

  • Vera L-

She’s tiny and that dress is doing nothing but pulling and puckering around her hips and waist. do not like.

From the waist up, she’s killing it.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Agreed.  The shot of her sitting down looks great, then I scrolled down to the standing pics and it was one big wince.  That dress is doing her no favors beyond the neckline and color.

      • kschwarting

Yup, that’s exactly right.  She’s La Helen and therefore can do no wrong, but the dress IS doing her wrong in that second shot.  It should not make her look lumpy.

    • alyce1213

Not so tiny, about 5’4″ – average height for a woman born when she was (I think of tiny as less than 5’2″).
Agree she’s killing it from the waist up.

  • zippyzippity

Oh, gawd, I think this is way too tight on her hips and upper thighs, and looks terrible, at least when she’s standing.  Anyone got some cling-free spray?

    • AmeliaEve

       She needs a damn slip.

  • Great colour on her – maybe a little too tight when she is sitting down.

    • alyce1213

See, I think it looks much better sitting; it’s when she’s standing up that you can seen the pulling and clinging.

  • Tatiana Luján

Open toe shoes with hose is a fashion invented in hell.

  • SewingSiren

I really love the whole look. The dress is blue/black iridescent, so the black hose work (but I think black stockings go with everything so

  • Soooo much blue and black on that screen.  The matchy shoes are not helped by the fact that she almost matches the couch too.  The hose looked fine if you just see the sheer knees like in the first picture, but the angles where they go solid black are too much.

  • StellaZafella

The shots seated are A++! She does it for me!

  • alyce1213

No, no, no.  I know that love is blind, but there’s more to criticize than the shoes. The dress is really great on her? On top of the fact that it doesn’t fit her well, it’s shiny (always makes a bad fit worse), pulling, and clingy.

From the shoulders up, lovely — but downward, a disaster.  She does sit very nicely.

  • Puck Thornton

Yes, yes, the dress is a bit tight and the stockings and shoes are wrong. But Miss Helen can’t do wrong in my eyes. She is a fab actress and one hell of a sexy minx!

  • Jangle57

I think she’s great and usually looks like a million bucks – but this look?  More like 1.99……

  • Goddess amongst mere mortals.

  • I like the look.

  • trisker

Love shoes – hose too heavy.  LOVE HER

  • Helen Mirren can do no wrong in my eyes.  If she came out in full on mermaid costume, I’d be bowing to her.

    • MissMariRose

Same here. I see only perfection when it comes to Dame Mirren.

  • decormaven

The shade of hose is too dark, and there’s definitely a static cling issue going on. But she has such joie de vivre, it covers these minor issues.

  • Ceur

That’s a sitting down-dress if I ever saw one! She does look smashing in the chair shots.

  • GorgeousThings

Ah, she’s still my hero. And the fact that she makes small mistakes just endears her to me even more!

  • Le_Sigh

    Calves up is utterly spectacular.

    Calves down is utterly Deschanel.

    Still.  It’s Queen Helen.

  • Agree about the hose – they are maybe even tights! – but my God, this woman is 65ish and look how freaking hot she is. In other words, am willing to overlook the hose/tights. I would wear this dress and feel sexy and I am 25 years her junior, yet she still manages to look hotly age-appropriate. Anyone know who it’s by? Want!!

  • MilaXX

I agree with what you are saying and perhaps it’s just the power of Mirren but I loved this look.

  • MzzPants

I wonder if the dress was chosen to blend with the chair.

  • allaboutthewalterbenjamins

Forget the dress:  you can’t come for her . She still manages to look much younger than Jessica Biel in the next entry.

    • lalahartma

      So true!

  • bertkeeter

OKAY…T n L…I want her as a client! She is chic as hell…amazing actor and just keeps gettingf better! Agree…dress perfect but would have liked a nude hose, black heel and a different set wouldn’t hurt! Never a good idea to match the chair your sitting on…:)!

    • MrsMaxPower

I was so blinded by Helen love that I didn’t even notice she matched the chair until I read your comment. Agreed that it was a poor choice, but I still have to give that little minx a pass. 😉

  • Good heavens, I love that woman. A lot.

But yeah, the hose and shoes combination does not work for me & I agree with the clingy comments. Still. It’s Helen Mirren. She always looks radiant.

  • Tammy_4

My gal Helen, LOVE HER.  My one moment of celeb nearness was at Buckingham Palace (outside the gate unfortch).  My daughter and I were gawking tourists, wondering what all the fuss was.  I looked to my right, and HELEN MIRREN was standing thisclose to me, posing for the cameras. She had just gotten her “dame hood”.  She is tiny and gorgeous.  I am neither.  And all I could think of was to turn to my daughter and yell “THAT’S HELEN MIRREN!!!”  At the time, daughter had no idea who she was and wasn’t impressed.  Helen ignored me, rightfully so.

  • Judy_J

I agree completely….nude hose would have been so much better with this dress.  The black hose just drag it down.

  • neofashionista

too much like hilary clinton, no bueno

  • I love the dress and she looks fantastic, but the overall effect is making her look like a floating head against that set.

  • CeeQ

Absolutely agree, the tights and shoes were awful, totally messed up the look!

  • judit szilak

Black hosiery and tights are ubiquitous on British girls/women. More often than not, they pair it with a loose fitting dress or sweater.

  • DesertDweller79

Nice neckline and color.  I like her hair and makeup.  But, I don’t like the way the fabric pulls across her hips.  She looks pretty good sitting down, but not standing up.

  • She’s stunning in the seated pictures, from the chest up. She’s just gorgeous. I LOVE the Queen.

  • Jackie4g

Dame Helen is a great looking woman, but she doesn’t have great legs. I like the dark hose, and it’s a good point on the sheerness, they could be a bit more sheer,  but I like their deep tones. She’s altogether admirable, isn’t she?

  • Call me Bee

I love her shoes and I love her.

  • formerlyAnon

I’d have liked the dress better were it matte – or an elegantly cut combination of matte and shiny. The neckline is perfect for sit down t.v.

Dead on about the shoes & hosiery.

  • kikisayshi

My 36yo husband has a crush on Ms. Helen. She looks great, and I agree about the tights.

  • frankystein123

    Still a Dame nonetheless.

  • AuntHo

This hairstyle makes me think she needs to play a man in something. Not “Helen Mirren as Prospero”, but “Cate Blanchett as Dylan”. Her face structure strongly resembles an actual male actor that I’m too lazy to think of right now, and IN A GOOD WAY bc everything about her is good. Maybe it’s the makeup? I dunno. I’ll get back to you on this theory.
