Gosling and Mendes in NYC

Posted on November 27, 2012

Y’know… there’s something a little funny about that Mendes gal. She dresses fabulously when she’s walking down the street by herself, but she tends to dress a little frumpier when she’s on the arm of her man.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes bundle up and go arm in arm around New York City. Eva is wearing a Max Mara camel coat.

Don’t get us wrong; this is a perfectly serviceable outfit. But she never settles for perfectly serviceable when she’s photographed by herself. It’s like she turns over the preening to Gosling. His outfit is clearly a hell of a lot more attention-seeking than hers. You could spot him from a block or two away.

Which isn’t t say they both don’t look cute here; just that the male plumage is much more colorful than the female’s when it comes to these two lovebirds.

Can I say that I detest her snickers?

      • kimmeister

I’m guessing you’re not referring to a candy bar?

      • alyce1213

I am confounded.  What are her snickers?

        • formerlyAnon

I’m guessing sneakers. And, I agree with the lack of enthusiasm for her footwear.

          • Monabel

Or is it the smirk on her face?

      • http://twitter.com/FlaviaGPantoja Flavia Pantoja

Yes, yes, sorry, sneakers… Are these the Isabelle Marrant’s ones that everybody seems to be wearing? Can not stand them.

    • Sara__B

Perhaps they feel the need for their outfits to work together, so she chose a hat to match his jeans and the solid coat not to clash with his plaid, and then borrowed his shoes. (I like her coat a lot. The hat and the shoes are clearly for comfort, not looks.)

      • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

EXACTLY what I was going to say, except for borrowing the shoes.  I do love the print of his jacket.

      • http://twitter.com/k_wilson k_wilson

I was thinking along the same lines, though what I was thinking was they’re dressing for the same occasion, and whatever occasion it is seems pretty casual.  She can’t wear her sky high platform sandals and tidy floral shifts from the solo outings if he’s wearing hoodies and flannels, she’d look ridiculous.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

She looks happy.  That’s the best plumage for any woman.

      • StellaZafella

Stand By Your Man… It would work for me!

      • FrayedMachine

I was thinking the same thing. It actually struck me more how happy she looked than what she was wearing.

      • Vickiefantastico

I have to agree with you. I think she looks adorable!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Her hat is terrible. I hope she was given it by an orphan or something.

      • Carolyn

        It’s very tea cosyesque.

      • Judy_S

My theory is that he had it in his jacket pocket and gave it to her because her ears were cold.

    • alyce1213

What the hell with that hat?  99 cent store?? But they look happy and nice.

    • Violina23

I kinda adore his look here

    • Mary229

They both look super happy.  Also, can I just thank you guys for not feeling the need to mention their ages and point out that she’s several years older than him in your post?   I’m so beyond tired of women who date younger men being treated as pathetic cougers.  Thank you for not writing about it.   Great couple.

      • homespunner

Ack. But there you go mentioning it. ;-)

        • Mary229

Yeah, I mentioned it in my praise to TLo.  But sometimes we have to mention the behavior that usually happens in order to call attention to the right way to handle something.  This is the RIGHt way.  So it gets a shout out.

      • Candigirl1968

It’s only 5 or 6 years.  Does anyone still mention that small a difference with folks who are in their 30s?  It isn’t like she is Madonna or JLo with their boy toys.
PS on the dressing in a complimentary way:  Even the shape of her sunglasses reference his glasses.  I wonder if they are naturally playing off of each other, or whether there is a stylist in the background aggressively dressing them as a single unit.

        • Mary229

Yes.  People mention it if the woman is older.

    • Ann Erickson

Maybe because every time they’re together, they’ve just got done banging and she puts on whatever to go out for coffee? My guess. I do that with my bf. He also likes me to be more relaxed and chill around him, doesn’t care if I’m all made up or not. I think that’s the little snuggly stage they are in!

I never see him when I don’t think, “Hey, girl…”

Hey, boy. I really, really want to buy that jacket for my husband.

      • Cathy S

I love his jacket. I would like it for me. My husband can go buy his own damn jacket.

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

You mean like, “Hey girl, I made this hat for you. Let’s go for a walk so I can watch you wear it.”

        • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

    • Mismarker

I may or may not be insanely jealous of her.  That hat is ri-goddamned-diculous.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I mean, she’s wearing a Max Mara coat so she’s not exactly slumming it.  And I like a guy who doesn’t seem to expect his girlfriend to always be dressed to the nines.

    • kolokOlchik

What’s that thing on her head?  Is that a bird’s nest?

    • LuisaNL

that hat needs to be burned immediately.

    • FashionShowAtLunch

I think I might love her bag, if I could get a better glimpse of it.

      • http://twitter.com/floretbroccoli Florrie Brafman

I guess that’s the sure sign that she isn’t on display — she isn’t showing the photographers her IT bag.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Ms. Eva here is throwing her head back in laughter at all of us jealous gals who wish to be pretty and have Gosling on their arm. Bitch.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=571205045 Kent Roby

It ain’t just the gals who are jealous!  ;)

    • Sobaika

It think when she’s with him the persona taken on is more look-I-am-serious-person-and-don’t-want-my-picture-taken-don’t-you-see but maybe I’m just being cynical.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Oh, him and his overly aged shoes. Will he ever stop dressing like he’s starring in his own “pseudo-poetic white dude seeking self post-college and finds a MPDG” movie? That jacket was not enough in Manhattan this weekend.

Her hat looks like a smurf gave birth on it.

And yes, they are both lovely and should basically walk around naked for our viewing pleasure.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

I could get behind her outfit if she had a more complimentary hat on.  That blue is too distracting.

    • kimmeister

I think his cuffed jeans and filthy-looking shoes look silly.

    • BrooklynBomber

No comment from Lo on the blanket plaid?

    • l_c_ann

Back in the day, when there were fine department stores, these two would have been followed (discretely) by a store walker.

    • miagain

yeah… but we don’t know what’s under that coat

    • http://twitter.com/maisimai Robena Meek

I am over his scruffed up shoes. Clearly, they are in casual mode, but that is no excuse for his shoes, they belong in the wood shed for work day. Get thee off to the Fluevog store and get something decent on your feet.

    • calimon

Who knows? I kind of imagine she is poking fun at all of us with her wacky get-up, and she is having the last laugh.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

      I want his jacket. Bad.

    • marilyn

I think she is trying to dress younger because she is with him.  She does not want to look like his mom.  She has a sense of elegance that places her in her age group.   So, she thinks this makes her look his age.

    • amf0001

I think she’s making a distinction – alone,  it’s work,  I’m perfect,  with him, it’s real,  so I look like myself…  it subtly underlies that this isn’t a celebrity rel,  but rather a real one…  I like it that she doesn’t ahve to work so hard around him.

    • e jerry powell

Baby Goose will not brook being upstaged.

    • http://twitter.com/annalizabet Anna Elizabeth

Can I just say that I love that she always carries the same bag? It’s such a cute purse, too, and I always get a kick out of seeing celebrities reusing accessories that they clearly love.

I think her outfit is perfectly cute except for the shoes, but I am concerned about The Gosling’s pants. They’re so…blue. They alarm me.

    • decormaven

His boots look like they were aged in manure. Not an uptown look. Crushing hard on his jacket, though. I’d be on board with her look if she had picked a more neutral shade of headgear.

    • formerlyAnon

I prefer to think that when they’re together she spends less time on her ensembles because they’re busy having genetically blessed sex.

    • drdirection

Oh, Eve Mendes is in the picture too.  I didn’t notice her.

    • crash1212

Want her coat and her shoes….and her man.

    • librarygrrl64

      Her hat is ridiculous.

    • frannyprof

I have that purse! Dooney & Bourke, circa 1993. I feel like such a fashionista right now.

    • dawn stough

they look like a hipster couple you’d bump into at the walmart here in south alabama.

      • http://twitter.com/baileyleon Bailey Lovell

I’m from North Alabama!  Athens, about a half hour north of Huntsville.  I feel like I just found a neighbor!  :)

    • Louise Bryan

If you think the male plumage is more notable, talk it up instead of griping about her outfit, which looks very normal.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

Ah, new love or relatively new love. Her outfit and their expressions remind me of dating and early marriage, when my husband referred to a pair of sweatpants I wore as my “sexy” pants. Granted, I bought them at Nordstrom Rack, so they started out as expensive sweatpants, but still. And my husband also dressed pretty sharp, now that I think about it. Now we’ve settled into looking similar. I need to dig out those sweatpants–although maybe he won’t find them as adorably rumpled as he did before.

      • formerlyAnon

Ha ha! In high school, my boyfriend had a pair of worn, old, corduroys that hung *just so* off of his hips. His mom kept trying to get rid of them and I’d bug him into retrieving them.

Now that I am older than his mom was then, and mother to a grown up boy, I laugh wondering what he said to her (if anything) and what she thought about his uncharacteristic determination to keep them.

    • Insidiously

      I hate her.

    • j_anson

I suspect she’s trying to dress hipster to go with her hipster boyfriend. She’s not really a hipster girl. When she can dress to her own style, she does better.

    • Carly Warnock

I dislike these two together. They don’t seem well matched and I think it shows.

She always strikes me as dressing a bit mature so it’s refreshing to see her dressed casually but she is definitely looking like the less attractive half of the pair in these photos.

    • bitterk

She looks very healthy and happy.

    • kcarb1025

I don’t get why everyone goes gaga over this couple; they are incredibly boring.

    • lolaleen

There’s someone in these pictures besides Ryan Gosling?

    • ccm800

I covet everything he has on.

    • jan lee

Can I just say that I hate those jeans on the Gosling, it’s really not his color, is it just me?

    • Vanja

I like it that she’s wearing what seems to be her own stuff, because that looks like the same coat she wore in Paris in November 2011.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Her coat is gorgeous.
