Evan Rachel Wood in L.A.

Posted on November 05, 2012

Darlings, this post goes out to all the kittens who look at magazine covers and red carpet appearances and sigh wistfully that they will never look as perfectly beautiful as those strange, genetically gifted creatures known as celebrities.

Because you should never forget, darlings:

Evan Rachel Wood and new husband Jamie Bell make a quick trip to a store in Los Angeles.

It’s all an illusion.

Which isn’t to say that Evan Rachel – and new hubs Jamie Bell, rocking the skinny jeans – don’t look cute here; just that you should never lose sight of the fact that the images you see of red carpets and magazine spreads are highly calculated and put together by a team of designers, stylists, publicists and photographers. This is at least partially why we like the “On the Street” posts. Sure, they’re often as calculated as a Vogue cover, but it does allow you to see behind the curtain a little. When she’s on the red carpet, she’s a glorious picture of perfection; but when she’s not done up by makeup artists and given ten-thousand-dollar gowns to wear, she’s just a pretty girl in a pair of jeans, no different from dozens of other girls you’d see every day.

And an awesome Cat Stevens bag.

      • schadenfreudelicious

Teaser and the Firecat album art,  want!

        • miagain

My words exactly… except at first I thought it was Tea for the Tillerman…. silly silly girl!!

          • schadenfreudelicious

Wild World still gives me chills :)

        • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

I have that album. I now feel old…

          • schadenfreudelicious

i have it too, i’ll join you ;)

          • Isadora Paiva

I’m 19 and I have it too. Evan Rachel Wood is very young as well. Good music lasts.

          • littlemac8

I have that album and I AM old!!

      • mjude

thanks for pointing that out.  i had to go back to look.  how i loved his music.

      • Sobaika

I covet that bag. Girl has got good taste.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

“no different from dozens of other girls you’d see every day.”  Except she’s married to Jamie Bell.  Sigh.

      • kimmeister

I had no idea they were even an item!  Definitely an upgrade from Marilyn Manson.

    • decormaven

Interesting handbag; almost looks like an old 45-rpm travel case. Nice way to repurpose album art.

        Love that Cat Stevens “bag.”

      • Anathema_Device

I have an awesome bag made from the cover of the Cars first album. It has the album cover on one side and LP on the other, but it is square. The woman who made it isn’t in business anymore and none of the new ones I see are as cool. But it is a good DIY project, if you’re the crafty sort. Also, these are amazing looking purses and ereader covers made from old book covers: http://rokkihandbags.com/book-clutches/

        • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i saw some very similar bags at a craft faire in the sf bay area last july!  too bad i didn’t pick up a business card.  they were awesome.

I’d say that anyone who can make grunge look so good is not a mere mortal.

      • l_c_ann

        Grunge?

More like a large % of North America in fall.  Everything is clean and well kept (shoes could use a bit of polish, but most can use more polish than they are getting.)

        • teensmom99

I said grunge because the t-shirt is so “big t-shirt with masculine logo” and the shirt/jacket is lumberjacky but I think we’re potato potahto here–I’m willing to go with N. America in the fall.

    • dickylarue

Are you guys sure she wasn’t going as Macauley Culkin for Halloween?

      • charlotte

Or as the lovechild of Nicole Kidman and Chloe Sevigny?

    • Hermione_Granger

That shirt is from Target! I have it!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XGJXGBSEFRDVYV6I5DQ5E5WBWU Kittkat

Me too! We have the same shirt as a celebrity!

    • CozyCat

      She looks happy.

      • lovelyivy

The happy glow looks wonderful on her.

it looks as though she has pink in her hair…?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

      Bless you boys.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Teaser and the Firecat!!!!

    • http://www.epilonicast.net/theydontknow epilonious

Girls with boy names, boys with girl names, getting all sorts of confused.

      I think I’m having a past-30 legitimate “Get off my lawn” reaction…

      • Winter_White

A comedienne used to joke that the main reason to have children before you hit 30 is this:  because after 30, for every name you can think of for your baby, you HATE someone by that name!

    • AutumnInNY

Love these “girl/guy on the street” features. Cool to see these men and women looking like the rest of us mere mortals sans the team of magicians that transform them for the red carpet.

    • Pants_are_a_must

I love how Bell’s outfit is a lot more calculated than hers, and she’s the one in flannel and a rock t-shirt. It makes the inner gender studies student in me happy.

    • minnye

Sure, she’s got a hot career and cute hubs but I am most jealous that she’s walking around in the warm sunshine…. haven’t seen the sun here in the rust belt for at least a week.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

      I love it.

I’m also jealous she married Billy Elliott.

    • kschwarting

Maybe I just have “Revenge” on the brain, but when I saw the thumbnail I thought she was Jennifer Jason Leigh.

    • http://magnetgirl.tumblr.com Anika

      They are so adorable.

    • Mary229

Very true and wise advice, guys.  Still though, she is pretty darn adorable here.   Her skin looks absolutely lovely, doesn’t it?

      • JillSpill

That’s the thing that I noticed the most – her skin is still absolutely PERFECT, red carpet or not.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She may look like an extra on My Name is Earl, but her incredible skin still gives her away. She looks comfy, normal-cute, and happy with her husband. You go, ERW.

    • siriuslover

her hair looks pinkish and her outfit is a throwback from 1993.

    • prettybigkitty

From the thumbnail in the first picture I thought she was carrying boxed wine. Just for a second.  It made me love her even more.

      • Billie_Dawn

Me too. I got so excited, in a “Celebrities, they’re just like us!” way. Alas, it was not to be :-(

        • meowing

Ah, but it’s Cat Stevens, so all is well.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

      Jamie Bell is taken??? Noooooo

    • sk8tfan

I thought it was Owen Wilson in the first photo when I just saw it as a thumbnail. Still-two ridiculously rich, talented kids slumming it in LA.

    • SapphoPoet

My friend had that exact same Harley shirt when we were in college.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=611638 Jessica Brams-Miller

She looks super happy.  It’s kinda neat.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

I remember when grunge was actually grungy, not designer. *Sigh*

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

at first i thought those were buddhist prayer beads, but then i noticed they have the right number of beads for a rosary.  just curious.  in any case, she looks like her prayers have been answered.

    • fanneydg

She looks like one of the Hansons.

    • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

      Kurt Cobain realness.

    • StillGary

I instantly thought of the Portlandia (“where the 90s never left”) song and smiiiiiiled. She looks happy and pretty — good for her!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I don’tt know that I see dozens of girls who look like this every day.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Wow. This looks like something I might have worn in HS or college in the mid 90s. Admittedly the low period in my sartorial past.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

I’m amused that we are rocking the same awkward hair cut. Evan did you cut your hair by yourself too?

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

      Love her smile!

Ergo, if I could hire a team of stylists, photographers, make-up artists, and publicists, I could be a celebrity too.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I really missed her and her red carpet appearances.

    • H3ff

I enjoy that both she and her husband are dressed stereotypically “gay”. They look happy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/iris.liu4 Iris Liu

Yep. We invest far too much time worshipping celebrities instead of simply seeing them as other (albeit rich as hell) people.
