Elizabeth Banks Gets the Boot

Posted on November 05, 2012

Oh, Lizzy. What happened, hon? You’re so good at putting together (or paying the right people to put together) sassy little outfits for you, but this just looks awkward as hell:

Elizabeth Banks attends The Breeders’ Cup World Championships in Arcadia, California.

The dress is cute and the necklace makes a nice statement. We love the belt. But GIRL. Those BOOTS. What were you thinking? They might look cute with a pair of skinny jeans tucked into them and this dress might work with a pair of flat boots, but this particular pair simply doesn’t go with this dress. They’re giving you duck feet. Not super-crazy about the men’s watch here either. It might have worked except you already look like you raided some guy’s closet for the boots.

Yikes. I didn’t really look at her feet, until I saw your comment about the boots. Those are pretty bad. It’s too bad, because I really love this look.

  • hughman

She looks like an exhausted Soccer Mom.

  • charlotte

Ol’ Lizzie helped and cleaned out the barn before attending The Breeder’s Cup World Championships, fellas!

  • MissMariRose

Maybe she had to change into those boots to help clean out the stalls and then somebody came along and stole her Louboutins and then there was nothing else she could do but walk the red carpet in horse stall cleaning boots because she’s a giver, TLo!

Well, I, for one, thank you Elizabeth Banks for thinking of the horses!

I like this look, but against that background…a little dizzying! The dress looks really nice on her.
Utterly off topic, but I like the ‘red’ carpet colors (have I not noticed them before?)

  • NC_Meg

I love everything she’s wearing, just not all together.

  • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

Looks like an Escher print gone bad….and somehow frumpy…and that is hard to do on her.

Dudes, she was attending the Breeders’ Cup.  Maybe she had some stables to attend while watching her favorite pony.  I don’t think the boots look that bad.

  • Mike Owens

It’s a hodge-podge of disparate pieces from several different outfits. Oy.

  • l_c_ann

Change the colors of the houndstooth to crimson and gray (U Alabama colors) and your could sell that dress by the hundreds to rich Crimson Tide fans.
(That wouldn’t make it any prettier, but it would give it a context into which to fit. )

    • Adriana_Paula

Or to rabid Cougar fans, over here in eastern Washington!

  • ChiliP

Oh dear. Those boots were not the way to go. Maybe it’s the angle? Actually, I can’t they look good from any angle with this dress.

Speaking of the dress, it looks very Anthropologie, does it not? Pair it with a sweater with a big honkin (or hootin?) owl on it, and it would be a look straight from their catalog. Note that I say this as an Antho fan, but sometimes the way they style their outfits makes me twitchy.

  • Jangle57

Maybe she had to muck out the stables afterwards…

  • frannyprof

I actually like the boots! Maybe because they go with the event? She thought she would be mucking around horses?

  • Aly Light

Seriously…? I quite like it. The jewelry, the print, and the boots are mildly Western, without making her look like she walked off the set of a cowboy movie. I think it goes together, and she looks comfortable and attractive. What more can you ask for?

  • VicksieDo

This is something I would actually wear, so now I has a sad.

  • fringebenefit

Awful dress. It’s like an ad for a weight loss plan where the woman wears her old size 20 dress and says,”I’ve lost 10 dress sizes!”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_N75LLUHGJEGCGJ3HZAXEB3MBJI Deen

Maybe she was expecting really REALLY deep puddles on the red…erm… purple carpet?

  • MilaXX

Even fancy cowboy boots would have looked better, although a bit Country music awards. Those boots however, are just tragic.

  • marilyn

I don’t like the boots the necklace, or the dress.  The bold pattern in the dress is too distracting being laid out smoothly on the top, then gathered in the skirt.  That makes it look like two differnt, bold, jarring prints put together in 1 dress. It almost makes my eyes hurt to look at the dress.  The necklace is invisible, and does not go with either the dress or the boots.  The boots are outdoorsy and casual.  None of this goes together.   Was she grabbing stuff out of the back of the closet to wear?  Is she going mountainclimbing after this event, with no time to change?   Yikes.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

      Yes!  This exactly!

  • Anathema_Device

She looks like she was trying to copy a look from the Sundance catalog but didn’t quite pull it off.

  • kikisayshi

I don’t think this is her dress at all. From the neck up she looks great, and from the neck down it’s a completely different person. I could even see the boots working with this dress on someone who does hobo-chic much better than Ms. Lizzie. Not trying to hate, just sayin’.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Love the dress and love the necklace. Not sure about the belt, and HATE the boots. And the watch doesn’t bother me.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

    holy mess of scrolldown fugliness!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

All she’s missing is a Stetson.  Cowgirl, no.

  • mhleta

The boots are a total disconnect to the rest of the outfit. It’s like putting ketchup on a cupcake.

    • Adriana_Paula

      Well said!

    • DeborahJozayt

      Mmmmmm. Cupcakes…..

  • jw_ny

seems too rodeo-ish…not right for the breeders cup.

  • RoxieRider

I almost really love this look. I think if she’d worn her hair a bit blown out and country-fied it might have tied the look together a bit more.

  • jmorino08

I saw her being interviewed at whatever horse racing thing she was attending and from the shoulders up, thought she looked great. Didn’t get to see the rest of the outfit, though. The dress is cute, but looks a little droopy. And those boots with that outfit are giving me pains.

  • Verascity

That’s funny — except for the boots, I think this looks much better than the WERQ on the previous page.

  • crash1212

I love everything – but the boots – I don’t mind the concept of boot with this look, just not THOSE boots. Otherwise – CUTE!

  • Snailstsichr

I don’t like the belt. The white part angles down and makes the top of the dress look saggy.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Not feeling those boots at all.  Otherwise a cute look.

  • kimmeister

Aw man, and everything above the shins was working so well!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

No. That dress is just awful. That huge hound’s tooth check cannot be redeemed.

  • AuntieAnonny

I was so excited to see what this dress looked like, undo!

Also, my god, she looks exactly like a Breck Girl from the neck up.

  • annrr

Not digging the Stella and Dot necklace as a red carpet piece.  I let my friend have a Stella and Dot party at my house a year ago and that necklace was the cover piece.  Having said that, I would have shortened it a bit to fit the neckline better. Also the dress is summer and the boots fall, I think a boots and dress look requires sleeves to work so you are in the same season. Lastly here roots are killing me.

  • quiltrx

I LOVE the dress, but everything else makes my stomach hurt.

  • RzYoung

    Yeuch!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sarah.souffriau Sarah Souffriau

Dafuq’s up with those boots?  All she needed to not put those on, was some common sense. Yikes. Cute dress and nice necklace though.

  • Judy_J

Talk about your bad choices in footwear…..!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

I think it’s cute…for Coachella. Not a good look for the red carpet, though.

  • decormaven

Trying to be kind, as she has such a pleasing countenance. However, that dress is apropos of nothing, and the boots are sad. Try another stylist, dear; you’re too fine for such dreck.

  • Regina Harrison

Ha, I was watching the Breeders Cup coverage and wondered if you guys would comment on her outfit!  I will say about the boots, she was in fact walking about on the track, which is deep sandy loam, to present the trophy to the winner of the Turf Sprint (the excellent filly Mizdirection, beating the boys!).  So there was a practical reason for her to be wearing footwear like that, though she absolutely should have matched her outfit better to them.  And the necklace against the print is awful, though each is fine on its own.

  • LeifBallard

Totally looks frumptasitc with those boots!! and I think i would also pair with a different belt.  Love the print though!

  • oohsparkley!

I think the boots would have looked better if the dress was knee-length.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Other than her hair and makeup (which are very nice), there is nothing about this outfit I like.  The dress looks about 2 sizes too big, and the belt does nothing to add to the outfit.  Dislike the necklace with that dress, and those boots are a crime against fashion!

  • littlemac8

Personal gripe:  I HATE with a burning passion when the tongue of the belt flops over like that.

  • Sing4yursupper

That dress reminds me of a rendition of an Escher print, and a bad rendition at that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Louise-Bryan/1177213326 Louise Bryan

The boots definitely caught my eye, and not in a good way, at all.  Very pretty dress, very odd accessories.
