Elijah Wood at “The Hobbit’ Premiere

Posted on November 28, 2012

Mr. Frodo looks adorable here.

Elijah Wood at the world premiere of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ in Wellington, New Zealand.

We wonder if it must be weird to be on a red carpet in Wellington, stepping out of a Bag End mockup after all this time – and he’s only a minor supporting player.

Anyway, we like the idea behind this look, if not the actual execution of it. He’s one of those rare men who can get away with that Amish, buttoned-up-shirt/no-tie look. The problem, as we see it, is that it all looks kind of cheap and poorly fitted; from the suit to the shirt to the shoes. If everything looked a bit more polished and pressed, we’d have liked this a lot. As it is, it’s a good idea, poorly rendered.

But the shades are nice.

If the suit fabric was more luxurious, the shoes polished and the face clean shaven the look would be fine for the red carpet.

I met him once and he was super, super nice and SO TINY I could hardly believe it. Like, obviously he’s a small dude, but in person it’s really pretty crazy.

Anyway, he looks great here and I love the shades.

    • SneakyKitty

I just wanna put him in my pocket and carry him around with me all day.  Adorable.

    • siriuslover

YES! That suit is so wrinkly it’s embarrassing.

I guess it’s a linen or linen-blend. Probably quite comfy but looks a bit shit.

    • kimmeister

I’m so ready for this buttoning-all-the-way-up thing to fade away.

    • Deb_Lynn

Also, why no belt? i thought it was a standard for suit-wearing?

      • hyperionic

Not really, it can be quite fashionable to not wear a belt, and I think it would detract from his look here. Most of the guys on this site wearing a suit don’t wear belts.

        • Deb_Lynn

Thank you! See, I’ve got limited man style knowledge, so i wasn’t whining, just wondering. And I have noticed a lot of the men on here have no belt, it confused me to no end. Thanks for clearing it up!

I always notice here on TLo that the men NEVER wear belts with their suits, and I am always surprised.  I think they look unfinished without them.

    • Mike Owens

He’s such a cutie I’m willing to cut him all kinds of slack!

    • Judy_J

He does look somewhat rumpled, but cute as a bug just the same.

Sansabelt pants .  What’s with this style?  Just no.

Loving the Simon Tam sunglasses. (Just did a Firefly rewatch, sorry.)

Holy crap, when is he going to start aging?

      • Derek_anny

About a year ago.  I noticed it in the commercials for his show.  So now he looks like he might be 19.  He’s practically typecast for Dorian Gray.

I saw Elijah Wood in a restaurant a few years ago, and before I realized who he was, my first thought was, “Wow, that’s a really well dressed child.”

Here, I thought he was Ken Watanabe at first.

Maybe my brain just has trouble placing Elijah Wood, as an overall rule.

    • MrsMaxPower

I just want to hike up his pants so they’re somewhere near his waistline

    • Imasewsure

Kind of a weird little dandy look but I like it. Super dig the shades

love him more than is probably considered healthy.

He’ll always be Wilfred’s best friend to me.

      • Toto Maya

I love Wilfred, but it was so weird the first episode to watch Frodo desperately trying to commit suicide. It was kind of hilarious actually. Poor Frodo.

    • RocknRollmom

Stop with the unpolished scruffy shoes already!!!  I will give him the wrinkled suit as it may be linen.  And as the sales woman told me when I bought my first linen suit–”If they think you are just wrinkled, they are OBVIOUSLY people you don’t really want to know!”  I have stuck with that as I love linen.  Mr. Wood is adorable though he is what now in his 30′s and I suspect that he hates that word.  Saw him at a White Stripes concert a few years ago.  He is adorable and tiny.  Again, neither are words one likely wants to hear when a grown man.

I will always find that style of sunglasses incredibly revolting.

No idea why. I just hate it.

Actually I think he looks all-around pretty silly in this.

He just came out of a Hobbithole, of course his suit is wrinkled.

Skip Frodo. Check out Thorin (Richard Armitage) for some real sartorial splendor.

It’s summer in NZ. If it was particularly hot and muggy that day, I would completely forgive his wrinkles. There’s not a lot you can do with a suit on a hot and muggy day.

Off the subject of EW and onto the trailer…I still cannot get over that they cast Richard Armitage as Thorin. Thorin Oakenshield, played by 6 feet, two inches of hotness. And it does not appear to be a miscasting at all. (Though frankly, they could cast RA as one of the trolls and I would still be happy to see him.) Oh, that voice. Mmmm, baritone.

It was hot but windy. It’s always windy in Wellington.

I read The Hobbit when I was nine years old and I have been an unapologetic nerd ever since. I am too excited to even crush on Elijah here. Well…mmm, but still! AHHHH.

      I’ll calm down now.

    • Zippypie

At least he doesn’t have his furry feet on.  He looks cute as hell coming out of his Hobbithole.

Judging by the stitching, it looks like a bespoke suit. Maybe it’s wrinkled because, hello! he was in a hobbit hole!  LOL

    • librarygrrl64

I feel like the only way the buttoned-up/no-tie look works is if the shirt ISN’T white. Another solid color, or a pattern, yes. But this doesn’t work for me. It just looks like he forgot something.

    • http://twitter.com/OhFaerieNuff Laurie S. Neilsen

I’m sorry. He’s adorable, but when he dresses like this, I can only see him as the creepy cannibal in Sin City.

    • crash1212

      He bugs. Nice shades.

    • Tamara Hogan

      Not feeling it. At all.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Minor supporting role, but when it comes to Lord of the Rings, HUGE face to render the press tour. And he seems genuinely excited about it too, which is nice.

The poorly rendered outfit only serves to show his lack of care, bless his eternally hipster heart. The shades are awesome.

    • decormaven

Something about the shades he’s wearing reminds me of Gary Oldman in Dracula. Do wish he could have at least gotten his shoes shined for the RC.

    • http://twitter.com/enuma enuma

The glasses and creepy smile make him look like he’s about to eat a hooker to ingest her soul, which gives all those meals that hobbits eat a creepy new undertone.

    • MilaXX

      Sloppy

    • MadLori

Why no love for the actual star of the film, Martin Freeman?  He looked fantastic on the red carpet.

    • guest2visits

I actually like this much better than the dreary hipster shirts and skinny pants that he’s been wearing. Cute.
Or maybe it’s the smiley-face.. (see it with his shades?)

    • bitterk

Love the clothes.  Is it me or are the shoes in need of a little polish?
