Beautifully done.

Is it us, or has the cultural “moment” for Downton Abbey passed? It doesn’t seem like people are as excited about the show as they were a year ago. Regardless of what the rest of the world thinks, we’re looking forward to its return to our televisual shores in January.

But please, kittens: no spoilers for the third season in the comments section.

Hello, Dan Stevens. I’m having some naughty thoughts about him and that cane…

    • kschwarting

He’s on Broadway right now…I am thinking I might need to come to NYC for that.

      • Amelia Logan

I bet he’s even better on broadway than in downton.

    • Heather

Yes. I can think of many ways he and I might put that cane to use.

      • Gayer Than Thou

He certainly does look like he knows how naughty I’ve been, and how badly I need to be punished for it.

    • JosephLamour

Why does he look SO HOT in costume, and normal everywhere else?

  • sarahmichelef

Dan Stevens doesn’t do it for me as Cousin Matthew but HOLY SHEEEIT he is smolderingly hot here. And I could not love Brendan Coyle or Jim Carter more.
(And now I refuse to read the rest of the comments because we still have one DVD of season 2 to watch.)

    • Leah Elzinga

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Brendan Coyle.  I think it’s the voice; totally gives me shivers 😉

      • Billie_Dawn

Did you ever see the BBC miniseries “North and South”? You absolutely must. Brendan Coyle is wonderful in it, and the show itself is so well done.

        • Sarah Grizzle

        • librarygrrl64

Co-signing every single word of that. xxxooo

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I’m really glad I’m not the only one.

  • facebook-683312424

I dunno, I’m SUPER excited about it. :)  I bet as December comes to a close, the hype will build up again.  It’s still a couple months away.

  • Qitkat

  • Unity O

Love!  Cannot wait for season 3.

  • Sobaika

I think because the second season wasn’t necessarily the best the fervor has died down a bit. Even still, I’ll be watching in January.

  • Tadiana

They all look magnificent, except for Ed Speleers (? – I don’t remember him from the previous seasons), who looks like he’s playing dress-up.  Dan Stevens – wow. *fans self vigorously*

    • Annie Leung

Ed Speleers is a new character in season 3 😀

I agree completely, Dan Stevens looks absolutely smashing!

  • ringthing

Lovely all around, esp. Dan Stevens. I need a Victorian fainting couch on which to swoon.

  • PastryGoddess

Loved all of the pics except the one with Allen and the hand on the hip.

    • kristel

I agree completely – the rest look so natural in these clothes, but he just looks incredibly awkward.

      • lrhg

To be fair, he did get stuck in what looks like very fancy bath robe.

All the rest look great. I’m so glad they used (almost) all the main male cast members instead of just the young/sexy ones like I have seen other spreads do.

        • kristel

True enough. He just looks so uneasy. Of course, his character would probably be equally uneasy in many of these get-ups, certainly the fancy bathrobe!

          • Gayer Than Thou

He should certainly take off that bathrobe.  For starters…

    • Sara L.

I think he looks like Jim Carrey in that picture. Very odd.

  • Annie Leung

I love the Ralph Lauren that Rob/Thomas is wearing. Fabulous!

    • foodycatAlicia

That tartan coat! Stunning. The rest is all nice but I’m not really feeling it. Maybe because I’ve never watched the show I can’t really get into whether they are channeling their screen personas.

      • Annie Leung

The only ones who are really channeling their onscreen personas are Hugh Bonneville and Jim Carter, at least in my point of view. I’ve never seen Dan Stevens give anyone that look on the show (although I kind of wish he would).

      • Amelia Logan

Honestly it took me a while to recognize a lot of them that’s how little personality they’re bringing into it.

  • JanieS

Cousin Matthew looks like he’s about to ask me if I’ve been a naughty little girl.

  • random_poster

Thank goodness they didn’t use Terry Richardson as the photographer.  I guess he’s only on-call when they need the perv shots.

    • Heather

Exactly. And check it out: these are actually SMOKING SEXY and they all actually have their clothes ON.

(Tho – I’m not sure how much work Terry Richardson does for non-US publications. Other countries have better taste.)

  • Tatiana Luján

Oh, they all look so handsome!

  • shirab

Canes appear as a prop in six out of the eight photos. That feels like a bit much.

  • Tanya Wade

Why yes, Mr. Bates, I’d love to sit on your knee for a spell….carry on!

  • David Verdun

Whaddya mean,”Here’s some pretty for you, *gals*?!”  Harumpf!

    • Tom and Lorenzo

Don’t worry. You’re one of the gals.

  • tylka5

I cannot wait for DA to start back in January.  I’ve deliberately hidden the facebook page so I don’t have any spoilers to avoid.  Such a great show!

    • MajorBedhead

Oh, but if you hadn’t hidden the page, you could have watched season 3! They’ve been posting links to it.

      • SRQkitten

        Full episodes? srq

  • Isabel

    Where is Cousin Edith’s beau?

  • Matt Bailer

Beautiful men, beautiful clothes, beautiful pics.  But UGH.  Just shut up already, Bates.

  • Winter_White

What a treat!  (Ed Speleers?  Looking forward to meeting you in S3, pretty one.)

  • rloliveira

I can’t wait for Downton Abbey!

  • MajorBedhead

    Oh, Matthew. You look divine.

The former chauffeur looks silly and the rest of them look great.

No spoilers but season 3 is awesome.

    • Isabel

      Lady Sybil’s hubby looks fine.

  • C.

Without spoilers, I think some people don’t think the tone of the show sustains itself well, which might of course lead to it being less culturally relevant.  But the creative of it is gorgeous and I hope that does hang around for a while (Ralph Lauren’s last winter collection was all DA and I adored it) – these pictures prove that the idea of luxury and glamor is still, ah, smoldering hot.  The boys can put the ritz on me anytime!

    • not_Bridget

Ralph Lauren is now the sponsor of Masterpiece, which is no longer split into Classic, Mystery & Contemporary.  Series 3 of Downton begins on PBS on December 4th.

I had definite problems with the writing in Series 2. But production values in that narrow little world have always been good & most of the actors do their best with what they’re given.

  • atticus229

I’m not sure about the love for DA passing as I’m tremendously excited for it’s return, but am a bit anxious about Shirley Mc in the show.  I think it may Americanize it too much and lose that elegance

    • Corsetmaker

      Don’t be anxious.

  • NurseEllen

This helped my day tremendously.  Thanks, TLo.

  • AuntieAnonny

I think season 3 is the best of the series so far. I wont say anything else, but it’s worth looking forward to.

Anywho, this spread is giving me a Clue vibe, am I alone?

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I see it…I’m sure there’s a Colonel Mustard in there somewhere.

    • tereliz

      Well, it is now.

I still haven’t seen season 2, but I watched all 7 episodes of Season 1 in about 7 hours.

  • Veronika Kaufmann

it hasn’t passed. at least not for me. To understand the present, you must understand the past.

  • Elena

I do think part of the DA craze might have passed, partially because season 2 just wasn’t very good.

It hasn’t passed for me…I am trying not to think about it for now.  It is so sad that we have to wait while UK gets to indulge!

  • marlie

I can’t wait for the season to start!

  • Vera L-

    Dashing. Simply dashing.

  • Jett Galindo

Check out the top hats in this editorial! Any chance this would return as a fashion trend?

  • shopgirl716

    I cannot wait.

  • VicksieDo

No, of course I didn’t just lick my screen where Dan Stevens is….LOL

  • MilaXX

Very nice.  My favs are the plaid jacket that Rob is wearing and the vest that Ed is wearing.

  • Jepham

I can’t wait for season 3 to start! The holidays can be so frantic and I look forward to knowing in Jan I can look forward to quiet Sunday nights with DA.  Most of my friends who have watched the first two seasons are also super excited for the next season to begin.
    Gorgeous pictures!

  • Elizabeth

Fabulous! Thank you for sharing, TLo. My only quibble, they shortchanged the yummy Rob James-Collier by showing too much of the fireplace and not enough of his swoon-inducing face. I swear, that man is so lovely, I can’t bring myself to hate the loathsome Thomas. Instead, I prefer to think of him as merely misunderstood and in need of a supportive shoulder to cry on (mine!).

    • Elizabetta1022

And then would you marry the footman before he passes away?

      • Elizabeth

Poor William. He was such a sweetheart. Yes, if I were Daisy I would’ve done the exact same thing. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when we watched that episode. And, Daisy did connect with William’s father, who seems to have become a type of surrogate father for her. So something good did come from tragedy.

Now if only I could get my hands on a copy of that fabulous chaise lounge in Lord Grantham’s study. I think I lust over that thing more than I lust over the hateful-but-gorgeous Thomas. Sigh.

        • Elizabetta1022

I’m with you, Elizabeth. But what does that say about us? I was just having a conversation with a good friend where we agreed that we’d forego a weekend adventure in favor of a fabulous new chaise lounge. My twenty-year-old self would be appalled.

          • Elizabeth

Ha! Yes, I suppose our age is showing. We’re on a similar wavelength. My hubby and I just gave up a scheduled trip to Napa in order to finish the tile backsplash in our kitchen. Hurmph. I chose glass mosaic tile over wine and relaxation. Pathetic or are we older and wiser?

  • Valeria Rivera

Am I the only one who thinks they look awkward as hell? I just don’t see a single ounce of sex appeal at all.

  • andreawey

I must be weird but I’d like a Lord Grantham and Mr. Bates sanwich with a little Thomas sprinkled in there for spice;)  Damn! I’m hungry!

  • Corsetmaker

What a luscious spread of images. And lovely to see they’ve included some traditional tailors among the fashion houses. Rob James Collier and Brendan Coyle look very appealing :)

  • crash1212

Dan Stevens in Prada gave me lady tingles. And I can’t WAIT for the third season!

  • Judy_J

Thank you so much for posting this!  I must admit, my heart fluttered a bit when I came to that last photo of Brendan Coyle.  I’d love to find him sitting in my study, giving me that very look.  And Dan Stevens….I’d be happy with him as well!

  • Trisha26

I’ll take Hugh & Brendan (so not my usual type – must be their acting!) in their oh so posed poses & wait calmly until January.

  • Contralto

The whole spread is very nice and ahhhh…Brendan.  Sigh.  I can’t wait for season three!

  • nannypoo

Well, I’m as excited as ever. Dan Stevens is a little washed-out looking for my taste, but here in this picture he looks fabulously hot. In fact, they all do. Can’t wait.

  • Sara__B

Thank you, T Lo! You brightened my (so far not very good) day.

  • j_anson

Hmm, some of these are kind of stiff (although I guess that’s part of the look). The one with Bates is just awesome, though.

  • Wrenaria

Hellooo Dan Stevens. Rocking the smolder. The rest of them look great too, but damn.

  • Paola Thomas

OK no spoilers, but suffice it to say that this season is SO much better than the hackneyed melodrama of season two, Shirley Maclaine is a great addition, though doesn’t appear enough. The interplay between her and Maggie Smith is of course fabulous. And I confidently predict all sorts of acting awards- the chaps above, and the gals, have done AMAZING work this season. You have a treat in store.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Bates does nothing for me on the show, but he certainly is working it here…..

  • Shawn EH

The moment will be reinvigorated with the 1920s. C’mon, Crawley flappers? What’s not to love?

  • Alloy Jane

I’m still excited for it.  I think the “moment” has lost steam because Season 2 was a bit silly, plus too few episodes, and then the space between seasons on top of that.  It’s only eight shows as opposed to 12/13.  I think it’ll pick up again, especially since good ol’ Shirley is coming on as American Grandma.  Cannot wait!

  • AnnPopovic

Dan Stevens looks like Carey Elweys; a sinister version of Wesley. ‘As you wish’, indeed…

  • frannyprof

I think we’re all diverted by the election whoop-dee-do. Once it’s over (Go, Obama!), and the holidays hit, we’ll be back in the mood for some DA. Bring on the promos!

  • librarygrrl64

I was disappointed in the unevenness of season two, writing-wise, and I have major concerns about Shirley coming on board. I sense that she will be chewing scenery like mad just to try and compete with Maggie. It feels like stunt casting to appeal to us Yanks, and it irks me. But I have gigantic crushes on Misters Bonneville and Coyle, so I will be tuning in again.

  • Orange Girl

That Thomas is a pain in the ass, but he sure is goooood lookin’.

  • imakeart

I dunno what it is about Brendan Coyle, but I think he’s very sexy, and this shot of him nails it for me.  And am I just forgetful because it’s been so long, or who is Alfred Nugent?

  • ojosazules

The McQueen vest is very interesting. I wish men would actually wear scarves like the one in the first photograph- luscious with that black wool.

  • Molly Harrington ⚓

STOP IT. I can’t with this. Downton is absolutely still having a cultural moment in my book.  January cannot come fast enough! These men all look absolutely fantastic….especially Dan Stevens. Whoa now.

  • Jaime

The only thing I’m going to say about S3 is that the writers have trimmed some of the crap and there’s not nearly as many conveniences in the plot as there used to be (you know how they drive up anxiety and expectations about various events and threats and never follow through with it), which is what drove me batty about the previous two, and which is why I was gobsmacked when they [spoilers, sweetie!] and I’m gonna shut up now and admire the lovely costumes and wait impatiently for the season to air here.

  • WittyCism

I swoon!!  I sigh!!  Thank you, TLo, for different kind of pretty-for-the-day. Dan Stevens gave me butterflies, hahaha!!

  • decormaven

Dan Stevens, FTW! Another anxious Downton Abbey viewer here; it will definitely be appointment TV.

  • Howard

with the exception of one or two these are some homely looking guys they have little to no sex appeal …….  the clothes do nothing for me men’s wear from this period in english history is uninspiring….. am bored to death with black an white  some color would have made all the difference  in this photo shoot

  • ellabob

    Looking forward to season 3!!

  • Elizabetta1022

Now I understand why Anna is working so hard to release Mr. Bates from prison! Dan Stevens, though–wow.

  • Paula Pertile

Smashing. Heart flutters for Mr. Bates. And the Prada coat on Matthew.
I’m very much looking forward to Season 3. Trying to make do with Upstairs Downstairs in the meantime.

  • GorgeousThings

I don’t think it’s passed, it’s just hibernating. We’ll see how the wedding season does. And all I have to say is
    Shirley Fucking Maclaine!!!!!

  • Robert_LP

I would marry Dan Stevens in a heartbeat!!

  • Vera

    Dan Stevens *Swoons*

  • DesertDweller79

This is great.  Thanks, TLo!  Brendan Coyle looks so good here.  And, wow, Dan Stevens!  He doesn’t really do it for me on the show, but maybe he would if he looked like this.

  • Carleenml

has the cultural moment passed???? I work in a public library. The hold list for season three got heated the second we were able to put in a pre-order for the dvds. Free John Bates t-shirts are all the rage. The moment is alive and well. The Encore series Titanic is keeping me occupied until January.

  • formerlyAnon

Hugh Bonneville looks adorable here, too bad the previews are forecasting that he reprises his season 2 turn as petulant, whiny and miserable.  Brendan Coyle’s got “it” though, head & shoulders above the rest of the cast.

Dan Stevens’ role last season as Chief Scenery Chewer still casts a pall over his smouldering, here.

  • MichaelStrangeways

So far as I’ve seen, Series Three is better than Series Two. And, Shirley is a hoot…

  • Jill Staniszewski

woof!!!!!! I love a man in a tuxedo!

  • melanie0866

I hate everyone in the UK right now because they get to watch DA and I don’t.

  • 2ranma75

Mr Carson’s hair is so cute.
