CMA Awards Red Carpet

Posted on November 02, 2012

Yeehaw, bitches! It was the 46th annual CMA Awards in Nashville, Tennessee and the ladyfolk got themselves all gussied up! Hit it, ladyfolk!

Carrie Underwood in Reem Acra

It’s … okay. Actually, it’s kind of pretty (although that bodice is way overworked), but we’re disappointed to see her in another neutral with gold accents.

Hayden Panettiere in Georges Chakra Couture

It’s also just okay. We like the pale green color, but we don’t like the darker green accessories paired with it. She could’ve used a dress with a more defined waist. The shape of this thing is not her best friend.

Kellie Pickler in Pamella Roland

The color’s beautiful on her. It’s a bit tight in the bust and we’re not super-crazy about the shape of the skirt, but it all works for her. We think she should’ve gone a little heavier on the makeup, though. She looks too pale and colorless. We’d have stuck some sapphires on those ear lobes to help frame the face.

Lucy Hale in Moschino

This is kind of mature-looking, but it’s so head-turning and she looks so polished in it that we don’t really mind.

Miranda Lambert in Maria Lucia Hohan

Oh, gurl. That is SO not your dress.

It’s like someone dared her to find the least flattering bustline possible for her figure. And the color, of course, does absolutely nothing for her.

Taylor Swift in Jenny Packham

Credit where it’s due: we can’t stand her, but she looks gorgeous here.

  • Is Kellie Pickler cosplaying Amber Rose?

I dunno. I prefer my country music awards more cliched. Where are my boots and stetsons and fringe and bedazzled denim?

    • Annabelle Archer

She shaved her head in support of a friend with breast cancer. : )

      •  That’s a very kind gesture. I’ve never heard of this woman before, but the combination of the hair, impressive rack and strapless dress made me think of Amber Rose.

        • Stefanos Mantyla

I have. She’s that one who thought Europe was a country and didn’t know the status of France. Hey, if you have one of those youtubing days, you are bound to find out exactly what I am talking about!

        • kimmeister

She was on American Idol a few years ago.

    • marianna_m

I believe she shaved her head in support of a very close friend who’s fighting cancer.

    • merciblahblah

She shaved her head in honor of a friend who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Don’t love her, but I thought it was pretty cool that she did that. I was also amazed at how striking she was when her head was completely shaved.

And as much as I hate to say it, even with my Irrational Loathing of T Swift, that dress on her is GORGEOUS.

      •  I think this may be the best Pickler’s hair has ever looked. She seemed overdyed and fried a lot of the time.

        • BeeBeauNYC

           I agree – I think it’s a fantastic cut. It’s a big change for her, but a refreshing one.

        • H3ff

Definitely. She just looked like a generic blonde in the Carrie Underwood mould before.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

She’s got a bit of an Annie Lennox vibe with her hair shorn. (A high compliment in my book.) Last night I saw the thumbnail and wondered why Annie would be there!

  • Kathy_Marlow

    Taylor Swift: “Of course”

    • That’s exactly what I said when I scrolled down to that photo.

    • Right? Her new CD is called “Red”. What, like she’s gonna wear blue?

    • Courtney St. Julian

My thoughts, exactly! In fact, I’d swear she’s worn that dress before.

    • I don’t think that we can start handing out of courses just because someone has a distinctive style. She looks really nice. And I think she does well with picking dresses that are each interesting and different even though they fit her specific taste.

An “of course” should be limited to people who have a specific taste(less-ness) of constant fail; ie. Lea Michelle, Kat Graham.

      • Kathy_Marlow

I disagree.  Kat Graham wears interesting, different things, many times with bad results.  Taylor, while she does look nice, wears the same kind of dress: sparkly, princessy, twee-ish.  There’s nothing wrong with it, but if you had access to the fashion she does, wouldn’t you explore all your options?

        • Call me Bee

Oh sure.  But Miss Swift is all of what?  20?  She’s living her little girl princess dress fanatsies.  Perhaps her fashion choices will mature and expand as she does.

          • sweetestsith

Beyond that, her audience is still teenaged girls and I think she does an excellent job playing into that demographic. I don’t love her look (at all), but I give her props for selling herself well.

That said, I love this particular dress. It’s really beautiful.

  • greyhoundgirl

I want to send Miranda Lambert to my chiropractor.

    • I know that posture. She is reflexively (is that a word?) hunched over as if it will cover her up some. I have been in that situation, I feel her pain. GIRL. If that’s the gown you got saddled with, you would have been better off just wearing jeans. And firing whoever picked it for you.

      • greyhoundgirl

What I am reacting to is that her head is so far in front of her body.  My neck and upper back ache in sympathy.

    • decormaven

So true. And the way her body is hunched over, you know she is not owning that look. She is so cute; she deserves a more winning look. New stylist, STAT.

  • elemspbee

Is Hayden P sporting a green undie? Or am I seeing color where it’s not there?

    •  I don’t see anything.

    • BrooklynBomber

I hope and pray that’s part of the dress, and not a thong. It has to be if there is anything good and decent left in this world.

  • schadenfreudelicious

that second shot of Carrie is seriously unflattering, hair color and makeup are aging her by a good ten years….Kellie, your boobs are begging you to go up a size….

  • imspinningaround

Having sympathy flashbacks for Miranda Lambert.  She and I both have that broad-shoulders-big-boobs-no-neck build and I was forced to wear a shiny lavender halter bridesmaid dress a few years ago that made me look like a member of the Green Bay Packers linebacker corps in drag.

    • No GB Packer would *ever* drag in MN Vikings’ purple/lavender!!!

      • oohsparkley!

That ugly color is not Vikings purple!

      • Call me Bee

        You’re probably right!  🙂

  • Billie_Dawn

The halter strap makes Miranda Lambert’s shoulders look enormous and her head look tiny.

  • Judy_J

Hayden Panettiere looks like she’s wearing two different dresses….the back of the dress looks like an ice skater’s costume, and appears to be much shorter than the front of the dress.  And Miranda Lambert…..girl!  Square those shoulders and stand up straight!  I’m totally on board with you guys with regard to Taylor Swift.  Can’t stand her, either, but damn, she does look good.  Love that dress.

  • Hayden looks like she borrowed something from Dancing With the Stars. LOVE Lucy Hale’s look.

  • MoHub

Miranda Lambert looks as if she’s hunching her way into osteoporosis territory.

    • Monabel

True, but let us acknowledge the pretty, and colorful, earrings.

  • Annabelle Archer

Please tell me there are more posts coming.  We need to talk about Faith Hill in world’s tightest leather pants. (Though that was on stage not carpet)

It was unusually classy on the RC last night.  Not nearly enough Tennessee Tacky for my loving tastes.  Though most of the men looked like college frat douches in their jeans and baseball caps.  They are pointless to recap unless you want to compare who spent the most time trying to look they didn’t spend any time or thought getting ready.  The hair product and accessories always tell the truth though, amiright?

  • ChiliP

Ok, I think Taylor looks stunning. If she is going to stick to the sweet ladylike ensembles that she tends to favor, this is the way to go. It’s romantic but has some design interest, plus the low cut of bodice is just modest enough to maintain her good-girl persona. I’m surprised to say this, but she’s the best dressed girl of this bunch.

  • Is Taylor Swift ashamed of her height or something? Or just courting scoliosis for the fun of it…

    • Annabelle Archer

I saw her on Ellen not long ago and I made mental note of her atrocious poster.

  • teensmom99

Hayden P is wearing the shoes I imagined would have worked for Christa B. Allen.
But mostly I’d like help in parsing the difference between and “of course” and having your own style and doing it well.  I think Taylor Swift once again looks amazing.  That’s her look and she owns it–and she gets it right 90% of the time.  So for me that’s not an of course.  I realize TLo didn’t say “of course” here but some commenters did.

  • SistaT

Carrie Underwood looks 60 years old and her foundation is at least 3.5 shades lighter than her actual skin.  And Miranda looks exactly how my Barbie doll looked when I would shove her head down on her neck.  That gown makes her look like she has barely any neck at all and gives her linebacker shoulders.

    • Introspective

this is hilarious, because i used to do the same thing to my barbies!!!! i forgot about that until you brought it up. took me back about 20 years just now. thanks for the laugh.

oh and yeah, Miranda, hiddy. Where are your gays girl????

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Taylor Swift’s dress makes it look like her crotch is shooting out flowers.  But maybe she was aiming for that.

  • granddelusion

    Pickler’s hair is AWESOME!!

  • I don’t know why my irrational hate is so high for Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. Is it the deer in headlights, innocent lil ol me, milk toast thing?

    • Melissa Zade

I think Taylor Swift looks almost always looks plastic-y, and it gives me the creeps.

    • ChiliP

Ever since Carrie came out in support of marriage equality, I can’t hate on her. That’s probably not an easy thing to do in her industry. Plus, she has killer legs.

      • Well if that is the case I am going to put aside my irrational hate and give the girl some support. She does have killer legs. 🙂

  • A B

I think Carrie Underwood looks like she has fungus growing on her torso.  Love the Jenny Packham dress though.

  • I thought for sure you were going to do an “OF COURSE” with either Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift.

  • theblondette

    Classy ladies!

  • TaurusKW

Wow.  Taylor Swift wearing the boldest color on the red carpet.  Isn’t that one of the signs of the apocalypse?

    • alyssa ball

Thankfully it’s just a sign of her new album being entitled Red, which is forcing her to wear red in every appearance to promote it. She’ll go back to colorless, princess dresses in no time!

  • Janet B

Lucy looks lovely but that dress is for an older Lucy.
Taylor is wearing a perfect ‘Taylor Swift’ dress.

  • Dot

I seriously despise Taylor Swift’s hair. Those bangs are just terrible.

    • Introspective

her hair always looks wiggy to me and her blond is washed out. if she had a bolder hair color and a more interesting cut she’d go a long way in cutting down the twee effect…

      • Dot

The color is definitely weird. It almost appears to have a lavender-ish hue or something to me. Between the hair and her skintone, she always appears as one monochromatic column of skin color to me…with red lips of course.

    • onefifteen

I excuse the bangs because she cut them when a stylist for the Vogue cover she did suggested it. I think that’s pretty ballsy, even if I am bored with the twee of the rest of her.

  • TigerLaverada

Miranda Lambert is a pretty lady, but she doesn’t have much of a neck and she has broad shoulders. Whoever styled her should be shot.

  • ralish

I love Lucy Hale’s dress so much. Summoning it to my closet…

  • B_C_J

Miss Underwood’s dress looks like something appropriate for a beauty pageant contestant and the make-up does look a bit heavy and aging.

Ms. Panetierre’s dress I kind of like. She is young. The dress is sassy and fun if a bit short in back. I like the shoes but not the matching purse to go with it.

Ms. Pickler looks  washed out. Short hair and a pale dress call for a little more drama on the face. The dress is fine if a bit predictable and therefore boring.

Ms. Hale looks a bit matronly in her dress but the bright lips give the look a bit of oomph which is much needed.

I do not object to the color of Ms. Lambert’s dress although both the style and the fit are questionable.  Her shoulders are a bit too broad for this look and the fit of the bodice is odd. I am not sure if I am seeing part of the understructure right at the waistline and it looks perilously low around the bust.

Ms. Taylor’s dress is very pretty.  Then again she has a model’s body and that is a tremendous advantage. I think her make-up is a bit caked on and she looks ten years older than what she is.  The bangs are also a bit long for my taste.

  • Please tell me that this dress was not what Miranda Lambert bragged was “…so awesome and I know it will be in a museum one day, so I have to be careful with it. It’s the most awesome thing I’m ever going to wear.”

  • krelnick

I think Taylor’s dressed has contracted the pox…

  • SophiaPehawkins

I feel like I’ve seen that Jenny Packham dress before. Also, Lucy Hale does look mature and maybe it’s the angle of that picture, but it makes her bottom look wide.

Miranda Lambert looks like she’s one deep breath away from giving those seams a break, literally.

  • lambert: worst colour-choice ever!
    swift looks stunning.

  • Joan Roseman

Dear ones, I am coming late to the Taylor Swift Bash.  I so want  to enter into all your feelings but please enlighten me — why should I dislike her?  I mean aside from the revolving door of boyfriends and the breakup songs and the AutoTuning and all, she actually does write some good songs (even if she doesn’t sing them so well) and she looks great in clothes.  So is there some other reason why this 67 year old should not enjoy the occasional viewing of “Mean?”

    • Anathema_Device

People are sick of her overly sweet schtick and some of the other things you mention. I don’t mind her though. I like that she writes songs (with a partner, it must be noted) and hasn’t slutted it up in an attempt to distance herself from her success as a teen performer.

    • Laylalola

I personally don’t understand why she’s not understood to be the Mean Girl she is — she’s extraordinarly nasty toward especially women/girls/competitors in her songs. I also am no fan of how she uses the fame/name of anyone she can to ladder-climb (it’s a tactic really very much akin to how Ann Coulter used to continually grab headlines by picking someone famous, anyone, and deciding to drop their name or otherwise piggyback some argument of hers on their fame). And then there’s the fact that it’s all about living for the boy and fairy tale white knight fantasies, according to Taylor, which personally revolts me to such a degree that I can’t think rationally about her, I don’t even understand how such a post-post-feminist personality can exist in this day and age.

      • Joan Roseman

Wow!  As I said, I only have listened to some songs and looked at some dresses.  Still I don’t think I have heard her claim to be a virgin.  Not the way Britney used to maintain she and Justin were pure.  Taylor just seemed to be girly and to fall for any guy who gave her a glance, which in my day we called being round-heeled,  but as I said, I don’t pretend to know her.  Your description certainly is not attractive…

      • guest2visits

Please don’t compare her to Ann Coulter.  No one is quite that bad.

    • MilaXX

Personally I find her a bit too precious and fake. Like a piece of no fat dessert that’s cloyingly sweet. The whole I’m so innocent and virginal routine while having said revolving door of boyfriends just adds fuel to the fire.

      • schadenfreudelicious

exactly, anyone that counts John Mayer as an ex is likely far from innocent and virginal……

  • I wouldn’t go quite so far as ‘gorgeous’ but I will register my shock that the Virgin Princess isn’t in bridal white.

    • MilaXX

She’s wearing variations of red to tie in with her latest cd also called RED.

  • Eh…. Let’s talk about “Nashville”. Any other kittens obsessed with it?? And was it on this week? I was out begging for candy with the kiddos.

    • MilaXX

I’m watching. It’s not as good of a soap as Dallas or Revenge, but it’s okay. It was on this week, but I haven’t watched yet. I record and watch on the weekends.

    • pookiesmom

I think it’s terrible, but I’m strangely drawn to it. I’m a HUGE fan of Connie Britton and am seriously disappointed that the show isn’t better, because she’s fabulous. But I keep coming back for more, so I guess that’s something.

  • Anathema_Device

Wow. Swift hit it out of the park. Miranda Lambert is a disaster. in addition to darker earrings, Picker should have worn a little darker lipstick. Even just a soft pink would have been better. It would have made her look less Susan Powter-ish.

    • not loving the asylum hairdo on pickler, in addition to the bland makeup. someone replaced her lipstick with a stick of clearasil.

  • MilaXX

Not a bad bunch. Sure Miranda Lambert is wearing a Not Your Dress, but considering some of the get ups she’s worn in the past, this is practically couture for her.

  • I’d rather have my daughter focus her tween celebrity obsession on Ms. Swift than on Katie Perry. She looks beautiful and this dress even looked beautiful sitting down. It’s young and chic – I love it. I might hate her music but at least she’s got the style thing down.
As for the other ones….who told Carrie U. that she should always wear white? Who? I want to talk to them for a minute….

  • kschwarting

OK, T-Swift looks good, but I would really love to see her in another shade of lipstick someday.

  • Laylalola

I think both Adele and Taylor Swift are going to be up for Oscars for original song for a movie this year, and suspect Taylor’s kind of testing the waters/been going to fashion shows/stepping up her red carpet look leading up to whatever she’s going to wear there (but I’m over all her red or red accents for that damn Red album).

  • I wish Tayler Swift would get a haircut. There is just something about that limp poodle hair that I find really off putting. I rather like Hayden’s little flapper dress.

  • Ouch. Miss Swift looks like she put her makeup on with a trowel.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like Hayden’s dress, but I think it should have been longer.

    • i would have liked the dress better without the fringe on the skirt;  the back is beautiful.  also love the color of the shoes, but wish the purse didn’t match so completely.  perhaps a multicolor clutch would have spiced it up.

  • The winners were definitely Lucy Hale, Taylor Swift, and Maybe Carrie Underwood. And I can’t get over how much I like Taylor’s dress!

  • Qitkat

I love Hayden’s dress and emerald accessories. This is where I get really confused. There must be very few outfits that can be rocked with this lovely shade of deep green. I think it’s a perfect choice. Anything else would be ho-hum.

  • BrooklynBomber

    LOVE the  Moschino.

That . . . that. . . that. . . thing Hayden Panettiere is wearing is an atrocity.

  • Miranda Lambert needs to stand-the-fuck-up straight. Looks like her hair is weighing her head down.

  • mmc2315

I’m not 100% sold on the hem, but the Jenny Packham dress is gorgeous.

  • I didn’t watch the awards but I’ve seen pictures of Miranda Lambert wearing a navy blue dress that looked much better on her.

  • Trisha26

I can’t get over that rear view of Hayden’s dress – YIKES!

  • kimmeister

It’s nice to see Hayden not wearing a “hey look, I have boobs!” dress.

Miranda Lambert repeatedly goes to that hairstyle and it is NOT her hairstyle.  She already has a forehead that takes up most of her face, then adding a crazy amount on volume on top means that all her facial features look scrunched down.

  • guest2visits

About Carrie’s; I think the deep plunge in the front should have tapered alot more so she doesn’t look like a rectangle.
Hayden looks like she’s wearing a tall girl’s tunic-top; it doesn’t ft her that well, and the hair style is way off. Sorry.
I felt like both Kellie Pickler and Miranda Lambert have dresses that need heavy hoisting up – they both look good but the dresses are
too small and too low. Taylor and Lucy look pretty spectacular.

  • SpillinTea

Kellie Pickler is giving me Glam Susan Powter…and I LIVE!

  • Overall, the red carpet sampling looks better than most CMA’ RCs. Although whoever dressed Miranda Lambert should never work in fashion again.

  • quiltrx

LOVE Lucy’s dress, even though I have no idea who she is. 🙂

I almost wonder if Miranda is pregnant…that dress is really unflattering, but her figure looks all torqued out of shape, like happens to some preggers ladies.

  • decormaven

Love that black ring Lucy Hale is sporting- her look is the most polished of the bunch. Taylor Swift’s is a close second; wish she had some type of hair adornment, or had swept the hair into an updo.

  • WittyCism

I laughed when I caught the thumbnails of Carrie and Taylor’s gowns on InStyle earlier today.  You can put them together and get flowers and leaves!

  • turtleemily

I can’t stand HayHay, but I like how flapper-esque the dress is.

  • ccm800

I don’t like Taylor’s gown I think the placement of the appliques looks far to chaotic to be “design” for lack of a better word. It;s like a bouquet of gorgeous flowers just not placed well.

  • Diane Kruger makes all these women look like debutantes. My idea of style is not a single one of these ladies. Cookie cutter in the worst way.

  • They all look so amazing! Lucy Hale is one of my favorites

  • Miranda Lambert: Sherri Ann Cabot.
