Cate Blanchett in Giorgio Armani

Posted on November 26, 2012

Cate is serving up 21st Century Katharine Hepburn realness crossed with a little bit of nerd girl chic.

Cate Blanchett makes an appearance at ABC Classic FM‘s studios in Sydney in a Giorgio Armani suit paired with Loeffler Randall shoes.

Giorgio Armani Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Toni Garrn

Loeffler Randall Joanna Metallic Oxfords

And we LOVE that.

We wish the pants were hemmed a little better, but we love the overall look here; especially the glasses and the shoes, both of which really make the look. Chic, comfortable and fabulous. The other Kate would approve.

WANT ALL OF THIS. It’s a little slouchy but I bet I could pull this off for work if I wasn’t really meeting clients. WANT.
ETA: Also, hello 90s. I welcome the return of the 90s’ menswear silhouettes for women.

    • meowing

Oddly, I feel more feminine whilst wearing menswear.  Odd, huh?  Great look, and being tall helps, me thinks.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I feel more feminine whilst wearing menswear too!

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

          You sir, win.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I feel more feminine with my short hair. My long hair just made me feel shlubby because my hair is obstinately against holding a style when let loose.

        • EditKitten

Soooo agree with this. My long hair had no shape, no volume, so I got lazy, which made it worse. I chopped my hair off last year and can’t believe I waited so long … it’s so much more fun. And it makes more “feminine” outfits stand out because of the juxtaposition while making outfits like fabulous Cate’s work even better.

When I need a confidence booster of the kind best achieved by looking kickass I almost always turn towards menswear. I tend to go straight for menswear made for men, but if menswear tailored for people with breasts is coming back into fashion I will be there to greet it with open arms and a ready bank account.

        • joything

One thing I have always appreciated about men’s shirts is, the designers understand that the stomach measurement is often bigger than the bust measurement.

        • formerlyAnon

If I had longer legs, I’d wear mostly menswear-for-women, style be damned. But I can’t really pull of the long, lean look – even when lean, because the long just isn’t there – so I usually restrain myself to when it’s in style. That way I at least have some company in looking like a rather femme, very short, businessman.

    • Nelliebelle1197

       Me too, Gabriella!

  • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

Can I have those shoes when she’s done with them?  LOVE!!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And do they make them in my size too? I would totally wear those.

      • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

If you love the shoes but aren’t into spending $350, Jeffrey Campbell makes a similar pair in three colors (silver, pewter, and gold) for $110. Google “Jeffrey Campbell metallic oxford” and you’ll find the gold ones (didn’t want to get this post stuck in purgatory by linking).

I have the pewter ones and LOVELOVELOVE them. I can’t stop looking at my feet when I have them on.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Thanks so much for the tip!!   I will be checking them out in a moment.

        • Louise Bryan

          Boo!  Not available in 10.5.

  • Tatiana Luján

That has got to be one of the most unflattering panst she’s ever worn.

    • kimmeister

As Michael Kors would say, the crotch is CRAZY!

  • RzYoung

    She’s beyond perfect!

Missed you guys! Hope you had a nice long weekend….you deserve more time off but I won’t let you take any, m’kay?

  • Mismarker

Nerd alert! Cate Blanchett can do no wrong.  This is effing perfect.  Love it all.

  • teensmom99

    LOVE LOVE LOVE.

  • VanessaDK

The shoes absolutely make the look!

  • schadenfreudelicious

love her and she really can do no wrong sartorially speaking… though the pants are a little polterwangy for my taste…..

    • AnneElliot

I agree completely . . . though I had to google “polterwangy.”  Makes perfect sense.

      • BrooklynBomber

Amazing that there’s a word for that.

  • http://twitter.com/AllForUSophia AllForUSophia

She’s just amazing. I’ve got nothing but love!

  • nannypoo

    I love this look.

  • f_yeah_marie

I have to thank T and Lo for changing my outlook on pants.  Looking at photos of celebs or even just checking out strangers around me, I never used to care about properly hemmed pants, but now that’s the first thing I check out if I see someone in jeans/trousers/etc.  In regards to Queen Cate, I had to bask in her glory first before the thought “her pants should be hemmed” even entered my mind.

  • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

Nerds everywhere genuflect at Galadriel in full on geek chic. Perfection. I need those shoes under my holiday tree.

  • merciblahblah

I WANT THOSE SHOES NOW!!!! The end.

    • deathandthestrawberry

      Me too. Sigh.

  • jorinde

don’t really love the shoes and the hair is nothing. otherwise adore her, as always.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Like the suit – hate the shoes.  They look clownish to my eyes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

Nothing better then an Armani suit!!!!

  • BrooklynBomber

At first I thought it said “Kate Blanchett AS Giorgio Armani.” Though, actually, she looks more like Calvin Klein.

    • NinaBoo

I thought she was Ellen DeGeneres.

  • decormaven

Got an ID on the eyewear manufacturer? Interesting specs. She’s doing justice to this look.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

    She looks adorable!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Oh, I love me those shoes.

  • Vaniljekjeks

    *Bows*

  • julnyes

    Love it all!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

God, she’s so wonderful.  What kind of amazes me about her style is that she doesn’t have any one signature “look” per se (i.e. Heidi’s tight-and-shiny, Halle’s super-sexy, Aniston’s sequined dishtowels), but still manages to always look quintessentially Cate every time she steps out even without that signature.

  • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

    UGH, dying.  I LOVE this.

  • Anathema_Device

Pants look a tad baggy and almost jodhpur-like around the hips (which they don’t on the model), but other than that minor quibble, I love everything about this.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Yes, I think they could have gone a size down in the trous.

  • bookish

I think she’d look nicer with her hair a bit more done, but I absolutely love that jacket!

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Love the nerd girl look and the silver oxfords.  Sweet!

  • GorgeousThings

I love it, but the pants look a little big on her, don’t they?

However, to use a phrase that I usually detest, I would wear that. In a heartbeat.

  • Carrieanno

I’m probably just bitter about having woken up yesterday to snow all over the ground, but since it’s summer Down Under why is she wearing a heavy looking fall/winter suit?

  • Introspective

shoes are hot. nerd Cate is hotter. unhemmed pants or not.

  • meowing

Love the look overall but the pants also appear about 2 sizes too big and 1 size too  long.

  • marilyn

BY putting a white shirt under the jacket, she killed all of the style the suit had.  Too bad.

  • beebee10

    I am so in love

  • SewingSiren

    Perfect look for her.

  • bertkeeter

ARMANiI at his best…not like most of the frumpy and contrived the crap he is shoving into retail outlets worldwide these days! Only problem on this look is the fit of the crotch…messy!

  • librarygrrl64

When I see looks like this, which I covet, I wish I weren’t so curvy. In my experience, the head-to-toe menswear look tends to work only when you are a woman whose build is already tall, slender, and somewhat boyish/athletic to begin with.

    • formerlyAnon

Yup. (ETA: Though, when it’s in style, I wear it anyway. That way, at least I’m not the only one wandering about looking like a very short, femme, businessman.)

  • StellaZafella

Cate’s my super hero from another planet…this is her Clark Kent disguise.

    Thanks Cate!

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I adore Cate and I like much of this look, but I think the prosaic white shirt was a miss here.

  • Judy_J

I wish the slacks were just a bit more tailored.  Otherwise, love this look.

  • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

I really really love her. She’s fabulous.

  • Kate4queen

I love Armani suits on women. :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

What I would give to be able to pull off a look like this. Sure, the pants are a little schlumpy, but the overall look is just wonderful!

  • kschwarting

Wow, she looks amazing.  Of course, she’s Cate, so that’s a bit of a given, but I really love this.  Any guesses on who makes the glasses?  I need reading glasses, and I’d love to find these.

  • Nunya Bizness

I like it, but it’s a bit polterwang.

  • kimmeister

I think I’d like the jacket better if the edges at the bottom weren’t so sharp.  Just a little rounding would be nice.

  • Pants_are_a_must

How weird, I dreamed last night I was wearing a slouchy 3-piece suit exactly in this fabric. GET OUT OF MY DREAMS AND INTO MY CAR, CATE BLANCHETT.

  • Puck Thornton

Kate is a Goddess! I luvvvv the suit, but I would like to have seen her in a shirt with a slightly stiffer collar. Or a tie.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I cannot get enough of Cate Blanchett – I adore her!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=13805908 Kelly Sowers

Normally I don’t disagree with TLo, but… she looks like Woody Allen.
    She really really does.
    I don’t like it.

  • LuisaNL

    Love it. LOVE HUH.

  • e jerry powell

Oh, HELLS yeah.  Although I didn’t see that those were oxfords right away and I was about to read a bitch for wearing sneakers.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’d love it if the slacks fit better. I understand comfort and a looser silhouette, but they look like they’re falling off.

  • formerlyAnon

THIS is my kind of girl. Though I’d pair the (very nice) shoes with a more feminine suit and choose this shoe, but in a leather finish and with some scalloped detailing or some minor leather frippery, with this suit.

  • http://twitter.com/malaulau Madeleine La

Can anybody ID those glasses? As in, more spesific than ‘hipster nerd glasses’.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

My first guess would be Ray-Ban Wayfairers, because I have reading glasses in a very similar shape and that’s what mine are.

    • StellaZafella

You can Google: Shuron (or “Vintage Eye Glasses) and look specifically for Shuron. They were and are still the maker of good quality frames in the retro and vintage styles that go in and out of popularity…but they don’t have a designer price tag.
I still wear their Regis I framless lenses with the hook style ear piece that’s straight from the 1930′s-50′s and the frames have all the current high-end features but only cost about $100.00.

      • formerlyAnon

I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I have not replaced the sunglasses I lost last year because I have not found a frame I liked & could afford (I loved those sunglasses beyond reason.) You have given me hope.

  • Larkin21

    Gorgeous. She does no wrong.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

    woah. WERQ!

  • Imasewsure

Eh I don’t love it. The fit is off (love it on the model of course). Love the shoes but not with this and I don’t like the shirt under the jacket… too literal to get my love this time….

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

She is my fantasy wife. Such a beautiful, intelligent, all-around fantastic woman.

  • SoAustentatious

I want to be young again so I can wear clothes like that.  Love the menswear look.
Since I’m wanting, I want to have Cate’s body and face, too.
    Please.

  • Victoria

I swear when I first saw the link, I thought it was a Fringe recap (even though I know it’s on break) bc it looked just like Olivia Dunham/Anna Torv!

  • unbornfawn

Not quite Kate. I’m seeing Ellen DeGeneres.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Ellen would look great in this!

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

portia!  run right out and get that holiday present!

  • lesmaha

    LOVE Armani suits–!

  • quiltrx

She’s so cool!  Love this look and especially the shoes.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

Those Oxfords are amazing, I must get a pair. Failing to find decently prized knock-offs, I will cover a cheap pair with tin foil if that’s my only recourse.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Ach!  $350.00.  Sigh.   I am with you on the tin foil project.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

yes, and perhaps use the dull side out, so as not to look eggs-zack-lee like tinfoil.

  • Judih1

Can you still wear make-up when you wear mens’ wear?

  • Cathy S

Ah, if only I weren’t short and stumpy.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i had named it nerd girl butch chicness before i saw your kate reference.  it is huge on her, but that’s intentional i’m sure.  and she certainly looks pleased with herself.  i love that herringbone wool, now that i live in a climate with real seasons.  too bad i have nowhere to wear a suit.  nor money to buy one… i guess it’s just as well.

  • Alice Tram

    I love this
