Amy Adams in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on November 05, 2012

Y’know, on almost any other ladystar, we might have dinged this look for being too literally retro:

Amy Adams attends the premiere of ‘On The Road’ during the 2012 AFI Fest in Hollywood, California in a Dolce&Gabbana dress.

But we think it’s just the kind of look Amy needs to rock every now and then. She’s not much of a risk-taker when it comes to her public appearance style. In fact, it’s hard for us to really pin down what her style is except to note that she rarely wears prints and usually defaults to a body-con silhouette and subdued colors. It’s nice to see her having some fun with her fashion and getting in touch with her inner Betty Draper. We think she looks cute. And very pleased with herself at the moment.

She looks adorable, I agree. When I was little I wanted to look like (and dress like)  this when I grew up. Just saw her in The Master, where she mostly had to wear 50s gingham maternity outfits. So she deserves a bit of 50s splashy dress-up.

      • Mary229

It’s funny you say that because I was thinking lately that for such a pretty lady, she rarely gets a chance to play roles in which they play up her beauty.   I would love to see her in a role where she got to dress adorably for once. I think back on how lovely they dressed her in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and as Amelia Earhart and I miss that.

        • http://twitter.com/FuLinlin FuLinlin

She was so cute & sexy in that movie, wasn’t she? A little bit like many roles Marylin played. But on the other hand, that she gets roles like the one she had in “Doubt” or now “The Master” shows that she is taken seriously and doesn’t get roles because she’s incredibly pretty but because she’s a great actress, doesn’t it?

          • Mary229

Oh absolutely.  I think there is zero doubt that she is one of the rare actresses right now that is cast for substance and talent.  She’s not an actress who is simply objectified.  But she is so lovely that I’m always happy for the chance for the movie to celebrate it.  It’s part of the reason why I’m excited to see her as Lois Lane in Man of Steel.   Doesn’t she deserve a movie where she gets to be wooed by Superman? :)

With the Grace Kelly biopic coming out next year with Nicole Kidman, I think we’re going to see a whole lot more of this kind of look on the red carpet and on the runway.

It’s a cute look on Amy Adams, but I couldn’t help thinking “It must be summer, somewhere.”

        • Mary229

And I still maintain that Amy should be the one starring in the biopic as Grace Kelly.  Not Nicole Kidman.

          • Unvacuous

You’re right, i didn’t think of her for GK but she has similar proportions of face, and is closer in age.  The eyes and eyebrows especially.  Kidman’s eyebrows look too dark and arched, giving her a sorta angry face.

I love the mid-century feminine style so I’m excited. Right now I have trouble finding the full skirts that I love.

        • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Well it was in the mid 90s in the LA area so yeah.  It’s summer-ish.

    • Patricia Gillett

Adorable. Nice to see her rocking a print on the RC. The colors suit her. Also love that she did not go with mermaid hair.

      • Mary229

I love her mermaid hair and normally think it’s so beautiful but I agree that it wasn’t the right look for this dress.  The hair up provides a nice showcase for her long neck and pretty skin.

    • http://twitter.com/k8twolf Katie Wolf

She looks youthful and happy; so different from many recent looks. Homerun!

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Very pretty – it’s a great match of dress and girl.
The thing I appreciate most is how well it fits in the bust.  Strapless without any pulling, dragging, tugging or pushing.

my first thought was The Drapes! The Drapes! but the last shot is just charming on her, the color is wonderful and well, by golly it works. Good job!

    • Fordzo

I love, love, love that ring!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

        I know! I wish I could get a better look though…

    • A B

Sorry, I think it’s too literal.  Maybe if the skirt weren’t so poofy and the top gave her some more breathing room it would work?  Even then it looks to me like something Amy Sedaris might wear.  I’m not wild about her hair here either–looks like you can see the band in the closeup shot but maybe it isn’t that noticable in real life.

    • nannypoo

I like it. It does, however, remind me of the birthday cakes my grandmother made for us, the ones with a plastic doll stuck in the middle of a cake baked in a bowl with the whole thing frosted to look like, well, like Amy Adams in this dress covered in white frosting.

    • Verascity

This is a huge step in the right direction for her, IMO.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I love me a big skirted gal.  And Miss Amy here, is working that look to death and back twice.  Go ON with your Mid Century Self!

    • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

I know it reads a bit upholstery, but I love it. Again, I think Miss Amy has the perfect hair color. And this print suits her coloring. Would have gone with painted toenails, but really, that’s just quibbling.

      • Mary229

I love her haircolor too but i’ve been thinking lately that I would sort of like to see her take the red a tad darker.  Instead of the strawberry to a deeper auburn.  Am I wrong on that?   I don’t know.  I’ve just been craving to see her with slightly darker hair lately.  More like how it was in Night at the Musum 2 when she played Amelia Earhart.  That movie was on TV the other day and she was so gorgeous in that movie.

        • shirab

I think that looks like it might be her own actual haircolor, judging by how much of the roots we can see in that profile shot. So I either applaud her for being the only ladystar willing to embrace her natural color, or I applaud her colorist for making it look that way.

    • call_me_schmeg

adorable and fresh. she’s so cute, and this makes me want to squeeze her little nose!

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      Fabulous!

    • SapphoPoet

She looks really pretty. Nice updo. Gorgeous ring!

    • jilly_d

      LURV that ring!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I think it looks fantastic.  The skirt is just a touch too big, but given how good it looks overall, it’s only a minor quibble.

    • renad

Love the print, hate the silhouette. Enough already with the Madmen nods. Is this from F/W 2012? Because their other dresses—those baroque homages to horny Italian widows—are much more interesting.

    • Mary229

This works only because she pulls off the retro vibe well.  I remember Amy saying once that her beauty icons were Ann-Margret and Grace Kelly.  This dress is like a Grace Kelly hair and retro vibe in a flirty Ann-Margret print.  It works for her.  The strapless shows off her beautiful, creamy skin and her long neck.  Her figure is cute and slim.   She looks young and pretty.

    • decormaven

Best look she’s sported in a long time. Kudos!

    • mjude

love the look. ahe really looks adorable.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

She looks happy wearing it. :) That is what really counts at the end of the day with style.

    • Anathema_Device

I’d like a little less volume in the skirt, but overall, she looks pretty cute. Nice to she her shake things up style-wise.

    • jw_ny

Very pretty. She actually looks younger and fresher here than she usually looks, which is kind of odd seeing as how this dress and that hair are totally retro.   :)

      • Mary229

I think it’s the opposite…she always looks young and fresh but her stylist often puts her in things that don’t emphasize how young she looks.  Truthfully, I’m not sure how many other women in their late 30′s could pull this off without looking ridiculous.

    • In_Stitches

I love the fabric.  The flowers are rendered beautifully and the black background really brings the whole look into the modern age.  I wish the skirt was about half as full.  As is, it’s just too dated.

That hair just isn’t flattering.  I’m not against an updo for this look, but I am staunchly against this particular one.  The jewelry, while nice, doesn’t really matter in this look.  It gets lost amid all the fluff.  Her makeup is…fine.  Ditch the liner and put a real color on that lip and she’d have more presence.  Shoes are great though, nice pick.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

What, no WERQ?  I think she looks just perfect, not a misstep anywhere.  And extra snaps for going with the updo!  Hooray for resisting the urge to have her long locks cover up her neck and the top of the dress!

    • Pants_are_a_must

It would’ve been a WERQ if the hairstyle had been updated retro, instead of an actual beehive, but for Amy Adams, not having mermaid hair IS an achievement.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Cute, but needs a slightly brighter lip color. She looks good in the pink but it’s doing nothing for her when combined with the high contrast dress – she looks washed out.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

      Fits her perfectly!

    • Tamara Hogan

      LOVE IT.

    • Alwayscoco

      So Betty Draper!

      Por favor Tom y Lorenzo:

Could you put up a photo of  Elizabeth Moss’ 2012 Emmy dress  by way of comparison?  Gracias.

    • Janet B

I love this look, she looks so lady like.
(The print is almost overwhelming her)

    • quiltrx

I LOVE that dress, and it looks great on her!  Good job Amy!

    • guest2visits

Although this works very prettily as a retro look; (and she looks great, btw) – I would have preferred to see the dress without the
poofy underskirt (or at least half of the poof); and paired with a more chic black shoe (possibly a wicked pointy pair that picks up on
      the peaked-bodice).

    • RzYoung

      It’s supercute, love the ring

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

      Love it. She looks fabulous.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

      That ring is beautiful!

    • MzzPants

I think she looks much better like this than she does in most of her red carpet appearances.  She should rock the retro more often.  It suits her.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

      Beautiful!

    • msdamselfly

      Neah

    • l_c_ann

Do any other folks who sew notice the odd red thread in the photo of her ring?  WTheck is that doing there?

And it’s cute, but it’s also proof that a skirt can be too full, unless you are Scarlett O’Hara.

      • http://twitter.com/Kikishua Kikishua

My first thought was “hey! tacking thread!”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I agree that the skirt is a smidge too full. Also, the “skinny arm” hands-on-hips pose is joining ranks with the pee-pee pose at this point. It looks so stiff and with a dress like this, it looks particularly ridiculous.

    • fringebenefit

      Love!

    • Mexxoo

She looks really cute, but Amy needs to make up her mind.  It seems she’s been trying so hard to get away from the Disney Princess pigeon hole, and then she wears something like this.  Still, it’s adorable, and it suits her so well.

      • Mary229

Why?  Why does she have to choose?  Isn’t it possible that Amy (like many women) has many different sides to herself?  Amy has clearly proven by this point (The Fighter, The Master, Sunshine Cleaning) that the “princess” thing was nothing more than her being a really good actress.   She’s proven she has tons of range.  I don’t think women have to choose between one or the other.  I think Amy, like many women, is probably a woman of many sides.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks totally adorable! I think old-school feminine with a quirky-bordering-on-wacky edge might be her fashion niche. More of this Amy, it’s time you strengthened your brand. J’adore the pattern, the hair, the ring, the outrageously proportioned skirt. A total win.

    • unbornfawn

I agree. She’s rocking this look. I love the hair on her.

    • sk8tfan

She looks darling. love the colors and the shape on her. Love that she feels gorgeous. I want the jewelry. If you see her, please mug her and send me the ring.

    • MilaXX

She looks great. It’s a lot more interesting than too serious looks she’s been wearing lately.

    • EEKstl

She looks adorable.  And may I say this is a MUCH better design for this fabric than the one Elisabeth Moss wore to the Emmys.

    • Lolo Andre

Is there a Kristen Stewart post from the same premiere that I missed or the guys ignored it ??

    • jmorino08

She needs to lose a few layers in her crinoline and she’d be adorable. As it stands, she looks like one of those Barbie cakes with legs.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Love it all, especially that ring!

    • neofashionista

      I love this on her
she can totally work the retro fo shizzle

    • marilyn

      Cute.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

      Perfect!

    • kimmeister

      Totally love it!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I like it! It works for her because it’s not a neutral/beige-y washed-out color, and looks good against her skin. Her hair, makeup and accessories look good too.

    • Donna Schmidt

      Love it

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      This really works for her.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

She looks super cute here.  Don’t mind how literal this is either but I wish her hair had been styled differently.

    • oohsparkley!

      It’s a Werq! for me.

    • maggiemaybe

She’s pretty freakin’ adorable, I must say.

Love, love and love.  And then love some more.

    • FrayedMachine

She looks positively cute as a button!
