WERQ: Gabrielle Union in Bill Blass

Posted on October 03, 2012

Gabrielle Union attends Urbanworld Film Festival in a Bill Blass dress paired with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and clutch.

Bill Blass Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Jourdan Dunn

There is not one thing here that doesn’t look fantastic; the dress, the bod, the shoes, the hair, the makeup, the clutch – it’s all working overtime. We love a good silver-and-black combo and girl, you are WERQing the shit out of that one.

But get your hand out of your pocket, please. We’ll give you snaps of respect if you do.

  • There is one tiny thing that keeps this from being a full stop WERQ for me.  The hem is just a tiny bit too low for me. I would have preferred it if it stopped right at the knee, rather than just past it.  Otherwise? Awesomeness

    • julesj

      Exactly my thought.

    • tereliz

I think maybe the longer length is keeping it more demure. With the removal of the sleeves, the neckline looks so much more daring, and I think lengthening the hem makes it look more chic. But what’s up with the pockets?

      • I like pockets.  Still, putting one’s hand(s) in one’s pocket(s) during a photo shoot is a no-no.  Applies equally to men and women.

      • boomchicabowwow

I was thinking that the dress was pulled a bit tight across the hips, but removing one’s hands from one’s pockets would instantly fix that!

  • holzfaellen

Hm, the blue version looks a bit fresher to me. Still, a great look!

    • kimmeister

I love the cobalt blue myself, but think that the neckline works better without sleeves, like GU has.

  • janetjb

    She looks fabulous.
The pockets don’t seem to be a design feature, so why bother with them?

    •  I was thinking the same thing. If the pockets are virtually useless, and would doubtless ruin the line of the dress, when in use, why include them?  Its a waste of design time, and production time, as well.

I wonder that about all of my pencil skirts that have front pockets!  Seriously, it’s a PENCIL skirt, it needs to look sleek.  I just leave the pockets sewn shut.

        • I usually find such things annoying. Zippers that serve no function; superfulous buttons; and pockets that are rendered unusable by their size or position, are all on the list.

          • ballerinawithagun

You just listed many of my garment pet peeves. Also bows that serve no purpose!

  • Pants_are_a_must

I wanna take it a notch below WERQ because the hand-in-the-pocket pose is making it pull across her hips and my eye twitch.

    • My reasoning for giving it a “WERQ minus” is that I like the model’s version better. Don’t know if that’s fair to Union but it’s Wednesday so life’s not fair.

  • Alyson Epstein

Would it have killed her to put on some earrings?

  • MilaXX

     WERQ it!

  • AlinaValero

thank god she got to this dress before lea michele did

    • Lea would have chopped about 15 inches off the hem, too.

  • She loves some bill blass, and rightfully so.  She looks fantastic.

  • I wish this had been shorter, as in the model’s shot.  Other than that, you’re right, it’s perfect.  I can see Zoe Saldana in this dress, too.

  • gabbilevy

Every dress should have pockets. She looks fab, but I wish she’d kept the sleeves. Love it.

    • Daniele Paulding

i think she looks great but i agree, the sleeved version of the dress is so beautiful…and maybe more seasonally appropriate? in any case, still a werq for me.

  • Ceur

Did we just see shoes that actually fit? Please share your secret, Gabrielle.

    • tereliz

      LOL, either they’re hers or she’s a size 9!

  • Anathema_Device

That blue version of the dress is absolutely stunning. Wow.

I’m totally down with this WERQ. Even with the hands in the pockets. She is somehow managing understated elegance in a show-stopper of a dress.

  • Introspective

she looks damn good, superfluous pockets and all. i like that the dress hits below the knee. if you have a deep v of cleavage and bare arms, then dont give me too much leg and fall off the cliff into desperation. as gabby did it here, its sexy without being slutty. nice.

  • EEKstl

Hand in pocket or no, this is perfection.

  • Meh. I wish she’d gone for the blue.

  • Love the black and silver much more than the blue and silver the model is wearing. Gab looks fab.

  • WERQ-minus for me too. I think there’s too much skin on display with the sleeveless version and the low-plunge open necline, and I agree that the hem is just a bit too long.  Prefer the sleeved version.

  • Why is she not a bigger deal? She is a-fucking-mazing and needs to be super-famous. I want her and Angela Bassett to play mother/daughter (or sister/sister) bad-ass smart action heroes in some all-new franchise of fantasticness.

    Get on that, Hollywood.

  • Judy_J

I’m all for a keyhole neckline, but when it is open to the waist, the line has been crossed from classy to tacky.

  • granddelusion

Oh, god, put those things away, already. And by the way, your skirt is too tight.

  • Gorgre

  • quiltrx

That’s a great dress, and the shoes are perfect with it.  My only ‘down’ mark is that I can see inner underboob, in titscrepancy fashion even (it gapes way more on her right).  Some body adhesive would have made it a WERQ for me.

  • kaycem

and can we give a WERQ to bill blass for including ladypockets (even if she should keep her hands out of them while being photographed)?  femme clothes that include pockets warms the cockles of my cold, dead heart.  #TeamLadypockets

  • BrooklynBomber

Personal best. I don’t even like the dress, but she looks amazing.

  • Love it, head to toe. She looks gorgeous.

  • TomBord

my what a phallic bag you have!

  • BazoDee

I love it -but it seems a tad too much on the sternum/boob area the way it is taped.

  • SublimatedRage

She has always been on my “Fence-jumper” list.  Is that what you boys called it the other day?  You know — the one I would be willing to jump-the-fence for… as it were 😉

    Man, this girl is stunning!

  • Jessi03

Oh my goodness, she looks incredible!  The shoes!  The SHOOOOES!

  • melanie0866

I wish she had worn it in the blue print instead of the black!  That is striking.

  • Im just never able to give her a “WERQ!”…theres always something off about her look. This time its the hem

  • MissAmynae

She’s sexy and she knows it!

    really, I’d switch teams.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Love her, love this dress. Both versions of this dress, I’d like to see the blue’n’silver on January Jones. Her shoes are fabulous, the bag is perfectly sleek. Le sigh. Goddess.

  • Love.

  • Trisha26

She has the body, but there is no need for that front slit. On anyone. I’m tired of seeing almost boobs and ribcages.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

pretty dress, more unusual in the blue. she looks great, no problem, but the dress itself looks better w/ the sleeves. then again, if she’s here she had every reason to have them forcibly ejected. i was gonna wonder who was designing for bill blass these days [the company, not the person. the person has departed this silly coil for, one hopes, someplace far superior] but then i clicked on the link &, you know, eureka. now i can only ask if many or, in fact, almost any people have heard of the person who is designing for bill blass. dont know, not sure. then again i havent slept so i may just be forgetting what i know.

  • shelley514

Everything looks perfect, but I’m a little bored with Gabby.  Not having an ah-hah moment here.

  • LeifBallard

Love it!! the print looks like an abstract version of hounds-tooth….and everybody loves hounds-tooth!

  • AngelaGreen

That woman has made some sort of pact with the devil, because she is gorgeous and looks exactly the same as she did in Bring It On.

  • Zippypie

When boobs look like they’re spilling, there is no WERQ in my view.  Just boobs.  Spilling.

  • Nothin’ to see here, folks, it’s perfection!  Movin’ along, nothing to snark at….

  • jw_ny

Love it…everything.  So much better in black & silver…that shade of blue on the model is nauseating.  A deeper blue would be pretty tho.  It’s a pretty dress with & without the sleeves, but I like it better without, as on Gabrielle….she has nice arms & shoulders.

  • lrhoff

    Not working for me.  Yuck.

  • guest2visits

This is a gorgeous dress – and she looks perfect in it.  I just wonder how you don’t have a clothing malfunction with that
much of a bust-slit.  Whats ok for the RW might be too much else where; maybe it should have been a slightly smaller gap.

  • Sweetvegan

This is not a WERQ for me. That’s a little too much side boob (on the inside side, which is unusual). I think the dress only works if you are rather flat-chested, like the model.

  • LOVE THE BLUE VERSION! OMG. I need that, fashion gods!
