WERQ: Elle Fanning in Rochas

Posted on October 15, 2012

This feels like the culmination of Elle’s personal style evolution. It’s the perfect balance between the granny styles she tends to favor and the princess styles she should be wearing more of.

Elle Fanning attends the premiere of ‘Ginger And Rosa’ during the 56th BFI London Film Festival in Rochas.

Rochas Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Julia Shvets (NATHALIE)

Honestly, if anyone else showed up on the red carpet wearing a lace choker and a cardigan draped over a gown, we’d tear them a new one, but she looks absolutely beautiful here. We kind of wish she’d worn the little white gloves with it. She’s one of the few starlets who could’ve pulled them off. The whole look is helped by a masterful hair and makeup job, which hasn’t always been the case with Miss Elle.

You WERQ that personal style, Miss Girl! Granny princess snaps!

She’s cute but the dress washes her out.

    • j_anson

“Washed out” seems to be kind of her style hallmark, though, no? Like, I think it’s a conscious choice. I’m not sure what I think of it, but it certainly does tend to make her stand out from the crowd in an ethereal way, I suppose.

      • FashionShowAtLunch

Indeed. She really goes for “consumptive chic” a lot of the time.  Personally, I love it. Like TLo said, not everyone can pull off that style, but I think it works for her.

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

    I still don’t like her hair…

    • Kristin McNamara

She needs to get her roots touched up about 75 times more often than she currently does, OR she needs to just go to her natural color!

      • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I was just going to make this comment, that I’m all for seeing her natural color (or something approaching it) and abandoning this sad blonde color. It’s sucking the life right out of her.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

I’m pretty sure it’s on purpose.

    • mayavaly

Oh, thank god. I was starting to panic scrolling through the comments that I was the only one.

  • MilaXX

I saw this over the weekend.  On anybody else I would hate this but I like this because it feels like the sort of thing a 13 year old gal with access to designer clothes wold choose. Even though the dress feels a skoosh too long on her I think she looks cute.

  • SapphoPoet

Beautiful and unusual (second time today I’ve used that word in a TLo comment). YES to the gloves. Love that last picture of her; it’s really fun.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Can’t say I love the lace choker — think it should be about 1/2 the height, but everything else is absolutely adorable.  I am so looking forward to seeing how her style continues to evolve.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Or just not there at all. I am not a fan of the lace choker and I don’t think it being narrower would help! Totally agree about looking forward to seeing her style evolve.

      • pop_top

For some reason, I just imagined that the lace choker was attached to the cardigan and was what was allowing it to be so *effortlessly* draped across her shoulders like that.

  • afabulous50

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one…you’re the experts, not me.

  • ralish

Lovely! Beautiful colors. And now I’m jealous of a pre-teen :)

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

LOVE it! I love everything about it – and she totally looks like she’s having a blast (especially in that last picture) – which is the icing on the cake. And man, she’s a beautiful girl!

    • GorgeousThings

Yes – that last picture made me grin. She looks like she’s having a great time!

  • lbl

I love this so much. Honestly, I could take or leave the choker (especially because her hair is down), but the cardigan is the perfect touch. PERFECT.

  • AthenaJ

Is the cardi being kept on by the choker? I like the dress better on its own, but that’s just me.

  • Sobaika

Agree to disagree. I sort of detest this.

    • charlotte

I agree to agree with you. Although the last shot is lovely…but rather despite than because of her dress.

    • pop_top

I also agree. Maybe I’d like the dress more without the cardigan, but with the lace choker, coupled with how her hair washes her out, I feel like it’s bordering on period piece or too costume-y. I just keep thinking of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

  • shirab

She looks great, but I am just so done with all the dark roots on the blonde ladystars on the red carpet. Unless it’s deliberate because it is a Fashion Trend, in which case I still don’t like it but at least then there’s some reason for it.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks amazing! Completely unique and memorable, but still quite lovely. Love it when this kid smiles.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

Like everything except choker, gloves would have been okay.

  • JasmineAM

Masterful hair? Her hair always looks like this.

  • l_c_ann

The picture with her in full out grin mode is great.

The rest are sort of Stepford Children.

  • Janet B

    The last photo is lovely.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

WERQ!!!  And her make-up is the best I’ve ever seen on her.

    • mountainFashionista

Yes — she remembered to blot & powder!

  • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

I adore this, from head to toe.

  • Ceur

How adorable is that last picture!

  • crash1212

Love that last picture. And love this dress.

  • granddelusion

Ick. And shorten your dress, you’ll trip on it.

  • GorgeousThings

Funny, the lace choker is the one thing I don’t like about it. The rest of it is great.

  • Snailstsichr

I like the choker on her – but no one else! I cannot fathom how she keeps the sweater up. Maybe has has magic shoulders (or at least more muscle definition than I have).

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Beautiful! But I do wish she’d taken the cardigan off.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

      It’s cold over there.

  • http://profiles.google.com/susanvmayer Susan Mayer

The lace choker reminds me of the story of the lady with the ribbon around her neck that keeps her head attached.

Other than that, she looks fab!

    • mountainFashionista

That story kept me awake on more than one night when I was a kid  :-)

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I think it errs way too much on the granny side.  Someone needs to remind her she’s only 14 and not the mother of a 14-year-old.

  • B_C_J

Beautiful look. Love the color, the cardigan, the hair, the makeup. I only have issues with the lace choker because it seems too tall. Also the gown should be a tad shorter.  However, she looks exquisite.

  • Imasewsure

She looks like a modern day Cinderella – normally from me that would be an insult, but this is adorable. I always imagine that this is what Taylor Momsen would look like in a parallel universe

  • tereliz

The choker is WAY too wide (speaking from experience. I was her age when they were in style the last time), but otherwise, I think she looks adorable.

  • miagain

What is she….13??  I just can’t buy into a 13 year old swanning along on the red carpet, wearing thousands and thousands of dollars of designer duds…

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

the color of that cardigan is perfect.  without it, she’d be too bland.

  • Judy_J

I do wish she’d gotten the dress hemmed before wearing it.  How she managed to walk in it without stepping on the hem, I’ll never know.  There’s long, and then there’s too long.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Wow. She looks absolutely stunning. Everything about this look is giving me life — and I want that cardigan!

  • Kayceed

I think this looks great – it’s juvenile, but it works since she is in fact young. If a 30-year-old wore this, it would be insufferable.

  • jw_ny

Her hair and makeup are perfect.  That is the first thing I noticed when I saw the pics…surprising since she’s wearing that rather bold print gown, and all.  The gown is great on her…it looks like it moves great, she looks super thin and tall (probably platforms, but since we can’t see them, we can’t judge them…lol), and I like the sweater ok enough.  Hate the choker, but whatever…she deserves the WERQ!  :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

Lovely…just a tad shorter in front!

  • MarissaLG

Get rid of the choker and the sweater and I would have agrees. I don’t know why she has all that shit piled up on her.

  • MarissaLG

Also, “the culmination of her personal style evolution”?? She’s a baby! I’ve got 10 years on her and I feel like my PSE is just getting started.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Perhaps TLo were being a tad tongue in cheek?  I don’t know. She’s so young that her style is mostly likely going to be changing often over the next few years.

    • kschwarting

She absolutely is a baby–and I’ve got a lot more than ten years on her.  I think maybe TLo is referencing that she’s been in the public eye since a very young age, when most of us were (fortunately) not being critiqued on our style choices.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Have you been walking the red carpet for years, working in a highly image-oriented industry, posing for fashion editorials, utilizing a stylist, and wearing outfits that cost more than a car?

      • MarissaLG

You don’t know my life! :) Of course not, but I just think that saying she’s done- she’s gone as far as she can go- is a little silly. She’s very talented and will probably be in the spotlight for years. I’d hope that her personal style will continue to evolve and change as she will.

        • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

I think you’re being just a bit too literal, but fine: it’s the culmination of her CURRENT style evolution; that is to say, she finally nailed how to dress like a teenager who likes to dress like a granny.

  • j_anson

She does look really nice in this. This is also the third set of photos in a row in which she looks awfully tense and tired, though. Maybe it’s just her coloring and makeup?

  • glennethph

The last oicture was perfectly adorable and charming.

  • msdamselfly

Do not like the choker on her

  • NCDFan

    Go girl!

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Gorgeous girl, gorgeous dress.  But too much cascading hair, especially with a choker.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Delete choker, add gloves and all will be right with the world.

  • kimmeister

The choker might’ve been more tolerable had she had an updo.  Sans updo, she should’ve ditched the choker.

  • RocknRollmom

I love this.  She is adorable and again, age appropriate!

  • PinkLemon

WOAH. YES, girl. YES. Shoulda worn the gloves.

  • carolynmo

    She’s absolutely lovely.

  • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I thought she was a lot older than 13. It’s adorable. I don’t think it would work on anyone too much older than that but on her, it looks great.

  • formerlyAnon

I am not convinced about the lace choker and the cardigan together. If I’d had to choose two of the three (choker, cardigan and gloves) I’d have gone with gloves + choker for first choice and gloves + cardigan for second.

Of course, no one is asking my sartorial advice & I’d love to have someone expert to consult myself, so there’s that.

  • Miss_Led

Very charming and definitely a WERQ.
What the heck happened to the model? She has a sad?

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

My word, she looks astonishing here.  Personal best, I honestly had no idea she was capable of it.  She should never let the hair & makeup people responsible for this look out of her sight.

  • MissAmynae

Girls- do you remember the excitement of your first real formal “school dance”? you know, the one where boys weren’t icky anymore?  And remember how HARD it was to find that perfect dress to make you feel beautiful and like a confident bad-ass that could walk right up to the QB and ask him to dance to mariah carey or Boyz II Men?

This is that dress for her.

    • formerlyAnon

You lost me at the point of imagining any dress that would have allowed me to walk right up to any popular boy (or even any nerdy boy whom I liked) and ask him to dance. That would have taken the bite of a radioactive Barbie (or some equally unlikely granting of adolescent super powers).

      • MissAmynae

Radioactive Barbie- Now With Ultra-Glowing Magical Hair!!

  • http://profiles.google.com/rosatcollege Ros Clarke

I wish she’d worn the cardigan properly. Slipped over the shoulders always makes me twitch. But otherwise this is as cute as.

  • snarkykitten

hahaha that model photo is hilarious. “no please, don’t photograph me in this hideous thing!”

  • Zippypie

UGH.  That dress is wearing her.  The style is right for her, but it’s about to swallow her up into a pool of grandma’s curtains.

  • claudemtl777

I just had a flash while looking at the pix. She lacks the gravitas (and the acting chops, I guess,) but physically wouldn’t she have been good as grace Kelly?

  • JMansm

I love her hair SO MUCH.

  • kschwarting

OK, I loathe the lace choker.  But that last photo where she’s laughing is just charming.

  • Dhammadina

It’s that smile in the last photo that is the real winner.

  • quiltrx

Absolute perfection!  Seriously, and this is a rare thing–I can’t find anything about this I don’t like.  It really suits her personal style, it hangs beautifully, and has just enough color and interest to keep her away from being too washed-out and boring.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

she’s adorable — she feels much more relatable than dakota.

  • Trisha26

She looks like a storybook character – perfectly unreal – and then the last photo tells the truth! Adorable.

  • PeaceBang

She is absolutely owning this look but I hate the distraction of the little cardie. What a fabulous gown. What girl wouldn’t be thrilled to a big, dazzling grin by this? She looks great.

  • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

What a WERQ was made for. Lovely.

  • http://the-afterimage.blogspot.com/ lae

that choker robbed her of a neck ):

  • guest2visits

Very cute but I absolutely hate that choker.

  • ojosazules

I’m so glad her face isn’t shiny. The lace choker seems age appropriate. Baby girls have no business wearing serious jewelry. She looks wonderful.

  • http://twitter.com/oneneatcat Lisa Carey-Bremner

The choker freaks me out- it’s like a wide bandage that’s keeping her head on.  Halloween is getting to me.

  • DinahR

Oufit is adorable on her, and is probably only going to be adorable on her… so well, done Elle!

I get that she likes a natural and fresh look, but I’m SO glad someone smoothed out her hair so prettily and did her makeup.  That is the makeup she needs to always be wearing.  That very last shot of her is beautiful.

  • Sweetvegan

    Gorgeous!

  • RzYoung

i love the print. I can’t stand choker’s but teenagers always seem to have a propensity towards them.

  • Contralto

    adorable.

  • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow aka Darth Mommy

That last picture is adorable.  She’s very “Snow Princess at the Spring Ball” eh?

  • nannypoo

Very pretty. I love the colors and the flowiness of this dress and the cardigan is adorable. Her makeup is perfect. She can look really washed out, but here she has the perfect amount of makeup for a girl her age. Now they need to tone down the color of her hair, which I think is way too yellow. And I hate the choker.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

She has beautiful eyes, the dress compliments them nicely!

  • http://twitter.com/PsychicMuppet Bitsey Carver

May I brag that I was ten feet to the left? Screw it. I WAS TOTALLY THERE. :)

  • librarygrrl64

Stunning gown and a good palette for her blonde coloring. WERQ, indeed!

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

oooooh this is cute. i love granny style done right.

  • http://twitter.com/Wint3rhart Winterhart

I really love that last picture.  It seems less staged and so much more her natural self.  I think this looks unique and interesting on her!

  • Synnamin

I love how she always WERQWERQWERQ the cameras, then suddenly devolves into that adorable, huge grin.

  • Larkin21

Wow, she looks great! I wouldn’t have thought this color palette would work for her but it really does. And I can’t get over how darn cute she is in that last picture.

  • TSkot

    WERQ!?!  You guys are slipping

  • http://profiles.google.com/rociosaurio Rocío Vázquez

Her face is not shinny. FINALLY!!!

  • PaulaBerman

I despise that lace choker enough to say this is not a WERQ. It looks like she is trying to cover up a neck full of love bites, or a vampire bite.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

Looks like something Sarah Jessica would wear- and look ridiculous in.
