WERQ: Britney Spears in Halston

Posted on October 11, 2012

Credit where credit is due: Miss Lady looks awesome.

Britney Spears attends the City Of Hope Gala in a silver dress by Halston paired with Alexis Bittar jewelry.

What were most impressed by is the fact that this fits her just so (which is almost never the case with her choices) and the hem stops exactly where it’s supposed to (which is rarely the case with most red carpet gowns). Add to that the overall chicness of the look and the fact that it’s relatively simple and we are sending out snaps of respect in every direction. You WERQ that classic chic, Brit, girl!

  • The dress looks nice. But what happened to her FACE?

    • call_me_schmeg

      she’s not 17 anymore, that’s what.

      • The inner corners of her eyes are contoured too much, that’s what: it’s a typical beauty ‘trick’ to contour under the browbone, through to the bridge of the nose. In this case, that contour is overwhelming the look. When I first saw the eyeshadow, I thought that she’d taken Giuliana Rancic’s makeup artist.

        • To me, at first (and second, and third) look, it appears to go beyond even the most advanced makeup trick. Sister girl looks like a completely different person, and not counting the normal “OK she’s not 17 now”. Her face to me now looks like “Generic ‘Entertainment Tonight’-type show host #139”

          • julesj

Weird. I never would have recognized her (face).

          • Yes. She doesn’t look older, she looks like a different person.

        • Is that what it is? She really doesn’t look like Britney. And she looked like Britney just last week, so it’s not her age. If it’s a makeup trick, she shouldn’t do it again!

          • Jenn0978

            Looks Botox-y to me!

        • PinkyAndNoBrain

The lighting is really unflattering, too. Some shots are lovely, but others turn her skin the color of a Tim Burton character.

      • librarygrrl64

Agreed, but she has now made herself look older than she actually is, IMO. The harshness of the hair color doesn’t help.

    • kikisayshi

She looks so sad, don’t you think?

      • rivula

I agree — it’s the eyes I notice, not her age.  And for some reason she always has a dark smoky eye going on that accentuates them.

        • kikisayshi

Exactly. Even though she’s smiling and looks good, you can tell in her eyes.

        • kimmeister

It’s the way they’re overly contoured at the inner corners that looks unflattering to me.

        • The sad eyes are killing me. I’m not an advocate of cosmetic surgery, but if she’s not under a heavy depression, she should look into see if there is something that can be done to fix that.

    • Sobaika

      Her face looks fine.

      • RebeccaKW

Right?  She looks just like Britney, only a bit older.  Like nature intended.  Unlike that hideous perfume ad from yesterday.

        • Aly Light

Right, it kind of just makes me hate that ad all the more– she looks just fine, but they had to morph her into a 17-year-old self to put her in and ad. It’s gross.

        • megohd

          I disagree — I think she looks like she’s wearing a mask.

      • I think it looks better than it has in a while. Her make-up artist has a tendency to giver her old-school raccoon eyes that make it look like her eyes are very droopy. But not this time!

    • ecallaw1977

She looks like Elizabeth Hasselbeck here.

      • Tom Shea

Jane Krakowski was my thought. They’re both gorgeous, but Britney is about 10 years younger than Jane is.

        • Jennifer Coleman

Actually Jane turns 44 today. Brit’s 14 years younger.

        • MK03

          Beat me to it.

    • kschwarting

I think she just looks a little tired.  My undereye circles sympathize.

    • jilly_d

I think she’s finally grown to look like a woman, not the 17-year-old we were accustomed to seeing.  Ol’ Brit hasn’t had it easy the last few years, and while I don’t count myself among her fans, it’s nice to see her looking like she has some character rather than like an airbrushed Barbie head.

    • Le_Sigh

Bad eye contouring makeup – it makes them look way more deep-set than they are.

      • We’re not makeup experts by any stretch, but it always looks to us like her eye makeup overemphasizes the crease in her lid and it doesn’t work for her eye shape.

        • plzidgaf

http://imageshack.us/a/img6/6818/britneyeye01.jpghttp://imageshack.us/a/img690/7140/britneyeye02.jpg only edit made in those photos is the lightened eye makeup. It makes such a huge difference, right? A stylist needs to sit her down and have an intervention.

        •  I’ve always thought her eyes turned down at the outside(like Katie Holmes.  The lighter inner lid along with a defined contour evens them out.

        • Le_Sigh

Yes – true.  This time its emphasized b/c of  that weird extra shading done only in the inner browbone – and her brows meet it so its  contouring her face in a slightly different way.  I dunno – she almost sorta looks like Mariah Carey in that last photo.

On the Britney curve of looks though, overall, she looks pretty damn good.  I’ll take the slightly awkward face makeup with clean and polished and properly fitted any day.

      •  It’s making her brow look like it’s drooping and I’m sure it’s not, because she’s really not old enough for that.  They needed to go with a more round curve.

      • Pants_are_a_must

I was wondering why her eyes looked so off. Isn’t this very Cher? Britney Spears doesn’t look like Cher.

      • AnnaleighBelle

I think that the makeup is also the wrong tone for her.  It looks dusty.  Warmer is better for her, I think…

    • Jenna621

I had the exact same thought. It really does look like bad/too much makeup.  She is still quite young, if no longer a baby-faced teenager.  Her face looks much better on X Factor.

    • Hell Yes, I Would!

It looks like some of the close ups have a gray tint to them. The full body shots – her face looks great. The close ups – it looks like a dull gray cast over them (like halloween makeup type coloring)

    • moja31

wondered the same thing, she looks like a real housewife.

    • AthenaJ

I know, I almost didn’t recognize her. I can’t tell if it’s just her getting older (as we all are), bad makeup, or if she’s had some work done. Her eyes also look very sad. I think Brit needs an early retirement, cause it doesn’t seem like she’s enjoying much of this anymore.

    • Allyson Wells

What do you mean? I think her face looks very pretty. I’m not big fan of the dress, but at least it fits. I wish I could have every piece of jewelry Alexis Bittar has ever made!!!

    • imspinningaround

Her face is fine, but she looks dead in the eyes.  Like she’s got all the life sucked out of her.

  • hillmad

Her eyes just look so dead…

    • mhleta

They always do. Even when she’s performing. I wish she could find some joy in her work.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

That’s what I first thought when I saw her picture — there’s just no joy or light in her eyes.  I find that very sad.

  • Damn! Brit is giving full on drag face realness.

  • Now this, THIS is a great look for Brit.  My only issue, and I can give her a pass on it, is the overuse of extensions.  The tumbling Barbie hair is a bit much. Otherwise, she looks lovely, and really put together.

    •  It’s the extensions that hold it back for me too. Great dress, great cuff, cheap-looking hair.

      • Judih1

I agree the extensions are too much. Sadly extra long extensions, just like extra large fake boobs are the new norm in Hollywood

      • I’ll never understand how someone with so much money can use such cheap-looking extensions that rarely ever match her hair color.

    •  I made a mental note of the extensions too, but decided to ignore them, considering how great the rest of the look is for her.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I really like the Halston-glam, but not over the top.

    • RebeccaKW

       They aren’t even good extensions.

I wish she would move to a more natural shade of blond.  Less lemon, more sandy.  Would be so much better with her coloring.

    • twocee

I’ve never understood the extensions thing, on anyone really.  Perhaps because one of the few natural beauty things I’ve been gifted with is good hair, but I cannot imagine wearing “fake” hair.

      • formerlyAnon

Oh, I could see adding hair in a hot minute for public appearances – but to me the point of having money for such things is to spend it so they don’t look fake. Um, unless one is into the not-found-in-nature colors, which I admit to liking, sometimes.

    • Pinup Ghoul

I agree. I’d love to see her change up her classic California Girl look, too. I think something more sleek and classic, maybe shorter, would be a great look for her. She has such a pretty face, the panorama of bright yellow waves just distracts from that.

    • VeryClaire

      And the ends are YELLOW.

  • call_me_schmeg

  • Jonas Claude Laurente

Her makeup made her look like a man. Horrible

    • Paigealicious

I thought mannish makeup, too. The dress looks great, though.

  • hyperionic

Hmm. Not a big fan of the shape on her. Feels like it was designed for someone skinnier and flatter. Like Keira Knightley.

  • prettybigkitty

She’s morphing into a housewife.  Hillbillie Housewives would be a good show.   Honey Boo Boo meets the Real Housewives.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think Honey Boo Boo meeting the Real Housewives could signal the end of times.

  • kikisayshi

    She finally looks her age.

  • ballerinawithagun

Correct length but something is wrong with the hem.

  • The fit is terrific.  I think she’d look even better if it were the perfect shade of off-white for her.

  • Teri Brinson

She does look attractive here if tired. I bet a lot of the reason this look works is because we can’t see the inevitable booties she has on under that gown.

  • BazoDee

Her make-up is HORRID – WTH??? neck down + hair is a WERQ tho.

  • mbelchic

Yeah, she looks good for her, but she looks so OLD-

  • It’s pretty, but I just want to give her a bottle of water and wipe off half the makeup on her face. It’s looking a little caked on which is making her look tired.

  • schadenfreudelicious

A big improvement for Brit overall.  Her hair does remind me of this doll I had as a child however; you could yank it out of a hole in the top of her head to make it longer..as i recall was that exact color and texture….

    •  The Chrissy doll! I had one of those, too, til my rotten little sister chopped her hair off.

      • schadenfreudelicious

yes!! i had forgotten her name, i am sure my brother did the same thing with mine!

      • I adored my Chrissy doll.  And my burgeoning fashion sense prompted me to hand-sew lots of clothes for her.

      •  I haven’t thought about my Chrissy doll in decades – thanks!

  • She looks great – except her face is completely unrecognizable!

ETA: And she looks crazy uncomfortable to be there.

  • nannypoo

While I don’t think her makeup is perfect, it’s a great improvement over the usual for her. On the X-factor she looks blurry and sort of damp. She doesn’t have great skin and her smile never involves her whole face. The problem with this makeup job, though, is that she doesn’t look like herself. I can’t quite decide who I thought it was, but Britney Spears would not have come to mind.

  • it’s so nice to see her looking good, does my heart happy

  • kolokOlchik

    She looks scared and sad.

    • Chantelle James

She does. It’s hard to see that, because I want to believe that if she’s there, she’s happy…. but that’s simply not true.

    • Anathema_Device

I think she looks really tired.

    • call_me_schmeg

she doesn’t look *quite* as uncomfortable as she’s looked in the recent past. unfortunately for her, i think we can all recall the bubbly “i’m just so happy to be here!” years and now she seems… disconnected. i imagine i’d feel the same way if everybody knew all my shit and were thinking, “there’s britney. remember when she totally lost it?” i’m not a fan of her music of general persona, and i don’t want to say i pity her, but… her discomfort makes me feel embarrassed for her.

      • kolokOlchik

I don’t pity her but I sympathize.  No matter the millions and the fame, it is probably very tough to be her.
Makes me think of an episode that South Park did on her, where she shot herself in the head and people were still taking pictures and were all up in her business.  I wonder if she wishes she could just fade into obscurity sometimes.

        • BrooklynBomber

I think it must be very hard for someone whose entire career was built on being a teenager to transition into adulthood. It’s not that she became successful as a teenager; it’s more like being a teenager was her career.

          • call_me_schmeg

            this is spot-on.

  • MamaKambo

I read the title of the link and audibly gasped!  I could not believe that she would ever be considered for a WERQ. I’ve been a fan for a long time and her life has been so sad.  It makes me happy to see her out looking like a respected adult.  Now if only the smile reached her eyes…

  • claudemtl777

    She looks like debbie Gibson

  • Am I the only one who thinks she looks like she needed more support under that dress?

    • Anathema_Device

Heh, just posted the same thing.

  • B_C_J

Not loving the fit of the dress below the bust. It falls straight down from there and adds a lot of volume to a woman who clearly has a lovely figure. Perhaps one size smaller would have been better.  However, overall she looks very nice even though I think the make up is a bit heavy and the hair extensions are just too obvious.

  • Janet B

Britney look terrific.  I had hoped that her style might evolve while she’s on the X Factor, maybe it’s happening.

    Extensions are evil.

  • MilaXX

It’s definitely an improvement. A BIG improvement for her, but the extensions are a little too yellow, and the hem while at the right length, looks like it needs to be pressed. The makeup is great though and I like the idea of the dress. Great look, just not a WERQ for me.

  • kschwarting

I’m not totally enthralled with the dress’ shininess–it seems to be making her look a little wide when she clearly isn’t, particularly in the second photo.

  • Anathema_Device

I think her boobs need support, but I’ll sign off on this werq. She looks chic and not the least bit tacky…well except for the yellow hair, but Brit’s gotta be Brit.

  • Jessi03

It’s a huge step forward for Brit Brit, but what’s going on with the makeup?  Is it just the weird lighting and odd-colored backdrop that’s making her look so grey?

  • MoHub

Never thought I’d see WERQ and Britney Spears in the same banner, but you’re right.

  • MarissaLG

    Ummm…She looks…well rested.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

The makeup is a bit crazy around the bridge of her nose, but overall it’s quite flattering. The hair looks better than it has in recent memory. The dress is both sexy and flattering to her figure, which is a balance she rarely strikes, and the cuff is a great piece of punctuation. She looks good. Well done, Brit.

  • formerlyAnon

Halston is **Halston** for a reason. Props to whomever realized that this one would stand or fall on proper fit.

As others have noted, the fakey cheesy-looking hair isn’t up to the rest of the look, but I won’t contest the WERQ.

  • mhleta

She could have used a bit more color in her face, but I agree with the WERQ. I’m so glad to see her dress with a bit of elegance and dignity.

  • Credit for not wearing (another) itsy bisty Herve Ledger.  It’s a step up for her for sure.  She looks so tense though, ease up a bit dear.

  • PeggyOC

The extensions are terrible, and I’d actually like it to be a tiny, tiny bit more nipped at the waist, but yes, you’re right.  She looks fabulous and deserves tons of positive reinforcement for going simple and classy.

  • Rachel Council

OMG, is that a natural smile? Maybe not a WERQ from me because her eye makeup continues to be terrible, but very close!

  • AWE, YOU GUYS! consider my pearls unclutched from yesterday!

  • bringbackbeatles

She looks healthy and happy. Think she could hae used a teensy bit of color on the lips, but otherwise she looks great. The dress looks beautiful against her skin tone and fits like a dream. Love the earrings, not so much the bangle, and even love the hair, which I normally wouldn’t. It’s just great to see her looking so great after the rough times she went through.

  • BrooklynBomber

She looks like a grown up. Maybe a grown up going to her company’s annual holiday party, but a grown up nevertheless. Brava.

  • moja31

eh she looks pretty good for her, but it’s nothing to write home about.

  • this girl has got some dead eyes. it doesn’t matter what she wears because she always looks like she would rather be anywhere but where she is.

  • That bracelet! Love, love, love!

  • HALSTON? From what re-incarnation? It is definetly NOT vintage. Maybe the new and reivised for the 20th time HALSTON company? I feel she looks thick in bust area…dress could shape better there. Otherwise ok…just ok. Question…has she had and work done on her nose or chin? Looks different somehow.

    • formerlyAnon

I was hoping you’d comment, given your knowledge of Halston.

  • marahe

Is that a scar on her arm in the bracelet pic? It looks suspiciously like a cutting scar…

  • Wow.  She looks more comfortable than I’ve ever seen her — she has some aging on her face and she hasn’t mutilated it to get rid of it, she isn’t stuffing herself into something too tight or too attention-seeking, she seems actually happy.  Good for her.

  • SapphoPoet

She looks lovely, age-appropriate, and healthy. Go Brit!

  • Tatiana Luján

Werq? Her hair and makeup are pure Real Housewives. Neck down: Werk. Neck up: uggggh!

  • jmorino08

Funny, she looks like a Real Housewife to me… and at least 10 years older than she actually is.

    • alyce1213

I thought so, too. Real Housewife of O.C.

  • jw_ny

The too blonde & mermaid extensions, the caked on makeup (looks kinda grey to me), the saggy boobs and poor fit of the dress in that area…nope.  I can’t see a werq at all.

I do really like the bracelet tho.

  • Wow! Debbie–excuse me, Deborah Gibson looks amazing!

Although the odd slope of the darkest of her eye shadow hues is bordering on Leeza-Gibbons-infomercial territory…

  • Makeup is off/draggy? But she does look better than some of her more recent appearances.

  • nancylee61

This young woman touches me, because she came back from the brink. Her family did the right thing, putting her in a real psychiatric hospital, UCLA. Lindsay Lohan should be so lucky.

I think she looks lovely, just older than we are used to. Her eyes may be sad, because she has seen a lot. I think childhood fame is toxic to most poeple

  • Pants_are_a_must

I don’t think she calls any shots anymore about her red carpet looks. Her stylist needs to sit down with her make up artist and have that talk.

  • frannyprof

I can’t with that hair. Yes, the gown fits, but this is not a WERQ.

  • ChelseaNH

Something about the eye makeup is making her look older than she is, for once.  Because she’s 30 and looks 40.  But then, she looks like a fabulous 40, which is way better than she usually manages.

  • She looks good, but I wouldn’t have guessed her to be Britney.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t like it much except for the side shot that shows the back which is pretty. Still much improved – except the Real Housewives hair that many have mentioned of course… until Hollywood grows out of it, we’re stuck with it I guess….

  • snarkykitten

woah woah woah she looks like Cher

  • melanie0866

One quibble:   she should have had the dressmaker sew in some support, because her girls look low and lopsided.

  • fiestyfashionfem

Yay!!!! I have an irrational and motherly love for Britney and I want her to succeed and be happy so bad.  It’s Britney, bitches!!!

  • sherrietee

She looks awesome?  I’m 43 and I look younger than she does.  The woman needs a nap, a shitton of moisturizer and needs to avoid alcohol and cigarettes like whoa.  Just … wow.

    • DCSheehan

Living hard, it’ll get you in the end.

  • Annabelle Archer

I want, so badly, for Britt to be healthy and happy.  I don’t need her to look like her 17 year old self, but really, this make up is doing her a great disservice.  She’s wearing a lovely gown with a better than decent fit and all I can think is she looks like someone else entirely.  Deborha (sp?) Gibson, perhaps?  It’s distracting and detracting from a should be highly successful fashion moment.

  • Crazy! She’s wearing a dress that goes below her knees! She looks awesome

  • Trisha26

The gown is fine. She just looks so weary around the eyes, her complexion seems to have a gray-ish cast. She’s looked like this on every ep of X-Factor so far.

  • She looks like Britney Spears’s beautiful mother.  Britney, take a nap – pronto!

  • why does her face look like a completely different person ?? Is it just the “smokey eye”?

  • The extensions are horrific, but other than that she looks FANTASTIC!  So glad to see her in something other than daisy dukes!

  • aumerle9

The dark shade in her eyelid crease is making her look like Cher!!

  • oh, and that bracelet is AMAZING

  • LauraWL

She really does look nice, doesn’t she. I mean its very Housewives of Orange County, but at least that aesthetic is something removed from her normal too-tight and too-short dresses trope.

  • Good on her for changing it up a bit.  Even she’s got to be weary of bandage dresses by now!

  • neofashionista

she looks great like almost too good like a drag queen version of herself, maybe it is the hints of dark eye shadow not sure but something is very unbrittanyish about these photos

  • Lisa Kramp

Gorgeous dress and jewelry, but what’s with the 40 year old makeup? She looks my age and she’s what, just 30?

  • thecitysleeps

I hate the dress, like hate.

  • l_c_ann

She looks pretty and age appropriate.  I hope she felt really good and understood how this is a better way to go.

  • It’s so nice to see her is something not pulled tight across her middle and cut up to her ho-ha.  Maybe she’s growing up finally?

  • it is great to see her looking sane and sober, relatively.  it’s amazing that she even survived those bad times.  i agree with others, however, who have said this doesn’t look like her.  you have to really look to get a hint of brit.

  • I don’t know, I somehow think she looks like a wax figure of herself. There is something weird or at least unfamiliar about her face.

  • alyce1213

Sure it fits, but it’s matronly and ugly, and ages her about 15 years.  Her hair (?) is ridiculous.

    • margaret meyers

I’m with you.  She makes me sad.

  • Poor thing.

  • She looks more & more like her mama everyday.

  • Love the bangle.

  • loy phillips

What a huge difference and a valuable lesson – thanks.

  • Rebecca Jay

She looks like Marla Maples, especially in the last picture.

    Nice dress.  Cheap, Claire’s-looking jewelry.

  • Presumptuous Insect

What the hell happened to her face??? I wouldn’t have recognized her.

  • Kristin McNamara

NOW it looks like her again.

  • Rrroza

darn. link won’t work for me…doesnt load.

    • Kristin McNamara

Go to the link and backspace the word “The” off the end of it. It should just end in .jpg

    • plzidgaf

yeah the formatting was off but it should work now.

  • Damn!  Judith Light never ages!

  • DylanCurtis

    Holy bad-makeup-artist Batman!

  • Presumptuous Insect

She has Cindy Crawford dead eyes.

  • Zippypie

The dress looks great.  Her vacant dead eyes, not so much.

  • Oh the scars on her arm – so sad.  After watching X-Factor I gotta say I can’t keep my eyes off her and I love that she has no filter and is so brutally honest. I think she’s basically a very misunderstood person, kind of like Marie Antoinette and I say without a trace of irony or snark (read Antonia Fraser’s book “Marie Antoinette: the Journey” and you will see what I mean.)

  • margaret meyers

NO:  blanket of hair extensions, bad neckline for her, face borrowed from someone else.

  • Mexxoo

Why do I keep seeing Felicity Huffman?  >.<

  • guest2visits

I was surprised by this tasteful, classic look for Brit; and it wasn’t too tight.  It would have been nicer with a back, then it
would have simply been a pretty gown instead of advertising.

  • ziarah

Except she looks like she’s 50.

  • Susan Carley Oliver

She looks like such a *grownup* here. And I love it!

  • Totally grading on a curve! Yes, it fits. And she didn’t pull a “Wonder Woman” with double cuffs. But her hair?

  • lucasuk82

I love everything but the eight pounds of fake hair.  A low chignon or ’40s waves in a less brassy color would make this a jaw dropper.  I actually like the eye makeup, it’s very Sharon Tate.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

I feel like the make-up has a grayish tint. It’s probably the light, but it’s a little night of the living dead!

  • lrhoff

She looks almost adult-like….I’m so impressed.  Hopefully, it will continue!

  • MissAmynae

    Well done, Gryffindor!!

  • thehousesparrow

It’s a makeup trick and the problem is, it doesn’t match her face shape and doesn’t photograph well for her. If she wants to try inner eye shadows, she should go with a far lighter color. She’s trying to simulate natural shadow under her eyes, but those inner shadows would not be that dark naturally–go with rose or dusty lavender instead, maybe.

  • quiltrx

Beautiful dress, and she looks clean at least.

But that is WEIRD makeup.  She looks photoshopped, except she’s just standing there having her picture taken.  Bizarre.

  • While I appreciate the not-skin-tight aspect and the proper hem, this gown is making her look shapeless and doing her figure and her bustline no favors. Not sure a “not a total trainwreck” qualifies as a WERQ moment unless you are just trying to offer encouragement in this general direction.

Britney Spears + “WERQ” in the same sentence is surely one of the signs of the coming apocalypse, no?  I jest because I love….. the dress.  It really does look great on her and she seems quite pulled together here.  I would say she looks just a tad “mature” for her age, I would look at this pic and think “That is one really great looking 40 yo.” But she looks good.

  • I saw the thumbnail for this pic and thought, “Huh Tory Burch? Why would TLo write about Tor…BRITNEY???”

  • Candigirl1968

Whoever helped Brit with this needs to be her permanent stylist.

  • I thought this was one of the House Wifes of where-ever.

Not a fan of the dress but her makeup looks better than it has in quite some time.

  • She’s getting old(er), this is what she needs- adult and still sexy, not Louisiana trailer park. Granted she looks a wee bit older than 31 (32?), but it’s a step in the right direction. Some tweaks, and she will conquer soft, sexy and age appropriate and put that Christina to shame (not the right direction, Christina girl!!!).

  • i think that hair & all that makeup make her look like an old whore.  sorry.
