WERQ: Ashley Madekwe in Pauline Trigere

Posted on October 23, 2012

Full disclosure: we were tweeting through last night’s “All on the Line,” in which she makes an appearance, when Ashley tweeted us back and said she was a big fan of ours. We squealed like 8-year-old girls discovering their first androgynous, sexually non-threatening boy-band crush.

“Revenge” star Ashley Madekwe attends Cameron Silver’s “Decades: A Century Of Fashion” book party in Hollywood, California in a vintage Pauline Trigere dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

But even if she hadn’t sent us the tweetlove, we’d still be snapping over this look. Girl is serving up some serious Audrey right there. We’re not a hundred percent on the hair, but she is WERQing the shit out of that dress – and it doesn’t look like it’s the easiest dress to pull off, what with the shape of that skirt. The details at the straps, along with the sassy shoes, keep the eye moving, adding just the right bit of detailing. It’s pretty, romantic and sophisticated, all at the same time.

You WERQ that updated Audrey look, girl.

  • No, no, no. The fit on the bodice of that dress is criminal for a designer gown. And her hair looks like she’s waiting to get it done, not like the finished product.

    • Well that’s the problem with vintage, isn’t it. Even if she does own the dress, I don’t think you can move that bust dart and let out the side seams without it showing. Fabric fading and all. Love the neckline.

    • CozyCat

The bodice fit seems to vary from picture to picture..   I think the hand-on-the-hip shot distorts the shape of the dress.  Unfortunately, the holding-the-clutch-in-front shot does not show the entire dress.

Given the theme of the event, an unusual vintage cocktail dress was the perfect choice, and she wears it very well!

  • Sobaika

I wish there were a bit more volume on the hair and not sure about the wrinkling/fit – but this is most definitely a WERQ. Love her!

  • TropiCarla

This reminds me I need to catch up on Revenge. As for this ensemble – I like it from the waist up and the shins down. Especially those spectacular shoes. I just can’t with that skirt though.

  • In_Stitches

I have a nagging feeling that it’s missing something to break up all the heavy blackness of the dress, but I can’t imagine what that might be.  The shoes are an inspired choice.

    •  Agreed.  I especially like that the shoes have a WHITE ankle band, rather than the expected black.  I also think a sparkly clutch would have done wonders to break up that blackness you’ve (rightly) noticed.  Since I can’t see the back of her hair I’m going to imagine it’s in a lovely loose updo….

  • Lochery

    I don’t think so, personally.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Adorable.  That’s how you do vintage WITHOUT looking twee.

  • MissFern

    Super adorable.

But where is my Rupaul recap????

  • MilaXX

It’s a nice change from her usual look, which is not much different (as far as I can tell) than the character Ashley. I do think she needs a major hair change. The weaves themselves look better this year, but the style leaves a lot to be desired and the style she’s wearing with this dress isn’t much better. I’m not a fan of ankle straps, but that’s a minor quibble. Fix the hair and I give this a WERQ.

  • yuck. have to disagree with a werq for for the first time. hair is bad and the dress looks a bit like vagina curtains.

  • crash1212

WERQ indeed. Nicely done. And just when I was thinking that Louboutin couldn’t make a cute pair of shoes if his life depended on it – lately – here these are…WANT.

  • ChelseaNH

Fix the sad little wing bangs and swap in a more colorful clutch, and she’s firing on all cylinders.

  • kschwarting

The draping and ruffling on that dress remind me of a bedspread–I was it was a straightforward bell skirt.  However, she looks good and is rocking that red lip.

  • Those straps are not doing any sorts of favors for her shoulders. Other than that I love the look.

  • TSkot

Your fanaticism with “Revenge” is influencing you here.  The brooches are oddly placed – as if they’re coming out of her armpits.  Would be much cuter without them.  And those are some ugly shoes.

  • Sara__B

The shoes pull too much focus, and her hair is … trying to be nice here … in need of help.  Not a WERQ for me, but heading in that direction.   (Now about her strangely pale hands. Is that a trick of the lighting, a spray tan done badly, or my computer monitor?)

    • Judy_J

Her hands are strangely pale on my screen as well.  In every photo.

    • Jepham

I can’t get past the pale hands. Looks like they belong to another person.

    • Qitkat

Her hands were the first thing I noticed, very odd.
Perhaps she was still wearing a twee little pair of gloves, after one of Victoria’s ill-fated garden parties, when she suddenly remembered her appointment at At The Beach, and she was so rattled, because there had been another one of those unexpected bloody disasters again, so she just wasn’t thinking straight when she stripped down to her birthday suit.

    • mountainFashionista

Funny, I’m glad I’m not the only one who was bothered by this — they just jumped right out as I scrolled down.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Sara, that was my question – what the hell is wrong with her hands??  They are several shades lighter than her arms and her legs.  At first I thought it must be darker illusion netting, but no, it doesn’t appear to be.  It looks to me like a spray tan gone wrong.  Very strange looking and totally distracting.  I like the dress and the shoes, but no way is this a WERQ with those hands and the sad little bangs.

  • Artesian_Belle

I think the shoes make the look. They keep it all from becoming too cute and precious.

  • Lilithcat

    Horrific shoes, horrific side bangs.

    • Lilithcat … hmmm, I’m really liking those shoes. I just don’t think they complement this dress very well. What if the shoes were worn with cute black shorts and a white tank? A summer ensemble in red? I think they are cute, just too casual for a formal dress with blingy attachments.

      • Lilithcat

I think the ankle strap on the shoe is ill-proportioned.  In general, I’m not a fan of ankle-straps unless the shoe is more built-up than this one.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m showing my age here.  I’m simply thrilled that she’s wearing vintage Pauline Trigere. While there may be some fit issues, but me they aren’t deal-breakers.  Those Louboutins are great with it.  Ashley’s definitely channeling some Audrey, and I’m all for that.

  • StellaZafella

I get the issues with vintage, I take into account that she’s having fun with the look. But I’ve not seen Revenge so I have to take this on it’s own merits and, at face value (including the limp hairdo) I say its a good try … but not a werq.

  • Isadora Paiva

Love the dress and shoes, hate the “open curtain” bangs.

    • kimmeister

“Open curtain” was my exact thought as well.  It’s like, “Voila, here’s my forehead!”

    • PinkLemon

jennifer lawrence has the same probz.

  • Love to see a different choice with the bangs, but that’s not an easy dress to wear.  WERQ!

ETA: Someone here clearly knows how to choose the right shade of red lipstick. Can we send them over to ‘Skipper’ Swift before my head explodes?

  • afabulous50

    I don’t see a WERQ here – but then I don’t write a fashion blog either…

  • piecesofconfetti

I loved her as Bambi in Secret Diary of a Call Girl. I have to admit that I only recently starting watching Revenge season 1 on Netflix. I’m only 2 or 3 episodes in, but wondering if it picks up a little?

  • Lisa Kramp

Lord God, is she adorable or what? Loving the hell out of that dress, and I like soft pony tail, but the booms are just weird.

    • PinkLemon

and her personal style in general is great. she’s got her own blog. and yeah, the bangs are trippin’.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I love those shoes! The dress is a fabulous balance between classic form and modern sensibility. She looks so classy! Not something one gets to say very often these days.

  • kaycem

sigh.  i was honestly hoping the upcoming AotL recap would include mention of what a demanding brat ashley seemed.  (imo she came off like she’s quite the little nightmare to work with, at least for the folks in wardrobe.)  based on this post, i expect my dreams of snark to be dashed, but i suppose i’ll live if they are lol.

  • When I was a kid my mom had a few vintage Pauline Trigere pieces.  They were vintage even back then. I remember seeing them and thinking they were the most stylish, glamorous things I’d ever seen. They weren’t overdesigned or tortured-they were just perfectly chic.  In an age when other kids’ mothers were crazy for Halston III by JCPenney, here she would put on this Pauline Trigere coat and would look timeless and infinitely chic. I think Pauline’s designs still hold up the same way, and Ashley looks amazing in that dress.

  • I can’t get past the make up.  The foundation is the wrong shade.  It gives her a waxy look.  And the shoes are too casual.  She needed a silver or beaded slipper with this.  The ankle strap fights the skirt.

  • oatmealpie

What’s with the ladystars parting their too-long bangs down the middle? It drives me crazy when Karen Gillan does it, too.

  • Trisha26

Bangs (or even BOOMS) would make all the diff. Why are her hands so pale?

    • I think it might be the flash – she also has a bleached out looking patch on her forehead and feet, which doesn’t make sense even it it were a bronzer issue.

  • the nailpolish on her fingers though….i just can’t.

  • kikisayshi

    want. those. shoes.

  • I wish I could see the shoes from the side, because I think I might love them.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

I would cut a bitch for those shoes.

  • tereliz

I’m willing to bet this dress photographs a lot worse than it looks in person. I love the skirt, but feel like Ashley and a handful of rail-thin others are the only ones who could pull it off. The embellishments are so adorable and I love the way the shoes instantly update the look.

What I like about this girl is that she understands fashion off the show as well as she wears her costumes on the show.

  • Pauline Trigere! Blast from the fabulous past! Looks better than most of what we suffered through looking at this Spring 2013

  • a_liking

sorry boys, but I just can’t with that skirt. the middle hem is too horribly distracting.

  • Go!

Looks like she has drapes attached at her waist or hips.

  • jennsilentcrow

delightfully boring, and i mean that in the best possible way. and I cant pass up the ‘put your earrings on your shoulders’ look! Call me crazy.

  • Imasewsure

I love it but I wish she had sported some big garish cocktail ring to complete the look!

  • pookiesmom

I don’t know what it is, but I can’t look at these pictures without feeling that she looks like a paper doll with the head pasted onto the body. It’s like her face make-up doesn’t quite match the skin tone of the rest of her body, and her face looks so airbrushed as to appear flat.

It’s kind of freaking me out a little, actually.

  • jw_ny

    I like it all!  🙂

  • decormaven

Those jeweled clips at the shoulder straps- perfection in my eyes. Another vote for a clutch with some sparkle. The lip color really sets off this look.

  • nannypoo

The hair is a deal breaker for me. The rest is fine, but she looks like she worked in her yard all day and thought Oh, shit, I’ll just tie it back.

  • quiltrx

Love the dress and shoes but her hair has a sad.

  • Dagney

    LOVE the shoes.

  • the makeup’s a bit vampire pale on her though? non?

  • Sal Neslusan

great outfit but a tragedy above the neck– that foundation is TOO LIGHT! and her hair looks horrid.

  • Wendi126

Her forehead is too high to wear her hair like that. It makes the top of her face look like a perfect triangle. I’m okay with the rest

  • SewingSiren

She is so pretty. Love the entire look.

  • Judy_S

As a relatively new Revenge convert, I love this because it’s so different from the short-and-tight chic she wears on that show. It’s like something her character might have been wearing in S2 if the show were set a few decades ago.

  • another_laura

Just have to make sure the spray tan extends to the hands, I’m afraid.

Not sure I’d give it a WERQ but it’s darned close.  Love the shoes with this!

  • DinahR

I agree with the WERQ!  This is so adorbs and a different enough (from what I’ve seen her in on the show and other appearances) that I think its an interesting turn.  My bangs are the same length and I have had the same dilemma — pull them back entirely or let them frame your face.  Pulling them back or sweeping to one side wouldn’t of fit as well with the mood of the dress, imo.

  • glennethph

She should make sure her make-up is blended better.  She looks kabuki-lite.

  • SophieCollier

Thought she was wearing gloves at first.  Weird pale hands illusion… Anyway, she looks adorable and the dress is really interesting and elegant.

  • RzYoung

  • Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.

  • Sorry guys, can’t quite agree. She looks cute but her hair is so wrong that I can’t agree on the WERQ.  The dress is great in a lot of ways and not great in a lot of ways. Ok, one way. That skirt. What is going on with that strange apron seaming?

  • EEKstl

    LOVE the shoes.

  • guest2visits

Very pretty; but wishing for a deeper, pink-leaning shade of lip color.

  • AthenaJ

Not liking those ‘curtain’ bangs and what they do to the shape of her face, but I WILL steal those shoes right off of her feet!!

  • oohsparkley!

Love it all! Werq!  Maybe a colored or sparkly clutch?

  • Judih1

Love the dress and shoes, the hair ruins the look

  • librarygrrl64

    Beautiful dress, great accessories. 🙂

  • MaryAtRealityTea

Oof. I am not loving this. At first I thought it was a costume. The hair is ridiculous. The look and the primness she’s deploying are painfully twee. It looks too tight and prom-y. I like the shoes. The rest is just WAY too much black. It’s like funeral barbie.

  • ccm800

no on the hair no on the fit and hell no on the 2 shades too light foundation makeup
