Scarlett Johansson in Emilio Pucci

Posted on October 09, 2012

We kind of have a history of being really hard on Scar. But it’s truly coming from a place of love – or at least, as close to love as one can get when you’re talking about someone you’ve never met. It’s just that she’s got all this great material to work with, i.e., her face, hair, and bod, and she never quite seems to get it right.

Scarlett Johansson attends Moet Chandon 250 Anniversary party in Moscow in an Emilio Pucci olive khaki peplum waist cocktail dress.

Emilio Pucci Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Jourdan Dunn

Our first reaction to these pics was to dole out the snaps and give her a “WERQ!” but that’s mostly due to the fact that we like her hair here and this color looks surprisingly good on her. Also, the silhouette is her best friend. Maybe it’s a bit too on-point that she kind of looks like a bottle of Champagne, but hey, who can blame a star for wanting to have a little fun with her clothes? Not us.

We’ll definitely give her an “Attagirl,” because she does look really good, but we’re gonna withhold the snaps because we think she should have zhuzhed things up a bit and by that we mean her breasts. Also, maybe some gold accents would have been nice. Those black pumps look too serious and a statement piece of jewelry would have been nice.

  • Is it me, or does her hair look green like she’s been swimming all day?

    • Josefina Madariaga

That’s because of the weird blue light in that red carpet. Actually, even her skin looks greenish.

    • gabbilevy

The color balance on those photos is waaaaay off. Either that, or the lighting in the room was really weird (look at the color of the shadows–greens and fuchsias, which, incidentally, are two of the options of the color correcting tool in photoshop).

      • alyce1213

Drives me crazy.  What is with the green shadows?  The dress is described as olive and looks bottle green.

        • agree, and bottle green would be a much better color for her than olive but jeez, it looks like her right arm is sunburnt in that last photo.

    • bellafigura1

The lighting is horrendous, she looks ten years older than she is.

  • You guys are right; her boobs need some more support, shoes are boring and she could’ve used an awesome cuff or something, but this is pretty damn good for her.

    • Patricia Gillett

You’re so on point with the cuff. This dress is crying out for it.

      • Introspective

i agree about some statement jewelry. me thinks scar thinks she’s got it covered with the bracelet tattoo. sadly, no.

    • Tatiana Luján

I think it isn’t a matter of support, if her breasts were higher, we would be able to see her nipples. The bustline is sitting too low, the mesh should have been shortened.

  • I would have given her a “WERQ” if she’d had her dress pressed before she came out. But she really does look great – best she’s looked in a long time.

  • hughman

She really blahhed this down, didn’t she? The dress was once a clever twist on safari wear but now she looks like Waitress Elf #3 at “A Midsummer Bite’s Dream” in Vegas.

  • AlinaValero

“and by that we mean her breasts” HA! love that. Also i don’t think it fits quite right? too long/loose in the torso maybe?

  • This is one of my favorite makeup looks on her. And I’m surprised I like her hair too– I going back and forth between “flat” and “nicely casual” and landed on “acceptably casual.” Are those tattoos on her right wrist and left forearm?

  • Are those Pucci sunglasses on the model?  I’ve been searching everywhere and can’t seem to find them.

    • They’re almost certainly Pucci (anything else wouldn’t make sense) but since it’s from the Resort 2013 collection, it’s probably not out yet. I think Resort gets released closer to the holidays (yeah, I don’t get it either. It’s because of rich people).

  • not a huge fan of those horizontal boob-seams, and the colour is a little severe.
but i like the sheer. she looks good.

    • Horizontal boob seams always make boobs look like sleepy eyes to me.
Just writing it out: horizontal boob seams – and it’s clearly something that is kind of dumb. And I looove crazy fashion.

  • gabbilevy

She looks good, but the wrinkling around her midsection is inventing a pooch where there ain’t one before. And I just rewatched The Avengers, and I really miss her as a redhead.

    • Me too! She’s fierce as a redhead. Also Hi! fellow Gab 😉

  • Violina23

Her breasts look sad. Breasts shouldn’t be sad.

  • “by that we mean her breasts”! Best TLO line today

    • BrooklynBomber

That is a great line. I’m just trying to figure out how to zhuzh them (not hers; just, you know: breasts).

  • I love this. Love it. The boobs could use some support, but the color and cut are gorgeous.

  • MilaXX

The dress is doing all  the heavy lifting. This look needs accessorizing.

  • jilly_d

personal best!  I love this on her.  And I want it on me.  Her hair and makeup looks really pretty too.  Snaps!

  • 3boysful

    Color looks great on her.

How come there were Moet and Veuve Cliquot functions and no one invited me?

  • Trisha26

I don’t like the horizontal line across the breasts.

    • YoungSally

agreed…..I’m pretty sure it’s a bra seam…..or slipping Spanx….but they make seamless bras for busty girls now too!

Oh s(&( — the model has it too…..bad bad seaming decision. If they want to do that…the dress needs more seams on it.

  • mhleta

It’s weird when you think something exactly and then you see it in print. Exactly. I love this blog, not the least because it reminds me that I’m not crazy. Or if I am, then at least I’m in really good company.

  • alyce1213

The bustline is just sorrowful — sad green boobs is not what anyone wants.  The lighting on this RC borders on psychedelic and is screwing with all the colors.
Other than that, she looks nice.

  • Anathema_Device

Yes, a little jewelry (bracelet/bangle) and zippier shoes would have elevated this from “nice” to “wow.”

  • FloTom

Sorry – not liking the hair – looks like very little effort.  She could have used some extra support for the girls, plus I like the belt on the model.

    •  I agree – I think the belt adds certain something to the model version. And why is it so wrinkled?

    • curiouserandcuriousest

I agree on both counts. The safari belt makes this something more than a standard peplum dress. And the hair is actually pretty uninspiring.

  • Janet B

Love the green on her.  Not the perfect dress for her, but not bad.

  • Dagney

I think part of the problem is that she has a BODY type of body, like a Christina Hendricks body.  I suspect stylists are just confused and don’t know what to do with her.  It’s too bad because she is the full package and could be knocking it out of the ballpark on every red carpet.

  • kcarb1025

  • AngelaGreen

Yes, and also the bodice seems too long on her.  Gorgeous girl, but not working for me 100%.

  • claudemtl777

Glad to see i’m not the only one having problems with the colours in the pic. (One red arm one white arm)
    The look is unfinished…

  • The only worry I’d have about zhuzhing her boobs is that they might get zhuzhed right up into the sheer territory. I suppose that could have been adjusted somehow, by someone who knows more about tailoring than I do. She looks good, but yeah, it could have used some jewelry of some sort. And an iron.

  • She looks great!

  • Tatiana Luján

She should have shortened the part of the dress that goes from the shoulders to the bustline.

  • I feel like her makeup is looking a little crayoned on – it’s giving her TINY eyes and I know she’s got big doe eyes like most ladystars, so that’s weird. And I don’t like that squinty eye makeup with that pale pink lip. I want to walk up to her with a q-tip and smudge it into a smokier eye.

    • kimmeister

Totally agree – that harsh eyeliner on the lower lid is doing her no favors.

    • B_C_J

You are completely correct about the eye make up. It has made her eyes practically disappear.

  • nannypoo

Well,I’ll give her a WERK because she looks just fine while that model looks like a space alien.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Post-Avengers Scarlett seems to be a very laid back Scarlett. I like it.

  • jmorino08

the lighting on that red carpet give her serious swimmer’s hair… green from all the chlorine!

  • JDreesen

i think stepping out in anything described as an “olive khaki peplum waist cocktail dress” deserves an Attagirl for sure.

  • margaret meyers

And the color here is no good for her. That green/black is tough to wear.

  • guest2visits

I love everything about this dress except that the cup portion doesn’t fit properly – it’s either too loose or too small, or maybe
it’s just a matter of the right under garment. It’s a small adjustment; but it is still a distracting one. I think she looks very pretty.

  • I like the dress, but it’s just a really wrong color for her.

  • carpediva

Agree 100% with Uncles T & Lo on all the minor gripes, but this is still a personal best for her.  LOVE the dress.

  • i think she should have kept the belt.

  • SewingSiren

I agree with everything you said. She wouldn’t have even needed to zhuzhed the breasts if that yoke hadn’t been so sheer. But it is alas. no WERQ today.

  • BazoDee

Gold cuff and gold Jimmy choo sandals or even a black minimalist sandal would have taken this to the next level.

  • Lisa Kramp

    Want that dress. So. Badly.

  • I’m distracted by the fact that it looks like she’s had some work done.  Why, ScarJo?  WHY?

    • AnneElliot

Her face does look odd.  She’s what, 30?  How can she possibly need to have anything done at that age??

  • PeaceBang

Love the frock on the model. ScarJo looks…. just fine.

  • Carlos Abreu

    scarlett WHO????

  • That lighting is pure evil.

  • In_Stitches

What’s the point of a peplum that lacks pep?  The color is great though.

  • She should have definitely worn the belt.  I just want to yank the dress up at her chest b/c its getting dangerously low.

  • Great dress on her though. Really pretty.

  • Mary229

The only thing that bothers me about this is that it looks wrinkled.  As a fellow big breasted woman, I’m going to have to disagree on the breasts.  Natural breasts sag a bit and i’m kind of over this concept that they need to be pushed up all the time as opposed to just being natural. The top fits her.  She’s not falling out of it.  A more natural breast is not a bad thing.

  • greathill

I agree with the earlier posting that she looks like she’s had some work done to her face.  she is a young woman but her face looks very different.  cheek implants, some weird work around the eyes.  too Giuliana Rancic for me.  But the dress is gorgeous and looks beautiful on her.  I should be so lucky to look like that.

  • EEKstl

Great dress and great color on her, but is it too big or just wrinkled?  Either way, looks messy.  But good showing overall.

  • mozzer0906

I think her boobs look sad in this dress, they need some more support

  • Susan Crawford

I’ve never been a fan of the coffee-filter boob effect, and on a gal with a belle poitrine, more support is a real issue. But overall, I like this on Miz Scarlett. The color, the cut and the length are all well-done. I agree that one knockout piece of jewelry would have made the look sing: I would have gone with a fabulous gold and emerald cuff. And yes, a hint of metallic in the shoes would have been nice, too.

  • lrober03

I klike everything except the peplum.  Hate the whole trend!
