Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel

Posted on October 15, 2012

After last week’s examination of the ladypants trend on the red carpet, which gave the distinct impression that ladystars and their stylists haven’t quite figured out how to wear this newfangled contraption, we’re kind of grateful to Sarah Jessica for stepping out in front of the cameras and declaring, “Ladies? This is how you do it.”

Sarah Jessica Parker attends the amfAR’s Inspiration Gala in Hollywood, California in a Chanel jumpsuit and jacket paired with Fred Leighton jewelry and a Fendi bag.

Edwardian Diamond and Seed Pearl Tassel Pendant on Cord, J.E. Caldwell, circa 1900

Not that this is perfect or anything. Those are some WIDE ladypants, and they could have used a hemming. Plus, we still hate SJP’s tendency to layer necklaces that don’t really go together all that well. And that tassle pendant shouldn’t be worn with that kind of bustline. But we like this look overall. The jacket really sells it, and there’s something kind of endearing about her sporting a big ol’ purse instead of the tampon-carriers most ladies clutch on the red carpet. She looks chic and relaxed, which is always a good look for her.

OMG the hem on those pants totally ruins it for me. She’s melting!

She can make a brown bag look good.  It’s otherworldly the things she sold on SatC.  Total Carrie outfit here.  Going to the hottest new club.

    • ecallaw1977

I wish she would lighten up on the eyeliner, but I’m still a fan.  After hearing all the good buzz, I started watching Glee again this season, and I really enjoyed SJP’s guest spot.  I hope we see more of her.

      • MilaXX

I really liked SJP on Glee. On the other hand Kate Hudson? Not so much.

      • http://michjeff-quiltersparadise.blogspot.com/ Michelle Young

I know what you mean.  Her eyes look like raisins now.  Small, dark, and wrinkled.

    • Imasewsure

I can’t even see where the hem ends and the floor begins but I think she looks great (obligatory mention of horse hair past due date not included). Love the necklaces, love the jacket. Slight rocker chick vibe. Tasteful curvy look…

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The tassel necklace is absolutely gorgeous. The rest of the outfit bores me.

      • ballerinawithagun

I love the tassel necklace. Wish it would have hung about 4″ longer with this ensemble.

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

This is when one of those necklace extenders would come in handy, because I thought exactly the same thing about the length.

    • Le_Sigh

Love how she looks here – Carrie got grown.

    • miagain

      tampon carriers….snort!

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

My bf once asked me the purpose of those teensy purses that I sometimes used when we went out, and he was legitimately shocked when I said that all it needed to fit was a lipstick, a tampon and housekeys.

        • miagain

My poor husband always ends up with my lipsticks in his jacket pocket… I hate to take a bag out in the evening.  He was once speaking at a conference, reached into his suit pocket to get his flashdrive, and pulled out my Clinique lipstick instead!!

    • BazoDee

This is the best she’s looked in ages!

      • Sartorial_She

Agree! I think the slightly softer blue eyeliner–instead of her usual heavy black–is helping quite a bit.

    • Anathema_Device

That jacket is perfect with the jumpsuit. Agree on the hem, though. How did she not face plant with that tripping hazard?

    • nannypoo

The bag is too casual for the outfit. And now someone needs to step up and say “Sarah Jessica? Your hair looks awful, and why do you persist in using your middle name, which doesn’t even work well with your first name, and if you just call yourself Sarah Parker we will all know who you are? But your outfit is cute.”

      • MilaXX

At this stage in her career why would she shorten her name?

        • j_anson

Also, isn’t there some deal where you register your screen name with the… Screen Actor’s Guild, maybe? and then that’s *your* name? Somebody else with the same name who comes later would then need to register with a different variation of the name. So there may already be a Sarah Parker. (I’ve also been wondering if this is one of the reasons actors tend to give their kids bizarre names – other than rampant insanity, that is.)

          • MilaXX

yes that’s why Vanessa Williams is officially billed as Vanessa L Williams, there is already a Vanessa Williams registered with SAG. She was in the tv show Soul Food.

          • Pinup Ghoul

It is exactly that. Many actors are actually totally unable to use their birth names because it’s already been taken! It’s also why one very, very rarely sees an established entertainer change his or her name after a marriage.

    • beebee10

I think she NAILS it. This is SJP at her relaxed best!

    • StellaZafella

I’ve worn ‘cat suits’ like this before, myself- when I was NEARLY this svelte. They rock with the right body type – but they were meant to ‘go away’ in an outfit and let the cover/jacket/jewelery…or Cha-cha sleeves take the look somewhere.

      • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

        +1 for cha-cha sleeves imagery

    • greyhoundgirl

The overly lined eyes always make her look harsh.  Her eyes are beautiful and the abundance of eyeliner hides rather than showcases them.

      • kschwarting

I couldn’t agree more.  The liner just makes her eyes look small, and IMO it ages her.

    • SewingSiren

I love the lavalier.  But you’re right the neckline of the jumpsuit is all wrong. But not as wrong as wearing those other junk jewels with it.

    • MilaXX

I actually like it better without the jacket. Without the jacket the necklaces work and my only quibbles left are that the pants need a tiny bit of hemming and I wish she would switch to the side part. I like the bag because it feels more age appropriate somehow.

      • kimmeister

Me too.  I can’t quite distinguish all the detailing on the jacket, but it looks very 80′s to me.

      • MissAmynae

Agreed. She has lovely shoulders and great arms, and her waist is teeny.  Leaving the jacket off totally works for her.

    • mhleta

I can’t really see her feet in the shots because on my screen they get lost in the dark carpet. But I really like this look. I know the word “badass” is terribly overused, but it’s a good word and she has just the right amount of it here. Layering the necklaces like this is a nice personalized “screw you.”

    • jw_ny

For SJP…this is good.  Seems she’s usually/lately off by quite a bit, this look is just a few quibbles.  I totally agree about the hem…no excuse.  I don’t mind the wide leg tho…dressier events it can often work, and does here.  I like the pendant…agree that it, and the thinnest chain/pendant should probably have stayed home.

    • http://twitter.com/dixielou8 Ashley

      I LOVE her!

    • CozyCat

I love all the jewelry, but I think that it would have looked better with any 2 of the 3.  Wearing all 3 is too many shapes at once.

Somehow she just looks better here than she has in a long time, like she’s getting more sleep, or eating better, or just got back from vacations or something.

    • luciaphile

She needs a new hairstyle and I can’t stand her eye makeup, but she looks good here.

    • kschwarting

My usual reaction to SJP is “What the…what?”  So this is a vast improvement–she could easily have stopped at one necklace, preferably one that didn’t overlap the bustline, but she looks comfortable and relatively sleek.

    • Kayceed

This looks very ’70s/’80s to me – black slinky jumpsuit topped by beaded jacket.

    • patticake1601

I don’t get the multi necklace look. FLOTUS did the same thing when the Obama’s appeared on The View (Sept. 25th).  It looked so odd.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Harris/1358701372 Linda Harris

She really needs a different hair style

    • Call me Bee

IDK…Aside from the strapless top, this look is total  “Middelwestern middle-aged lady going to a semi-fancy event but doesn’t want to buy a new dress so she wears black pants and top with a sparkly jacket” to me.  I’ve seen this outfit a million times at weddings, the theatre and myriad restaurants around here.
I love SJP, though, and she can wear whatever she’d like.  OTOH, her black eye-liner and hippie hair is getting very aging.  She really needs to change it up…

      • Kayceed

Ok, as a fellow Midwesterner your post cracked me up. Every lady of a certain age around here has SEVERAL beaded jackets. Extra points if they are vintage Oleg Cassini.

    • rainwood1

I’ll take the Edwardian pendant, please.  It’s a stunner.

    • http://remedialstitcher.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

She really needs to lighten up on the eyeliner. A softer look would look much better. This just makes her look old to me. And I’m old, so I can say that.

    • GorgeousThings

I just love that necklace! Yes, it’s not the best choice for that neckline, but it’s interesting as hell compared with some sort of diamond thingamabob that she could have worn. This is the best she’s looked in quite some time.

      • l_c_ann

I also love the closeup of the necklace.  But why does it look like a cheap tassel from a distance- it should be a stand alone and stand out piece with earrings picking up the theme subtly.

Jumpsuit really fits her well and it may look better from the back (which IS a compliment.)

    • Judy_J

I can’t help but think she’d look so much better if she used a lighter shade of eyeliner and did something different with her hair.

    • VRuss

Only wrong thing for me is that tassel necklace. Pants could use a little hemming, but they don’t bother me as much as the necklace.

      I want that bag!!!!!!!!!!

    • B_C_J

It’s a conservative look. I do like the hair. It softens the  severity of her clothes. The Edwardian necklace is exquisite. The fact it overlaps the neckline is not bothering me too much. I prefer the look without the jacket. The jacket pushes it into sportswear. Without it, the outfit looks more appropriate for an event. The pants do look too long but it’s hard to tell because the carpet is black as well.

    • SapphoPoet

      LOVE that tassel.

    • granddelusion

A jumpsuit? Really? That’s how you DON”T do it. The jacket was cute, and that’s it.

    • AnneElliot

Is it wrong that I so want a knockoff of that tassel pendant?  Because there’s no way I could afford the real thing.

And SJP looks good, but I’m so tired of her hair and the raccoon eyes.

    • formerlyAnon

With the jacket, I’d say this is pretty darn near a WERQ. Being able to wear something like THIS is reward for all the body maintenance and the time spent with stylists & assistants and tailors and more stylists. (Perhaps it’s fortunate that on this monitor I can’t distinguish the hem of the pants in the shadows. Because if they touch the floor it takes a bit away and if they puddle it’s a sin.)

Love it. Love the tassel pendant.

    • PeaceBang

This is a terrific and smart look but I still loathe the insane eyeliner.

    • samo_samo

She looks fab. Loving everything especially the bag, jacket & tassel necklace.

    • kathryn_dc

At least put the diamonds on TOP of the cord for the tassel (which, like ballerinawithagun, I wish were 4″ longer)!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I think this is a major improvement on her usual trying too hard schtick.  Love the pendant and the softer hair.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

      I only like the jewelry.

    • AthenaJ

Luv huh :)  I’m normally not the biggest fan of jumpsuits but SJP makes it work (if only the length were hemmed!).

‘Tampon-carrier’ is now my phrase of the day. Thanks TLo!

    • Janet B

I love the gorgeous pearl necklace, but the other two necklaces are out of place with it.

The entire outfit looks good, much better than last weeks offering.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I’ve never really understood how SJP achieved her status as a “fashion icon”.  She tends to choose silouttes, fabrics and accessories that dwarf her teeny, tiny frame and her hair and makeup are badly in need of an update.  So help me here … is it just because of the reflection of her Carrie Bradshaw character that she is considered such a fashionista?  (and I’ve been a fan of SJP as an actress since back in the Square Pegs days — just don’t get her fashion sense.)

    • crash1212

Looks good. I love that tassel necklace and I’m not a big fan of tassels. Pants need hemming – but otherwise, I really like this.

    • j_anson

I… actually kind of love those two necklaces together, and with that bustline. I am a fashion failure. :) I think she looks really good here, and it shows how good she can look when she doesn’t do something odd and unflattering.

    • jmorino08

What’s interesting is that this is the same event where Kate Hudson killed it in that red dress you featured late last week? As the Fug Girls pointed out, that is a wide range of red carpet choices for an event with “gala” in the name… almost as wide as those pant legs! Ooooooh! See what I did there?

    • understateddiva

I never thought that I’d say this, but girl is rockin that jumpsuit!  The proportions seldom work but she nailed it.

    • quiltrx

If she’s through with that pendant, she should send it to me.  I’m pretty sure I’d know what necklines to wear it with!

    • Trisha26

I don’t get her appeal. At all.

    • ojosazules

I love it all, even the layers of necklaces. I usually like her clutter of necklaces, unlike most people here.

    • librarygrrl64

      Want. That. Pendant!!!

    • nancy

This is a great look for her. But I wish she would lay off the eyeliner. So many women of a certain age do that, and I don’t know why. No liner on the lower lids! It ages one. (And I am of that certain age, so I know.)
