Naomi Watts in Marchesa

Posted on October 10, 2012

Looks like Miss Naomi’s work on that Princess Diana biopic has had an effect.

Naomi Watts attends the premiere of ‘The Impossible’ (‘Lo Imposible’) in Madrid in a Marchesa dress accessorized with a Louis Vuitton clutch, Chopard earrings and Christian Louboutin sandals.

Because that is straight up Dynasty-era Princess Di right there. Those are some serious shoulders. We love the occasional enhanced shoulder, but we don’t think we can sign off on this one.

YIKES.   I’m developing a real dislike for Marchesa clothes.  And this is doing nothing to help.  Retro can be great, but this is sad, over-worked, stiff, and unappealing in so many ways I can’t number them all.

      • BrooklynBomber

Welcome to the Die, Marchesa, Die club. Your membership card is in the mail.

        • Kiltdntiltd

YAY!  I feel like I just won something!  Honestly, I get ladylike, romance, and glamour, all that is great. But so often her work just looks like a pile of very expensive, lumpy laundry.

          • BrooklynBomber

Okay, well, now you’re talking yourself into a spot on the Board of Directors.

            • Kiltdntiltd

               I would be honored.

            • Ass Kicking Adviser

Always good to have new members to this club. Proud member since, well, forever.

            • Kiltdntiltd

And I feel doubly honored to be in such wonderful company as my fellow PUFs.

        • DeborahJozayt

Can we get jackets and cookies if we sign up?

          • BrooklynBomber

Jackets, why not? Cookies only for the good girls and boys who drink up all their dinner.

            • Roey Thorpe

How about bad girls and boys who drink up their dinner?

            • Kiltdntiltd

               And is there a difference?

        • lovelyivy

I am assuming the membership cards look like terrible origami napkins? Possibly attacked by a rogue bedazzler?

          • Kiltdntiltd

Oh but NO!  The membership cards, in deliberate counterpoint, are embossed, white on white, with discrete lettering only on one corner.

          • prettybigkitty

            Don’t forget the doily!

      • Sobaika

        … Developing?

        • Kiltdntiltd

          • ballerinawithagun

I thought I would be adding a comment but the above have said it all. I have been over Marchesa for quite awhile.

      • schadenfreudelicious

it’s very “hot stepmother of the bride circa 1986″…please include me as a lifetime member of the  Die Marchesa Club….

        • MajorBedhead

Me, too. I need to set something on fire. It might as well be a metaphorical ignition of Marchesa. Where’s the lighter fluid?

        • Mary Stone

“hot” as in “dewy” too — I’m assuming it was like 90 degrees and humid in the shade in Madrid at this premiere, and that’s why her face is shiny (?) or is that part of the look too?  Serious 1980’s power shoulder going on there….

    • Isabel

      Another white dress RC trender!

    • foodycatAlicia

Dress is a skosh too tight and having so much “interest” around the shoulders with the hair out seems weird. Plus the shoes seem way too clumpy for the dress. But it does buy into your white dresses trend.

      • MoHub

Needs to go up a size. This makes her look as if she has saddlebags, and I’m sure she doesn’t.

      • RebeccaKW

I might like it better if the hair wasn’t down.  And those shoes are terrible.  They are kind of cute in the side image (with no foot), but they look terrible straight on.

        • kimmeister

Agree with all of your points.  I kind of like the dress on the model, partly due to the belt and partly because her hair isn’t in the way.  But on Naomi it just looks exactly as TLo said – straight out of the Dynasty wardrobe.

    • RzYoung

OH no, my first thought when I saw this was ‘Madonna’ :(

      • MissMariRose

Same here. The resemblance is uncanny … and disconcerting.

      • charlotte

Madonna with whipped cream on her shoulders.

      • Aurumgirl

         Me too.

    • 3boysful

I could live with the shoulders if the thing actually fit her torso–way too tight!
Moreover, that orange-y blonde hair color is not doing her any favors.

      • shirab

And the roots! What is it with these ladystars and their dark roots?

        • schadenfreudelicious

seriously!, does she not have access to a colorist who could find a more flattering shade and touch up those roots?

    • Funkykatt

Marchesa has the tendency of reminding me of my horrid high school prom Gunne Sax dress and this is no different.

      • Heather

Yes, Gunne Sax all the way! Plus, the shoes are hiddy. They look OK in the profile photo, but terrible ‘on.’

On the other hand, she looks great otherwise, and I like her gold pedi.

      • ballerinawithagun

Gunne Sax wasn’t horrid at the time, we just don’t need to re-visit.

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

My thoughts exactly. Not a trend that needs to return.

    • LadyCelia

Looks like Ven designed the sleeves.

      • DinaSews

Yes! I thought the same thing.

    • In_Stitches

The styling isn’t helping.  It’s an 80’s silhouette in an old Hollywood fabric; with that many nods to times gone by, the styling needs to be a bit fresher.  Shellacked hair, matte red lips, big diamonds and grandma’s orthopedic sandals weren’t the way to go.  A messy bun, dark eyes, and a pale lip might have helped.

      • 3boysful

         You are good!

    • SewingSiren

I like they way it looks on the model, but Naomi styled it all wrong, too much hair, lipstick, earrings, and purse, not enough belt. One size up and way less accessories  and it could have been a huge hit.

      • Tess Danesi

Totally agree. It looks fresh and fab on the model, perhaps because the shoulders are the only element that stand out, and yet it looks so dated on Naomi.

    • call_me_schmeg

i think it’s the combo of the marcel waves and the dynasty shoulder that gets me. retro mash up!

    • BrooklynBomber

Not the worst Marchesa in the world, but that doesn’t make it good. Good shoes for the dress, though. But the hair is doing her no favors; that shade of blonde doesn’t work with her skin color at all.  Naomi: time to embrace the brunette!

    • nc17

I saw this on another site and said “Girl, that is Not your dress.” –I’m on this site too much, lol

      • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I say it in my head when looking at women in public now. I call it the TLo effect.

        • nc17

          lol, so true:)

    • Anne

You can always tell which of the celebrities featured on this blog have never HAD to wear shapewear before.  If you’re going to wear a really tight dress, for pete’s sake smooth it out!

    • Janet B

The shoulders aren’t as interesting on Naomi as on the model, plus Naomi is styled all wrong for this dress.

      • folu0330

Exactly. I think this is more of a “girl that is not your dress” the model is styled better for the dress and having her hair down makes it look much more retro.

    • Judy_S

I like Naomi Watts quite a bit, but not in this. Having lived through the 80s shoulders and liked them a lot at the time, I have decided at this late date that they are just no good.

    • tsid2012

I am an unabashed Naomi Watts fan and an equally unabashed marchesa detractor. Girl, stay away from Mrs. Weinsteins crap!  However, that clutch is FAB!!

      • kimmeister

You know, I hadn’t even noticed the clutch because everything else was so terrible, but you’re right, it IS fab!

      • DaringMiss

        Yes…that clutch is drool-worthy!

    • Austen Jane

Nope. I do like the shoes, though.

    • Jangle57

Looks like the dress was designed by Ven

      • Gabriella M

I was thinking that, but he never was creative enough to put the roses on the shoulders or anywhere but the bust or thighs, really, no?

    • Liana Brooks

No, sweetie, just no. The only person who needs that much shoulder padding is playing football. Be proud of your slender figure and ditch the padding.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh Dear God, no. The humongous shoulders of the 80’s are back? I’m going to sit in a corner and cry about that one.

    • Cathy S

NO. And those shoes just look wrong. Pumps would be better, I think. You know, if you HAD to wear that dress.

    • nannypoo

The shoulders are hilarious. And it looks like she needs to stop coloring her own hair in her bathroom and find a professional to do it.

    • Susi R

She looks like she’s going to her 1980s prom. : /

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Totally 80’s bridal.  Like, totally.

    • Stella Zawistowski

      I actually…don’t hate it?

    • Chuck Barthelme

I almost wonder if this would have worked had she had her hair pulled back tight. I feel like if you’re going to do huge shoulders, hair flowing down like that sort of gives the impression you don’t have a neck, and adds to the illusion of broadness across the shoulders. Pulling the hair back and accentuating the neck might have avoided that issue though. Not crazy about the look in general though either.

    • Patricia Gillett

Needs the belt that the model used (and whatever the model did to get things so smooth. Also, a look attempting to be this retro-80s glam demanded a much better ‘do that her beach hair.

    • Nancer

Sorry, but I actually like this look – a lot! My only critique (because, of course, there MUST be one) is that it is a bit snug through the waist and doesn’t fall quite right. But that is a quibble. I think she looks fabulous. Bring on the shoulder pads!

      • formerlyAnon

You rock ’em, woman! I’m sitting them out, this time around, but I had a few big-shouldered ensembles that I quite fancied myself in, back in days of yore.

    • Gabriella M

I would like the shoulders more if they weren’t accompanied by that hotel bedspread material. I like an enhanced shoulder but the material makes it uber 80s retread.

    • AnnaleighBelle

I don’t understand her make-up at all – it makes her skin look both dry and greasy at the same tim.

      • MilaXX

when retin A first came out years ago, I tried it and that’s exactly what my face looked like, dry and greasy at the same time. Like I had a mask on that needed to be washed off.

    • Little_Olive

The first mistake is that upholstery from a mob’s couch they used as fabric.

As per usual with Marchesa, the detailing (=shoulders) could have been intricate and stunning but just ended up tacky.

      Wrong shoes.

    • lehen

      ugh.  marchesa.

    • jilly_d

yikes.  but that clutch is totally fabulous.

    • BazoDee

      EWWW -and the shoes!! UGH!

    • Kim Kantarakis

If it had a v neck, she would be a dead ringer for Maddie Hayes.

      • AnnaleighBelle

        I SEE it!

    • kolokOlchik

I actually like the dress, but those shoes are too summery and don’t go with it

    • ecallaw1977

Odd, I actually am finding that I love the shoulders, even though they remind me of Ven.  Somehow the shoes just don’t seem right to me though.  They seem too soft to go with the dress.  It is a Dynasty bitch dress, and needs the appropriate shoes.

    • MilaXX

Oh this is bad. Dynasty shoulder aside, the dress looks somehow lumpy on her, the shoes are too heavy for the dress, the makeup has been applied with a trowel and the hair is pure 1980’s Kylie Minoque. Not a good look at all.

    • Janey

Everything but the shoulders. Because I think this could have been a WERQ if it wasn’t for those monstrous shoulder thingies on her shoulders.

    • Deedles

WHOA. My mother is flipping right now over all of this white after Labor Day. SHAME!

    • sweet_potato

The shoulders are annoying but that bodice fit is simply unforgivable.  And yes, it’s also stiff and overworked.  But then again, I’ve never been a big Marchesa fan.

    • B_C_J

This dress is a good example of how a poor fit can really ruin a look.  Then again, the look was ruined right from the start with those football player shoulder “things”.  UGH!

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

Alexis Carrington’s wedding dress. One of her many. Horrible dress. Hideous fabric. Uck.

    • guest2visits

To keep it from being too fussy and to play down the big features of the dress, she should have kept it sleek and simple
like the model – with the hair, the accessories and the shoes.  For some reason Naomi often dates herself with clothing choices.
I like the dress; it just seems specific to an occasion (bridal), and a way to style it.

    • jmorino08

I think if her styling was more in line with the model’s it would look better and more modern. The big hair and pancake face take her all the way to Linda Evansville!

    • FashionShowAtLunch

Fantastic shoes.  See, it is possible to wear a shoe in the neutral family that is not a silly putty platform pump. Take note, stylists.

    • MzzPants

Except Diana’s clothes always fit properly.  This is too tight through the waist and hips.  Hair looks fried.

    • Judy_J

      Krystle Carrington.

    • Shawn EH

I dunno, she’s kinda working it.

    • Larkin21

Something about the make-up isn’t working for me either.

    • Carla_Charlton

Look at that unpressed hem!  Look at the face shine and terrible hair!  Bad all the way around.

    • ojosazules

Strangely, I like this. It’s a little tight, and the shoulders look like they have fast rise yeast in them, but for some reason, I like it.

      • PinkLemon

it’s great! the model’s working it better, though. she shoulda kept the belt

    • Gus Casals

Ohhh, can’t get the Dynasty AND Dallas themes out of my head now. Love her mischievous attitude, girl is having fun with the cray-cray shoulders.

    • Bert Keeter

TOO DAMN TIGHT! Skirt is riding up over her hips! Honey…if it does’nt FIT don’t wear IT! DUH?

    • j_anson

You… can’t pose with your hand on your hip in those shoulders.

    • susan6

Call me crazy, but…..she’s got Madonna’s left eye.  Seriously, look at her face.  Her left eye looks like Madonna.  Her right eye doesn’t.

Oh, um, the dress.  Yeah, Krystle Carrington called, she wants her outfit back.

    • patticake1601

You can see the belt loops!!!  My pet hate!

    • n a

Is it just me, or does she look like Madonna here? I think it’s the mid 2000 Madonna face with the 1980s Madonna clothes…

    • IAmJ

I’m not in love with the original styling to begin with, but it definitely benefits from the belt. Losing the belt was a mistake. The fit is very much off on Naomi, but the real disaster here is the hemline. Atrocious.

    • RocknRollmom

The first time I saw this pic, I thought “Madonna has well and truly gone off the cliff!”  To find out it was Naomi Watts left me speechless.  Whoever did this to her should be taken out at dawn and shot.

    • Imasewsure

Like the shoes. Hate the dress and the Madonna head

    • Alyssa T. Robot

haters gonna hate, but i like this look. not crazy about the dress but i love her hair and makeup and accessories enough – they make dress do-able for me.

      • Alyssa T. Robot

and… after browsing the comments, it seems i am squarely in the minority. no one will concede that she looks pretty though?

    • kschwarting

I love Naomi Watts–she’s gorgeous and talented, but why is this thing making her look so bulky and lumpy in the midsection and thighs?

Edited to add: Oh, because it’s Marchesa! Of course!

    • Sara__B

      Nice shoes.

    • EEKstl

J’hate.  Didn’t work in the 80’s, no reason it would work now.  And for Chrissakes, that HEM!

    • Tina

      oh, so bad.

    • Trisha26

I really like the belt on the model, it softens the serious shoulders. But why is the fabric bunching up? Those dark roots and messy styling aren’t helping.

    • RoxieRider

I fell like she’s never looked blonder.

    • Ashleigh Boutelle

      love the clutch

      • sleah_in_norcal

yes!  and the earrings and the shoes.  i like the play on the shoes between the textured bright white, the ivory and the gold.  and unlike TLo, i love an ankle strap stiletto.

    • mmc2315

      Bad 80s flashback for me.

      • Dagney

Yes.  I thought, why is she wearing Joan Collins’ dress?

    • MissAnnieRN

When it’s not clear whether your dress was designed in 1984 or 2012 there is a problem. That fabric looks cheap as hell.

    • l_c_ann

I wish starlets would stop adding horizontal folds to their borrowed dresses.

    • SublimatedRage

When I saw your first line, I thought “What effect?  To transport her back to the 80s?”  I was relieved to see that you felt the same thing.  I love the fabric, but the silhouette is dated.

And those shoe!  I know they are terribly expensive and designer, but from the front, that taupe and wide toe strap looks like old-lady orthopedic shoes!  From the side, the shoes are pretty….

    • Rain Jezek

Something is very wrong with the fit for it to be creasing across her torso that way. With the belt and with a properly fitted torso the look is really cute. I think the fabric choice is what takes it more into Dynasty-era, that heavy upholstery fabric is right off of the couch in a room where some crazy bitches with teased bangs threw wine at each other. In a less textured and/or shiny fabric, properly fitted and with the belt, the sleeves would elevate the look to being fun. Oh and with her hair up, down is no good with this dress.

    • Christine

My time machine does work! We landed right in the 80s!

    • formerlyAnon

      Just no. No.

    • Monabel

      Dress is wonky/

    • Nico

      i like it :)

it looks like some shit that Ven designed

      • Sara LaBatt

I was waiting for that. Ven’s going to be pissed that someone stole his idea.

    • Candigirl1968

This looks like she’s going to an ’80s party.  Not loving the shoes either.

    • Presumptuous Insect

What is with the greasy skin?  Was she made up to look that way? WHY? WHY?

    • Toto Maya

I think this could have been saved by better hair and makeup, but she failed in that regard and it looks silly.

    • Rebecca

I think they might work on a brunette, who is wearing her hair up, in order to make the shoulders look less padd-y and more avant-garde-y.

    • Lisa

Sheeeeya… no.  I wore something just like this to a college spring semi-formal in 1985.

    • ccm800

Better foundation garments would have helped

    • Winnie Alston

Ill fitting, swirly brocade (?), Seinfeld puffy sleeves, and to top it all off, that’s one busted-assed hem.

    • quiltrx

I have kind of a soft spot for poofy sleeves…I was kind of in that era.  You should see the sleeves on my wedding dress. :)

(that being said, I don’t mind this particular dress, EXCEPT the stiff, make-your-underboobs-sweat-looking fabric.

    • allj

I’m really irked that she didn’t wear the belt, but the loops are still on the dress. You seriously couldn’t snip those off?

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

You could so hide some extra vanilla wafers in those sleeves – you know, for later if you were hungry or if you happened upon a daycare center in need.

    • HK4Seven

That hem is making my eyes cross.  Pressing works people, try it!
