Marisa Tomei in Christian Dior

Posted on October 31, 2012

After the industrial accident of an outfit she wore last time we checked in on her, it’s comforting to know that Marisa has found her way back to her version of chic:

Marisa Tomei attends opening of Christian Dior boutique in Beverly Hills, California in head-to-toe Christian Dior.

Christian Dior Spring 2013 Shoes

That’s the Marisa we know and love. A statement dress, statement shoes, and virtually nothing going on north of the neck. Normally, we think her clean face and casual hair work when she pairs them with high end looks, but just this once, we think she could have used a little buffing and polishing of the head area.

The dress is a tough one to pull off, but we kind of love it on her. We could take or leave the shoes.

    I like the shoes.

    • 3boysful

I LOVE them.  (But probably not enough to pay what they undoubtedly cost.)

  • Yes, this is perfection. So glad she wore the shoes. No other pair would do for this dress

  • MilaXX

Love the dress, love the shoes, like the lip, but not the blush & wish she had better hair. Overall a good look that could have been great.

    • muzan-e

Oh my, the blush.  That Pantone colour of the year thing has a lot to answer for.

      • EveEve

The lips are clash-o-rama.  Love the dress and shoes.

  • CPK1

yay. I LOVE Marisa’s style. will try to forget the hammer pants and hideous shirt of last time

  • I would like to see the back of that dress, because you can tell that it plunges deep at the sides. I really like it, it’s unconventional and yet chic.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Love the look, if not the hair.  I appreciate how she’s someone who always seems to have a certain look without ever appearing costume-y.

  • Introspective

Loving th snark of “industrial accident”… So here, speaking of accidents, Her makeup if there is any looks like a rash is rising from her cheeks that should be checked out.

But besides that misstep I think our Marisa is back to form. And not a moment too soon might I add…

  • A bajillion times better than that “ensemble that shall not be named.”

  • What a great, ultramod take on a swing dress. I do agree with you, TLo, that she needed to do a bit with hair and makeup to make this really sing.

  • JasmineAM

Those heels look razor sharp, literally.

  • I really like this. Though she does need to do some blotting on her face, it’s a bit shiny. I wished it fit her just a bit more like it does on the model. I realize it’s not supposed to be fitted, but it’s a bit too big on her.

  • newleaf1

I like the shoes.  And the clean face, especially on someone around my age, is kind of refreshing.  Hair a bit of a mess.  But she looks pretty good.

  • The shoes look SO painful. The heel, the back strap, the tight toes, the metal thing that will probably scrape your foot to death if you actually try to walk — this shoe was made by someone who wanted to see women hurting.

And the dress is sort of ridiculous.

  • jilly_d

LOVE!  I think she looks really young and hip.  Want. those. shoes. on my feet.

  • This is one of those “I love this but could never wear this” dresses. I just love a pink and black stripe. Yes, the shoes look ultra-uncomfortable, but they are just so spot on.

I love Marissa’s face. She is one of the few actresses who has aged naturally into her face, and I have come to love her much more than I did in her youth. I like the naked look here. The flyaways on the hair need fixin’, though. A little Elnett would have gone a long way.

    • l_c_ann

I looked up her birthday.  Her wiki says she was born in 1964.

She looks much younger in these photos; lucky lady.

      • kschwarting

That is just what I was thinking–I don’t know whether it is the flushed cheeks or the fact that her face is a little rounder than the average super-skinny actress, but she looks really youthful here.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t tonk the lipstick or the blush are a good match for her coloring, they look fake on her and completely clash the pink of the dress and that pink does suit Marissa. The shoes look painful. Love the dress.

  • I like that she avoided twee – this could tip into little girl party dress very easily!

  • jw_ny

This is the kind of quirk that Marisa has the ability to pull of…love the dress and shoes.

She obviously has makeup on, but still looks to plain…I don’t get it.  Perhaps liner/mascara under her eyes.  Her “yoga” hair is not helping either.

  • That shade of pink always looks like a red sock got into the wash to me; but she is great for really graphic looks. It’s a good dress for a tiny girl.

  • Janet B

Very pretty dress on her.  I like the shoes, a lot.

  • RzYoung

I love it all on her too, I almost don’t mind the non-make up actually

  • I love those shoes.

  • mjude

not quite sure what i think about the dress.  not a fan of the shoes, they look lethal.

  • I love the dress and the shoes.  The hair and make-up, OTOH, are terrible.  And how did she apply her blusher…with a spray bottle?

  • mhleta

Boy, do I want to like this dress, and I almost do, but the folding in the front is not visually pleasing. It looks like some sort of bizarre maternity/nursing dress, where you shove the baby up under the flap to latch onto a boob. It looks like it was designed to hide a flawed figure, which she does not have. I wish it had less volume, because I like the idea of it. Love the shoes. Fine with the hair and makeup.

    • Alisa Rivera

I keep thinking it looks like a giant tongue hanging off the front of her dress. She’s beautiful but the dress is just flat-out unflattering.

    • I’m not feeling the dress either.

  • beebee10

    such a great personal style

  • I feel like this would work more if she’d gone for something slightly 60sish with her makeup. Not fullout costume, but an updated cat eye or something would have made this look (which says modern-day Umbrellas of Cherbourg to me) pop.

  • crash1212

Love the dress. Love the shoes. Love the typical Marisa face. Love her.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Um, if she did any more buffing and polishing on her face, it might catch fire!  Looks like she forgot to rinse a mask off before she ran out the door.

  • SapphoPoet

I love the dress and the shoes, but agree she needs more above the neck; she looks oddly unfinished. Also, her blush looks a little odd to me. But overall, a strong outfit.

  • ballerinawithagun

Love the dress, wish I were tall enough to wear this style.

  • Considering she’s pushing 50 and looks like a teenager, I’ll take all of it.

  • BrooklynBomber

I keep thinking that’s a parrot sitting on her shoulder!  She looks great, though.

  • Love the whole look. Really works on her. That dress is not at all my kind of thing but it sure is Marisa’s.

  • Imasewsure

I love the shoes but not with this dress…. not sure if I like the dress but that’s a good thing. Hair and makeup awful but I still love the fact that she keeps it simple overall. Love her…

  • sweet_potato

I love the dress and the shoes. In fact, while I couldn’t “pull off” that dress, I could rock the shit outta those shoes.

  • Trisha26

I love the pink & black stripe and the basic shape, but all that pleating nonsense has me confused. The shoes are horrible. It looks like she forgot to do her hair.

  • EEKstl

Below the neck I give her props – it’s a strange but compelling dress, and like the shoes.  But this dress DEMANDS either a dark smoky eye and nude lip or a neutral smoky eye and a strong lip.  She did neither here.  And the hair is a boring mess.

  • kimmeister

Now I want some Neapolitan ice cream.

  • SophieCollier

I think the shoes were a great idea with this dress.  She looks very chic and pretty.

  • decormaven

Other than needing a bit stronger eye makeup, this is an ensemble that works! A sleeker topknot would have polished it off to perfection.

  • annamow

In love with those shoes. Would place them on my mantelpiece. (Couldn’t wear them – I’d break my ankle trying!)

  • AzulFashion

I don’t know.  It looks more like a Halloween costume; pink and black bumble bee,

  • PaulaBerman

I did not recognize her AT ALL.

  • Contralto

She’s very cute and I dig the outfit.  Much better.  She needs some earrings and something done to the hair.  Swipe of mascara would help, too.

  • Le_Sigh

I love this on her.  The shoes are pretty fun – i think the pink strap gives them a nice odd-edge kick over a plain pointy toe.

Also looks comfy as hell (the dress not the shoes).  I mean, as comfy as a dress that costs as much as two months of my rent could be 🙂

  • editrixie

Good God, I LOVE those shoes. If you leave them, I’ll take them.

  • oohsparkley!

Those shoes are so cool! The color seems a little off, but the style is perfect for the dress. If she’d worn some dangly earrings, smoothed the flyaway hairs, and a different shade of lipstick. She’d have been perfect.

  • I love this look on her, but she really needed to fill in/define her eyebrows, and maybe add a flick of black eyeliner to keep the focus on her face. Otherwise, I really like (but not love) the dress on her, love the shoes paired with it to mimic the stripes, and LOVE the hair and blush. All in all, a good showing, in my opinion.

  • allisankelly

This woman does not age. I love the idea of the dress, but not the execution. I like the shoes.

  • librarygrrl64

Wow, I REALLY dislike that dress. Like the shoes, though.

  • Like the dress on her and LOVE the shoes.  So refreshing to see non-hoofed feet.  She could’ve bumped up the hair & makeup a skosh.

  • TieDye64

Love the shoes, hate the dress. Also, her blush is scaring me.

  • Amy

I could take or TAKE the shoes! I’ll have the dress too! (but it won’t look that great on me)

  • lesmaha

This look, except for the shoes, is not doing it for me….

  • guest2visits

Love the shoes with this dress; they look like they were made to go together.
I think she needs a different lip color, possibly a different way to style the hair – but she looks so much better, and younger, too.

  • formerlyAnon

Not a universally flattering dress, but it works.

    I LOVE the shoes.

  • LeifBallard

To be honest the only thing I LOVE are the shoes

  • altalinda

I love the shoes so much that I am overlooking my usual hatred of pointy toes.

  • Kowa Mattern

    LOVE the shoes

  • anneland

    LOVE the shoes.

  • hazydaydreams

    Holy bajeebus, shoes.

  • So totally IN. I love her in this and those shoes are amazing.

  • I have to disagree on the shoes, they are to die for.  And they look amazing with this dress!  Her hair, though, needs an intervention.

  • kirkyo

10/10. How is this the same person that wore that truly awful getup the other day? That was the worst thing I’ve seen on this site all year.

  • mia

Don’t know what she did to her face since the last time I saw it, but in this picture, a good ten years are gone

  • gg80302

She looks fresh and comfortable (despite the intimidating shoes!) What is the back of the dress like?
