Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior

Posted on October 23, 2012

Marion looks pretty great here, right?

Marion Cotillard attends the 16th Annual Hollywood Film Awards Gala Presented by the Los Angeles Times in a Christian Dior dress.

Christian Dior Fall 2012 Couture Collection/Model: Tilda Lindstam (IMG)

Are we being less critical than we should be when we say it all looks pretty good to us? She’s so very Mademoiselle Dior and the house just suits her to a T. It’s a very cute, very Dior kind of dress. Love the jewelry; love the retro hair; love the clean face. Maybe not so in love with the shoes, which seem kind of focus-pull-y, but top-to-almost-bottom, it’s a chic and oh-so-French look, which makes it the perfect look for her.

Love love the dress, but she seems kind of underdressed from the neck up to me.

    • Mary229

A slightly brighter lip would have done the trick for me.  I don’t actually hate the coral shade on the model.  But even a slightly more pigmented berry.  That would have pulled it all together for me.  Still, she’s stunning.

      • EditKitten

        Agree on the lipstick.

    • Sobaika

Her neck is begging for a necklace.

    • jmorino08

I agree. Needs a necklace or something more dramatic going on with the face to balance it out.

    • I agree. How about some earrings to gussy up the look?

  • Nicholas

We need a “tragic shoes” here. I like the nail polish.

  • I think the hair needs a little more oomph to make it look more like victory rolls, less like dragged-back-with-combs. I like the dress, I hate the shoes, LOVE the bracelet.

  • There are aspects that make me less inclined to agree: namely the distinct impression that the entire dress seems to sit too low on her frame – – Hoik it up 2 or 3 inches and then I might be less distracted by the nascent Minnie Mouse ears starting to grow on her head.

    • MoHub

Yep. Sagging up top and dragging at the bottom.

    • BrooklynBomber

I agree: the whole thing seems to be pulling downward.  But even in a dress that’s wrong for her, she looks great because she has that indefinable “something,” that “it” that transcends whatever she’s wearing.

    • moppet

I’m glad someone else saw the kitten ears. It’s hard for me to evaluate the rest of the outfit because of that hairstyle.

  • I wish the hemline was a little shorter, for some reason it looks off to me there.  I think if it were shorter, the shoes would be better with it. (I do love their shiny silver-y-ness though)

    • Sweetvegan

I thought the same thing – the dress is too long on her. On the model, you can see that it’s suppsoed to be a mid-calf length dress. On Marion, it’s too long, and it overpowers her.

      •  YES!! I didn’t even pay attention to the model, but you’re totally right!

      • VeryClaire

I think the hem length would be fine if the dress was balanced on top.

  • Merveilleux

  • Hate the hair, love the dress.

  • MilaXX

She looks great, but maybe some earrings?

  • Vanja

    • Karen Ulric

Oh good!  I like the dress, but I’m glad I’m not the only one who had this reaction!

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Whoops – great minds Vanja, I should have read through before I posted myself!

      • Vanja

🙂 It’s not just the dots but also the shape of it and more so the Marion version than the model’s.

    • MoHub

Not quite. Not when you can see her feet. That was the whole point when Terry Nation created the Daleks: They were scarier because you couldn’t see the operators’ feet, taking away any humanoid quality they might have had.

  • thecitysleeps

    She is perfection.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

    • VeryClaire

She is gorgeous, which overcomes any small flaws in the dress.

      • Kristin McNamara

And looks SO young here. She is 37 YEARS OLD, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. She looks freakin phenomenal.

    • Agreed. Lovely.

  • Almost there, just needs a simple, shiny necklace. Other than the too-bare neck, it’s a perfect look. Love the dress.

  • I do think she could have been better served by some kind of necklace. Otherwise, it’s classic Dior! Love it.

  • Judy_S

She looks lovely to me, just perfect, because she seems so natural and comfortable.

  • She’s beautiful, but looks a bit like an (extremely glamorous) Dalek.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

    Dalek dress.

Which is to say – I like it!

  • Jackie4g

Firstly, it’s an altogether lovely look on a lovely girl. I like a tea length dress. The shoes are fine. Perhaps the neckline could benefit from a strand of pearls or, failing that, pearl and saphire earrings. When you have this classic a look, you need classic jewels.

  • Mary229

I think the dress is lovely but I would have loved to have seen a different hairstyle and a more finished lip of some kind.   But her skin is flawless and as usual she is such a pretty woman.

  • SapphoPoet

The dress looks a bit long on her and as someone else commented, she looks bare on top. However, she looks very pretty overall. I love the blue and black together.

  • zombie_nurse

Adorable, but from the front shots her hair looks like subtle kitty ears- which actually also looks adorable on her.

  • Judy_J

She does look lovely.  I just wish she’d worn some sort of necklace to break up the expanse of skin up top.

  • Mia

I love the dress, although the hem of the dress does seem too long on her. Love the hair, but I agree-she needs to boost the make-up and change the shoes.

  • RzYoung

She looks stunning and she’s aging backwards!

  • Pants_are_a_must

The dress is just the wrong length on her, in my opinion. Either make it half-calf length or floor-length. At this length, she’s stumpy and those shoes are BAD.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

It says a lot that she looks as great in Raf Simons’ Dior line as she does in Galliano’s.  The black-and-blue combo works so well here.

  • decormaven

Perhaps some type of bejeweled hair adornment? The look needs some type of accent at the top as a finishing piece. This dress is familiar- has another star worn it on the RC?

  • quiltrx

That is a fabulous dress!  Looks like she was born to wear it, too.

  • Jessica Goldstein

I agree about the shoes but find myself not caring. She looks great, and I love the dress. This is a WERQ for me.

  • nannypoo

I don’t like the length or her hair, but it all looks great on her anyway. She’s fabulous.

  • Anathema_Device

Gorgeous! She needs some showy earrings with this. I’d have skipped the necklace, too, as her neck and chest look so pretty. But yes to earrings.

  • Dhammadina

She does look great but also like she is wearing a shower curtain.

  • mmc2315

Very pretty & flattering.  As others have mentioned, the dress is a skosh too long, and everyone needs to check the floor because she apparently lost her necklace.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Dearest T&Lo, I think you need to add fingernails to your matchy matchy do not list.  Marion looks pretty fabulous here and all I can see are those damned matchy blue fingernails.

  • I’m not liking the length. Nit-picky?

  • VeryClaire

She’s beautiful, and the dress is lovely in some ways, but strapless longish dresses always seem off-center to me. Like the dress is trying to slip down to ground. The proportions are off, heavy on the bottom and bare on top just doesn’t work for me (the dress is sitting rather low on her chest, too). If it had some kind of a strap for balance it would be a gorgeous dress.

  • Agreed, but wish the skirt were a little shorter and there was more volume in the skirt.

  • Dot

I bet that skirt looked beautiful in motion, as she walked.

  • EveEve

Beautiful but unfinished without earrings and/or necklace to pull it up to the top. And the blue fingernails are too matchy and juvenile for such a classic dress.

    • sweetlilvoice

Have to agree about the juvenile nails. And she couldn’t wear some jewelry?

  • Violina23

Love the dress, but I think it’s too long on her

  • Call me Bee

  • Lilithcat

Not a fan of the shoes.

  • The dress seems too long to me.  And it also needs a good old hike northward.

  • But the hair?

  • It’s too long. It would look better at the length shown on the runway.

  • LLuL

I vote no on the Judy Garland hair.

  • miagain

    oh what a beautiful dress….

  • VicksieDo

LOVE it all except for the bluish nails.  Blue nails make me think of being cold.

  • DinahR

Pretty, but I think she needed something at her neck.

  • kschwarting

I absolutely love her style.  And thank G-D she’s not wearing the model’s awful makeup!  A clean face beats a cray-cray one anytime.

  • Don’t like the nail polish, and the girl could have used some earrings.  Nothing approaching chandeliers, mind you, but some pretty studs or simple hoops would have finished off the look.

  • melanie0866

  • Cathy S

I’m going to complain. The dress is too long on her–the model’s version has a better length. And she needs something around her neck–maybe not as big as the choker the model has, but something. And I hate her shoes. The dress is pretty though.

  • Frank Li

The only complaint I have is that the dress needs to be shortened a bit.

  • Zippypie

It’s that awkward length – too long for a short dress and too short for a gown.  But the dress itself is pretty.  Agree with other kittens that she needs a necklace or earrings – the look is incomplete.  And the shoes suck.  But she is so lovely.  Just lovely.

  • Perfection. She looks lovely.

  • judybrowni

Dress too long and gawky — and why is Marion wearing two lumps of hair on the top of her head?

  • Maybe it’s just the angle the photo was taken at, but the hem seems a touch long to me.

Other than that, I LOVE this dress.

  • notanotherusernameforchrissake

eh.  looks like mouse ears are incubating up there.

  • glennethph

It’s almost like she’s half-assing it.  Well, 3/4th-assing it.  There’s something missing to make me gasp.

  • ThaliaMenninger

  • EEKstl

You all know how much I LUV HUH and that dress is stunn-ing, but I wish she’d done a bit more with her makeup.  Probably just a stronger lip color would have done it.

  • Love the dress, love her in the dress, HATE her hair, and why is she not wearing makeup? Disappointed.

  • piecesofconfetti

She’s lovely. I wish she’d lose and inch or two on the hem and find some better shoes, though.

  • Lisa Kramp

A darker lip and a pair of lovely black chandelier earrings, not large, would have made this a WERQ.

  • she looks like she just got done teaching kindergarten and just threw on a gown on the way to the red carpet. makeup? a necklace? better hair? something. anything.

  • My only argument is the hemline.  I’d love to see this on her in a cocktail length, otherwise she looks amazing.

  • ChelseaNH

The dress needs to be hemmed a few inches

  • She looks gorgeous! I love the dress, and though I’m not crazy about the shoes, they don’t bother me. If she’d had a stronger lip, and maybe a pair of earrings, this would have been a WERQ for me.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks near-perfect. The dress is a hair too long on her, but not enough to make her look bad. Love the hair and like the shoe choice, though I wish they weren’t so pointy and were more gunmetal than silver. This woman was born to wear Dior (how I wish I could say the same).

  • Trisha26

    I like the dress.

  • jw_ny

Pretty.  I do like the dress…wish it were a few inches shorter.  Hate her nail polish.

  • bitterk

  • she needs some earrings…

  • margaret meyers

It’s perfectly fitted, with no sign of muffin top.  Could a waist and bodice be any snugger with no sign of pulling?
The bell shaped skirt and tea dance length are so feminine.
She needed something sparkly up top:  diamond hairclips pulling her hair back, or great earrings, or even just a little velvet choker.  I love the encrusted scrunchy the model has around her neck.

  • forward_slash_PRS

The hair reads a little Nurse Ratched to me, but love the dress . . . [pre-Disqus I was /PRS]

  • lucasuk82

I love how interesting and flattering the polka-stripes are on her, although I hate where it stops.  The subtle retro hair is fantastic.  I think she went with the understated makeup to avoid a complete throw-back look, but maybe a bit more non-winged eyeliner would have kicked it up.

  • guest2visits

This all just looks very beautiful, very chic. I love the shoes.

  • annrr

I want those shoes in silver and in the blue on the model. And I LOVE the dress

  • annrr

    Earrings is what’s missing IMO

  • It feels a little long on her and she looks like she has catwoman ears…she’s pulling off the dress though

  • I will never like dresses that length. And I wish she’d done something different with her hair.

  • Definitely needs earrings!

  • lalahartma

    It’s too long.

  • ccm800

I didnt even notice the shoes until  you guys said they were focus pulling and I had to go back to look – so clearly I disagree with that statement. That big old exposed neck is screaming for jewels though. She is a gorgeous creature and that dress is hers.
