Kylie Minogue in Stella McCartney

Posted on October 23, 2012

We always have this overwhelming urge to subject every Stella McCartney red carpet look we see to an “IN or OUT” vote. We just know it’s going to get the Bitter Kittens all riled up and fired up. And we almost did it with this one, too. But reason won out. There’s no point in even asking.

Kylie Minogue attends the The Q Awards 2012 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in a Stella McCartney dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

Because come on.

Even we can’t work up a credible defense of this one. Sure, it fits her fine, but her boobs look like they’re strangers to each other; strangers going in opposite directions. Or former lovers, who now have nothing left to say to each other.

Actually, they kind of look like oven mitts.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Wow, her stylist must really hate her.

    • Scoobydrew

Now every time I take something out of the oven I will want to scream “STELLLLLA!!!”

TLO once again makes the day a little better!

    • StellaZafella

Yin and yang oven mitt boobs…another winner for McCartney.

Makes me embarrassed my name is Stella. Kylie is so cute…she ALMOST makes this work. Almost

      • Aaminah Khan

That’s exactly what I was thinking – Kylie is adorbs, and she’s aaaaaalmost pulling it off, but even she can’t manage it.

    • Sobaika

      This is just wrong.

    • Bert Keeter

OKAY…I’m stumped? What season was Stella on PR? YUCK!

      • Margaret Carlson Nikoleit

Bert, we luv ya. She certainly wasn’t on YOUR season!

    • Little_Olive

Stella, stop making these check thing happen. It won’t.

I gotta say, though, Kylie brings this as close to workability as I believe possible in this mental episode of a dress. She looks kinda fierce.

      • kschwarting

        It’s so not fetch.

    • Kayceed

I like to think that, as a child, Stella watched debauched celebrity parties from the shadows, and, as the keeper of sordid secrets, is now blackmailing the entirety of celebritydom to wear her terrible frocks.

      • Cassie

That would explain a great deal.

    • Lori

Just look at all that illusion net. How was that not a clue that this dress should be set on fire, not worn in public? Good lord.

    • Jessi03

I shudder.  And cringe.  Why is this woman still allowed to design?  Why on earth do people still buy her clothes?  No, Kylie, no!  You’re better than the Stella!

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Funny!  Maybe this dress exists so you could write this very post!

Despite everything, SHE’s kinda making it work.

    • tignor

This is all Yoko Ono’s fault

    • DinahR

I’ve been open minded about Stella up til now but this dress might change that.  Yeegods.  Kylie girl, what were you thinking??

    • Ros Clarke

This is what PR designers think is avant garde. Sonjia, I’m looking at you, girl.

      • dress_up_doll

I totally thought of Sonjia when I saw the illusion netting and the boob treatment. This dress is just wrong on so many, many levels. And the shoes…I can’t even.

      • EditKitten

TOTALLY thought that. Didn’t see your post so I posted below … but yes.

      • ballerinawithagun

I didn’t read through before posting my own, I so agree!

      • random_poster

This was totally my first reaction. Sonjia was aufed for it, too!

      • SapphoPoet

      • YoungSally

Agreed — that was all I could think of.

    • kaycem

      looks like sonjia designed it.

    • MilaXX

I’m as done with illusion netting as I am sheer dress & skirts. Kylie is working this as well as anyone could, but this dress is just a bad idea. Sad to say I could see this in Dmitry”s Fashion week collection.

    • Jackie Lorden

A checkered boob bib.  What every girl wants.

    • Alyssa T. Robot

at least it looks better on her than when anne hathaway wore a similar dress from the same collection:

    • EditKitten

So … Stella is making a career out of something that got Sonjia kicked off “Project Runway.” Noted.

    • MoHub

    • curiouserandcuriousest

Ugh, it’s a craft project made out of tablecloths. Kylie deserves kudos for looking as good as she does in this!

    • kschwarting

OK, it makes Kylie’s finely toned tuchus look weird in the fourth photo.  Now I can’t unsee it.  Bad dress!

      • kimmeister

I think her booty is looking pretty tight and spry, actually.

        • RebeccaKW

I think it’s an illusion caused by the seam over the booty. The checks aren’t meeting up exact and there is a small expanse of white.  Makes it look like her booty is spreading.

          • kimmeister

In the 5th photo, yes.  I was referring to the 4th photo.

        • ecallaw1977

I agree, her ass looks fantastic in the 4th photo.

      • mountainFashionista

There’s a model of Spanx that’ll do this to your booty (if you want it to).

    • Gaby

Oh Kylie, this is hella no. Plus, we already debated the merits of mismatched checks when Keira Knightley wore a dress from this collection forever ago, no?
Also, silly putty shoes with a black and white dress is just lame and boring. The only interest here is in the ugliness creating that titscrepancy.

    • yulaffin

What’s with the seam on the back?

    • Le_Sigh

ICK.  Even our Kylie can’t make this fun.  That is NOT GOOD.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Only Stella could make Kylie’s ass look big. Good lord.

    • Judih1

Oven mitts indeed. Plus even if this dress was remotely attractive, why is she wearing a summer dress in October?

    • BettyManyFeet

Joe Zee please ride to Stella’s rescue!

      • Christina Diaz

joe zee is a genius, but i think even he couldn’t make Stella design anything aesthetically pleasing.

    • melanie0866

      It hurts my eyes.

    • In_Stitches

I think a lot of the ‘boobs as strangers’ situation is in the netting, not the dual gingham.  There’s the germ of a great idea here.  Even worse than the netting is the fit through the lower back and butt.  From the side that butt is, well, BAM, but from the back, oooof, it’s a, what did they call it in 30 Rock?, a bread back situation?

    • jonnyf8

If Kylie can’t make it WERQ no one can.  I’m sure that someone forced into wearing this and she probably thought it was the patriotic thing to do  — or something.

    • NurseEllen

There isn’t a single commendable thing about that dress.  And that’s the sad fact.

    • MajorBedhead

It looks like she went on a picnic, got taken up by a tornado and placed down on the red carpet with only two tablecloths, strategically placed.  It’s hideous. The mermaid hair, the fugly-ass dress and the putty coloured pumps. Head-to-toe hideous.

Stella McCartney just needs to stop making clothing.

    • gillian holroyd

My love for gingham requires me to approve of this look.

But that back seam, oy vey.

      • kimmeister

I love gingham too, but it just doesn’t work in overtly sexy looks.  It’s like making a thong bikini out of plaid flannel.

        • mountainFashionista

In the mountain town that I live in, someone mocked up a Carhartt bikini a few years ago for fun…

    • SapphoPoet

I really dislike gingham. No matter how it is used, it always looks like a tablecloth to me.

    • Marie Drucker

Look what Stella did here: We don’t even care about the silly putty pumps!

    • Anathema_Device

Her left boob looks like it is in a makeshift sling made from a kitchen towel.

      • MoHub

I see it as running out of the smaller print one boob short and grabbing the nearest available fabric—the larger check—to cover the left side.

    • Tess Danesi

I love Kylie Minogue, the little pixie. I hate Stella McCartney, maker of clothes that, as one BK said, can manage to make tiny Kylie looks like she has a big ass and runaway boobs. Illusion netting, outside of ice skating costumes, must die.

    • Scarlet39

As Kors would say, this looks really “Becky Home Ec-ky”    I really thought the novelty of wearing something designed by a daughter of a Beatle would have worn off by now.  I mean, do people really like her stuff?  Really?

    • Joyce VG

This dress is so ugly and stupid.  Kylie is a cutie though.

    • Christin Pardy-Nosenchuk

Did Stella ever have a fantastic line?  I have never seen anything she has done that I love or, even like. I just wonder.

    • Zippypie

Why do people buy this shit?

      • MoHub

Because it’s as close as they’ll get to touching Sir Paul.

    • ojosazules

      Get away from Kylie!

    • Snailstsichr

Even the guy standing by the red carpet feels sorry for her.

    • Judy_S

While I hate the illusion netting and the oven-mitts illusion, she transcends it all. I think she looks cute.

      • kingderella

thank you! i already thought id be alone on this. i love this look! she looks super fab. the only thing im kinda taking issue with is all the illusion netting, but even there, id say the nude shoes call back to it and make it work.

work it, kylie & stella, work it!

    • Isabel

2 Tablecloth materials. How much is the dress? Hiddy.

    • Cathy S

She has a boob bib. Who thought that was a good idea?

    • VicksieDo

If this could be done without the hideous illusion stuff, it would be pretty edgy.  As is, it’s just awful.  Nude shoes? That’s on Kylie! ICK.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Stella, please, just put down the crack pipe and face it.  YOU’RE A TERRIBLE DESIGNER!!!

    • MinAgain

I find this dress a little bit interesting, if not exactly flattering, which is the best I’m ever going to be able to do for SM’s work.

    • Allison Woods

Lady has a great butt though!

Stella should really consider a career change.

    • sweet_potato

    • decormaven

Now you have me warbling “torn between two lovers, acting like a fool…” And that’s never a good thing! Kylie deserves way better than this look.

    • Janet B

At first, I couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing.

    • Athenrein

This dress is stupid. I tried to think of other adjectives, but stupid is the best one. “The side of my dress tore off so I tied some cloth around my neck and under my arm.” Stupid. And that’s IF the illusion netting actually did its job.

    • Adrianna Grężak

      I can’t believe a woman designed this

    • judybrowni

      Titscrepancy oven mitts!

    • PastryGoddess

      Good God,

Someone please set this clothing line on fire.  Didn’t Sonjia do this same technique and get savaged for it.

    • littlemac8

    • AtticWife

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

The overuse of illusion netting must end. This is ridiculous. If you need that much netting to hold the two competing pieces of your dress together, then it was not designed properly. It’s not a skating outfit. How much does Stella think she can get away with?

    • Rhonda Shore

Her left boob looks like its in a sling.

    • MandyJane

It looks worse than Sonjia’s avant garde dress! wtf? (not meant to get a PR convo going, but srsly that looks like something made in less than 24hrs)

    • l_c_ann

Holy shit.  I was kind of surprised that I found something to like about this (the smaller scale bias tape that finished the neck and armhole), and then I scrolled down and saw the view from the back and …..just, no, a thousand times no.

    • LLuL

Drugstore challenge! Run straight for the L’eggs and tablecloths. You have 30 minutes.

    • librarygrrl64

I hate it, but credit where credit is due: that illusion netting actually earned its name this time. I couldn’t see it until the closeup.

    • lehen

i like the theory behind this dress but the illusion netting makes me want to cry.

    • Delmekia Flannigan

It reminds me of the dress Sonja produce for the avant grade challenge on PR and got sent home for.

    • sashaychante

I wish this particular design from Stella McCartney (of which there are many versions) would just DIE already.

    • glennethph

    • Aj/Melia

It isn’t too bad, nothing that I would wear.  The illusion netting and hair make her look like a life size Barbie doll.  I wonder if the netting had been in black if it would have looked better?

    • ThaliaMenninger

      Fug, fug, fug, fug, FUG.

    • Shawn EH

She’s a pop star. I can see L’il Kim in this.

    • DaveUWSNYC

      Bad bust-up. Bosom enemies.

    • IrmaLaDuce

ha! you didn’t even get to the shoes, so consumed you were by the wonky tits. At least she her silly putty heels aren’t those ubiquitous, ridiculous Minnie Mouse clodstompers.

      • Pennymac

        Snorted at “clodstompers”!

    • Bree The Vole

The dress is horrible, but Kylie and her bum is as great as ever. <3

    • tereliz

      This dress is just… EW.

    • Knightley

The illusion netting seams that are visible on her shoulder make her look like a cheap plastic generic Barbie-doll.  Her dress makes my eyes cross.

    • EEKstl

Looking at this debacle, was Sonjia’s green dress really THAT BAD?? (I know the answer is yes, just sayin…)

      • MoHub

But Sonjia had only 2 days; Stella probably had a whole season and a workshop crew.

    • Ann

It is like the more casual version of Sonjie’s tablecloth/napkin green dress on PR. This one is picnic-themed instead of banquet.

    • teensmom99

& this would be a great look for oven mitts!

    • Jangle57

Every time I see a Stella McCartney dress, I think of the Emperor’s New Clothes – only instead of non-existent, they’re hideous but all the celebrities see is the McCarney name and not the actual article of clothing.

    • quiltrx

This would be a cute dress, if it WERE a dress.  You know, if the fabric connected together and the bodice wasn’t mostly pantyhose.

      • MoHub

It would also help if the larger check were deployed elsewhere—say, as a panel in the right side of the skirt.

        • quiltrx

I totally agree!  The larger check is SO much larger, it does need to be somewhere else to balance things out.  GOod call.

    • UsedtobeEP

I just don’t get why she is worn so often. Everything I see of Stella’s just looks off.

    • Trevor Scott

Didn’t Nichole Kidman wear this dress to some event that was featured here? I believe it was an out then too. Obviously…

    • Gus Casals

I love her, I really do. And I’m not Stella biased. But that illusion netting is the worst.thing.ever.

    • sleah_in_norcal

when we look back on the bad fashion trends of 2012, one will be illusion netting.

    • angryparsnip

Why is she still designing and why do stylists keep picking her dresses ?

      cheers,  parsnip

    • piecesofconfetti

I’m usually one of the lone kittens who defends a Stella McCartney dress, but I can’t even with this one. Fail.

    • LuxuryLime

      Oh, Kylie. Quelle tragedie.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Would Stella’s dad please take away her line of credit or whatever she is using to fund the creation of these abominations!

    • Winterhart

At least the illusion netting matches her skin tone, which is more than we can say for most illusion netting getups.  Honestly the 80’s flipped over hair bothers me more than the dress does.

    • Patricia Gillett

What designer does that to a woman’s boobs??!! It’s just mean!

    • maggiemaybe

A terrible, TERRIBLE dress. I honestly don’t understand the whole Stella McCartney thing.

    • Lisa Kramp

I don’t care if she’s Sir Paul’s daughter; she SUCKS as a designer!!!

    • Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

Makes me want to have a picnic.

    • L.

Didn’t Sonjia do this to ill effect?

      • Pennymac

Yes. And this monstrosity is to ill effect as well…

    • marlie

You know what… I don’t actually hate this one. It’s interesting. If you had made it an IN/OUT, I might have voted it IN.

    • Judy_J

Normally I’m a fan of the black and white check, but not on this dress.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Honey, if Kylie can’t make it work it simply can’t be done.  Oven mitts indeed.  Hee.

    • crash1212

Nice ass Kylie! In other news…even though I loathe pretty much anything that Stella “designs”, I like these two prints together. Combined in a less cracky way and eliminating the illusion netting (I mean REALLY…illusion netting? GAH!) altogether – she might’ve had something. Of course, if she was wise enough to do those things, she wouldn’t be Stella McCartney.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Any dress that can take Kylie Minogue’s fabulous bod and make it look deformed is of the devil.

    • Chuck Barthelme

      Plus, putty colored shoes. Ick.

    • Trisha26

The dress (and the oven mitts) go along with Sonjia’s ill-fated illusion netting linen napkins dress on PR.

    • jw_ny

It’s like she hit the trifecta of bad decisions all in one look…mermaid hair, hideous dress with oven mitt boobs, obvious nude illusion netting, silly putty shoes…oh, wait…that’s 4 (at the least.)  It’s more like she hit the jackpot!  ;)

    • Katherine Pavlica

Where to begin??  Well at least calling me a bitter kitten is sincerely en pointe.  Honey, gingham will never be red carpet.  Look up Gingham’s urban sister Houndstooth next time and maybe you’ll have a shot at losing the WTF moniker.  Illusion mesh is best on a figure skater, not on a red carpet.  And if you’re going to do something cray cray with illusion mesh and two types of gingham, don’t go with a super boring shift.  It screams of first-semester bad-designer term-garment.  Rant over, back to the show.

    • luciaphile

Daisy Mae of L’il Abner in 2012.

    • neofashionista

Gross is all I can muster and I agree with the Oven Mits

    • Corazon Nunez

Ugh. Ya know, with a couple tweaks in the design, this could have turned out great.

    • DeGuz

The part on the right looks like an arm sling that fell too short and just caught her boob…

    • bitterk

    • unbornfawn

STELLA!!!!!!!!!!!    Please, find a new career and stop submitting the public to your questionable designs.

    • margaret meyers

Illusion in daylight?  There’s no illusion in daylight.

    • silaria

I actually sort of liked it until I saw the back.  Then it went straight to tacky-land.

    • rainwood1

Tit mitts!  Somebody had to go there.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

kylie, you should know better.  if it isn’t shiny, put it back.

    • Alloy Jane

That has got to be the worst deployment of illusion netting in quite some time.  And yes, Kylie almost makes this work, too bad she didn’t take it to someone who troubleshoots ridiculous dresses.

    • apt9000

Illusion net is ONLY acceptable in figure skating and dance costumes.

    • RzYoung

Seriously, when will this ridiculous flattery and loyalty to Stella end? She may be their bffs but she’s making them look terrible, truly terrible. And you don’t do that to Kylie!

    • Fatima Siddique

I don’t know about gingham on the red carpet. No red carpet look should have me thinking of hot dogs and potato salad.

    • guest2visits

I liked the gingham, and the front almost works… but the back was the reason this dress should never have left the house.

    • The Dose of Reality

…and that entire back of illusion netting….oh, my.

    • KathKo

Just two words : Stella McCartney.
That’s all that’s need to be said.

    • Kathleen Foley

It looks like the “couture” dress Sonjia made

    • Mary Stone

      Project Runway avant garde fail

    • Vera

      The horror…the horror.

    • ccm800

she’s got a great ass though! cant deny that. I hate this dress though but I cannot ever make mention of how Miss K’s boobies look because of the breast cancer stuff – I have no idea what shape all that left her in – so…yeah.
