Katy Perry in Gucci

Posted on October 15, 2012

You guys, Katy looks elegant.

We know! Right? Crazy! And she even managed elegance while still shoving her boobs in everyone’s face!

Katy Perry attends the Comedy Central’s Night Of Too Many Stars: America Comes Together For Autism Programs event in New York City in a Gucci gown.

Gucci Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Jacquelyn Jablonski

We’re not too crazy about the hair, which looks a little flat to us, but that is one gorgeous dress and there’s something about the whole look that calls to mind some silver screen siren from the forties. Except for the plunging neckline, of course. But even then, it still manages to look classy. We’re thinking she’s in exactly the right bra for her girls, supporting them without turning them into babyheads. It’s one of those very rare instances where a gown looks better on the red carpet than it did on the original model wearing it.

But is it us, or does that belt placement look kind of awkward against the seaming?

  • I was thinking the same thing about the belt. I wish it lined up with the seaming better.

    •  That would have required major bodice alterations.  Since she has a lot more going on up front, that a model, its pulling upwards.  Honestly, the amount its climbing, it would’ve required a new bodice to be cut.

      •  Plus, even if it did line up originally, I would imagine the slightest movement would make it slide around.

      • kschwarting

I noticed the belt riding up too…thanks for explaining why that is the case!

      • j_anson

I also think, for all that the neckline is plunging, she’s clearly had it brought up from how it’s cut on the model, and that’s throwing things off.

  • Hey, at very least she had the decolletage altered so its not all the way to her waist.  I kinda like the hair. the only thing bugging me a little is her makeup is reading to me just a tiny bit ghostly.   Otherwise, this may be a personal best for Katy

    • amian3

The make up is really not working. A lighter hand with the eye stuff would have been a big improvement.

  • MissAnnieRN

Yeah, the belt placement does look odd.  Agree – Hair is too flat at the roots, but the style is otherwise suited to the gown.

Thank god she didn’t wear that Silence of the Lambs butterfly choker.  Yeesh.  Having Clarice flashbacks with that thing at her throat.

    • Sobaika

Given the amount of torture she’s done to her hair, I’m just glad she has some left.

  • schadenfreudelicious

she looks good, but that flat hair with a center part is not your forehead’s friend Katy….

  • lovelyivy

I wish we could get the heads up on who made her bra. It is doing amazing things for the girls!

    • VeryClaire

It looks like your basic push-up bra, no?

      • lovelyivy

I have a hard time finding the right bras, probably because I’m in special sizes territory- small band, large cup, which I’d bet Katy Perry deals with too- and it makes it hard to find the right fit, as not all manufacturers provide enough support in the right places.

Plus there’s the challenge of showing any cleavage at all without going straight to hoochieville. She has it nailed here.

      • Sobaika

When you’ve got sizable breasts, most basic bras don’t cut it. I’m still on the quest for a decent bra that offers support and doesn’t give uniboob, bonus points if it doesn’t look like something belonging to an elderly lady.

        • lovelyivy

Look up Fantasie- it’s a British brand. They’re pricey but I buy almost all of my bras from them now- the silhouette is almost always perfect.

          • Fantasie is the reason that my cleavage doesn’t look its age to the average beholder. Wonderful bras and worth every penny. Panache also makes fabulous bras in small band and large cup sizes that are money well spent.

        • It’s damn near impossible to find that perfect bra, especially one so low cut that she can wear that dress with it. I wish she would divulge whatever that magical bra is cause I’d be getting a dozen of them.

        • Or Chantelle… once again pricey territory. Freya is an offshoot of Fantasie as well and they make great stuff as well.  Both of the latter make swimsuits that are awesome (investments). I would suggest getting fitted at Nordstrom by a seasoned fitter (sometimes the newbies have no idea that different brands and different makers fit so differently).  Once you find a range that fit really well, you can even find some at NordstromRack- I’ve been very lucky there.

  • I think she looks stunning! Great job, Katy!

  • mellorcr

The belt placement is awkward.  It’s because her ample bosom has pulled the waist of the gown up more in the front than the model’s non-bosom does.  That’s making the angle of the gown’s waistline off-kilter from the belt.

  • 2 words ABSOLUTELY LOVELY but is it me or is her makeup just too heavy all the time?  i guess its her “thing” but she’s an absolutely beautiful girl with a rockin body i would LOVE to see her JUST ONCE (im lying, i would like to see it more than once) have her makeup applied with a lighter hand.

    • MoHub

The makeup reads like what one would wear to be seen in the back row of a theater; it does not do well close up and on camera.

  • It’s gorgeous! It looks like the dress flows right over her body. I also love her nails (wish I could see them better). I’m a nail technician and my clients love the “accent nail”.

    • MilaXX

I don’t think she’s doing the accent nail. It looks like each nail is a different color. I’ve seen a few jewels tone looks for Fall. Ordinarily I like the look, but with this dress I don’t.

  • StellaZafella

“Psssst, looks like KP’s been hanging out in Dita Von Tease’s closet…Dita said, ‘Oh just take the long gown and go, kid!'”

    •  Dita von Teese was my first thought too! And I thought that would actually be a good direction for her since I think at some point she has to leave the really girly/crazy stuff behind, no?

      • formerlyAnon

Yes. I think (hope) that this is a glimpse of the Perry to come. She’s not ready to abandon the kiddie glitter kitsch, but I think (hope) she’ll be moving in that direction.

  • Judy_S

I almost always prefer the RC version to the runway, if only because women on the RC are more likely to have some personality beyond whatever the stylist created.  She looks lovely here. I kind of like that hair with this dress. It emphasizes the perfect symmetry of her face.

  • SapphoPoet

    An unusual and elegant look.

    The belt does look odd.

  • Dress is great, but I’m sick of her heavy makeup. Kills the look, and I’m sure she would look fine with less of it.

  • rafraf25

Great dress! I want one 😀
Amusing that she is somewhat styled like Florence Welch
It’s tacky how obvious it is where her skin tone ends and her foundation begins

    • hyperionic

Where does it end? I can’t see it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Oh look, she’s now cosplaying as Florence Welch.

    • ballerinawithagun

It would look great on Florence!

      • MilaXX

I think this style of dress looks horrible on Florence, despite the fact that she loves it.

  • l_c_ann

That she didn’t go for the cleave to belt is a real step in her right direction.
But, the belt is riding up because her version is cut for a woman with no boobs, and the same length of fabric had to go over hers, thus scootching the waist line up two to three inches. Because of that, no belt would have been a better choice.

  • alyce1213

This may be the best Katy’s ever looked.  She looks like a beautifully dressed adult.
    I think it’s a WERQ for her.

  • Anathema_Device

Agree on the belt placement. On the model, it is right over the seam. In real life, it is very hard to get a belt to stay put when you’re wearing over a dress or blouse, especially with that kind of seaming.

She does look great, despite the plastered-down hair. She looks so feminine without going the blow-up doll route. So refreshing.

  • EverybodysStarling

She looks so normal (for her). Kinda like that. Except the hair.

  • B_C_J

Beautiful dress but I would discard the belt to eliminate the seam/belt issue.  The hair is definitely in need of a fix. However, the overall look is lovely.

  • The sleeves are very elegant.

  • VeryClaire

I think it’s cute how you guys think her bra is not pushing up her boobs.

  • ballerinawithagun

    Agree on all points.

  • MilaXX

She looks softer and prettier than she has in a long time. You’re right about the belt placement though. I don’t know the sewing terms but it looks like the seam on the dress kinda of curves up and so the belt looks off because it goes straight across. I must sad I don’t like her nail art in this case. I don’t mind crazy nails, but this look is distracting.

  • That dress looks great on her, but imagine what it could do with Florence Welch…

  • tereliz

I would have skipped the belt if I were endowed like Katy. I think the hair could be better, but honestly, it is a vast improvement over her awful Kool-Aid dye-jobs and wigs. This is a beautiful dress and she looks about as classy as possible while showing that much boob.

  • It sure does look better on her. She’s a gorgeous woman.

  • Pinup Ghoul

She looks absolutely beautiful! She also looks like Rachel Weisz, a little bit.

  • kolokOlchik

    What a gorgeous dress!

  • jmorino08

I was thinking the same thing about red carpet vs runway. I think that dress needs someone with a few curves to fill it out. It looks shapeless on the model, but fits Katy beautifully.

  • She would have knocked it out even more if she’d toned down her makeup and had her nails done in one color…maybe dark red. Her makeup cheapens the look some.

  • God, I HATE that wide open sternum look. Even on here. It just looks ugly.

  • Lily-Rygh

I have to admit that I think Katy Perry is almost weirdly beautiful.  That said, the looks like a train wreck most of the time, especially with the cotton candy hair.  Here, she looks stunning!  I agree that the dress looks better on her than on the model, and honestly, if my boobs looked like hers, I would show them off all the time, too!  I can’t really fault anything here save some minor imperfections.

  • Agree…hair is sooo dark…no contrast. I love dress…only comment is I would like the sleeves to be a TOUCH fuller at the cuff.

  • Rand Ortega

    But it’s a demure shoving.

  • The neckline is screaming for a necklace!

  • librarygrrl64

A chignon would have upped this look by 100%.

  • crash1212

Boy. I really hate this dress. I think it’s particularly dowdy – even with the plunging neckline. And I’m beginning to twitch uncontrollably with all the deployment of sheer sleeves lately – even I didn’t realize how much I abhor them. It’s almost pathological! With the dark hair, painfully parted in the middle, and the pale skin – I’m thinking early Halloween costume as Morticia.

    • guest2visits

sorry; just posted similar observation about Morticia before seeing yours!

  • yes. better than the model!

  • mmc2315

Very elegant dress.  Needs a necklace.  Don’t like the hair.  The slimmer looking skirt on Katy looks better than the fuller pooling skirt on the model.

  • mhleta

It’s a gorgeous dress. I wish someone else were wearing it. All I can think of is Kristen Wigg’s washed up actress character going, “Don’t make me sing!! Please, don’t make me singgg!!”

  • Its probably just me, because I DON’T wear makeup, but it always looks like she’s wearing a TON.

  • Call me Bee

With that kind of set-in waist treatment, no belt is needed, really.  The belt is odd–both on the runway and on KP.  Nonetheless, the dress is fabulous, and… (it kills me to say this because KP is on the tippy-top of my Irrational Celeb Hate List…)  Katy looks really good in it.

  • Judy_J

Yes, the belt is awkward.  I would have left it off.  Be that as it may, she does look elegant and classy, in a cleaveage-baring sort of way.

  • formerlyAnon

You know, I am tired, weary and borderline sick of lovely dresses that show enough bosom (or sternum, on the models) to require tape and/or anti-gravity to keep the wearer decent. I just don’t see the point. It’s so widespread that the impact is lessened  to where it’s not as sexy as it once was, it only occasionally creates glamour, it’s just anatomical. (Well, it doesn’t strike *me* as terribly sexy. I’m sure millions disagree.)

I think this means I am old. Definitely cranky. Ignore my  maunderings. Lets carry on as if I hadn’t.

Agree on the hair, and I’m not sure the eye makeup is most flattering I’ve seen her sport but this look is lovely, considering.

  • guest2visits

I think this may be one of those dresses that look better in person than pictured;  it just looks too dark and Morticia-like, with the
hair and eye make-up, – I just don’t like it as much as others.

  • rab01

I just want to give her props for raising the neckline.  Imagine her wearing the model’s version where it plunges down to her belt.

  • sweetlilvoice

Looking good Katy! I also like the butterfly choker on the original model…

  • She looks like she trying to recreate a Katy Jurado look with the dress, make-up and hair.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  • shawnhunter

I’m a fan of her red carpet style. I can’t help it. She seems like one of the few people who not only consistently looks good (with a few slip ups here and there), but she also wears interesting things and seems like she has a lot of fun with it.

  • She looks fabulous.

  • quiltrx

She should have ditched the belt…the fact that she actually HAS boobs  hiked that seam up.  And it might look intended if not for the belt.

That is one great dress.  Definitely looks like a film noir babe (with that hair, I’m going with Yvonne DeCarlo)…I hope she had on mules with marabou feathers underneath!

  • Trisha26

Not liking this look at all. The belt works on the model because the neckline plunges to the waist – we can be thankful for small favors there! And the babyheads are just horizontal instead of vertical – so over these necklines.

  • I love her with black hair. I wish she wouldn’t go sporting every colour of the rainbow when jet black suits her so beautifully.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

it almost looks to me like katy’s left the whole vintage hollywood thing and wandered into 70’s disco-fabulous realness.

  • This you still call ‘shoving your boobs in everybody’s face’? Well then I must be shoving my boobs in everybody’s face every day of my life. Seriously you know how hard it is with bigger boobs? You’d have to wear a turtleneck to not ‘shove them in face’. Seriously.

    •  She’s wearing a pushup bra with a plunging neckline, so yeah.

  • While the girls are the reason for the rising waist seam, the sternum thing doesnt look as good. is that irony?

  • NCDFan

This is the gown Katy wore when she performed with a young autistic girl. The video is very moving. Here’s the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX-xToQI34I&feature=player_embedded
