Katy Perry for Ghd

Posted on October 04, 2012

Some day, apparently far in the future, stylists will figure out what to do with Katy Perry for photo shoots without falling back on “retro Hollywood glam.”

Katy Perry’s latest campaign for the hair-styling brand Ghd shot by Ellen von Unwerth in Los Angeles.

But we have no problem with these shots; not really. She looks amazing and it can’t be denied that retro-glam really suits her.

Love the shot with the side pony. Can’t see the full dress, but it looks like it’s gorgeous.

      • ecallaw1977

It is a beautiful shot, but she’s unrecognizable in it.

        • 3Beaz

I agree, they blurred all her facial features away,  I keep staring at it hoping to see Katy Perry in there somewhere but it just looks nothing like her.

          • charlotte

Looks a bit like Ellen Page…

          • OneBonBonIsPoison

Yeah, that shot is so blurred and overexposed it’s giving her Voldemort nostrils. The rest of it is striking but I can’t unsee the nose now.

          • iheartbuffy

That’s exaggeration. It looks plenty like her, but it cannot be denied that the photographer abused contrast on these images

            • 3Beaz

Not exaggerating, that’s what it looks like to me…   Put this photo in front of me with no context and I wouldn’t guess Katy Perry given 10 tries.

        • MrsJoe

It’s not even that she’s unrecognizable, so much as the pictures look to me like there were at least 3 different models.  It’s strange – what makes it look like this?  Photoshop? the makeup?  Katy’s face is totally different from every angle?  what is it?

If that was her real hair and not a wig/extensions, I would say she was having a “Good Hair Day.”  Otherwise, love the shot with the chandelier.  Drama.

      • sanja_ramic

Yeah I feel like the whole wig thing kind of undermines the message of the product, unless ghd is selling wigs/extensions now.

    • http://twitter.com/maggie162 Maggie

She looks good, but I wish they were all overexposed.  I’d like to get some of the texture and detail in those light-colored dresses.

      • kittenwithaquip

But if they weren’t overexposed, you’d see the texture and detail in her skin. This way nobody has to bust their ass in Photoshop to erase all evidence that she’s human.

    • imspinningaround

These wigs are killing me, and not in a good way.  But the photo with the unzipped sequin gown is quite fab.

    • Kristy Evans

At least they let her look like herself rather than another female artist. The third shot down is stunning.

      • Ceur

Well, the third shot is also the one where she looks the least like Katy Perry.

      • NC_Meg

That’s also my favorite. Loooove the side swept bangs and side pony. It’s prob a wig but I don’t care.

    • http://twitter.com/Nanskatoon Nancy Skaggs

In the megaphone shot, she looks like the young Diane Lane in 1984’s “Streets of Fire.”

      • Lily-Rygh

When I saw that shot, I immediately thought of Lisa Maria Presley…

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The only issue I have with these shots is that in every one of them her hair looks like a wig.  And for a hair products company, Not A Good Thing.

      • mjude

i love the photos.  your comment about her hair looking like a wig, made me think is it ever her real hair?

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          The world will never know.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Can you get wigs that look like bad regrowth?

      • pop_top

It reminds me of those makeover websites where they paste your face underneath a bunch of hairstyles.

    • chris

      • call_me_schmeg

        for realz!

    • LesYeuxHiboux

There is no room for a woman with breasts in the modern world! Didn’t you get the memo?

Seriously, though, she looks lovely. I’m really responding to some of the more low-key shots, like the one with the chess set and the ponytailed look. This is trodden ground for her, but done just differently enough that I am still interested.

      • j_anson

I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a woman playing chess in a fashion shoot. It’s a weird little achievement, but go photographer!

        • tereliz

The only one coming to mind is the Farrah Fawcett (or maybe it’s all the Angels) in front of a chessboard during the height of Bobby Fischer madness, before I was born. That one and the one with the megaphone might be my favorites, if they looked more like Katy.

    • PeaceBang

The megaphone shot is killing me, and the first shot is making me feel like I’d like to see her play Gypsy Rose Lee.

      • AwwwTrouble

Funny, that first shot I was thinking Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara.  Something about the angle of her face.

    • StellaZafella

The first shot makes me think of Warhol’s diva Holly Woodlawn ascending the stairs…classic drag of the highest order.

This is meant as high praise. I just think of KP, and most of the current pop and hip hop divas as mainstream female drag queens…really expensive drag queens.

      RuPaul, there you go gurl!

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/21151157@N00/ rawrgrowlrawr

In my dreams, I am a badass sword fighter married to Benedict Cumberbatch. Oh, and I look like Katy Perry. Girl is STUNNING.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KBNJ6GJTXYEE6BON3WGK6KEGT4 Elizabeth

Must respectfully disagree, TLo. These shots aren’t doing it for me. They are lovely, but they don’t even look like Katy. Could be any pretty model. I don’t think retro glam is in her wheelhouse (leave that for Dita). She’s all bubblegum, sno cones and cotton candy. She just isn’t sophisticated enough to pull this styling off. But they are very pretty photos. I kinda want to live in that dressing room scene in the first shot.

    • Anathema_Device

These are some of the first pics of her that didn’t bug the shit out of me. I especially like shots 2,3 & 4.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Has she always looked like Jennifer Connolly or just this shoot?

    • Pants_are_a_must

Why does she look in most of these like she’s having an allergic reaction to her false eyelashes?

Also gurl, that wig is AWFUL.

    • everest19

So overexposed… it looks like someone cranked the “brightness” contrast to 250%.

      • PinkLemon

         yeah, not a fan.

    • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

      I wish I had a hair and makeup team. : (
      She looks great!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/Y3OY6COEVBS2STNCUNIRZ3COUE Claudia

Pictures 3, 4, and 5 don’t look like her.  They’re all very pretty, but its kind of generic.

    • SapphoPoet

She looks beautiful. I love the chandelier shot and the chess game.

    • neofashionista

until that day comes fellas I will enjoy her retro fabulousness just as she is
i must say she is very chameleonesk ( i doubt this is an actual word) in that however you disguise her she more or less pulls it off
and has almost as many alters as Ms Chloe… well maybe not that many…

    • MilaXX

      I really like the 2nd & 3rd shots.

    • stubbornthoughts

LOVE her hair in the 3rd pic down, but her face has no contour, it’s freaking me out.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

      God, she is beautiful.

    • cam_lo

it’s amazing how good she looks when her hair looks normal instead of like a smurf or an alien.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Most of these don’t even remotely look like her. The first one does, and it is stunning.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think she could pass for Zooey Deschanel in the 2nd photo.  And no, that’s not a compliment.

    • BeeBeauNYC

She’s stunningly beautiful and they really captured it well here. And at least the pics are black and white so we can’t tell if she has purple or blue hair in these photos.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Her makeup artist must have used all the black liquid eyeliner in New Jersey.

    • Judy_J

She’s got the perfect face for retro-glam.  I’m not a fan, but she does look gorgeous in these shots.

    • afabulous50

Nice shots but you can’t see the clothes.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

It’s an ad for hair products.

    • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

I love #3. I can’t get behind the big 80s hair on her on a couple of the others. Keep retro alive honey.

    • tereliz

I know the hair is important to the feature, but I wish she was coming across as more than just hair and eyes in these shots. The exposure is washing out every other facial feature and any interesting textures in the clothing. Not my favorite, though it can’t be denied that Katy is a beautiful woman. It’s just that she looks like any other beautiful woman.

    • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

That chandelier shot fairly screams Sarah Jessica Parker at me, face-wise.

    • Call me Bee

She’s a beautiful woman and seems to be a good model. She should continue with a modeling career and stop pretending that she can sing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Stone/100001328135240 Mary Stone

She’s got the perfect face for the rockabilly retro look, mid-20th century modern, and the curves don’t hurt that either.

Try to put her in 20’s drag and — nope.

    • kimmeister

She looks great with bangs!  Both the blunt and side swept kinds.

    • sk8tfan

I thought it was Marilyn Cottilard in that last photo. Not that it’s a bad thing, just that it didn’t seem like Katy, who is beautiful in her own right and does not need to mimic anyone else.

    • Claudia Fernandes

artificial. Besides the chess game photo, the mouth and jaw look always the same

    • Myra C

I especially love shots 3 and 5.  The hairstyle in shot 3 really suits her. She looks so beautiful in both.

    • guest2visits

I really like these for the atmosphere; especially the one with the chess board.

    • http://twitter.com/CantResistCody Courtney

      Oh those wigs…

    • Trisha26

The photos are pretty but she doesn’t look like Katy Perry. I thought the idea of having a spokesmodel/star is to capitalize on their brand – how do you do that if the star is unrecognizable?

      • holdmewhileimnaked

the first one looks like her. the one w/ the megaphone couldve been kristen stewart. one of these days theyre gonna have to really really broaden whats glam-acceptable cos after decades of giving us the same type theyve all really begun to look almost identical.

    • LLuL

Is that really how small her waist is? Katy Von Teese.

    • TieDye64

      pics 2-4 are killer.

    • RzYoung

I think the reason they fall back on distinctive retro looks is because without all the make-up and accentuation she’s barely recognisable

    • geans

Most of the time I would never know who the pictures were supposed to be of if I wasn’t told.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Why bother to do something else when the photos turn out this well?  I like everything about them.  Life could use as much of Old Hollywood Glam as it can get, nowadays.

She takes such pretty pics!  Love her look.  I especially like #3 with the bangs and side pony…she looks different, but still Katy.  A softer, less retro in your face Katy.

    • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth Mellone

At first glance I thought the headline read “Katy Perry for God.” That got a double-take! Anyway, these are trite, as you say, but pretty. I really enjoy the high contrast black and white. I know nothing about photography, so I can just enjoy the slight weirdness of the effect without freaking out about whether the photos are “blown-out” or not.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

oh, ellen von unwerth shot em. she’s been good since she was a model, she’s probably even a better photographer.

i wonder what she thinks of how the world has changed in the last thirty odd years. she’s got more than a few years on me, she’s seen more than i have. does it feel to anyone else like various times of the past folded in on themselves to create the present, w/ so much else in the interim being lost? thats how i feel.

    • bringbackbeatles

She looks fabulous! I know the styling has been done with her, but it just suits her so well. She’s always stunning, but these are just amazing.

    • KathKo

      she looks exceedingly pretty.
I love the chess’ shot, because of the broad smile that borders on a smirk like she’s teasing him with her brain instead of her rack.
It’s a nice set of shots for her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

      Wow, she looks great!
