Kat Graham in Chalayan

Posted on October 03, 2012

Kat has helpfully worn a dress that allows all the other ladies in the room to check their makeup without having to head off to the toilets.

Kat Graham attends the 2012 Environmental Media Awards in a Chalayan dress.

Chalayan Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Nastya Choo (WM)

We readily admit that we’re never really all that consistent with our red carpet assessments, which is why we try to shy away from making rules. It’s always going to come down to who’s wearing the dress, because things like size, shape, skin tone, hair and attitude (especially that last one) are all going to come into play. We don’t know why, but we kind of love this look, even though the “baked potato” jokes practically write themselves; even though her shoes look like dog noses in close up. Somehow, this just works for us. We can’t help it.

You are, as always, free to be much bigger bitches than we are but at least give us some credit for the “dog noses” crack.

MY EYES!!!! That is the most hideous dress ever!!!!

      • h2olovngrl

psh! I have seen way worse than that.

        • 3boysful

Yes, but don’t you think this would have been an automatic AUF had it appeared on the PR runway?  (So long as Anya didn’t design it, which we know she couldn’t have as it has sleeves.)  Can’t you just imagine the Duchess’ comments?

    • A B

Ugh, I think it looks like someone has sliced her open (and found her to be a robot?) and the shoes are hideous.

      • kimmeister

That sounds like the plot line of a sci-fi show that is a hybrid of V and Battlestar Galactica!

      • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth Mellone

That basically IS the plot of _Machine_ by Jennifer Pelland: one of the better books I’ve read this year, and I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten more (any) buzz.

Actually, now that I can think of this dress as an homage to that book, I really like it! But I’m not a fan of the dog-nose shoes with it.

      • Kristin McNamara

“Sliced her open and found her to be a robot” is the PERFECT description!!!

    • DylanCurtis

I don’t personally like the color against her tan skin. I like it better on the paler model.

    • ChiliP

I’m confused by what I’m looking at here.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

because it’s inside out.  the foil should be on the outside.  pass the butter and sour cream.  chives anyone?  bacon bits?

    • mjude

we all have a weak moment tlo.  but i don not like, i think its the shoes more than the dress

      • kimmeister

Such a random shoe choice, right?

        • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow aka Darth Mommy

Agreed, if the shoes were different it would be better.  For whatever reason, I like the dress on her. If it’d been in black instead of tan, I’d be happier.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Another beautiful woman employing a rotten stylist.  Oy.

      • iheartbuffy

         Probably a stifled VD stylist.

        • kimmeister

I just now realized that you meant Vampire Diaries and not Venereal Disease.

      • pop_top

Sometimes I think it’s just her; Kat Graham’s style is pretty…different, so to say. Like this is rather normal given what she usually wears.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DWOPIV3PYYMUKTSRCNGK7LUJWA Dianne Jones

Yuck. Perhaps it’s a solar panel that’s secretly charging the cell phone in her hem pocket? It is an Environmental event after all.

    • PinkLemon

      :enter baked potato joke here:

    • ojosazules

What does this look like when she sits down? I’m very curious.

      • kimmeister

No one will ever know, since all they’ll see is their own refection funhouse-style.

    • Sara__B

The dress is … interesting? … in the way it plays with shiny and matte, tight and loose. The way the shoes play with toe and dog nose is just plain ugly. But somehow the beautiful and confident Kat Graham is making it all look much better than it should.

    • StellaZafella

DOG NOSES…can’t un-see it now! makes me laugh and want to see a pair of ears attached at each ankle strap!

She’s cute as hell though and could probably make that work, too!

    • iheartbuffy

I…. I…. simply do. not. understand. My theory: the fashion on VD is so damn awful and stifling that Kat felt the need to go APESHIT with the off-the-charts unusual. Unfortunately she ventured into the realm of off-the-charts astronaut FUGLY with the dress

    • hughman

The dress is like looking at a comic book ad for “X-ray Specs”.

    • Trisha26

I don’t get it. And the shoes are pug ugly.

    • 3boysful

      Cute girl, FUG dress.

      Dog nose joke–priceless.

    • ChelseaNH

I like the idea of the dress, but I dislike the beige color and hate the shoes.  Yet somehow — I don’t really like this look, but I don’t find it repulsive.  So the sum really is greater than the whole of the parts.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

you’re right, that color is just putrid.  looks like the fabric is woven from old dirty pantyhose.  find it repulsive now?

    • formerlyAnon

It works for you because it is a FABULOUS look. Even though the colors of that dress are hideous and ought to offend.

She’s cute and it suits her somehow. Even though the brown color on the shoes ought to clash, in my unreliable opinion.

It’s actually something a little different than the usual run of the mill – most times when someone wears something a little different, three other celebs sport the same “something a little different” but I doubt that happened at this event.I only wish her hair wasn’t obscuring the shoulders completely.

    • MrsJulien

I like it. The shoes are hideous though.

      • Sobaika

This! I loooooove the dress, especially on her (obviously I’m in the minority) but I wouldn’t have gone near those shoes at all.

    • Clueless_Jock

Very striking dress but the shoes are so wrong.

    • http://twitter.com/flo_whytingale Florence Whytingale

I think she’s almost making it work. That is to say, I think she’s doing a much better job than anyone else could in that dress. However, the shoes are an abomination. They might work with some flare pants on a Fanning, but not here.

    • lrhg

She looks like the daughter of very conservative parents who snuck out of the house in the proverbial potato sack dress and is in the process of ripping it away to reveal the awesomeness underneath.

Her makeup (and face) are lovely.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Are pointy talon nails back in? I feel like I’m seeing them on lady stars with increasing frequency.

    • formerlyAnon

Okay, more specifics than to say I think it’s FABULOUS: The underdress allows us all to know that yes, she has the requisite shapely young body. The overdress imparts the flavor of a chic, simple, sheath – but the cutout keeps everyone from wailing about how she’s too young to wear such a matronly “ladies who lunch while planning the next symphony fundraising gala” dress.

And because the dress is a bit of a novelty, it overcomes the deadly silver & fawn color combination that I would usually associate with late-middle-aged and elderly women who frost their hair.

    • Judy_J

That dress has a weird “Clark Kent changing into Superman” vibe, if you get my drift.  And yes, the shoes do look like dog noses!

    • formerlyAnon

Also: Mayim Bialik ought to look into this dress (in other colors) before she gets much older. It’s modest & with an elegant, soft updo Ms. Bialik might be able to carry it off (she might want a matte underdress).

I think on anyone who’s into their 40’s its going to look “artistic aunt at bas/bat mitzvah.”

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

This is the same Kat Graham that gave us this http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2012/06/kat-graham-upholding-tradition.html beauty. It’s like, she wears THE most oddest things but yet she werqs it out the only way she can. It’s weird.

    • EEKstl

Dog noses!  You are going to get a LOT of credit for me on that one.  And you know what?  I like this look too.  The fact that she is stunningly beautiful may help a bit too, but she has the confidence to pull this off.  I even like the dog noses!

    • SpcilK

      WHAT THE HELL!!!!

    • Kayceed

I think it’s weird and kind of wonderful. Sorta avante-garde lite.

    • altalinda

I’m with you, she makes that dress work.  But the shoes aren’t a good choice.  For one thing, I think this would have looked better sans platforms.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

That’s not a dress, that’s a Star Trek costume.  (Dog noses is going to crack me up for the rest of the day)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KFTOGGKO6M5R5RE6SFV6E4LFYI Amanda

It looks like one of those stupid t-shirts that have the swimsuits on them.

Except it’s a metallic cocktail dress.

    • teensmom99

Dress is kind of interewting.  Shoes are kind of godawful.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Wait…baked potato dresses and hoof shoes are good? What is the world coming to?

      Sorry, not drinking this Kool-Aid!

    • schadenfreudelicious

yup, those shoes do indeed look like the dog’s breakfast…

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

I think it’s kinda cool, weird but cool.

    • http://annequichante.wordpress.com/ Anne

I think it’s ugly, but she looks so happy, I can’t totally hate it.

    • MilaXX

All I see is a Star Trek uniform.

    • mhleta

I think this is a really interesting dress, but she needed to embrace the crazy in it. The shoes and hair mumble “Come to my cottage for a spot of weak tea” rather than “Let’s transport to my space pod and snort moon dust from my belly button” which in this case would be more appropriate.

    • In_Stitches

I’m with you; I think it’s chic.  I don’t love the shoe choice, but the hair is great, the dress is great and most of all, she working it hard with a great smile and the right pose.

    • Eva_baby

This is actually tame and tasteful for the lovely Kat Graham.  I like it.  That last picture shows that the dress is really quite interesting.  So yeah, I am going with an ‘I like it on her’  And besides after the fugtastical mess that Lena Dunham has been putting on her body I am feeling generous.

    • http://twitter.com/monapily monapily

      no. absolutely not.

    • http://twitter.com/uyeahu Michelle Wilson

      I like it.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/VWVJVYZJCTXSQJA4E5PNEZLJA4 Jessica

Blech to all of it. Sorry, guys.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Dog noses is excellent.

For some reason, this dress is so bizarrely wrong that it’s right.  I want to hate it but I kinda semi-love it.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

The girl likes shiny things, something she needs to examine at this point.

    • Lisa Dugan

Well, her hair and makeup looks great!

    • NCDFan

The fact that the tan dress is over the silvery dress is just too strange. And I can’t deal with those hoof shoes. but Kat looks great.

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

Oh, this is just wrong from potato to dog nose!

    • Snailstsichr

Somehow I found this an awfully amusing dress to be wearing to a media event. Maybe 25 years from now someone is going use this dress as a jumping off place for a thesis on “the media and seeing through clothes.” (with apologies to Anne Hollander, but I couldn’t think of a witty title.
I think she should have done something more interesting with her hair and worn different shoes – this could have been a brilliant outfit instead of just an interesting dress. A lot of potential was wasted.

    • bellafigura1

I like it, but it’s too big! The fit on the model is perfect.

    • a_liking

Oh. Wow. I thought it was a metallic silver sheath dress with a beige coat over it. Which I actually kind of liked. As one dress though it is pretty much fug. And the shoes are awful.

    • ccm800

it SURE doesnt work for me and the dog nose remark is stellar!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Elizabeth-Poytinger-Baumer/1516981341 Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

compared to what she usually wears, this is a home run. brava.

    • mayavaly

I actually think it’s a really cool, funky look. I have to say that I think the shoes would have been better if they were completely pinky/purple. The dress could’ve been a teensy bit shorter, too. She probably dispensed with a purse ‘cos she could keep all her shit stuffed in the back. Probably got all kinds of goodies hidden back there.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It’s an interesting dress, and if it’s going to work for anyone, it would be her. The hair is OK, and the makeup looks great. But I hate the shoes.

    • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

The dress is interesting. I like it. I wish the taupe color were different somehow…maybe more chocolate colored. I think I’d love it then. The shoes, however–blech. I think they are hideous with this dress. I think I could like them with something else, though.

    • jw_ny

mirror/check makeup/toilets, baked potato, dog noses…you guys are on a roll!   The best wise crack was when you said you actually kind of like this look…haha … you’re killing me…good one!  ;)

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I didn’t see the dog noses until you mentioned it.  Now, I can’t unsee it.  LOVE IT!  The dress, OTOH, is hideous and the baked potato jokes are totally appropriate.

      • AnneElliot

The dog noses crack made me laugh out loud.

    • Lilithcat

Great dress!  It totally obviates the need for a purse.  You just shove your mad money down into that hem pocket.

      • AnneElliot

Also a great place to hide snacks. :-)

    • RoxieRider

I kind of love it. It’s so bizarre, and not, ultimately, unflattering, against all conceivable odds.

    • AzulFashion

      Baked potato.  Too funny.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Louise-Bryan/1177213326 Louise Bryan

She doesn’t look BAD in this, probably because she’s a very beautiful woman, and thin enough to be a model.  It’s just a really bizarre, designer-self-indulgent excuse for a dress.  The shoes are just plain ugly.

    • julnyes

Hate the dress, hate the shoes and hate the nails.

    • crackineggs

Love it – though I wish she wasn’t mucking about with the bottom section in the last photo, as it skews the dress.  They aren’t the best colours on her, but I can’t think of another combination that would create the needed contrast without looking tacky.

With those shoes I wonder if she feels the need to hike up a leg when she walks past a fire hydrant?

    • http://twitter.com/BrienneCalmer Brienne Calmer

      WTF?  No.  Everything is horrible.

    • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

      Horrible, from head to toe.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i actually like this maybe even a little more than you do. it might be one of my favorite outfits of the year.

edited two lines cos i am too tired to even write that much correctly.

    • RzYoung

I concur, this is fab and must be fun to wear!

    • rafraf25

I like the dress on her, but those shoes are ugly!

    • Deb Oswald

I do think that dress is kinda cool!  Very avante garde- shoes?  Not convinced.

    • MoHub

This dress might have worked were the shiny material deployed better. As it is, it looks like a giant patch hastily glued on to cover an unexpected rip.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

Heh, heh, heh…you’ve got to be kidding!
She actually went out wearing that???
It is to laugh. A lot!

    • jmorino08

What is going on with the back of the dress that she can have her hand on her waist and it still blouses out? Is it a cape or something cape-adjacent? Either way, I can’t look at it without thinking “potato sack” mostly because of the fit. She’s swimming in it!

    • Cathy S

I don’t like it. And the shoes are seriously awful. She has a really nice smile though.

    • MFGalena

I love the unusual dress but the shoes are all kind of wrong in general and for the dress specifically.

    • afabulous50

Just because it shows up on a runway doesn’t mean it’s good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

I like it, but I am not sold on the (non-) hairdo.

She’s pleased with herself, so that goes a long way.

    • eruannalle

Love her, but hate the dress.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HIZ7S2FRLC52NXARXQ4ERHNOGE Liz

I was thinking the shoes looked like clown noses were hastily stuck on the toes, but I really enjoy the dog nose analogy.  Well done.

    • http://twitter.com/Emelle M-e-l

      GAH!

    • kathryn_dc

      Now that’s a Frankendress!

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

it’s an inside out baked potato.  the foil’s supposed to be on the outside. anyways…this is just damn odd.  that is all.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

      Hideous.

Shark-nose or dog-nose, those shoes are also hideous. Uggggggh.

    • Sarah Rinehart

this look just isn’t working for me. she’s weirdly washed out in this. the shoes are an interesting choice, but not enough to pull the whole thing together.

    • neofashionista

      ewwww no wrong… hideous!

    • librarygrrl64

Call me a bitch, then, cause that is head-to-toe HIDEOUS!!!

    • bringbackbeatles

I love this dress. I don’t know why, but it is so working. I actually do like the dog nose shoes, lol, but they don’t go with this specific dress. Her hair could use something, but love the dress and makeup.
