Hamm & Pare in Hawaii for “Mad Men”

Posted on October 26, 2012

Because why not? Y’all loved the bathing suit pics yesterday. Check out Priscilla Presley getting married over there. Wonder that that’s all about?

Also: Megan Draper looks fabulous, even in a little cotton cover-up on the beach. Love her sandals and shades; not sold on the floppy hat.

Jon Hamm and Jessica Pare film a wedding scene for the new season of Mad Men in Maui, Hawaii.

I was a kid in the 60’s, and it just amazes me how right this show gets it. It totally brings back memories and feelings for me.

    • newleaf1

Me too!  I feel like I’m looking at my mom and dad, except my mom was the one with the cigarette.

      • I was thinking the same thing! I could so see my Mom in that dress/cover up (with a cigarette).

  • pattyw

Looks like Don is standing up in a wedding. The only person I could think of was Anna’s niece, but I don’t remember her looking like Priscilla.

    •  Looks as though he’s standing up for a serviceman. Who could be marrying someone he met in Hawaii?

    • BrooklynBomber

My guess is that, since Megan’s watching from the sidelines in beach clothes, some strangers who needed a witness approached them and asked him to do it (and he went back to the hotel and changed his clothes). Just a guess.

  • Could it be someone related to Megan??

  • Ohmygod I want that little dress!

    • Sobaika

As long as I get the shades.

    • leftcoastpickle

That was exactly my reaction! Squee!

    • ChaquitaPhilly

Me, too only it would have to be for the “me” of 50 years ago!

  • There are a few great nude beaches in Maui. Wouldn’t it be awful if you ran into Jon Hamm on one of them?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

We can always dream, can’t we?

  • My sisters wore the yellow version of that hat in June 1971 when our brother Dave got married!  Even in pretend 1966 or so, it’s hard to believe someone would think that tie would go with that jacket.

    • Qitkat

omg, I wore that yellow hat in 1981, when my brother got married, as a bridesmaid! In Pasadena, he wore a pale blue tux. We looked awesome 😉

Edited to correct date: 81 not 71. Time plays funny tricks with memory.

      • Squirrel270

My aunt, the bride, wore that hat in white at her wedding in 1980; my uncle also wore a baby blue tux.

  • MilaXX

can’t wait for Mad Men to return

  • formerlyAnon

Okay, we’re smack dab back in my childhood.  That wedding scene opened up a flood of Vietnam-related stuff.

If I’ve got any buried memories, this season may dig ’em out.

  • Diane_G

I think the big reason that hat is sending eye twitches is that it’s way too small for her head. It’s placed just so on top..she’s not wearing it, if that makes sense.

  • ferngilly

I say the bride is Dick Whitman’s love child.

    • Chickadeep

Oooooo, intriguing…or *the real* Don Draper’s love child? But Korean War was 1950-53, show now in ’67-’68 at the latest, so any child born as the result of a wartime liaison would be no older than 17 (born early 1951) so I don’t think the math adds up.

Hawaii was destination #1 for active duty Vietnam servicemen, though, and Hawaii even then had a very multiracial population…so my guess is shoreleave wedding (with local gal or Vietnamese sweetheart) with Don as a witness.

      • Glammie

Yep, she looks like one of those Japanese/Phillipino/etc. mixes that are common among locals–I think the Vietnam shore leave guess is right on.

  • siriuslover

I LOVE that green blazer. It’s just awesome. So is the little coverup for Megan. The camera’s a nice touch. And the floppy hat is stupid.

  • dellagraceslife

Word. I totally had those vintage sandals….

    • Lilak

As for me :  A not-much-longer version of Pare’s little number … in those very colors … but PAISLEY (yikes).

Wish I had more of the old stuff on hand.  Space too limited to keep all the 60s-70s stuff — had to sacrifice the wardrobe for the shelves of LPs.  (Hoping TLo won’t revoke my BK privileges!)

  • ferngilly

I say the bride is Dick Whitman’s love child.

  • StellaZafella

They found the Lavendar Flower Power print at the bottom of Judy Carn’s trunk. The floppy hat was a gift from Joanne Worley. Jon Hamm’s coat and tie came from the estate of Dick Martin.

    • dress_up_doll

      You bet your sweet bippee!

      • Rand Ortega

         LOL! Sock It To Me!

    • Qitkat

      For the younger BK’s:
      Laugh-In 🙂

    • Ozski

I was just looking at images of Judy Carne and realized that Julie Bowen is a dead-ringer for her. If she dyed her hair brown and got a pixie, she could totally pull it off!!!  ttp://www.retrosellers.com/images/jl131.jpg

    •  Yes, Joanne Worley, now it comes flooding back.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

       Spot on!

  • miagain

She looks peeved in the last two shots…

  • AnnaleighBelle

I’m a little sad we’re losing the 50s feel to Don’s clothes.  He looked so beautiful in them.

    • Glammie

Yeah, he’s also looking blowsier and less dapper.  They’re aging him.  Sigh.

  • I don’t hate her floppy hate. I want her cover up and sandals.  Can’t wait to see what the story is on this scene….

  • dress_up_doll

They certainly did get it right. Right down to Megan’s Kodak Instamatic 124. I still have mine!

    • I have mine too!

    • formerlyAnon

There is definitely one in my brother’s house (formerly my parents’ house & that’s exactly one of the things he’ll hold on to until he has to sell the house & do some weeding).

  • snarkykitten

ugh I’m so behind on Mad Men. Curse you AMC, for not having season 5 available  for streaming! 🙁 🙁

    • They’re about to start airing Season 5 this sunday, I’ve got my dvr nice and ready for it.  Finally watched the first 3 seasons on Netflix.  Actually, I signed up for netflix SPECIFICALLY to watch Mad Men.

      • snarkykitten

I don’t have cable 🙁 otherwise I’d tivo it as it aired.

    • I watched the whole season on amazon.

      • snarkykitten

through prime or did you buy the seasons?

  • Qitkat

Don looks magnificent! Megan is perfect 60s adorable. /sniff/ I was just hitting legal age.

  •  I have vague memories of Laugh In. When did that end?

    • Qitkat

The link said ’73, with 3 specials scattered over next several years.

      •  Ah, ok, that’s why I remember it. I was *does math in head* 6 when it ended.

        • Qitkat

          Just a wee child 😉

  • tallgirl1204

Wow– there is a SERIOUS conflict between Don and Megan’s outfits.  And I bet the wedding, with the Asian girl, will bring flashbacks of all kinds.

    • Tara

I thought the exact same thing.

  • Ozski

They really nailed it with the jacket, cover-up and lady accessories, but what’s REALLY authentic is DD’s sunburn! Also, I agree with BrooklynBomber here. I think he got reluctantly roped into it because THINGS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO Dick/Don!!!

  • decormaven

Ohhh, it’s a Vera print coverup! Love, love, love it! Keep the Mad Men photos coming, please.

  • I would wear that beach cover-up as an everyday dress.

  • But every woman past 20 in the 60s had one of those cloth floppy-hat monstrosities for the beach.  Even my mom who hated hats had one…

    • formerlyAnon

My 3 or 4 coolest outfits of the period – the ones bought by my childless godmother – each had a hat of that shape, a couple of them virtually identical save color variation to that photo, a couple made of the garment’s fabric so I was head to thigh in the same kicky pattern.

They blew away, though. Lost one from a boat in a thunderstorm on a lake & one at a roadside scenic outlook somewhere.

  • neofashionista

    This is so cooooool
    I can’t wait

  • Trisha26

Jessica is such a deer in the headlights…still can’t decide if I like her on the show or not. Hate the hat.

  • Donna Schmidt

The hat is so typical of what we wore then.

  • fwooper

Don looks old enough to be Megan’s dad.

    • kcarb1025

It’s just in your head. Pare is only two years younger than J.Jones in real life, and there’s only a 14 year difference between Dick and Megan on the show.

      • fwooper

None of that changes that I think he looks old enough to be her dad. Jon Hamm looks years older than he is, both on and off the show.

        • Dot

          Seriously? He’s 41. I don’t think he looks years older than 41.

  • lucasuk82

Wow – even the bouquet is a reference to Priscilla Presley.  Make up is way less harsh though.

  • kcarb1025

Lol in the first one/two photos Don is looking at the groom with such a teary expression, that it looks like they they’re the ones getting married. Cute.

  • naomiow

cool….. except I don’t think rope-style ti-leaf leis (the green part with the leaves of the lei Don’s wearing) were worn much until the 1980’s.  Tho’ I was only a tot in the ’60’s.

  • ZaraME

The bride looks so cute and adorable. Don and Megan looking casual smart but rich as usual. I think her wedding and engagement rings are very striking and beautiful.

  • This was before my time but I remember for the anniversary they did a special and Goldie Hawn said, “They told us it wouldn’t last. They were right!” and then she laughs a lot, it was great.

  • kathrineb

Wow. Megans look is really so delightful! Hope no one care if I dress like this is 2013.
