Jessica Chastain for Crash Magazine

Posted on October 01, 2012

For such a conventionally pretty woman, Jessica has a highly unusual tendency to look her best when she’s photographed looking… well… highly unusual.

Jessica Chastain covers the Fall 2012 issue of Crash Magazine photographed by Blossom Berkofsky and styled by Isabel Dupre. Hair: Renato Campora. Makeup: Tina Turbow.

We don’t care what y’all say. That last shot is hilariously fabulous. She’s like a couture teletubbie.

She might not be quite Swinton-level in her ability to rock the odd, but she’s getting there.

The first B&W image is pretty stunning but she looks virtually unrecognizable.

    • Carolina B. Rocha

@google-822a793975b2cbe909e94a39f0180fa6:disqus She has one of those faces that fascinate me the same way Tilda’s does. I make $82h while I’m traveling the world. Last week I worked by my laptop in Rome, Monti Carlo and finally Paris…This week I’m back in the USA. All I do are easy tasks from this one cool site. check it out,

  • Heather

What IS that giant pink thing? Is it from the same line as Lady Gaga’s Violet Beauregarde outfit of a week or two ago?

    •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I’m pretty sure it is, Comme des Garçons :)

    • RebeccaKW

It reminds me Bert’s PR art challenge design.

  • poggi

Is it weird to say that she has expressive hair?  She is great in these, but whoever did her hair is kind of amazing.  It totally sets the tone of each shot.  Great work Renato Campora.

    • lbl

It’s not. I think I was staring at her hair more than her face, to be honest.

    • NC_Meg

I was thinking the same thing, thought not in those terms. I couldn’t come up with a way to describe but but expressive it right.

    • In_Stitches

Nice catch.  A manly pompadour, dowager curls, a boho blowout, chopstick buns and a wet look, all for one shoot?

    • marlie

I noticed too, and I really love that she has vastly different hairstyles in each photo, rather than the same hair & makeup and just a different dress.

    • Nelliebelle1197

I actually don’t really think she is  very pretty – just looks like an attractive mom in the PTA to me.  Her hair IS her beauty.

  • Anna Maria Diamanti

I hate the cover, it looks like her eyes are sinking in. And close your mouth! Otherwise, great pics.

  • Adrianna Grężak

“couture teletubbie” that made me laugh out loud!

    • AliciaChamisa

Me, too, and I also love to look at “sculpture clothes”

  • DaringMiss

I like the chiffon trench coat shot best.  She looks so *pretty* in that picture and she isn’t a woman who usually photographs pretty.

    • tereliz

I do, too. It’s just so lovely and happy without looking forced. Just beautiful!

  • Winter_White

Love her beauty in the second two photos, with the straight hair.  She has one of those faces that fascinate me the same way Tilda’s does.  (Male versions include Eddie Redmayne, Cillian Murphy, Mads Mikkelsen, etc.)

    • foodycatAlicia

       Definitely SWINTONesque.

  • PeaceBang

Yes, my first thought was “The second coming of Swinton.”

  • Kristin McNamara

I doubt her right foot could ever look like it was in more agony than it is in the last picture……….

  • neofashionista

she is like a baby swinton though maybe in another 20 years she will be full on postpubescent swinton

  • nannypoo

Interesting and beautiful. Now she just needs to figure out how to dress herself.

  • PrunellaV

Definitely Swinton-esque. Why is it the women with no eyelashes can do the Swinton best?

  • Lisa

    Very unique, and totally beautiful!

  • norseofcourse

LOVE the one with the striped turtleneck – Swinton meets Katharine Hepburn.

    • 3boysful

I was just going to remark on the Hepburn-ish photo!

  • NurseEllen

If they ever do a Katharine Hepburn biopic, I nominate Ms. Chastain for the title role.  she is really channelling Kate in that shot with the striped turtleneck.  AND I want the earrings in the cover shot.  So gorgeous!

  • Wendi126

The sixth pic down is really grotesque. Her head looks distorted and the proportions are crazy. She looks like the kid from Mask’s sister. That’s not good. I like the others.

  • ringthing

Very cool. The photo with the striped turtleneck looks very similar to a photo of Katherine Hepburn, including the hair.

    • MajorBedhead

That must be why that’s my favourite shot.

  • kategs

She should hire that stylist for her RC looks.  She looks terrific!

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

I think she is a bit odd and I like that. I hope she continues to wear it with pride. I love the last photo and also the one with the coat dress and her hair all fluffy.

  • marlie

I totally thought Swinton-esque before I even scrolled down to the bottom of the post. She looks really striking and interesting in these photos. Great job!

  • Contralto

She is very, very striking.  I like her look.

  • Fucking A.

I love it. But maybe I’m a bit biased because I’m in love with her.  That shot in the striped turtleneck is perfection.

  • Anathema_Device

I like her wildly different looks here. I agree with the other BKs on the striped turtleneck shot. She looks fantastic in that shot. I also like the 7th one, which I think is the same as a the one on the cover.

  • alyce1213

Bringing the Katharine Hepburn realness in #5.  The three shots in sheer black with white collar are a bit bizarre — very strange angles — but overall these are great.  She may be conventionally beautiful but she is in an unusual way, if that makes any sense. An oxymoron.

  • schadenfreudelicious

she certainly has some dead looking eyes (literally), in that first shot, oddly disturbing but effective…

  • Jacqueline Wessel

These black and white photos are beautiful, but the color ones are not as fab. The cover shot especially makes her look like she has the flu.

  • joything

It’s her cleft chin that does it for me.

  • clevRcat

She really has a wonderful face!

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I don’t understand the choices they made with her hair – flat and wet do her a major disservice.

  • MilaXX

They had me right up until the last look. Thems clown clothes

  • m0r0

Neh, looks like she’s catching flies with that mouth. Hardly a beautiful collection of photos.

  • lizajane1776

In addition to Katherine Hepburn, in some of the other shots I see Janis Joplin and other 1970’s icons (but my brain is too tired to drag a name out. Sorry.) I wonder if they were trying to showcase beautiful women through the decades.

  • Haley Buchanan

Sorry to say, but she does absolutely nothing for me.  A lot of these poses just look awkward.  She needs to close her mouth.  I just don’t get Tilda Swinton from this AT ALL.

  • DTLAFamilies

Sorry, only Bjork could rock that last outfit.

  • frankystein123

I wouldn’t call her ‘conventionally’ beautiful. Yes, she’s stunning, but definitely not conventional.

  • TieDye64

This chick is surprisingly, insanely good here (though couture teletubbie has me in tears). I guess conventional pretty just isn’t her thing? Hmmm.

  • RzYoung

2.5 on the Swintonian Scale I think.

  • M Carlson

Her face totally reminds of Michael Fassbender.

  • MzzPants

These are the best photos of her I’ve ever seen.

  • crash1212

That last is fabulous…and this woman was MADE for black and white photography. Really great spread. Thanks T Lo!

  • Judy_J

These are great photos….so glad to see she’s willing to be unconventional.

  • jmorino08

I just wish she would close her mouth.

  • Aly Light

Really? I think these shots look like images of someone with a bad cold whose cold medicine is slowly kicking in through the course of the series…

  • monapily

What’s with the gaping mouth posing! It’s gross!

  • Beverly Nash

Jessica Chastain is sort of beautiful, but she has never been conventionally pretty. Selena Gomez, as one of many examples, is conventionally pretty. Compare them.

  • StellaZafella

Looking one’s best when looking highly unusual is a good definition of great drag.
I sigh for the ‘Hepburnesque” head shot.

  • kschwarting

Does anyone else see the resemblance to Sissy Spacek in that second shot?

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    2nd & 3rd shots – getting a Julianne Moore vibe.

  • ojosazules

I wouldn’t call her pretty. She’s gorgeous. Love these.

  • EEKstl

Me likey.  And as for those pink pumps in the last shot, me REALLY likey.

  • Lisa Dugan

The B & W profile shot and the one in the sweater dress are especially great.  A little too much open mouth however.

  • Sara Munoz Munoz

  • margaret meyers

Nothing much here… and close your mouth for at least one shot, OK?

  • Susie K

In the cover shot she looks like an android. Her face is so sculptural; I wish she had eyebrows! They need to pencil them in more strongly.

In the big hair shot where she’s smiling, she looks like the love interest from the first Raiders of the Lost Ark…

And in the pompadour shot she is simply Fabulous and Amazing.

  • PhillipWilde

I love the shot with the coat and the big hair.

In the one with the sweater, she looks like Lana Del Rey.

  • shelley514

She’s no where near at Swinton’s level for rocking the odd.  She reminds me very much of January Jones for some reason, but a little bit edgier, but not much.

  • ccm800

I dont find her conventional at all…she has very big – I’ll say it masculine features. her face is quite androgynous to me. Very generous jawline and slightly heavy brow. I find her wuite unusual – I think her stylist fail when they try to make her conventional. She is anything but.
