In or Out: Rashida Jones in Peter Pilotto

Posted on October 03, 2012

Miss Rashida’s personal style, which can best be described as “Frumpy secretary crossed with Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane,” does not appeal to us, for the most part. So we should, if we were being perfectly fair, be singing her praises for wearing something like this:

Rashida Jones attends the 2012 Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award Ceremony honoring Quincy Jones at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, California in a Peter Pilotto dress paired with Valentino shoes.

Peter Pilotto Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Josephine Skriver

But whoever said we were fair?

We love the dress on her and applaud her for going such a bold route. But the shoes are really bothering us. We don’t mind that they’re matchy-pink because with such a wild print, introducing a new color would be a mistake, so picking out the least prominent color in the dress was the right way to go. It’s just that they’re so … on point, y’know? With the white trim and the little studs? In this case, it’s not so much the color that’s too matchy to the dress, but the style. Add a clutch that seems to have nothing to do with the rest of the look and some incredibly limp hair (and it looked so cute the other day) and it’s half working and half NOT working for us.

OUT! My eyes!

The Minions with Opinions pretty much hated Rose McGowan’s crazy gown, voting it OUT.

    OUT. I can’t.

  • Every dress she wears needs to be a few inches shorter, or she should start doing hip pantsuits.  The blah length of this and other dresses you’ve recently featured her in are what add to the frump factor.  OUT.

    • Cathy S

She would look great in hip pantsuits.

  • stagmania

IN. I actually kind of like the shoes.

  • Out. It’s a great dress on its own, but that hair, those shoes, and that lipstick? No no no.

  • For me, this is an OUT.  I dislike what that dress is doing to her shape.  And her hair is a wreck. It looks over-processed.  The shoes are a little Barbie for my taste, as well.  Lordy, I’m being tough to please today.

    • mjude

yes you are my friend! 🙂  as for the shoes tell me they are not to big for her?

      •  At least I’m not deluding myself.  lol
Yep, at least a size too big for her wee tootsies.

        • mjude

LOL!  shoes that are to big always push me over the edge.

    • AudreysMom

you’re in good company. There isn’t much about this whole look that is working, and the dress demolishing any semblance of her shape is probably the worst. No, the matchy Barbie shoes tie for worst.

  • BazoDee

OUT – the lines are not flattering AT ALL!

  • MzzPants

OUT.  Forget the dress.  That hair is criminal.

  • mmc2315

OUT.  She’s so cute, but I can’t with that dress which does nothing for her figure, and her hair makes me weep.  She has soooo much potential.  Needs a great stylist.  Stat.

  • lalahartma

    Out!  My eyes!  Lol.

  • IN. The dress is adorable. I don’t like the shoes either and if I got anywhere near her I would wield my comb and part her hair on the side but the dress is IN.

    • kryten8

She did a photo shoot not too long ago where they brushed her bangs back and she looked better than ever! I’m voting OUT until she can get rid of the stringy bangs.

  • Jill Satterfield

Out! I’m all in favor of prints, but that is a hideous design.

  • BeeBeauNYC

God, her hair looks awful – if you make a bazillion dollars a year, you should be able to get the color look the same throughout. And there’s way too much going on this dress – it reminds me a little of Mondo’s style, but it needs to be edited because it’s too busy. OUT.

    • Mary229

I hate the hair too but to be fair….my sense is that this two toned hair color thing is on purpose here?  Trust me…I don’t like it.  But this would have to be on purpose.  Right?

      • BeeBeauNYC

Lordy, if that two-toned hair is on purpose, then she’s getting some really bad advice and she should spend her bazillion dollars elsewhere.

        • Mary229

I agree.  I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt I guess.   But yes I hate the two tone hair.

  • In. Hate the shoes but can’t help but want her to dress like this more

  • teensmom99

I love Rashida but again this is an out.  It’s like she takes everything she puts on & makes it frumpy.  She has a great body and is beautiful but the dress does not look good on her. The one thing I like about this, actually, is the shoes, not the dress.

  • janetjb

  • VicksieDo

OUT for the hair!  The rest is ok, even the shoes.

  • Oh that hair. Can’t the “Ombre” thing just go away now? It always looks like they are really really overdue for a root touchup.

  • LuisaNL

for the hair alone, OUT. cute dress, though.

  • Lola67

In. I like the dress quite a lot and though the shoes are a little matchy, it’s on trend right now whether we like it or not. Hair isn’t great, but I think she has rather thin hair that can be a challenge sometimes.

  • Violina23

In, not perfect, but there is more right than wrong

  • My sweet, sweet Rashida.  I love you so much, and I really like this dress on you, but OUT.  Trust me, this is hurting me more than it does you.

  • NC_Meg

I hate the shoes and why is her hair so sad?

    • megohd

she has the worst hair. I can’t fathom why it’s always so lame.

      • NC_Meg

It looks very fine and thin and as someone that also has fine and thin hair, it doesn’t have to look like this. I have basic hair styling skills (like, I know how to use a straightener, blow dryer, and curling iron and little else) and my hair looks better than this on a daily basis.

  • MissAnnieRN

I would cut a bitch for those shoes.  Though I would never wear them with this dress because I TOTALLY AGREE about them being too matchy in style.

God I would wear the hell out of those.  White jeans?  Yes.  Denim pencil skirt?  Check.  Navy dress?  Hell yes.

  • 3boysful

Kind of meh for such a colorful outfit, but I WANT the shoes.

  • Catiline

OUT.  That dress is not doing her shape any favors.

  • Out. Too busy with the shoes and I hate the neckline.

  • altalinda

Out, mostly because of the prim white color, and the crisscrossing going on around her breasts makes her look like she’s wearing some sort of tight harness that’s pulling her up.  I think that’s a tough dress for mere mortals to pull off.

  • The print makes her look like she has a flashlight shining out of her vagina.

    • wisenhar

I was thinking it looked like her cooch was trying to “beam up” her shoes.  OUT.

  • msdamselfly

OUT Cant stand the lip color

Her last look (on Whiteboard) was so attractive and cute.

  •  O U T !

  • hyperionic

In. Something about Rashida just makes her look frumpy. I don’t think she can help it. Put this exact outfit on say Elizabeth Banks and she would werq it. This is a lot better than usual though. She still needs to stop with the stringy bangs and the ombre effect which just makes her hair look fried.

  • Judy_J

Sorry, this is just not working for me.  Mostly, I’m bothered by her hair, which looks like it needs shampoo desperately.  But the dress looks much better on the model…perhaps Ms Jones is a bit too curvy for this dress, or maybe she should have gone with the shorter runway length. At any rate, I vote OUT.

  • In. I like the shoes and print in the dress too.

  • lizajane1776

In. The only thing wrong here is her hair. But I am grading on a curve.

  • OUT. There’s possibly one element too much in the dress. The diagonal seam across the boob is making my eye twitch. The shoes are alright, though I would have probably gone with black.

  • MissMariRose

IN, just because her fine, limp hair makes me feel better about my own. Stars! They’re just like us.

    • shirab

It’s heartening, isn’t it? That seems to be the one teeny-tiny spot where the genetic lottery didn’t go completely her way. With an African-American father and a Jewish mother, if I’m remembering correctly, there might have been other possible hair outcomes.

  • BrooklynBomber

I think she’s cute, in general, but the dress is Out. Not flattering on her, and probably not flattering on anyone; it’s okay as a concept, but not as an actual dress.

  • phrenk

    IN, works for me!

  • TSkot

HIDEOUS dress.  On ANYBODY.  Way WAY OUT!

  • j_anson

That clutch doesn’t make sense at all. Still, I wouldn’t call this an OUT. It’s, I don’t know, not a home run, but, a single or a double.

  • OUT – I don’t even like the dress all that much. That white collar is just a bridge too far, in my opinion.

  • Mary229

I love this woman but that hair hurts my eyes.   I wish someone would fix that hair.

The dress is cute.  And yes, she does look like Margot Kidder.  Which is why I think there was zero chance she was going to get cast as Lois Lane in the new movie.  I think they want people to think “new” and Rashida really does look like Kidder circa 1977.

  • another_laura

In because I like that she wore that bold dress – I do hate the shoes, though.

  • ojosazules

I think it’s all just dreadful. Out.

  • CQAussie

This is just not working for me.  It’s like 3 different outfits fighting for attention in one dress + ugly ass shoes.  OUT.

  • lilibetp

I didn’t know she was 6 months pregnant!  Or is it just the dress making her look that way.

  • Pants_are_a_must

That dress packs her up like a sausage and I DESPISE the shoes and clutch. OUT.

  • In. Love the dress.

  • Out. It’s attacking her.

  • Cheesely

OUT! She looks like she got caught in a rainstorm (hair) dress is crazy ugly (sorry Peter Pilotto) the ONLY thing I actually like are the shoes.

  • Trisha26

Out. I almost wonder if she lost a bet…

  • ralish

She’s so adorable, but I just hate everything she wears. Go up a size, take the skirt up a few inches, put the hair up, and get rid of the peter pan collar and clutch.

  • In! Because I think she’s moving in the right direction and needs some encouragement.

  • Tatiana Luján

Her hair didn’t look cute the other day!

  • Oh Ann, you beautiful trainwreck. You are OUT, but it doesn’t have to be this way!

  • RebeccaKW

I think Out.  I don’t mind the shoes, but the dress, while cute, doesn’t seem to fit her well.  Or maybe she’s just uncomfortable.  Her stance is very stiff, like she can’t raise her arms or bend over.  I think the length is awkward.  That clutch is hideous on it’s own and here it’s even worse.

And the hair.  I get you have fine hair, but that’s why you PAY a professional to do something with it.

I also don’t like the lipstick matching the shoes.

  • Miss_Led

Goofball. The fit is bad, the collar is junior high Catholic school girl and her hair is atrocious. OUT.

  • Margaret Covert

i cant get passed the fugly hair.  Grow out the bangs.  bleh.

  • Rashida is so smart, talented, and so so pretty. She does indeed often dress badly.

That said, I like this on her, tho I find the dress a bit too tight and the shoes seem a bit too large (seems de rigeur). I do, however, like the dress-and-shoe combo. What I don’t like about the hair is not its limpness, but its two-tone-ness. As a fellow fine-haired girl, I would advise Rashida to stop straightening and just let it be curly. I spend way less time styling my hair and it looks a lot better to boot.

    So to summarize: IN. Mostly.

  • MilaXX

OUT. That not her dress, the shoes are not only too matchy, they are fugly. The bag bag doesn’t go style wise & I kinda hate the highlights in her hair.

  • Sara__B

OUT. Her hair needs help. Cut, color, conditioning, and style. Yikes.

  • Out. The dress is too busy, the hair is awful and the shoes are, as you said, too on point.

  • OUT, im afraid. i just dont like this dress very much, but at least shes wearing it well.
but its either those shoes or that clutch with this dress, not both. dont like her two-tone hair, either.

  • DCSheehan

In. Its making her look heavier than she is but I applaud the cray-crayness of the whole ensemble.

  • l_c_ann

She and the dress just don’t get along.

  • Awful dress. The print criss-crosses on the bust then curves down the sides and meets at the crotch? It’s just one big spotlight on the pelvis. Ugh.

Her hair is too fine for long bangs. It’s a cute look but she needs a ton of product to make this work.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. The hair looks like the hair of an ordinary person dressed to receive an award but who wouldn’t even dream of spending hundreds of dollars on fake hair and professional styling just for one event.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Out my eyes indeed, cause all i see is several pair of eyes staring at me from her midsection….

    • LJCdoc

I was going to maybe say in, although I share TLo’s concern with the shoes. But now I can’t unsee those eyes. so Out.

  • Kate4queen

OUT. It just looks all wrong on her around the chest and the shoes… sorry I just can’t.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out.  The silhouette of the dress looks fine, but the print is vomit inducing.  Hair and makeup are terrible.  Again, another beautiful woman obviously saddled with a horrible stylist.

  • afabulous50

    OUT! My eyes!

  • Larkin21

I think the dress looks great on her and I like the shoes. She could do better on hair and make-up but I still give her an IN!

  • OUT. She still looks like a frumpy secretary, only now she’s the “zany” in the office.

  • Ozski

BEAUTIFUL lady! FUN dress (that needs hemming)! AWFUL hair! Rashida would look amazing with a gamine hairstyle, I think!

  • iheartbuffy

I wholeheartedly DISAPPROVE of that neckline. And the dress does nothing for her nice tan arms.

  • Vickiefantastico

Out, although she gets points for trying!

  • Kayceed

My first reaction was “ACK!” so I guess that’s an out.

  • OUT – I can’t find anything polite to day about that dress.

  • Ha ha ha, my eyes! You guys crack me up. Sigh! Well, I’m on the fence. Dress and pumps are cute, but that hair is killing me! I’m going to hace to say Out!

  • PinkLemon

the hair’s tragic. the shoes are too perfect. yes, that’s possible. OUT.

  • bellafigura1

Ai ai ai. Or aye aye aye. And I’ll throw in an Oy for full coverage.  That dress is IMPOSSIBLE to wear on any one with a hint of a curve, the print is thoroughly unforgiving and chaotic and ugh.  And yeah, her hair is an ongoing problem, she needs a fluffer on the payroll.

  • Le_Sigh

OUT.  I can’t with that hair.

  • Aly Light

In… though her hair looks awful.

  • put a bag over her head and she looks fabulous.  i love the dress enough to make up for the rest, though, so i say in.  could do without the peter pan collar.

  • Deb Oswald

    Just No

  • kimmeister

Aw, what a couldabin.  I don’t mind the shoes or clutch at all.  The hair is atrocious, and I think the dress would look better without that cutesy little collar.  It needed a V-neck!

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  I could overlook a lot of the problems if she just did something with her hair, but she didn’t, so I can’t.

  • DylanCurtis

It’s like a little girl playing dress-up. OUT.

  • Her bangs are the worst!

  • Anathema_Device

Out. She has Ginnifer Goodwin’s issues: They both really like a certain style that doesn’t work on them.

  • EEKstl

OUT.  Like the dress and the shoes, but together it just looks as if she is trying too hard.  A simple pink suede pump would have worked wonders.  And ditch the ankle bracelet.  And do SOMETHING with your hair, Missy!  You’re being PHOTOGRAPHED!

  • IN because I like it mostly and because she’s a Beautiful Tropical Fish.

  • Are those eyeballs going down the middle of the dress? Because I kind of dig it except for the creepy eyeballs.

  • Sepianne

It looks like she never feels pretty.

  • No, no, no, no, no.

  • melanie0866

Out.  Needs to be above the knee, and I hate the little collar, and her hair is awful.

  • I like the colours, I like the patterns. I hate the fact it looks like she’s shooting magical rays from her vagina

  • Lisa Kramp

I’m starting to feel about Peter Pilotto the same way most of the BK’s here feel about Stella McCartney. And wash your hair, Rashida! Out.

  • nannypoo

Everything about this dress is ugly and she looks awful in it.

  • Monabel

  • While I love that Rashida is apparently the one actress who doesn’t bet her life on hair extensions, I would love to see her rocking some Diana Ross fabulous lioness mane one day!Out, this is so not her!

  • Candigirl1968

I would love to get rid of the collar, switch out the bag (too pink) and shoes out (too pink, too busy for that much dress).

  • OUT!  Now, go home.  Try again.  Come back when you’re not dressed like the Dylan’s Candy Bar challenge on PR.

  • unbornfawn

This dress has one element too many. For me it is the collar. A simple round or scoop neck and this dress would have been killer. Add limp hair, a purse that doesn’t go and shoes that are off, plain pink pumps maybe? I have to give her an OUT. So close.

  • Jangle57

  • crash1212

I love the shoes and the dress. I’d ditch the collar on the dress and the clutch….and def do something about the hair. I’m a 50/50 IN/OUT – can I do that?

  • zbkat

All I see are the creepy eyes peeking out of the little windows up and down her torso. This dress is the equivalent of a bad acid trip.

  • Pterodactyl111

  • Haley Buchanan

Honestly, I don’t care what she’s wearing.  This is an OUT for those sad, sorry bangs alone.

  • TLo, have you lost your minds?  This is what I see when I push on my eyeballs- PLUS a frumpy secretary collar.  OUT!  OUT!  KILL IT WITH FIRE!

  • Yikes. Out.

  • OUT. too… everything.

  • lesmaha

  • jw_ny

    that dress is seizure inducing.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Good googly moogly, her mom is Peggy Lipton!  Her dad is Quincy Jones!  There’s looks and talent in her genes, and a boatload of money to play with.  Why can’t this girl dress and groom herself properly?  I love her, but no.  OUT.

    • julnyes

She looks so much like her mother -wow! Looking through pictures of Rashida I think her hair would look great if she left it wavy and grew it out a bit.

  • carpediva

So far OUT it can be seen from space.

  • lrhoff

She needs help with her hair…..badly.

  • littlemac8

That dress is just dopey looking with that little collar on top of that figure distorting cut.  Who needs it?  OUT!  She seems so appealing – I wish her wardrobe would flatter her.

  • AnneElliot

OUT.  I hate the dress, it’s making me dizzy.  And her hair just makes me sad.

  • aristida_girl

out, sorry, those high collars are not for everyone…

  • Out.  Nice try, but I hate that collar and that clutch.  She needs to do something with the hair, too.

  • Major OUT!

  • That is no one’s dress.

  • guest2visits

First, for Godsake; somebody make her grow her bangs out and then part it slightly off-center.
I want to say grow-the-eff-up every time I see that hair cut.  SORRY.

  • RzYoung

IN, it’s all working for me actually, I love that little white collar

  • trisker

I vote IN — I think she looks great here.  She’s not a “styled” type — apparently doesn’t go for that, but this look is bright and cheerful.  I don’t mind the hair either — same argument.

  • trisker

  • L.

    OUT, too much going on.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Love the dress, hate the HAIR (and the shoes)!
Can’t she look in the mirror, at least, even if she won’t work with a stylist.
    Sadly…it’s OUT!

  • I don’t know if its just me but I HATE bangs that aren’t full. If you’ve got a tonne of gaps in your front fringe make it a side one because it just doesn’t look good.

  • Good golly. Out.

  • Sarah Rinehart

  • TieDye64

Even though she’s really giving it a go, which is a refreshing change for her, I say no. OUT. Not her dress.

  • librarygrrl64

Love her, but hate most everything here (especially the hair). OUT.
