IN or OUT: Naya Rivera in Diane von Furstenberg

Posted on October 23, 2012

We’ve noted before that Naya has a thing for “sexy secretary” looks. Which is great, because they suit her. We think this bright pink DVF suit is fun and has the potential to be styled in a chic and modern way.

Naya Rivera attends the Young Storytellers Foundation’s ‘The Biggest Show’ 2012 Gala in a Diane von Furstenberg suit paired with a Jimmy Choo clutch.

Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Tara Gill

And while she’s working like gangbusters to jazz this suit up with some colorful contrasting shoes and a bright white purse – isn’t this all reading a little real estate agent on acid? The pussy bow and the buttoned-up feel? The trying-too-hard shoes? We hate to say it, but the model is styled much better than Naya and provides a pretty good illustration of how this suit should be worn. It needs a much sexier vibe to work, this is taking it into Legally Blonde territory – and not in a good way.

But we’re ready to be told we’re being picky and mean.

Vote Now!

IN! It’s sexy enough, you whores!

OUT! Sunday School teacher who’s looking to marry.

The minions with opinions mostly agreed that we should continue ragging in Julianne Moore when she insists on dressing this way. She was voted OUT.

Worse than Real Estate, it reads Boca.  The dark matte lip, the teal and pink combo, the high blouse…lengthen that skirt, give her some hose and she’s ready for her 90th at the home.

    • As someone within drivin’ distance of Boca, all I can say is spot on.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Agreed. Definite Out!

    • Janet B

My grandma in Boca would have never worn the skirt.  Always slacks because the office was too cold.

    • decormaven

Miami Vice flashback. And anything else under that jacket than that blouse.

    • Dagney

Boca real estate agent.  From 1987.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

OMG the first thing i said was “Boca” and started humming ‘thank you for being a friend…’

    •  Barbie Playhouse in Boca. Those are the exact colors.

  • blogless

I’m not sure how you’d style something like this. That pink is just – too much.

Although on the plus side if she ever went missing they could easily spot her from Google Earth.

  • I think her skin color is coming across as orange in these pictures, which clashes with the pink. I dunno. I think it’s an Out.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

That’s why you’ll never see Michael Kors wearing pink.

  • afabulous50

OUT – OUT – OUT I say!!  Those shoes & blouse make the look worse than it is already…

  • Sobaika

It looks like she was at a charity-type event, so I understand her not going fully sexual. But she really dropped the ball with the accessories. It could have been fun but appropriate, but she’s way off the mark. Out.

  • ojosazules

Very sharp little suit and the styling obliterates it. Out.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

The long sleeves peeking out are really hurting it. The look could probably use less fabric on the decolletage as well.

  • Lisa Kramp

Cute suit; AWFUL blouse and shoes. The clutch is meh, too.

  • charlotte

    My eyes! Out.

  • hyperionic

Yeah she should had worn the boobtacular shirt and awesome shoes on the model.

  • BazoDee

OUT -the blouse ruins it. Her make-up is flawless however!

    • JillSpill

Totally agree.  Perfect from the neck up!

  • AlexisPayne

That pussy bow blouse kills this look and I don’t care for the shoes, OUT.

  • Joyce VG

OUT!  My eyes hurt now from that color. Thanks a lot T Lo.  DvF’s clothes are usually so divine.

  • Out, sorry, it looks like the outfit of a reporter love interest in a kid’s cartoon.

  • hughman

Please turn off all electronic devices. Once the captain has turned off the “No Glamour” sign, I’ll come around with an assortment of more interesting clutches. Thank you.

  • imspinningaround

It needs a different, louche-looking white shirt underneath.  A drapey white tee from The Row, or even a cheapie white Hanes men’s  undershirt would work better than that blouse.

  • deathandthestrawberry

I like everything but the blouse. I’m giving it a tepid IN.

  • I’d go with different shoes. Otherwise its an IN for me.

  • OUT.  Don’t like the shoes at all but the real killer is the blouse.  It’s hiding all the sharp details of that really cool jacket!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out, sadly.  I love DVF, love the suit, but the styling ruins it.

  • kaycem

  • Out. Buttoned up like that, it’s making her look very thick-wasted. The blouse is awful and the shoes…I just can’t even with teal and pink. It’s not just realtor-on-acid, it’s 80s-realtor-on-acid.

Her face and hair look amazing, though.

    • Dot

Thick and wasted on acid, man.

  • Love Naya, don’t like this. Out!

  • Samantha Irene

nope you’re not picky – she’s out. don’t know who told her to put those shoes or that top with it but ugh. I do love the suit though, and would cut a ho to get one.

  • kimmeister

Out.  She looks like she’s hawking the Color Me Beautiful system from the 80’s.

  • DylanCurtis

  • The neckline of the jacket falls awkwardly across her bust.  It looks like she’s bursting out of the jacket.  And this is the wrong pink for her.  Too much of a blue undertone, which fights with her skin tone.  Make up and hair are flawless.

  • StellaZafella

    out…not ‘OUT’, just out.

Willam would kill this “slapped pink” intern’s suit without the bow at the neck…and in better shoes!

  • Rand Ortega

    It’s all so…average.

  • PinkLemon

UNBUTTON THAT BUTTON. it’s making her shape weird. OUT.

  • Trisha26

Out. Different blouse and shoes desperately needed.

  • SapphoPoet

OUT. She reminds me of Nicole Kidman in that movie about the news broadcaster; can’t remember the name but Nicole’s character always wore bright, sunny clothing like this.

  • You were being kind.  If she had to wear a pepto bismol-colored suit, at least wear it with a black turtleneck, not a blouse like the one Nathan Lane wore in “The Birdcage.”  The outfit makes her look wide.

  • MissFern

out.  sexier cami underneath and i could be ok with it.  but that bow is killing me.

  • theblondette

Oh no, honey. This is a cartoon suit, and for it to work it has to be playful and sexy, not Barbie. In the 80s I had a Secretary Barbie who looked a lot like this.

  • out. the bow really kills it.

  • IN for the Working Girl reboot with Halle Berry in the Sigourney Weaver role. For anything else, no.

  • She looks great, if she was going to a PTA meeting. Still, I like it too much to say Out. It’s not offensive. Which I guess all by itself makes it an OUT.

  • Janet B

The blouse and shoes aren’t sexy enough.

  • Judy_J

I can’t put my finger on it, but the proportions seem to be off in the outfit as worn by Ms Rivera.  The skirt seems too boxy, the shoulders too big….it’s just not working for me.  OUT.

  • mjude

OUT.  do not like the shoes

  • kikisayshi

I really wanted to love this – I mean that pink and those shoes on that girl, what’s not to love? But I agree that she really needed to sex it up a lot more. Hate the pussybow and the hair & makeup are dull. OUT

  • No, no, out.  That pank is blinding.

  • sweetlilvoice

You two are never too bitchy! We BK love that about you. As for Naya, I vote out. The blouse and shoes have done her in. Suit is beautiful color and length though.

  • I don’t hate the pink suit or the accessories, but that pussy-bow shirt is totally ruining the look. OUT!

  • She just left an Alpha Kappa Alpha meeting

    • formerlyAnon

  • MilaXX

Unless she’s pledging to join  AKA OUT!

  • mountainFashionista

Out.  But she looks a helluva lot better than the model, who to my eyes looks both slutty and poorly accessorized.

  • Call me Bee

Considering the event, anything sexier would have been tacky, even the way the model is presented. This is appropriate and cute! IN!

  • Oooh, so close, but no. The styling is bad and that pink is doing terrible things to her skin. OUT.

  • Jangle57

Flashback to Miami Vice Days – where are Sonny and Crockett?  It could have been so much more cause the color is terrific on her.  Hate the blouse, hate the shoes, hate the clutch.  OUT

  • Beardslee

OUT.  Sloppy blouse and the color of the shoes is too much of a muchness and the white clutch baffles me.

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  That blouse is just sad.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. This is a case in which she should have copied or closely mirrored the model’s styling.

  • karena10

The more I look at it, the less I like it.  I was going to say “well, its okay, not fantastic and not horrible, just barely in”, but the fit looks worse and so does the clutch, the more I look at it.  The first picture shows the bad fit the most.  I think I’ll stay with ‘just barely in’.

  • This isn’t “sexy secretary,” it’s just “80’s secretary.” HAAAATE that pink, and the shoes do nothing to help (though I love them, and I think they would be a great addition to my wardrobe). The suit does look better on the model, though I can’t imagine it working on anyone in real life save perhaps Zoe Saldana.

  • Actually, you’re right. The model slays in her outfit.

    Naya is an OUT.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Sorry, but i loathe everything about this look…that’s all

  • TSkot

Co-workers afternoon wedding, where she thought she should play it safe.  OUT

  • tereliz

Love this suit. Just not the way Naya has styled it. She looks a little too professional and buttoned up, and the structured fabric is serving to make her look more conservative, despite the fun color and the wacko shoe choice. It needs some glam, some sex, to keep it from veering into Happy Hour Friday territory. Like, those were the fun shoes she keeps under her desk for when she goes out for drinks after work. Which would be fine, if she weren’t on a red carpet for a GALA. I tend to think the dress code for such an event should be a bit dressier.

So OUT. For drinks. After work. 😉

    • She wasn’t on the red carpet for a GALA. She was on the red carpet before an event where the celebs were acting children’s scripts on a stage. Everyone else (male & female) involved was wearing pants so that they could move around on the stage easily – except her, she spent pretty much the entire event seated & with her thighs squished together trying not to flash anyone. And then she high tailed it out of there as fast as she could.

      • formerlyAnon

         Interesting. Thanks for the report!

      • tereliz

Ah. So she subjected children to this outfit? 😉

  • AlinaValero

out. for all the real estate on acid and other reasons you mentioned. she looks like a stepford wife who went out and got a part time job.

  • mznormann

Out, out, out! I’m not sure it can really be fixed. Just bad all around.

  • Scarlet39

The jacket looks about 2 sizes too small for her and I hate those shoes

  • The pink just glows, doesn’t it?  Reminds me somehow of a witch or wizard trying to dress muggle, and missing the mark.  Here we the celebrity trying to dress hoi polloi, except she really doesn’t understand that secretarial worker bees don’t usually wear $1000 suits to the office.

  • Out, the blouse is hideous & the jacket simply doesn’t fit properly. Worse, it was completely inappropriate for the event – the skirt was so short that she spent the entire time she was on stage trying to make sure she didn’t flash the audience (& failed, btw).

  • kittenwithaquip

Funny, before I read your commentary I was thinking “Mary Kay saleswoman on acid.” I think I just have a severe aversion to pink, especially bright pink. I give her snaps for throwing those shoes in the mix, but subtract snaps for the white purse, and that lipstick. And the pussy bow white shirt. Oh, and the hot pink suit…and the shoes. Fuck it. She’s in negative snap territory and gets an OUT.

    • Seriously, ITA she looks like she wandered in from a Mary Kay awards convention for the best sales reps.

  • kschwarting

Out, for exactly the reasons you stated.  Great color on her, but poor detailing.

  • Aly Light

    Don’t like. OUT.

  • Imasewsure

Qualified just-barely IN because the blouse is all wrong but I think the suit is pretty (or potentially pretty at least) on her… hate the shoes but still it’s the blouse that almost makes this an out

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  That pussy bow is sad and she’s wearing too much blush.  I really love the model’s styling–it makes that shocking pink work.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The model is styled better.  Perhaps if Naya had worn a little tank it would have been a bit sassier.  That blouse with the bow brings back bad memories of all the female attorneys I remember seeing during the 80’s.

  • Oof. Out!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

The shoes and makeup are giving me life, but the sad droopy blouse makes me want to end it. Not convinced that that skirt is the best length/shape for her figure. I wish it were slightly tapered in more of a pencil shape, the jacket were a smidge shorter, and the blouse were something sexy and fun. The white clutch was a terrible choice. She should lose it all together.

Seriously though, I might be willing to trade an organ for those shoes.

  • momogus

That color is AWESOME on her! Overall, I’ll give her an IN, though I hate the white clutch and the green shoes.

  • altalinda

Ok, I’ll be the outlier.  I say, In, for the event and plenty sexy enough.  The issue, to me, is that the front panels of the jacket appear to be tacked to the blouse, instead of hanging loosely, as on the model.  It makes her look odd, like the blouse and jacket aren’t fitted properly around her bustline.  Plus, I have an irrational dislike of white purses.

  • Sara__B

OUT. Pretty lady, styled all wrong.

  • ZnSD

I’m sorry, did I order some Mary Kay?

  • AmeliaEve

The color is what I love about this, very retro 80s. But the cut of the skirt doesn’t flatter Rivera or the model, and Rivera’s jacket breaks in an ugly way around the bust when it’s buttoned. The blouse is neither here nor there. It would be fine with plain shell, but otherwise it should be all-out ruffles and frills to contrast the geometrically cut suit.

  • jw_ny

    ouch, my eyes….

  • lesmaha

  • stagmania

OUT. I think the droopy blouse is what kills it for me.

  • nannypoo

That is a seriously hideous color and it doesn’t fit. She looks awful.

  • yybb

It looks like she realized how bad the shirt was and buttoned the jacket.
Really like how the model is styled.

  • bitterk

Out.  This is all wrong for many reasons but the blouse in particular kills it.  A different top under the suit, strappy sandals and handbag and this might work.  As is, I’m perplexed.

  • IN. Chill, dudes 🙂

  • elizonthelam

Unbutton the jacket and go for a simpler top and this could have been great. Love the colors; hate the details. Out.

  • unbornfawn

OUT. Lost it on styling. A great suit that she messed up.

  • Pterodactyl111

  • formerlyAnon

That pink plus teal and white does read Legally Blonde, to me. It’s thisclose to the Lilly Pulitzer Sorority palette, which I am biased against. But not nearly so biased as I am against the pussy bow.

But the Real Sin here is that it’s making her look entirely rectangular, without bestowing any cool, hip reason for rectangularity. It just looks like an unflatteringly fitted suit.

  • demidaemon

I’m thinking 80s movie stewardess, and not in a good way. OUT.

  • nankipoo

I like it. And I like the way she hasn’t over accessorised the deal.

  • CatherineRhodes

IN. It’s the Young Storytellers Convention, most likely a daytime event. A sexy plunging neckline and dominitrix shoes wouldn’t have been too much.

    • Its an evening charity event encouraging children to write. As in the Young Storytellers. Where all the other celebs were wearing casual clothes (jeans & khakis) because they were going to be mucking around on a stage for a couple of hours. I was there – she looked completely ridiculous next to everyone else.

  • understateddiva

Out.  The make-up is so dated.

  • forward_slash_PRS

Whenever I hear a look described as “sexy secretary” I hope it will look really, really great because I’m a secretary, and in a totally modest way I think I’m sexy . . . but this? OUT, mostly because of the blouse.

  • another_laura

Real estate on acid, it is.

  • guest2visits

She’s really beautiful but the suit needed a serious black shoe, not another carnival color. The clutch would also need to be
something black or tan or like a snake skin or ostrich.

  • butter nut

this is totally an out, but i’ll give her an IN just cause she’s clearly trying.  E for Effort!

  • Tootsie called, Dustin Hoffman wants his costume back. OUT.

  • Joey Melliza

Out –  that i’m barney’s publicist isn’t just working for me

  • lrhg

Out. Like the idea but desperately needs her hair up and a kick-ass pair of shoes. Think black and lots of straps. Or possibly spikes.

  • DinahR

IN!   I love this look.  The only thing I’d change would be the blouse.  I’d stay white but loose the bow.

  • Out. Out. Out.  OMG – kindergarten teacher/hooker.  Hello?!  Not a good look.

  • BuffaloBarbara

    Pussy bow=automatic out.

The colors aren’t great, either, but I don’t mind them.  Large loopy bow ties, on the other hand, come straight from  hell and need to be sent back posthaste.

  • SophieCollier

That is an eye-rending shade of pink, waaay too bright, but maybe that’s just the photos.  It does look a bit too buttoned-up and conservative, despite the color.  I agree the model was styled better.  I’m going to be a meanie and say “OUT” but only because the color hurts to look at.

  • trisker

laughed out loud at Real Estate Agent on Acid!  Definitely out.  Too bad, because she can really wear clothes.

  • RzYoung

Yep, the ingredients are there but the styling is hiddy

  • glennethph

  • Paris Hilton goes like, prafesha-null you guuuuuuys.  Thass hot.

  • OUT. That suit jacket definitely looks better unbuttoned.

  • MzzPants

     That blouse kills it.  Out.

  • Your critique is spot on. The minute I saw the pussy bow I screamed ‘noooooo!!!’  It’s just too much. Sandals were needed. blah, blah…what you guys said. I hate to do it because the color is great on her but OUT.

  • If she would have worn it similarly to the model, then yes. I like the shoes, but that shirt ruined it.

  • teensmom99

    OUT. That is all.

  • MarissaLG

    Out. Neon Flight Attendant.

  • Susan Crawford

I love the suit, and in fact, I just ordered a very similar pink blazer! The color is super on her, but I have some issues with the styling. The blouse is definitely Real Estate. It’s that bow that does it. A simple deep v-neck blouse, or even a little silk cami would have been a better choice. I get why someone figured a pop-of-color shoe was needed, but this particular color is not working. I think I might have gone for a sandal, as DVF did. And the white clutch? No. Just too Early Bird Special Dinner. A neat little black and silver McQueen knuckle clutch would have made this much more red carpet. So, sadly, I must give this a small-case “out”.

    • AthenaJ

You hit the nail on the head with this one

  • Bailey Debruynkops

    its a nice suit, in

  • OUT. The suit looks cute on the model (though, GAWD, is that the brightest bright pink you’ve ever seen), but Naya’s choice of blouse and shoes takes it to some ridiculous place, a place located firmly in the ’80’s. My mom had a closet full of those bow blouses. She wore one almost every day to work. She also had a copy of “Dress for Success” in her room. I distinctly remember the lady on the book’s cover wearing a suit with shoulder pads and a bow blouse. Some looks should die forever.

  • littlemac8

OUT!  My eyes…that searing color!  Really no one looks good in neon and that’s all!

  • OUT! On the model the styling for this was perfect. Totally modern. While I *love* the suit, it’s an out on Naya because of the blouse and the buttoned up front. She looks like a crazy flight attendant. It’s a shame because the suit has such potential.

  • Naya could have used an up-do, but otherwise looks super sexy to me. IN! Model looks trampy.

  • Jennifer Coleman

I suspect there is a reason the model was styled with the jacket open. It is not designed for boobs, even small ones. That pussy bow blouse was a catastrophic choice. Model looks much better. Out.

  • AthenaJ

I can’t help it – I know this shade of pink is totally barbie, but the girly-girl in me is squealing in delight over it.

  • KathKo

    I like it : IN !

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I hate the way the blazer is (NOT) fitting over her breasts.  The pussy bow is just gross, and those shoes are totally attention grabbing when the suit should be the focus.  I love me some Naya, but this is an OUT.

  • vinrouge15

OUT. The white bloue under it makes it look like something for the office.

  • chitowndg

Out.  The jacket should remain unbuttoned.

  • Cz

Man, those Jimmy Choo box clutches are everywhere.

OUT. That pink is ugh.  It just looks like Career Barbie made a wrong turn and ended up at a red carpet without her Red Carpet Barbie outfit in the trunk of her pink convertible.

  • “Dress for Success”…out.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I don’t hate the suit, but it doesn’t fit well. The jacket looks too big and it blends in with the skirt, giving her a blocky shape. And I haaaaate the blouse with the bow. She’s OUT for me.

  • OUT! it just isn’t working.

  • DCSheehan

In. That colour with her skin tone = wow.

  • librarygrrl64

OUT. I can’t with these colors. Waiting patiently for this trend to pass by…again…

  • PeaceBang

  • ccm800

man. I gotta call OUT which pains me because I love this kid. I think any stylist who can go wrong with this kind of stuff to work from should be run out of town on a rail.
