Helena Bonham Carter in Vivienne Westwood (X2)

Posted on October 22, 2012

Because we feel like starting our work week off with someone who knows how to have fun with her elegance.

Helena Bonham Carter attends the Closing Film Premiere for ‘Great Expectations’ during the 56th BFI London Film Festival in Vivienne Westwood.

Gorgeous. Simple, but with just a hint of the goth-princess vibe to it, which suits her to a T, of course.

And because she not only knows how to have fun with her elegance, she knows a good dress when she sees one and holds on to it:

Helena Bonham Carter attends the BFI London Film Festival Awards during the 56th London Film Festival in Vivienne Westwood.

We’ve seen her in this exact dress plenty of times before, but hey, when you find a dress that nips your waist and lifts up your tits, you buy that mother, and you WEAR it. Still don’t love the hem on it, but then, we generally don’t love what Westwood does with hems and skirt shapes.

We love her little quirk of carrying pocketbooks on the red carpet instead of the de rigeur and ever-present, clutch.

love the 1st dress, but her lady heads look pained. especially in the 2nd pic

    • mshesterp

Agreed–think it would be perfect if the bust/straps fitted just a little better–love the tissue-esque skirt.  But I love the look.  I’ve really grown into my love of HBC’s clothing choices!  She knows what works for her.

      • holdstillnow

The skirt is fantastic!  I just wish she had worn the straps like they were supposed to be, and not pushed out on her shoulders.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

The 3rd picture down…oof. I do not think boobs are supposed to do that.

But dayum, HBC, you are so lovely, I will give you a pass. How nice to start off the day with HBC.

      • Sobaika

Unfortunately my boobs do that ALLLLL the time.

        • lovelyivy

This too was my life at one point. The right bra maker can erase the pain of boob sausage!

    • Corsetmaker

I’ve come to the conclusion there are a lot of rather sensitively boobed ladies on this forum LOL! It’s the style of the bodice and it’s intentional. They won’t burst with a bit of a squeeze :D

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And DAMN but that shade of purple is her Bestie. I’m loving the gown as well. What a Glam Slam.

    • librarygrrl64

      It’s very Miss Havisham 2012, isn’t it? :-)

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

         Totally Dickensian.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m so looking forward to seeing HBC as Miss Havisham. And I love that gown she wore for the premiere.
The girls are definitely getting a lot of air in that second dress…but hey, it’s a classic HBC look, and I’m fine with that.

  • Sobaika

Fabulous as always, although her matchy makeup in the second dress is giving me twitches.

    • jonnyf8

Really?  I was just thinking about how much I loved the make-up.

      • Sobaika

Really. It’s really good on its own, but something about exact matching eyeshadow (especially in jewel tones) seems very wrong to me.

  • http://twitter.com/almcafee Alison McAfee

that first dress is the best thing I’ve ever seen her in. killin’ it.

however, the 90s mom hair will never not annoy me.

  • siriuslover

Looking good, Ms. HBC! I especially love the goth princess look in the first set of pics.

  • SewingSiren

Love the dresses , but a little too much push-up on both.
The at the second event it looks like she had a nip of gin before she took her stroll.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Yeah, she’s giving definite drunk face in the purple dress.

    • schadenfreudelicious

my thoughts exactly,  she looks like just just came back from a nip of gin and a cig round the corner…

    • random_poster

Nip of gin…I kind of love her for that.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Those are some seriously squeezed boobs, ouch.

That said, she does look pretty damn fabulous, which is de rigueur for HBC.

  • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

I don’t love HBC’s proclivity towards the black round-toed platform pump. But, she’s been knocking it out of the park lately with the hair and makeup – I especially love the hair in Look No. 2 – talk about serving up Joan Collins Realness! Love the dresses, too, but I am a Westwood superfan.

    • http://melaniesuzanne.blogspot.com/ Melanie Suzanne

Hahaha! My first thought on seeing her in the purple dress was “Omigawd, it’s Alexis Carrington minus shoulder pads!”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

Not that these looks don’t suit HBC (although the babyheads are making me squirm) but every time you boys post someone in something by Vivienne Westwood, I learn to hate her designs a little more each time.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, unfortunately Viv has gone the easy route, once her bustiers became popular with the stars back in the nineties. They were cutting edge then, not so much now. I will always adore her. She is very influential among many designers. Dolce & Gabanna are using the puttis(sp?) that she used liberally in the nineties. McQeen’s exaggerated silhouettes would not have existed without Westwood. I must stop now as so many current influences can be traced to her.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

The dress doesn’t nip her waist and lift her tits–that’s the corset she most likely wears with everything, as does Dita von Teese. Corsets can be our friend, ladies. Too bad more lady stars and celebrities don’t know this.

    • Corsetmaker

All those Westwood dresses are draped onto corsets. It’s built into the dress. As are most of the classic couture evening dresses. Which is why so many stars fail to achieve the same level of glamour and shape as their golden age predecessors.

  • Jessica Goldstein

The fit on the bust is the only thing that keeps the first look from being perfect.

    • Tatiana Luján

      and the shoes.

  • miagain

    I love the first dress.
I read somewhere that her early twenties were very hard, she nursed a sick parent for quite sometime.  She said she missed out on that period of her youth when she could wear crazy clothes… so she’s doing it now!  I hope it’s a true story!

  • Jenna621

She looks like she really, really needs to pee in the second set of photos.

    • Lori

I totally understand. Alcohol goes right through me too and it really does look like she had more than a little nip before that pic was taken.

    • CurbGirl

ah, see, I thought the hem indicated that she had already been to the loo and had tucked the skirt into her, um, undies?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

It’s Vivienne Westwood. That is all.

  • DinahR

I love her style.   I find it endearing she is almost always wearing the same shoes, ones that I imagine she owns.  It makes her seem more down to earth and confirms that she really does not take herself too seriously.

    • Qitkat

and Attitude: dammit, these are my most comfortable, best-fitting, go-to heels and I WILL wear them, no matter what tlo and the fug girls say.

  • jilly_d

#1= personal best. Still HBC, but SOPHISTICATED! Lurv.

  • nannypoo

That first dress is really beautiful. We seldom see her in something other people would wear, and I just love it on her. In the second one she looks like a cheap hooker.

  • mjude

    LOVE

  • VicksieDo

    I’m loving her hair lately~!

  • crash1212

Love her. That first dress is a wonder and she’s superb in it.

  • SapphoPoet

HBC is my red carpet role model.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Oh, I love the pocketbook quirk, too–I wish it would catch on.  I’m totally paranoid about clutches.  Besides, with a handled purse, you can push it over your wrist while signing autographs or picking up your goodie bags.

I’m not sure I love the first dress as much as you guys do (something about the underskirt), but it’s HBC; she has a whole different universe of clothing.

  • PinkLemon

always looking a bit disheveled. but i suppose she owns it.

  • imperfectlaura

For some reason the face she’s giving in the second look reminds me of Salma Hayek.

Love the first look. Suits her perfectly.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

She’s torturing the babyheads, but she still looks fabulous. I love everything about her!

  • mmc2315

    I love her style.  It’s so….her!

I also like that she is not afraid to wear the same thing twice (or more).

    She makes me smile.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/F4H4ZBPJLBRNQKOGM7OUZSFSPY queencee

I want to get drunk with her.

  • EEKstl

    She’s so fab.

  • schadenfreudelicious

it’s HBC so she really can do no wrong, but i would have liked to have seen a pair of sheer black hose perhaps with the second dress?…

  • http://annequichante.wordpress.com/ Anne

She looks so dainty in that third picture, I love it!  And I like that she’s carrying a bag that you could actually put something in.  Good for you, HBC.

  • librarygrrl64

Love her, but that first look is doing her top half no favors.

  • Judy_J

Love the goth-princess dress!  Not so thrilled about the purple dress.  I really don’t like that hem.  Looks like she got it caught in her undies after a trip to the loo.

  • Tatiana Luján

The second look is a mess. Her makeup is all wrong for her coloring, she looks sick. The shoes are nothing and, as Judy_J said, the hem of the dress ooks like she got it caught in her undies after a trip to the loo.
And I see baby heads in all of the pictures. She is the best, but she can do wrong.

  • B_C_J

The first dress is very beautiful and she wears it well. However, I am not crazy about the hair. It’s giving off a slight prom vibe.  The violet dress is amazing and she looks dazzling in it. Moreover, the hair looks incredible – a little hint of messiness combined with sexiness and yet superbly appropriate for a glamorous evening out. I also love the fact that she is wearing minimal jewelry.  When you are that beautiful and that confident, jewelry is not always necessary.

  • kschwarting

Wouldn’t you love to know what HBC carries in her bag to a premiere?  I don’t know why, but I’m thinking it would be interesting.

    • MoHub

I’d love to think there’s a big ol’ sandwich in that purse!

  • Anathema_Device

Love her and her style. A tad over the serving wench line in that first dress, but it is HBC. Who am I to nitpick?

    • kimmeister

Yes, those are very Ren-Faire shelf boobs in the first pic.

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

        Exactly.  Ren-faire boobs.

  • Call me Bee

Love that first dress–it is HER!
Scrolling down, though, gave me a start.  While the blue dress flatters the hell out of her figure, her crazy hair is a bit scary.  But then, when is HBC not scary, just a little?

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I love HBC and these are great looks – platonic ideals of the HBC look, almost. The makeup is very pretty in each one and suits her very well. I also hate that hem on the blue dress though – it looks like static cling after using the restroom, and just makes that shiny fabric look sloppier.

  • Judy_S

The first dress–it’s as if she made up a dress, Westwood saw it and copied it and finished it a bit more.
The second dress–she is the only person I can think of that I would not hate in that tit-pinching neckline.

  • MilaXX

Love the 1rst look, but the second one needs a hit with the steamer.

  • http://twitter.com/amandawelliver Amanda Welliver

Baby heads, gotta pee pose, and wrinkled satin that’s screaming for a steamer.  Gentleman, you have a giant-sized HBC blind spot.

  • jw_ny

oh…that second look! Great dress for sure, but she looks like she just spent the night passed out on the barroom floor.

The first gown is great.  The look overall is actually quite simple and elegant for her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

Whoever does her hair and makeup deserves a raise. She always looks so gorgeous, yet just the right amount of bedraggled–perfectly polished into that just-slightly-messy look she cultivates. It’s hard to explain, but it’s clearly a lot of effort to look so effortless.

  • greymain

    a true original…. luv huh!!!

  • m0r0

I LOVE HER! She always looks like a SPECTACULAR Train Wreck!

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

HBC’s make-up person is worth every penny she’s paying.  She always looks flawless.

  • pop_top

I love her in everything she wears because she wears it all so confidently. And her hair looks amazing cascading down in that 3rd pic.

  • oohsparkley!

I’m seeing some Elizabeth Taylor glamour. Except Liz would have had millions in diamonds dripping from her.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

I agree with you boys.  That purple dress is fab, but that hem makes my eye twitch.

  • Imasewsure

Love the second look – very Gina Lollobrigada on a bender… or at least on a walk of shame the morning after

  • Laylalola

A blowsy mess. And these are some of her better looks.

  • NCDFan

She’s a great actress who refuses to try to be something she’s not. HBC is just plain cool.

  • MoHub

HBC—never, ever change your crazy self, but please be kinder to your upper frontals!

  • Cathy S

If not for the baby heads, that first look would have been perfect. It’s still pretty close though.

  • quiltrx

LOVE the gown!  Looks a little tight in the bust, but it’s really a beautiful dress and fits her style to a T.  I love that she has such a distinctive style and owns it…right down to the Queen Betty-ish carrying of a REAL purse on the RC!

  • JauntyJohn

Oh my god I love the first picture in the Purple Dress series.  Terrific look for her, but the picture itself looks like she’s got a silver flask in that bag and is on her way to the car and a better party.

    • random_poster

Yes! She keeps a bag that large to carry her flask…of course!!!

  • Sarah Thomas

Again I say, and I will keep saying, that if Christina Hendricks showed up wearing this you’d nail her to the wall.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Well… yeah. Christina Hendricks is a different woman. That’s the cornerstone of our red carpet coverage: it all depends on the woman and the venue.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

I wish to god Christina Hendricks would give in to her teenaged self and just go overboard with her clothes.  Actually, I’d love to see her in that purple dress and that’s the first thing I thought when I saw it.  She desperately needs to find a way to put her personality into what she wears and most importantly, have that shit custom tailored or custom made.

    • Corsetmaker

Christina Hendricks has worn a Westwood dress in a similar shape, at least once or twice. It doesn’t suit her. That style of corsetry (based on pre-19th century stays) pushes the bust up the way. It boosts smallish busts and gives a wench-like effect on a moderate to generous bust like HBC’s but it’s not great on a very large bust as there’s nowhere for it to go but chinwards. Different shapes for different bodies, and different personalities too of course.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

When I saw the photos of her in the Westwood dress, my first thought was that SHE should have been cast as Elizabeth Taylor.  Can’t you see HBC in full blown “tantrum a la Liz” mode?  Can’t you picture her in a slip and a fur coat, as in “Butterfield 8″?  Can we remake the movie, please?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

This woman knows herself and she’s obviously very comfortable with who she is.  That’s the most attractive thing in the world to me.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

I think she actually does have to pee in that second set.

  • Trisha26

I love the black & white gown but I don’t understand why it has that belt/tie when there’s clearly some sort of gathering/corset situation going on. I like to think she carries a purse because that’s what royalty does…and she’s royalty to me.

  • j_anson

Meh, hate the purple. The first one I actually love; it’s her but it’s still beautiful. I get so sick of her “look, I’m a sexy witch” schtick.

  • http://twitter.com/Lady_ology Ladyology

I second hearting her for carrying an actual bag.  Those eensy clutches won’t even carry a phone, and it’s possible to pair a gown with an actual purse and still look glam.  Thanks Helena!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

She looks a bit strung out in the second one. Miss Honeychurch, what happened?

  • SpillinTea

In that second dress she is giving us Salma Hayek (pre-trophy wife days) and I, for one, and LIVING for it. WERK!

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

Love the first one! Didn’t Christina Hendricks wear a similar dress to Helena’s purple one sometime in the last year?

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

Oh lawd. I just love her so much.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14301272 Kate Gorton

Christina Hendricks should wear more Westwood.

Properly tailored Westwood, of course. Must wrangle les baby-heads.

  • Zippypie

    I adore her.  *BOWS*

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QK3MTAHUVJCMI7DANY6WFCAIUM n a

love that first dress on her-. don’t like the second- but the color is fantastic.  I DO so wish she would do something else with the hair…wishful thinking

  • snarkykitten

Not feeling the goth baby heads though

  • Susan Carley Oliver

First pic – what do you call it when the baby heads are also peeking out the side?

  • pulpytomato

    Love her.
I think her trick is the hair. Imagine if she had sleek hair in these pictures. She would look completely different.

  • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

This gal is so entertaining.  I may hate most of her recent movies, but she’s fun to watch as a regular celebrity human.  I love that she doesn’t take herself seriously, it’s good to have fun.

  • Corsetmaker

I love that she’s herself and always herself  - and that, going by the repeats, she wears her own clothes!

The first one –  I love the layered organza, but not too keen on the sash and how it’s placed. It might be that the dark background isn’t helping. It’s Westwood’s usual 17th century-ish shaping, which suits HBC well. The bodice isn’t tight, it’s supposed to push the boobs upwards. It’s perfectly comfortable, nothing is going to burst or explode nor will it be painful! Also, her inner corsets use powernet etc so they aren’t even that rigid.

The second one – see, I like her draping and her assymetric hems. Again, built on the same corset shape, this is a classic dress of VW’s that we’ve seen in a lot of incarnations. HBC is near the top end of the scale of bust size that it works well on. I love when she does this slightly floozy-ish look. Like that favourite glam, rather inappropriate auntie that liked a gin and a dirty joke and had everyone tutting.

  • Susan Crawford

HBC and Westwood – was there ever a better match-up?

  • Beardslee

HBC knows how to choose among the dresses thrust at her to find the ones that express who she is.  She leads with her personality, not her dress, and that to me makes all the difference.
I love her little pocketbooks!  I don’t understand the infatuation with clutches.

  • Presumptuous Insect

When I saw that little thing in Room with a View, I never in a million years imagined she would turn out like this. Hot damn.

  • bitterk

    I love this kooky bitch

  • guest2visits

Both dresses are cute and expressive, and look made for her.
