Helena Bonham Carter in Marc Jacobs

Posted on October 11, 2012

We love you, Helena Bonham Carter.

Helena Bonham Carter attends the premiere of ‘Frankenweenie 3D’ during the 56th BFI London Film Festival in a Marc Jacobs dress paired with a Lulu Guinness bag.

Marc Jacobs Resort 2011 Collection/Model: Jamie Bochert

Lulu Guinness ‘Glamour Girl’ Bag

People say to us, “T Lo,” they say, “Why do you attack my favorite star for dressing like a crackhead but you praise Helena Bonham Carter?” This is usually asked of us when we rail against Johnny Depp for looking like an elderly gay wind chime. THIS. This is why we praise HBC. Because she sticks to her steampunk aesthetic, remaining true to herself, but she wears high-end fashion that suits her really well and manages to pair it with fun or interesting items. She PUTS THE EFFORT IN. Her hair is done, her makeup looks great, she’s wearing Marc Jacobs and she’s sporting a kickass pair of shoes and a really fun purse. She’s every inch Helena Bonham Carter from head to toe, but she’s totally red-carpet-ready. It’s not at all an easy thing to be red carpet-appropriate and still stay true to your own quirky style. That she manages to do it over and over again is a testament to her sense of style and her dressing skills. Johnny Depp (and others of his ilk) hit the red carpet looking no different than they do when they’re out running errands.

    • MoHub

G-d bless you, HBC! Never, ever change.

    • Jessi03

      Oh, HBC.  Never change.

    • VicksieDo

Wow, she looks FANTASTIC!  Love her hair (wants her hair).

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Oh, me too! I’ve had a crush on her hair since I first saw her in Lady Jane, lo, these many moons ago. Alas, my hair is just sort of…straight & fuzzy.

        • julnyes

Yes, loved her hair since Room With A View (a movie with lots of great hair .. and a nude Rupert Graves!)

It actually saddened me when she cut it many years ago.

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

I’m not a fan of hers, but she ROCKS the fashion.

    • Rin

Wow, she looks effortlessly chic in that outfit. The model kinda freaks me out though.

    • mjude

      LOVE HER!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

HBC in Charge.  Love that purse!

      • Karen Maslowski

But then he might have to wash if he wore one.

Oops, did I type that out loud?

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks like the best version of herself here, that dress really suits her proportions. Love her hair (wish I had the dainty face to pull it off like she does). The purse and makeup are perfection, though I must admit that I am not crazy about the shoes. Tim Burton is so lucky to have found one of his characters to marry in real life.

      • AthenaJ

‘Tim Burton is so lucky to have found one of his characters to marry in real life.’

        Perfectly stated!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

I have her hair, and not a dainty face, and I look fabulous, trust. Go for it.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I love this woman, not only for her acting skills, which are considerable, but also for the fact that she resolutely refuses to make herself over into a cardboard cutout star. Go ON with your badass self, HBC!

    • Zaftiguana

The key is that this bitch is always put together. Everything is “done” and intentional. I think she looks fabulous. And, you know what? She looks like she showered. The recent glut of “edgy” male celebrities who show up on a red carpet looking like they haven’t so much as run some hot water over themselves in the last 72 hours makes me feel stabby.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

         Amen Sister!

      • aristida_girl

I think I will find a way to inject “feeling stabby” into my conversations today, good one! I also agree with your sentiment about the dirty boys and girls, what’s wrong with fresh and clean? dirty does not = edgy…

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

      “elderly gay wind chime”
      Kudos for that.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

You know, I love TLo even more for “elderly gay wind chime”!

      • FashionShowAtLunch

Seriously.  That is a particularly delightful turn of phrase.

    • RzYoung

Well said/justified TLO, I’m with you, I love her style, it’s consistent and she’s won us all over.

    • call_me_schmeg

i feel like HBC can fix my watch, tell my fortune and spit-wipe schmutz off my face, all at the same time. and by that, i mean she is AWESOME.

    • Patricia Gillett

If I had stumbled across the pic of the  dress on the model in a magazine I would have said: “Helena Bonham Carter, that IS your dress. Go get it!”  Not my style but most definitely hers.

    • curiouserandcuriousest

She really does look great. Her hair and make-up in particular, but I agree, her whole aesthetic seems genuine in some way.

    • ballerinawithagun

      My idol!

    • Anathema_Device

I love that she has fun with fashion but doesn’t look jokey. Love this look on her. And is getting MORE beautiful as she ages? WTF?

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I suspect a painting is hiding in her attic,….

        • jonnyf8

Just one helluva make-up artist.  As amazing as the clothes are the face is really what is blowing me away here.

          • FashionShowAtLunch

She looks gorge. And if she’s had work done, it’s really really good work.

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I thought so too!  She is just absolutely stunning in this group of photos.  Hair, makeup, everything works.  One of my faves.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      I adore her.

    • StelledelMare

I just love her so much.

    • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

Hair and makeup look the best I’ve seen in a while here (just adore the curls, from one curly girl to another) and the bag is beyond perfect. A home run for HRH HBC.

    • alice20c

To be fair, I think Johnny Depp would love being compared to an elderly gay wind chime. I can even see it being one of his future characters.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

You could be right about that. Johnny does enjoy going for the eccentric.

    • http://magnetgirl.tumblr.com Anika

I agree completely. Also, I wants that bag OMG!!!!

    • dress_up_doll

I love this look. Well, everything but the purse. I know it’s LG, but I feel it trivializes the look. Kind of takes it from upscale to, um, less upscale? But, I also have a personal bias against fashion with messages written on it. Still, I love her dearly.

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

It looks like an Ed Hardy bag. Ed Hardy always = douchebag for me. The rest of the outfit kicks ass for her, though.

    • http://twitter.com/NJPaganelli NJPaganelli

HBC’s initials are very close to HBIC: Head Bitch In Charge. Fabulous.

      • H3ff

The ‘i’ wouldn’t necessarily be a capital in that context, so HBC is correct.

    • Le_Sigh

Love her to bits that one.

Also – “elderly gay windchime” made me snerk out loud.

    • http://sharpandkeen.wordpress.com/ Katie

      HBC 4eva!!!

    • schadenfreudelicious

great dress for HBC, she looks much better than the model who appears mere moments away from eating someone’s brains….

    • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

The phrase “elderly gay wind chime” would not have entered into my subconscious for at least another 15 years (or possibly never).  Thanks for that laugh today!!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I thought for a moment the boom mic was part of her hat and it STILL MADE SENSE. Her makeup is looking awesome/she is looking very well rested.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002396153672 Ann Martina

Every since “A Room With a View” I have wanted hair like hers

    • formerlyAnon

She’s good at this. I can’t achieve more than a tepid like for any item she’s wearing or carrying and yet the end result is fantastic.

Also, unlike many, many, MANY female celebs, she’s getting good value from her hair stylist(s), no matter how pricey.  Maybe she should offer her less fortunate sisters clinics in choosing and working with a hairdresser.

    • Pants_are_a_must

How does someone even DARE question HBC’s style? Don’t you realize this lady has been dressing this way for almost two decades now and since it obviously makes her happy, she werqs it? It takes a world-class level of fierceness to make this look natural, AND SHE DOES.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

When I come back in another life, I want to be HBC.

    • MilaXX

I couldn’t agree more. If you watch closely her makeup is never cracktastatic. It is always well done. She knows when to keep it natural and when to pull out the red lip. LOVE Huh

    • aristida_girl

      Luv huh…
in the 90’s, she was an inspiration to me, that one doesn’t always have to dress “normal” to look good, now I just love her for being her… And this is one of her best looks yet…you go girl…

    • SapphoPoet

    • newleaf1

So, a question….I’ve never heard of Lulu Guiness, but this looks very much like Betsey Johnson.  So who came first, Lulu or Betsey?

      Also…love HBC’s whackadoodle hair.

      • Lilithcat

Betsey.  Betsey’s been in the fashion industry longer than Lulu’s been alive.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Has Lulu Guinness been doing handbags for longer though?

          • Corsetmaker

Yup, Guinness has always been accessories (since late 80s) whereas I think Johnson went into them later on. Lulu Guinness even has a bag in the V&A.

            • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

It’s the bucket of flowers one, isn’t it? I love that bag.

    • Janet B

Absolutely gorgeous dress and HBC wears it well.  Her hair and makeup are perfect.

    • Coleen Dyer Wybranski

I *knew* I saw this dress on her before. She wore it to the 2011 SAG Awards! Double snaps for recycling and still managing to look so fresh and fierce.

    • Brigitte Todd

She looks amazing. She always looks amazing. And she’s just so stunningly beautiful.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Never change, Belletrix, aka HBC, never change.
P.S. Love the purse-the perfect kick-ass fun accessory.

    • nannypoo

She looks fabulous. I like her style, and it is definitely her style. Anyone else would look like they tried too hard. But don’t you wonder what she wears when she has to run down to the convenience store for a soda or a bag of chips? Or, more likely, an espresso and a cream puff?

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I ran into her on Hampstead High St once a few years ago and she looked like the street version of this. I seem to remember layers, cardigans and boots.

        • kschwarting

Now that would be a fun celebrity sighting!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love HBC and every inch of her wack-a-doo look! I doubt that I’d call her hair “done,” since it always looks like a bird’s next, but it’s still part of her look, and I love her for it!

    • Beardslee

You hit the nail on the head.  She is consistent and canny and true to herself.

    • B_C_J

Amazing bone structure, amazing beauty and an amazing ability to maintain and project her identity -feminine, odd, confident – no matter what she wears.  She wears it ten times better than the model.

    • 3boysful

I’m going to have to fly solo here and say that bag is the epitome of tacky.

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I’ll sign on as your co-pilot on that one

      • formerlyAnon

My bar for tacky is much higher than that, given the bad Versace burlesque costumes, stripper shoes, and ugly, over-embellished accoutrements seen regularly on the red carpet.

But it’s my least favorite item on her body and I personally don’t like it. BUT in context of her fashion bailiwick, it’s within bounds and in context of this ensemble I think it works. Works quite well.

    • Shawn Hill

Her makeup looks great. She doesn’t really need the jacket. Maybe it was cold?

      • formerlyAnon

I bet it was. If the contrast on your monitor lets you see them, some of the other people in the background are wearing coats.  And since this is London, not L.A., that probably means it’s a bit nippy.

    • jilly_d

You kind of forget, because she dresses so crazy, but she really is devastatingly beautiful.  No one has a face like hers.

    • ellabob

      I love her….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14301272 Kate Gorton

I just CACKLED at “elderly gay windchime.” At my desk. At work.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I second that. it got me too.

    • kschwarting

I’m not sure I love that dress on her–it seems to stumpify, though it’s a super-cute dress–but her face looks fabulous!  I always love seeing photos of her.

    • siriuslover

LOVE HER! Love her quirky high-end style, too.

    • mhleta

You know, TLo could have easily crapped all over this look and many would have found reasons to agree. I love that they have the wisdom to consider not only the clothes but the person wearing them and their thought process.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

That is definitely an HBC dress.  I adore her.

    • gabbilevy

If only every celebrity embraced their own wackadoodle-ness like she does.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

That woman is giving me bone structure envy. She’s just so gorgeous. I love that she didn’t go the whole Merchant/Ivory route with her clothing, which she so easily could have (and it would have suited her just as well).

*sigh* My first girl crush (that list is kind of long). I just love her.

      • formerlyAnon

Yeah. Nothing trumps bone structure, in the end. When you’re young you can be beautiful without it, but it’s still the real secret to looking good in old age.

    • BrooklynBomber

    • PastryGoddess

      Can I just say.

      THAT FACE!

    • ChaquitaPhilly

      Totally agree! Thanks, Guys.

    • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like that bolero jacket at all.

      • formerlyAnon

         Me neither.

BUT for me, the genius is that I love the ensemble.  That’s the kind of thing I can’t do myself and would love to be able to pay a stylist to do for me.

        • Tatiana Luján

I don’t love the ensemble because the jacket makes her look  hunchbacked. But the mix of the jacket with the dress does reflect her personal style.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AYQCICXEN2CCDBFV5HED4Z2RUA Dee B

that model looks like Dr. Frank-N-Furter

    • crash1212

Fabulous. All of it. Love her, love her style.

    • SewingSiren

I love all things Frankenstein. And pretty much all things HBC too.

    • Rand Ortega

If Helen Mirren is Queen of Fuckingfantastica, HBC is Queen of Steampunklandia. I love her fashion sensibility of Victorian futurism, the humorous touches, the effortless thoughtfulness of her outfits. This is wonderful, head to toe.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Samuel-Hawk/522821430 Samuel Hawk

It’s the dress she wore to the 2011 SAG Awards.  Beautiful then, beautiful now.

    • StellaZafella

HBC is inspired…and inspiring. Others in this way can merely aspire.

I always look at her, even surrounded by the trappings of modern society and think…ahhh, Lautrec!

    • sashaychante

The jacket looks odd, at least in the photo, maybe better in person.  Dress is great.

      • Tatiana Luján

The jacket makes her look hunchbacked

    • Kate4queen

I’m a big Lulu Guinness purse fan. I have several tucked away in my closet!

    • twocee

Love her, so much.  And I swear, Marc Jacobs must’ve designed that dress with HBC in mind.  It is perfect for her.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

“Elderly gay wind chime” to describe Johnny Depp is going to go on my wall of great characterizations — right next to the piece by a blogger on one of my Asian Cinema boards who compared Donnie Yen to a crack squirrel.

HBC is far beyond critiques by us mere mortals, but I don’t love the shrug.  I suspect it was chilly in London, but the shrug throws the proportions off somehow.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

      Fabulous. Why not a  Werq?

    • melanie0866

      Totally agree.  Love her.

    • Dhammadina

    • EEKstl

      Luv. Huh.

    • joything

      I adore her. And I want the jacket-let shrug-thing.

    • Trisha26

      Love her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

you guys are SO RIGHT. Of course. Her skin looks in-credible in these photos. How old is this crazy lady now anyway???

      • patticake1601

Can you believe she’s 46 years old?  Wow!

    • aumerle9

She’s so committed that she makes even Marc Jacobs look like Vivienne Westwood!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

       Bowing down!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=630191954 Adina Miller Holmes

*sigh*  She is so beautiful and so delightfully wacky.  Love her.

    • Lisa Kramp

She’s 47, and still one of the most beautiful and talented actresses out there. I adore her.

    • Myra C

Amen, TLo.  Also, Bitch does not age.  Dammit.

    • Carla_Charlton

Except for the platform pumps, she looks great.  (By the way, if Julia Louis Dreyfus and Norah Jones had a baby, it would look like her.)

    • judybrowni

      really — a long-sleeved shirt with a ball gown

      who does that

    • l_c_ann

I can’t remember her ever looking better (even when younger).

Is the black and white a subtle homage to the cartoon?

    • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

    • alyce1213

Gahd, I love her.  I never tire of her, as an actress and as a fashionable celebrity.

    • Peri7473

that third from the top picture – they should really have her and Julia Louis-Dreyfus play sisters!!!

    • lizlemonglasses

Tiny, dotty little Steampunk China Doll. Adorable.

    • Melissa Kramer

I love Johnny Depp, I do, but ‘elderly gay wind chime’ was laugh out loud hilarious and spot on. HBC always gets my vote. She’s a little bit crazy in a totally endearing way and I do like looking at what she is wearing.

    • LittleKarnak

She is fantastic…..can’t wait to see her as Mme Thenardier in Les Miz!!!

    • tinyredlocks

I love this woman. She simply does not age.

    • Zippypie

LOVE her!  And what a terrific HBC bag.  Her sense of humor and not taking herself so seriously is what allows her to pull off her personal style so perfectly.

    • guest2visits

I think it’s a beautiful dress on Helena; she looks good – the proportions are perfect.

    • AnneElliot

I love her too.  Her skin is absolutely luminous.  If she’s had work done, it’s fantastic.

    • Sweetvegan

I love how even the model was styled to look crazy in that dress! But this dress could go totally the other way – sweet and prim – on someone like Kristen Davis.

    • quiltrx

J’adore HBC!!!  She looks great, really beautiful.  And always has a cute purse to boot.

    • Susan Crawford

HBC is unique, brave, funny, chic in a weirdly twisted way, and a true style icon, INHO. She knows what she likes – and what likes her in fashion terms – and winks at the uber-seriousness of it all. Such a cheeky little fashion monkey! Love. Her.

    • http://raistlinsama.livejournal.com/ Raistlinsama

Bless her! What I like about HBC is that she has a very personal style, as opposed as many other stars that, despite dressing well, tend to look all the same. Se puts effort and creativity in it. The results may not always be successful, but she stays true to herself.
And I like to see someone that lies to bring the “crazy” to the red carpet!

    • Candigirl1968

      Her makeup is flawless.  Snaps!

    • cocohall

I too thought I had seen her with that bag before.  Which I LOVE about her.  Why shouldn’t she wear things she loves more than once?  Better to repeat items that make sense with your clothes and your style than to always embrace the new (whatever your stylist has decided is “right” for  you) and be a fashion victim.  You go get ‘em, HBC!

    • librarygrrl64

      She looks GORGEOUS!

    • amaranth16

Wow, this is almost tame for her. She looks lovely.
