Emma Roberts in Nanette Lepore

Posted on October 19, 2012

The unveiling of the new pair of sunglasses inspired by and named after you is the one and only time wearing sunglasses on the red carpet doesn’t get you called “full of yourself.”

Emma Roberts attends the Vogue Eyewear and CFDA unveiling of the ‘Emma’ sunglass in NYC in Nanette Lepore.

Nanette Lepore ‘Emma’ Sunglass

But what we really wanted to do was talk about her ladypants. Or more specifically her ladysuit. Not to sound like a broken record, but we’re really stoked that ladystars have fully embraced the pant lately for their red carpet appearances. And in Emma’s case, we’re glad to see she hasn’t defaulted to simple black pants, like so many of her cohorts lately. Personally, we kind of love this look. It’s not for everybody, but something about it suits her nicely. We like the sleek hair, bright clutch and simple shoes, because trying to get cute with the styling would have overwhelmed the look. And this is one of the few times lately where we’re gonna praise a lady for NOT wearing much in the way of jewelry. Committing to a head-to-toe print like that means you need to keep everything else as simple as possible. And considering how much we’ve disliked the majority of her red carpet choices, we think the thinking here represents a major style step-forward for her.

No, really.

What a shame they don’t really suit her at all.

      • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Wednesday Addams

That’s what I was thinking. Shouldn’t the sunglasses named for you actually fit your face?

      • RebeccaKW

I LOVE those sunglasses, but agree they are not right for her face shape.

        She looks great, though, clothing-wise.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          The outfit is terrific, actually.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Oh, I dunno — I think they suit her.  That is, I think the shape works with the shapes of her face.  Or maybe I just think they suit me.  I don’t think she’s really making them work — she seems a little overwhelmed by them.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Its the size of them that’s killing it for me. The shape is fine, they’re just too big for her face.

          • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I’ll give you that.  They’re not too big for my face!  Just the thing for popping down to the A&P for some Virginia Slims, a bottle of rose wine and a week’s worth of Lean Cuisine.

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

              Would that be Matuse Rose’?
(I haven’t heard the A&P mentioned in ages!)

            • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

It’s like you can read my mind.

(My grandmother was always going down to the A&P.  We didn’t even have an A&P!  There was a time in my childhood when I thought it just meant “grocery store” as a generic, like the way she used “davenport” for the couch.)

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Its right up there with G C Murphy’s Co. for being a blast outta the past.

Our dime store was Kresge’s. Love this conversation, guys!

            • Kris Zwack

I was just thinking a few days ago, that mine is the last generation to have been inside a Woolworths…

            • decormaven

More like a bottle of Blue Nun.

            • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1594250515 Kim Brightman

I loved Woolworths….they had just about everything.

            • VictoriaDiNardo

yeah, where else could you buy a tropical fish, York Peppermint Patties, a dust pan and and eyeshadow, and get a milk shake and frankfurter at the same time.  And ours always had red candied apples right next to the cash register every autumn.  sigh.

            • littlemac8

Woolworth’s – where I got busted for shoplifting some costume jewelry!  I was  in the 5th grade and my best friend at the time urged me to pocket some stuff.  That was the first, last and only time.  Horrifying!

            • http://twitter.com/pointlesswords jayme

…unless you live in Australia, in which case, Woolworths isn’t going anywhere.

            • agent_86

              You beat me to it!

            • H3ff

My small Irish town has a “Wellworths”, a name to which it was forced to change after the UK Woolworths threatened legal action, over 20 years ago now.

          • MilaXX

This! The shape is great they are just too large for her.

      • schadenfreudelicious

way too large for her face, she looks like an alien bug (albeit a well dressed one :)

      • Le_Sigh

Did you pun on purpose?  Because if you did, its BRILLIANT :-)

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I can rarely resist one, so, yeah.

    • charlotte

Nancy Drew got her fierce on, bitches!

    • http://twitter.com/graykeller gray keller

      Love it!! kush

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

*thumbs up* for me.  She looks pretty darn good. Age appropriate.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I’d like it better with a simpler blouse.  But otherwise, it looks great.

    • jilly_d

Love the suit, love the shades, LOVE the bag. Love.

    • crash1212

Funny, I think the sunglasses named for her are too big for her little face…whatever. I totally love this outfit. Cutest she’s ever looked. And the pop of orange is perfection. Nicely done indeed.

    • MilaXX

I like everything except the sunglasses. This is darn near a WERQ for her.

    • amaranth16

Her posture in the first photo is very Julia-esque.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I really like her choice of shoe with that suit.  Not thrilled at the shape of the sunglasses…too X-Files alien-esque.

    • AmeliaEve

      I need those sunglasses.

    • alyce1213

The ladysuit is fine, but I HATE that blouse with it and the clutch should be something with a little more structure.
She might have worn a more substantial shoe instead of the pointy little black pumps.
Funny that the Emma glasses are really too big for her face and don’t suit her all that well.

      • ballerinawithagun

You are so right on all counts! That blouse is horrible with the suit. I thought to myself, “What did Miuccia (sp?) originally put with this?” I was shocked when I saw that it was a Nanette Lepore look alike without any edge!

    • Trisha26

The shape of the glasses doesn’t compliment the shape of her face.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LI35AZLWSZEYRDZ4PUCBHUCZUI Jonathan

The lack of a belt is kind of throwing me off, and I could do without the stripes (sheer panels?) in the blouse. but all in all its pretty great

    • Zippypie

Love the suit, hate the sunglasses and the shoes.  The glasses are wrong for her face.  The shoes are just wrong.

    • TieDye64

Wow, this is a personal best for her. By a mile. And while I love those shades (LOVE!) they aren’t the most flattering shape for her. Everything else is about as perfect as it gets. Not a sentence I thought I’d ever type with regards to Ms. Roberts. She needs to give her stylist a big, fat bonus.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I love it! It’s not often I say this, but I will take the head-to-toe look off of that celebrequin please. (Celebrequin = celebrity mannequin).

    • Onika K Morris-Alleyne

I feel like they keep trying to make her happen…

    • kimmeister

I wouldn’t have thought her famous enough to inspire her own sunglasses model.  [Shrugs]  I once had a vest and pants outfit in a very similar pattern and I loved the idea of it.  Sadly, the pants fit me terribly and I ditched them but hung onto the vest.  I should dig that out . . .

    • margaret meyers

Love everything but the sunglasses — they’re too big for her face.

    • Anathema_Device

Love this look. All of it.  Well done, Emma!

    • ChelseaNH

      Smashing suit, funny-looking shades.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

Egads, those sunglasses look like an even bigger version–which should never, ever happen–of the cat-eye monstrosities my mother made me wear in second grade. They don’t do a darn thing for Ms. Emma, sadly.

      That outfit: Ditto.

    • quiltrx

LOVE yer suit! (said in my best Hannibal Lecter voice)

It’s very Evan Rachel Woods-ish, which is definitely a compliment.

Is her hair short now or just pulled back?  Unless they look better with her hair down, the shades don’t exactly suit her.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Love it! A great execution of the ladysuit on the red carpet!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

I LOVE this look, especially with the glasses.  Fab.

    • tallgirl1204

I love this suit. Not oving the blouse with it– a little too much? This would have been a time for a simple tank. But oh, the suit. Fabulous.

    • nannypoo

If someone designed sunglasses and named them after me (the Nannypoo sunglasses) and they looked like this, I would feel sad. They really suck.

      • amf0001

I think the ‘nannypoo’ glasses sound wonderful!  I want to see what they look like…  (so much more than those sad Emma glasses, which did not work for me at all)

    • AzulFashion

She looks some much better WITHOUT the sunglasses. If she wanted to sell sunglasses, she definitely should not have taken them off.

    • Tamara Hogan

Love the suit, but I’m NOT a fan of the sunglasses.

    • AnneElliot

Not loving the sunglasses either, but the suit is growing on me.  And snaps up for me for the shoes!!  I’m beginning to believe platforms, peep-toes, and silly putty pumps are on their way OUT, thanks be to jeebus!

    • another_laura

I love the suit on her, and the glasses are fine. My one quibble is that ugly clutch. Brava, girl, you can do it if you try….

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Love the whole ensemble. The glasses definitley need a smile but aside from that I can’t complain. That suit is adorable!

    • formerlyAnon

I LOVE the suit, wonder if there weren’t a better blouse, am leaning against on the hair, and think the sunglasses (maybe combined with the slicked down hair?) aren’t doing her any favors.

Shoes are right, here, & nothing spectacularly good or bad about the clutch. I’d have liked a harder, more angular, clutch, possibly a deeper red & shiny but maybe that’s my sojourn through the ’80s rearing its ugly head.

    • Laylalola

I don’t know why she always looks so un-pulled together to me. Even here.

    • Pinup Ghoul

Celebrities sure do love to throw parties for themselves, don’t they?

    • Dhammadina

Cute cute cute cute cute cute cute!

    • In_Stitches

It’s a lovely suit.  I just wish she hadn’t pushed the sleeves up; leave that juvenile styling to the Jonases.

    • SapphoPoet

I’m not sold on the glasses, but the outfit looks cute.

    • librarygrrl64

This outfit is killer. Good for you, Emma!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PRM766RS56X25A5742XLACK2LM Sam

I know they’re actually named “Emma”, but I’m sure everyone will only remember them as the “Julia’s Niece”.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

love it!  i was ready to be bored, thinking it was gonna be another black suit.  what a pleasant surprise that print is.  i’d give it a WERQ!

    • ThaliaMenninger

Love it. From the eyeglasses on down, girl has got it going on.

    • Larkin21

Love the ladysuit. Don’t love the hair. Or sunglasses.
