ELLE’s 19th Annual Women In Hollywood – Part 3

Posted on October 16, 2012

One more time, ladies!

Anna Kendrick in Badgley Mischka

Enh. It’s okay. We’d like it more without the sheer panel and the Minnie Mouse shoes.

Busy Philipps in Dolce&Gabbana

There’s some sort of “busy” joke just waiting to be made, but we’re blinded by her matchy shoes.

Giada De Laurentiis

Did we ever mention how we can’t stand her? Especially when she’s talking all Valley Girl and then hits an Italian word and suddenly she’s Sophia Loren? We threw our remote at the TV one time when she pronounced “spaghetti” as “spagheeeeettiiiiii.” And don’t even get us started on how she pronounces “parmigiana” with like eleven syllables.

Jaime King in Calvin Klein

It’s too pale and washed out, but that coat is pretty chic. The whole look would be lifted up with a pair of colored shoes.

Kristen Wiig in Calvin Klein

YES! COLOR! Kristen is wearing COLOR! Thank you, fashion gods!

She looks good.

Krysten Ritter in Romona Keveza

No complaints.

Lake Bell in Etro

Yikes. From the top:

  2. We’d like the dress without the sleeves and yoke.
  3. Orthopedic.

Leslie Mann in Calvin Klein

Simple, but not bad. Except the shoes, of course.

Naya Rivera in Moschino

Also a bit too simple, but we have no complaints.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

Great color and great dress.

Rashida Jones in Calvin Klein

Love everything, but the shoes, which we don’t actually hate, but don’t think they go with the rest of the look. This is close to a Personal Best for Rashida.

Sarah Paulson

Ugh. It’s not awful, but the cardigan takes the look down significantly and the shoes should’ve been black.

That is literally the best Rashida Jones has ever looked. And probably ever will again.

    • tonibaloney

I read that as if Chris Traeger were speaking: *LIT’RALLY*

    • filmcricket

       My exact thought.

    • kirkyo

Damn. Well now I have to go back to the theory that she can, but just *doesn’t*

    • Mary229

She looks adorable but I still want someone to do something with her hair.  I just don’t like those bangs.   Such a pretty lady and I love her.  But I just want to comb her hair ALL THE TIMe.

  • theblondette

Has Tadashi Shoji done anything wrong ever???? <3

    • theblondette

PS has anyone noticed what nice legs Octavia has?

    • holdstillnow

Love the dress, but the baggy area around her elbows are unfortunate.

      • theblondette

The sleeves could do with taking in a little, it’s true!

    • ecallaw1977

Yes.  See the dress Jennie Garth wore, featured by TLo in one of their other posts of this event.

      • julnyes

I think if it was a size smaller or a different color that dress would be fine for Garth.

    • I’m thinking he should just sign Octavia Spencer to an endorsement deal as the face of Shoji (if he hasn’t already).  We’ve been talking a lot about how good his clothes make her look, the opposite is also true: she makes his clothes look good.

      • theblondette

I guess she’s pretty much his unofficial face already, but an official deal would be sweet. I love seeing how good she looks lately, because she shows regular women that yes, their curves can look awesome in pretty designer clothes.

      • Mary229

True story.  I think about her now every time I see a Tadashi Shoji dress in a store…the brand recognition is there.

    •  Did you see Jenni Garth at the same event?  AWFUL.

  • NC_Meg

Rashida looks so good! Bravo! I love the dress and the necklace. Octavia and Kristin Wiig are also looking fab.

  • Liza

Why should women definitely wear makeup on the red carpet? I’m not arguing about this particular case, I’m just wondering on TLo’s (and other people’s) thoughts generally. I don’t think that it should always be the case that a woman wears makeup on the rc. Should they if they are wearing tons of free clothes?

    • Honestly? Because when you’re wearing an very expensive dress, jewelry and pair of shoes, it looks unbalanced without at least a little lip gloss and something to make your eyes pop. Especially if you’re getting your picture taken, because the lighting on your average step and repeat is HARSH.

And yes, a large number of men on the RC are sporting things like bronzers and even mascara to make their eyes pop and their teeth look whiter.

      • Liza

Okay, I’ll keep thinking about this, thanks.

        • It’s like when you see the girls in cut offs and tank tops on the subway and they have on tons of make-up; mis-match! Your face has to match the rest of you. If you are dressed up, your face should be dressed up. If you are wearing work out clothes, make-up just looks wrong.

        • mayavaly

I think it’s good to ask the question sometimes. I was a little contemplative the other day after the “not too mommy for earrings” post about Jennifer Garner. Funny as hell though that comment was, and I am absolutely not meaning that the poor lady stars are somehow hard done by, or invoking a one rule for women another for men argument, but life apparently does still happen to famous people. I think both Lane Bell and Jennifer Garner probably did do their hair, probably did put a bit of lippy on, and certainly did slip into an expensive dress. They just didn’t do any of that very well (because see just about any RC appearance of Tilda Swinton, and I am pretty sure she is mostly make-up free, and yet she manages to look spectac). I like the fact that we can have a conversation about it here, though, and that nobody is wedded to a view of what the RC look *should* be to the exclusion of all others (see Daily Mail right hand wall of shame for details). Beauty is much too abstract and ephemeral for that. And that’s why it’s so much fun to come back here day in and day out and be part of the conversation.

          •  Actually, Tilda wears quite a bit of makeup, it’s just that it tends to be fairly colorless.

          • Because, as an actress at her level in the industry, she has a business interest in knowing what her look is, and knowing how to project that image against the difficulties of the red carpet (i.e., the lighting, the background, the flash cameras).  In other words, I am agreeing with you that it’s a style thing, and also suggesting that it’s a business decision: an actress (or actor) appearing on the red carpet is reinforcing his or her brand, and makeup is part of how that happens.

          • Mary229

Great post.  I am a newcomer to this site and I absolutely LOVE it.  I love because, with rare exceptions, we can talk about these things for women and yet I don’t see the over the top shaming or nasty behavior you might find elsewhere.  All in all, it’s a pretty supportive environment where we can ask legitimate questions and get various answers.

      • Mary229

Agreed.   All these women are absolutely lovely.  It’s not a knock on their natural beauty at all.   The truth is also that make-up protects your skin.  I know that not every woman loves wearing it but it can be good for your skin go wear it.

    • MilaXX

Personally I think everyone looks better with at least tinted moisturizer and mascara, but on the RC where you have lights flashing and washing you out, I think makeup is even more important. Otherwise you look wandered in from the dressing room trying on looks for a special event.

    • BrooklynBomber

I don’t get what wearing free clothes has to do with it. (Also, I don’t assume all these people are wearing free clothes; the more “minor” celebs may be buying.) Anyway, I can’t imagine knowing you’re going to have your picture taken, and not wanting to help the process along. If someone’s the totally au natural type who never wears make up, that’s fine, but then they’re probably not wearing a designer dress, either.

      • Liza

Yeah, you’re right about the clothes. I think it would be cool to see a celebrity (woman) who went completely au natural all or most of the time. I can’t think of any. Maybe the men are wearing much more makeup than I had ever suspected too, I don’t know.

        • BrooklynBomber

I agree–I appreciate the few who really insist on being themselves and not conforming to current ideas about fashion and beauty.

  • Aw I think y’all are a little hard on Busy. She needed a matchy shoe – another color would have been too much.

    • teensmom99

This was where to go with a darker blue.  I know the TLo rule is to pick a color that isn’t too dominant–and the fluorescent yellow was not the one to pick.

      • Darker blue or black would have been great.

      • I dunno, black or dark blue seems a little heavy. I agree that the goldenrod was a misstep but I probably would have picked white or light blue.

      • jenno1013

I think Krysten Ritter’s shoes would have looked nice with Busy’s dress.  They’re a warm tone if that’s what she wanted, rather than a cooler blue or black.

    • MilaXX

I disagree, the dress is so busy a black or navy shoe would have toned it down and made it work fair better than those dyed to match  bridesmaids shoes.

      • mayavaly

I agree on the shoes, but I thought the bag was pretty inspired.

  • Nice_Shirt

I have to disagree on Octavia Spencer.  I hate the dress and don’t think the color is doing anything for her.  She might have carried it off with a softer hairstyle.

    • mountainFashionista

It reads as total MOB to me, and the B picked the color to match her scheme…

  • Ick like times a billion. There are so many bad over-worked nose jobs here….look again and you will seeeeeeeeeee…..

  • teensmom99

Rashida’s mom was there so maybe she gave her daughter some advice.  Olivia looks amazing–but I’d like her to buy some darker lipstick.  And maybe a personal best for Kristin W now that she has listened to her gay uncles.

    • charlotte

I hope her mom won’t advise her to have plastic surgery in the years to come…

  • MilaXX

This lot is a little better simply because there’s some color.

I can’ stand Giada aka little big head either.

  • If Jaime King and Rachel Zoe (Part 2) stood together, they would look like cake-toppers for a lesbian wedding.

    • Ann

With Jennie Garth as Mother of the Bride!  What is it with all the white dresses for fall?

  • dorothea_brooke

Lake Bell is such a beautiful woman.  Does she dress like this to make us mortals feel better?

  • librarygrrl64

I haaaaaaate Giada. You are so spot-on with your comments!

    • Kato16

Yes! Had to stifle my laugh.

      • demidaemon

I use to not like her (I thought she was a little condescending), but my mom LOVES her. So, it was ineveitable that she grew on me. Her show is a little like food porn (though Nigella Lawson will always be my one, true food porn love).

        • Qitkat

Nigella has a fun new food porn show, Nigellissima on BBC, which is her take on Italian food, which apparently she seriously loves, but of course it’s all done *her way*. The Brit tabloids shred her to bits, but I agree with you.

  • Rashida Jones usually confounds me with her unique ability to be naturally STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS and yet awkward and bag-ladyish on the runway.   This is closer to what we should expect from such a beautiful woman.

    • holdstillnow

Kind of like Maggie Gyllenhall, though I kind of wonder if she’s actually doing it on purpose.

  • kschwarting

Loving the two CK dresses on Kristen and Rashida–simple, but with lovely lines and colors.

  • kimmeister

I love Busy’s dress and her makeup looks great.  She just needed completely different accessories.
Eek, why do Jaime’s lapels go all the way down to her crotch??  It’s a torso-lengthening look.
Love the color and neckline of Kristen Wiig’s dress.  Would look better a tad shorter.
Rashida looks pretty good but not sure I’m onboard with the winged eye makeup on her.

  • BrooklynBomber

There must be some sort of shoe shortage in L.A. these days….

  • Patricia Gillett

LOL at the Giada takedown! Personal best for Kristen Wiig. She looks great in simple cuts and that color (finally!) is awesome on her.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Every time I see Octavia Spencer in a Tadashi Shoji, I want to buy that dress. She looks THAT GOOD in them.

  • formerlyAnon

I really like Naya Rivera’s dress and Jaime King’s coat. Perhaps I’m having a creamy/beige moment. Ms. King should have chosen the coat in a color or put it over a dress in a solid color.

That green Ms. Spencer’s wearing is awesome.

    Busy Phillip’s shoes are such a . . . bright color.

And I have to disagree and say that Ms. Paulson’s deployment of the cardigan IS awful. She looks like a woman in her 30’s stuck wearing a dress she’s owned for 15 years and for which she is borderline too old.In desperation she grabbed a cardigan from her office wardrobe to throw over it, hoping that would make it better, but it just pushes the look over the line.

  • Call me Bee

Rashida and Octavia FTW!!  And Sarah Paulsen is a close third.  I disagree about the black shoes with this girly white dress–the shoes here don’t distract.  I do agree about the cardigan.  It should have been left behind for the RC.

  • dulcian

Rashida, girl, that is so totally your silhouette!  And color!  Brava!

    • MilaXX

I like the dress, but the hair & the necklace read a bit Pocahontas to me.

      • dulcian

She’s making progress, though. Baby steps…

  • LittleKarnak

    Covet Octavia’s dress…

  • fiestyfashionfem

TLo – re: Giada – Tell us how you really, really feel.  Hee hee.

  • Lilithcat

Y’know, you guys could save a lot of writing time if you just put “everyone wore bad shoes” in your initial comments!

  • nannypoo

I also cannot stand Giada de Laurentiis. Too many teeth, giant boobs falling into the food processor, irritating in every way. No one is that happy.

    • angryparsnip

You said exactly everything I was going to say but so much better.

      cheers,  parsnip

  • Did we ever mention how we can’t stand her? Especially when she’s
talking all Valley Girl and then hits an Italian word and suddenly she’s
Sophia Loren? We threw our remote at the TV one time when she
pronounced “spaghetti” as “spagheeeeettiiiiii.” And don’t even get us
started on how she pronounces “parmigiana” with like eleven syllables.

I know those tags probably don’t work, but, you know.

Yes.  THIS!  I cannot stand that woman.  The whole spiel.  You have it down to a TEE!  Not to mention how she always reminds me of a giant ANT!  Is that wrong?  Is it so wrong that I think she looks like an ANT?

  • 1. Wiping away tears because we’re having another moment guys; a moment of joint distate – the strongest moment there is – the kind of moment that bring us togther. Giada..sniff, sniff…I hate her too.
    2. Kristen W. – finally – looking lovely.
    3. Leslie Mann’s hair is distractingly awful.
    4. Naya Rivera in Ann Taylor Loft – seriuosly – wtf? – she is so young!
    5. Octavia for the win.
    6. Sarah Paulson always looks pissed to have been forced to leave the house.

  • Judy_J

Giada gets on my last nerve, too. The over-pronounciating of Italian words, the obligatory cleavage-exposing blouses, and that ear-to-ear frozen smile. I can’t watch her.

  • I always expect Giada Di Laurentis’s head to open at the mouth, like a pez dispenser. I cannot stand her.

Lake Bell’s dress just needs an “Enter Here” sign above the vag-graphic. What IS it with the fabrics lately? Jeez.

  • Am I the only one seeing a startling resemblance between Sarah Paulson and Emma Caufield? It’s kind of freaking me out.

  • SewingSiren

Krystin and Octavia look by far the best. Everybody else looks just okay. Except Busy, who looks like crap.

  • Targettaste

Lake Bell’s skirt reminds me of those perspective illusions: Are her lady parts exploding outward, or are there warriors throwing spears at her parts?

  • Deedles

Holy crap! Giada really IS the Second Coming of Susan Lucci!

  • paginatrix

Your comments re: Giada De Laurentiis have made me a happy woman.

  • Rashida Jones, my goodness, it’s about time.  I kinda like Kristen Wiig with dark hair, she looks like a totally different person.

I’m on the anti-Giada train.  She’s more annoying than a set of dog balls near your face.  But the accented foreign words is pretty normal down here in SoCal, so I can’t hate her for that (although there are other reasons lol).  Even the news anchors do it, don’t you remember Miranda Veracruz de la Hoya Cardinal from Married With Children?  Perfect example.

  • Do you think anyone cares that you hate them? Such an ugly word in the gay community! 😉

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Leslie Mann’s hair looks like it has been chewed on by beavers.  What the HELL?  She needs to cut that mess and then color it in such a way that it looks like she is from this planet.

  • GTrain

I love you for the Giada De Laurentiis shade.

  • Sara LaBatt

Kristin Wiig found the perfect colors for her hair and dress.  She looks amazing.

Rashida, FINALLY.  Love this blue on her.  Her face is funny though, like she looking at us to see if we like it.

Why does Krystin Ritter always look like she’s between haircuts or something?  Her hair is always awkward to me.  Especially the bangs.

Jamie King’s look is odd.  With the pulled down and back hair and the looooong jacket with loooooong lapels she almost looks like she’s melting.  I don’t dislike it, it’s just strange to look at.

Busy always looks like she’s got her shoulders up in her ears in these pictures.  She’s quite pretty but when she does that she looks uncomfortable, insecure, and it makes her shoulders look really wide.  I think it’s a pretty cool dress, but agree that the shoes were a bridge too far.

  • alyce1213

Ever notice how Giada DiLaurentiis starts every other sentence with “My grandfather . . .” ?

Kristin Wiig’s dress is a big improvement — but those shoes! Leslie Mann’s shoes are a lot better than hers.

Octavia Spencer takes the prize. That dress is mad sexy and elegant, just perfect for her.

  • Imasewsure

Annual Women in Hollywood, part 75…. so this event includes literally EVERY woman in Hollywood then?
Ummm Rashida looks nice… hate Giada too

  • Carla_Charlton

So many pairs of awful shoes…

  • Presumptuous Insect

Giada? Yet another product of nepotism and she has a big giant head.

  • RzYoung

Wiig looks incredible! She’s lightening her hair again which I’m really happy about, that red suits her very well

  • DCSheehan

Rashida Jones! Great blue. I love that odd necklace thing. I don’t even mind the shoes.

  • MaryMitch

I really liked Busy Philipps’ look. Sure the dress WAS “busy”, but was such a happy dress.

I wish Melissa McCarthy would talk to Octavia Spencer’s stylist.

  • I am sorry, its a pretty enough dress, but my first thought when I looked at Anna Kendrick was “titty tiara!” and now I can’t un-see it.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like Busy Philipps’ dress and I think her hair and makeup are ok (not her accessories). Since she’s such a mess all the time, I wanted to say that.

  • poggi

Hah!  I think the same thing.  You guys are awesome.

  • hmariec19

Holy shit, I have never noticed this before, but Giada has an ENORMOUS HEAD.

  • ballerinawithagun

I don’t care for this Tadashi Shoji on Octavia. It may look great in person but the shininess does not work in photos. Maybe a black lining would have set off the beautiful green and I would line the arms also. The vague attempt at a cowl just looks like her breasts are taking up the drape of the cowl.
Speaking of green–Kristen Wiig looks great in that color, but I think the skirt should be a few inches shorter, especially with her fabulous legs.

  • I hate Anna Kendrik’s dress.
I’d like Busy Philips’ if it weren’t so… busy. Kidding aside, I kinda love the dress, but I wish she’d worn different accessories.
Kristin Wiig showed up on the red carpet wearing errand-hair. And the shoes are awful.
Naya, Octavia and Rashida all look good!

  • Don’t throw your remote at the TV — it means you have to watch the crap longer because you have to walk over to get it before changing the channel.  Use a throw pillow or cat toy instead.

  • julnyes

Rashida looks fantastic and I actually really like her necklace though she needs to take that stupid feather out of her hair.

  • EEKstl

I literally stopped breathing for a second when I saw Octavia Spencer in that dress.  First of all she looks gorgeous.  Secondly I MUST HAVE THAT DRESS!  Breathtaking (literally!).

  • Amy_R

I was home sick yesterday and indulged in some Couch + Cooking shows. Giada is so annoying I could only take 5 minutes. She must have said the 11 syllable “parmigiana-reggiana” 10 times, then slipped and said “parmesian’ once like a regular person. Poser.

  • V.

I also want to throw my remote at the screen every time I hear italian words pronounced the wrong way on american tv shows, but I can’t ’cause I watch them on my laptop ^_=

  • afabulous50

We Italians hate it when people say Mutzarella or Ri-COT-ta….just sayin!

  • nancylee61

Giada – Bobble Head Doll. She looks very strange.

  • My goodness, I feel exactly the same way about Giada.  I also can’t stand how on her show her head is always subtly back lit so it looks like she has a friggin halo around her.

  • Larkin21

Definitely a personal best for Rashida Jones. Perfect dress, great hair and make-up, appropriate accessories. It’s simple look that should be easy for her to replicate. I’ll be optimistic and keep my fingers crossed for her.

  • I love how you hate her

  • MaryAtRealityTea

Busy Phillips looks like she’s wearing a paint by numbers kit my grandma owned in ’76. That’s the long way of saying it’s fug.

  • xmixiex

i don’t care if someone loves/hates giada (she gets on my nerves a bit, personally) but when people pick on her speech it makes me crazy.  she was born in ROME.  do you think if you moved to another country, and spoke their language, that you’d suddenly stop pronouncing english words the way you learned/correctly??  it’s just so silly.

    • Oh, please. She was raised in America and has absolutely no Italian accent whatsoever. Lidia Bastianich pronounces Italian words correctly when she’s doing her cooking show, but she doesn’t make such an obvious show of it as Giada does.

      • littlemissstrange

THANK YOU, OH MY GOD, A THOUSAND TIMES, THANK YOU!!!!!!! I fucking HATE that shit, when people have a totally American accent until they come across a word from a different language and then exaggerate the shit out of it. Like news anchors. I FUCKING HATE NEWS ANCHORS.

And I get the feeling Giada’s a hardcore bitch in real life, there’s something so fake and reptilian about her.

  • I think Sarah Paulson thrifted that old white cardigan I got rid of when I retired from nursing.

  • LeifBallard

I just wanted to say that Anna Kendrick looks like her boobs are wearing a crown….kind of love that but yeah needs a different shoe for sure!

  • Thank you for your assessment of ol’ Sharkmouth de Laurentis.  Can.Not.Stand.

  • Maria D

Why does Lake Bell’s dress have a big black star in the vag region?

Sarah Paulson looks as if she’s off to a garden party in Berkshire.

Rashida Jones is SUCH  a scrolldown fug.

  • oohsparkley!

These ladies were looking good. I liked Busy’s shoes with her dress.  Can’t help it, I like matchy. They don’t look like dyed to match to me. I thought they looked like suede. I hate satin shoes – they look cheap to me.

  • Candigirl1968

I totally agree on Giada.  Guy Fieri does that same thing.
I’m loving Jamie King’s outfit.  It might work with Rashida’s shoes.
