Damian Lewis for GQ Magazine

Posted on October 29, 2012

Homeland star (and current Lorenzo crush) Damian Lewis gets the GQ treatment from… oh, just guess.

Star of ‘Homeland’ Damien Lewis is featured in the November 2012 issue of GQ magazine photographed by Ben Watts.

Bomber jacket, $2,125 by J.Lindeberg. Shirt, $245 by Nick Wooster for Hamilton 1883. Jeans, $128 by A|X Armani Exchange. Tie, $195 by Burberry Prorsum. Shoes, $850 by Ralph Lauren. Socks by Falke. Sunglasses by Persol. Tan bag by Zara. Other bags by Louis Vuitton.

Bomber jacket, $216 by ASOS. Shirt, $545 by Louis Vuitton. Tie, $180 by Salvatore Ferragamo. Pants (suit), $1,395 by Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. Shoes, $1,530 by Tom Ford. Socks by Turnbull & Asser. Tie bar by The Tie Bar. Watch by Hamilton.

Bomber jacket, $1,250 by Ovadia & Sons. Shirt, $225 by Seize sur Vingt. Tie, $115 by Ralph Lauren Black Label. Pants, $127 by Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen. Shoes, $725 by O’Keeffe. Sunglasses by Garrett Leight. Watch by TAG Heuer.

He looks really great, but we have a hard time not having a negative reaction to the bomber jacket. It just reeks of douchiness to us.

As for Homeland, it’s giving us all kinds of life. We’re having major issues with some of the many implausibilities in Brody’s side of the story, but everything involving Carrie has been incredible and last night’s show could represent a major shift in the status quo going forward. We’re loving this season.

Against my better judgement (I have conniptions whenever film/television tries to tackle the Middle East) I finally checked out Homeland and it is so figgin’ good. He’s the best part for me, brings real nuance to his performance. I too am developing a major crush.

    • http://twitter.com/FuLinlin FuLinlin

I guess you have a Middle Eastern background? So glad that you like Homeland, I really love it and thought it is more nuanced then most TV series, but sometimes its still difficult to judge about such things for somebody who’s not affected and I was afraid I might have overseen something horrible offensive they have done so its reassuring to hear that you like it!

      • Sobaika

I’m Pakistani and Muslim. I studied International Affairs with a focus on Middle Eastern Studies though. I feel like so many attempts at tackling this part of the world are just factually incorrect (which is stupid, because all they would need to do is call a professor or journalist for some info) with a side bonus of offensive. Homeland does a pretty decent job at it though.

I have loved him forever, and have never forgiven (nor will forgive) NBC for cancelling “Life” in favor of “The Jay Leno Thinks He’s a Big Fucking Deal Experiment.”

I’ll allow the bomber jacket, though, douchiness or not, because he *is* Captain Winters from “Band of Brothers” and if anyone’s allowed to wear a bomber jacket, it’s a WWII war hero.

    • kschwarting

I have sighed over him ever since “The Forsyte Saga.”  He brought such vulnerability to someone who was supposed to be the villain of the piece.  I don’t love that bomber, but adore that last photo.

Also, LOL at the Jay Leno line.  I’ve never gotten his appeal.

      • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

LOVE him so much in that. Interesting to see him playing another complex, sympathetic antagonist in “Homeland.” He’s good at it. But he’s good at being the flat-out hero, too.

        LOVE HIM!

        • 3boysful

I loved him in Forsyte.  He was so cold and mean, and then kind of vulnerable and pathetic at the end.  By contrast, a friend who is working with him while he’s in town filming says he is very funny and nice.  He’s been spotted at Earth Fare, so I need to start haunting their aisles more!

          • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

Yes! I loved that sympathetic asshole though I was Team Jolyon all the way, I still *felt* for poor, broken, pathetic Soames.

I also love that he’s married to Narcissa Malfoy. Good to hear he’s nice in person — he seems as if he would be, but you never know.

      • alannab99

I’ve got you beat. I’ve had an off-and-on crush on him ever since 1995 when I was doing study abroad in London and went to see Hamlet at the Hackney Empire four times partly because Ralph Fiennes was marvelous, but mostly because I had a thing for gingers and young Damian Lewis as Laertes was cuuuuuuuute. ;)

And yeah, I want to loathe Brody for what he’s done — despite his oh-so-photogenic sweaty panic breakdown last night — but I just can’t. One redhaired guess as to why. (Though buckets of credit should also go to Claire Danes and the writers. Amazing all ’round.)

        • editrixie

If you saw him that far back and loved him, did you see him in the British movie Warriors (called Peacekeepers in other incarnations, but that was the original title)? I think it was a TV movie, but it was so hard to get a copy of back in the day that I was never certain. Anyway, it also starred Ioan Gruffud and a host of other amazing young UK actors as soldiers dealing with the emotional turmoil of war in the former Yugoslavia…it’s utterly devastating. Damian’s part isn’t huge but we do get full frontal for a brief moment.

I had a bitch of a time finding it on DVD, I think the release I finally got was from the Netherlands. I really ought to convert it and put it up somewhere.

    • Mismarker

“Life” was such a great show.  I, too, blame NBC and Jay Leno for killing it.  Effers.

    • turtleemily

I was going to add that if anyone is allowed the bomber jacket, it’s Major Winters!

I love Damian. Keep meaning to rent Homeland since I don’t have cable. I’ll put up with Dreamcatcher for that man.

      • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

I couldn’t remember his final rank and was too lazy to look it up — sounds like someone (me) is in need of a Band of Brothers rewatch! I just finished rewatching Life and it is as excellent as I remembered.

Do watch Homeland — he’s doing just amazing work on it.

        • turtleemily

It’s ALWAYS a good time for a BoB rewatch!

Homeland is probably what’s going to push me into getting a Netflix subscription. Actually, it looks like my library has it on order, so, yay!

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I loved that show so much.  And his natural British accent sounds so weird to me.  But look for the Graham Norton episode with him and Dominic West.  They’re just too perfect.

      • MilaXX

was that the one where he was growing his hair out from playing Shakespeare?

        • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I think so. I remember them discussing his hairstyle.  I generally forget what they’re selling and focus on whatever crazy story Graham gets them to admit to.  This one featured Dominic West:  Bridezilla and Gerard Depardieu.

          • MilaXX

oh I think I saw that episode. They talked about Gerald’s infamous peeing on the plane incident.

      • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

I will! Thanks! And, yes, he’s done so much American-voice work, it is odd when he’s just being himself (or Soames).

    • angryparsnip

OMG ! I thought i was the only person who saw and loved “Life”  Jay Leno = bad !
I had a hard time liking him after seeing him in The Forsyte Saga he was too good at being cold… but Band Of Brothers helped.
      cheers,  parsnip

  • Le_Sigh

Love him – have loved him since Band of Brothers.

  • ChiliP

I don’t normally go for gingers (no disrespect, ginger nation!), but I think Damian Lewis is very attractive. His talent has a lot to do with that.

As for Homeland, I was initially hesitant, but I’m fully on board now. Excellent acting in that show. Although there have been a few too many suspensions is plausibility this season (um, texting Abu Nazir from the control room? REALLY BRODY??), I have to remind myself that TV is a medium for entertainment and go with the flow.

  • gabbilevy

It’s douchey, but whatever. He looks really fun, which is not necessarily and adjective I identify with him, just because Brody seems like such a stick-in-the-mud kinda guy, what with the whole maybe-terrorist double-life thing.

Also… “bomber” jackets on Rep. Brody. Not an accident.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5WKLKGER4FZ7MJX43OSYDBDPOE Maggie

He is looking very Steve McQueen-ish here.

  • Trisha26

Agree about the bomber jacket douche factor. Damian Lewis is one of my fave actors! I was devastated when “Life” was cancelled, such a complex characters. Check out the creepy indie film “Keane.”

  • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

    I heart the last photo.

  • http://twitter.com/k8twolf Katie Wolf

Lorenzo, why hasn’t he been your crush since Band of Brothers? Criminal oversight!!!!

  • agentilities

Loved last night’s episode of Homeland.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OD35QQZNBPZJXWTCBY7N4EE7VY Sarah

I’m sorry, I always see him as that possessive creep Soames from The Forsyte Saga.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

love him, have loved him since his absolutely mind-bendingly amazing turn in the forsyte saga. <3 talented, hot gingers. tlo, please tell me you are holed up watching the forsyte saga on netflix, and if you are not, get on it stat!

    • cleverlady

love, love, love this man… since Forsyte Saga, Band of Brothers, Life (great fun TV series that lasted not at all long enough) and am waiting for my Netfix Homeland (saw the 1st episode when it was available on-line… teaser!) DVD’s to become available (“very long wait”… argh).  I’ll watch anything DL is in… including all of the above clothes.  I’m sure all of you are right in your criticism of the bomber jacket.  I DON”T CARE.  Did I mention I think he’s fabulous?!!!!!

  • Introspective

Homeland is riveting. Love his and Claire’s work. They are ELECTRIC together. Saw the last season on demand all at once and it is AGONY to wait a week between eps this season.

He looks great here. No qualms. Overall the style plays to his character and the color story works well w his ginger action. Nice.

    • rumcg66

That’s exactly what I did, binged on the first season, watching all 12 episodes in like 3 days. Now having to wait a week between episodes is killing me.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Amazing episode last night. Gotta re-watch “that scene….” again tonight. At least it’s not hitting 24- level ridiculousness. I am wondering how they’re going to continue this for season 3, though…

    Yeah, jacket is douche-y

  • Rand Ortega

Le sigh. He’s all sorts of yummy gorgeous. Though I’m not sure I like the Asos bomber. It looks cheap.
If the Make A Wish Foundation had a division for self centered star fu***rs who weren’t ill, I’d ask to suck on Damien Lewis’ chin. For a year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I love that you said he was Lorenzo’s crush because he kinda looks like Tom, I found that adorable.

  • MilaXX

Yeah that bomber jacket is giving me James Franco levels of douchiness, but the show is all kinds of awesome.  Last night I was like :O
I may have called foul on him sending a text to Nasir a few weeks ago, but that interview where carried broke him down did indeed give life to everyone watching.

    • muzan-e

I am not so good with television. I mean, I’m not good with television unless I have a book to read during, or at least something to occupy my hands.

      Homeland’s an exception.
And what occupied my hands during last night’s episode was covering my mouth whenever its jaw dropped – which was often. Mostly with delight, and often while cringing. I have nothing but love for a show which can generate interactions that leave me horrified and ecstatic in the same moment.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

    Leather bomber jackets- YES!
    Satin bomber jackets- NO!

  • Qitkat

Last night’s scene with him and Carrie was just incredible. One of the few times I’ve actually forgotten I was watching television.

  • http://profiles.google.com/valencia.lucia87 Lucía Valencia

Lorenzo’s crush is a pale kinda irish looking redhead? Coincidence? I DON’T THINK SO! ;D

  • j_anson

I have no problem with the bomber jacket in principle; it’s the popped collar that kills it.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I am glad you were able to pin the douchiness to the bomber jacket – I just felt the whole thing was a bit twattish. Although I do like him. He’s hosted Have I Got News For You a few times and usually acquits himself quite well.

  • Imasewsure

Notice that he is trying to down his bourbon or scotch before they take his picture in that hideous bomber jacket…points for him!

  • Carla_Charlton

I wish they’d have taken it easy on darkening the eyebrows, though.  I notice on “Homeland” that the makeup people do the same thing, although it’s not always consistent — sometimes the brows are dark and in the very next scene, they’re light.

    • Verascity

I’ve been noticing that on Homeland too and I find it SUPER distracting when they’re too dark. Luckily, they were perfect last night, but then his tan kept coming and going instead.

  • rumcg66

I wish TLo would add Homeland to the series they recap. I LOVE this show so much, my crush on Adrian Lewis/Brody grows every episode, and his and Claire Danes’ acting last night guaranteed them more Emmys next year.

  • EEKstl

LOVE me some Damien Lewis.  What a phenomenal actor, and Homeland continues to be my favorite show on television.  Completely obsessed with this season; Claire Danes continues to astound.

  • guest2visits

Admire him as an actor; and one of my husband’s fave’s.   Looks like the bomber’s jacket here has given him some super hero
abilities like running, drinking scotch, and riding around in garment carriers.. !  (although, is that ice in the glass; maybe not scotch).

  • Verascity

Now you guys just need to watch Breaking Bad when it comes back next year. :)

  • PaulaBerman

It’s not the bomber jacket that reeks of douche. It’s the bomber jacket with the turtleneck… ugh. But I <3 him and Homeland is off the hook. Never before has a show managed to surprise me every single week.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

its a good editorial, but did they un-ginger him? thats a crime!

as for homeland, i enjoy the show so much. some of the political implications i dont necessarily agree with, but theyre not preachy/in-your-face about it, and the writing and acting is really sophisticated.

  • dharmabum8

I swear I popped in here thinking “I wonder if T Lo will post about Damian Lewis’s GQ spread…I’m not sure they watch Homeland…fingers crossed…” and shazam! It’s like you’re blogging genies and I rubbed your fabulously turned out bottle, or something slightly less unintentionally suggestive. Bomber jackets always make me think Tom Cruise and from there it’s a short leap to douchey, but the leather version is actually kinda sexy on DL. The satin one needs to burned and never spoke of again.

Is there a more riveting pair of acting partners on television these days than Danes and Lewis? After watching this past episode of Homeland I think not.

  • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow aka Darth Mommy

    I love him!!!

  • jw_ny

    He’s quite sexy…Lo has good taste.  ;)

I’m not a fan of bomber jackets, but some guys do look good in them without appearing overly douchey (totally douchey when paired with a turtleneck and aviator sunglasses.)  I would consider wearing the Ovadia & Sons jacket tho…doesn’t look overly bulky and the chocolate colored fur is a nice.

  • ojosazules

I have never gotten over the creep he played in the Forsyte Saga. And now he is creepy again in Homeland.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Spodick/100000711112594 John Spodick

Is Carrie’s confrontation with Bordy her Emmy reel for next year?  If so, she’s got another lock on it!

  • margaret meyers

New, shiney bomber jackets are extra douchy.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh Captain Winters I love you so.

  • Kristy Evans

Oh, Lorenzo has a thing for handsome redheads? You don’t say! ;)

And I disagree about the bomber jacket. I think he is serving up (ginger) Steve McQueen realness, especially in that second photo.

  • Darkhog

I love Damien Lewis, he’s a great actor, and Homeland is a great fit for him.
