Cover Girl: Christina Hendricks for Glamour UK

Posted on October 03, 2012

Christina is serving up 21st Century Joan Holloway realness.

Christina Hendricks covers the November 2012 issue of Glamour UK magazine photographed by Walter Chin in an Erdem dress paired with Giuseppe Zanotti slingbacks.

Erdem Ivy printed silk dress

That is both a fabulous picture and a fabulous dress. It calls to mind the mid-Century body-hugging styles she sports on Mad Men while looking modern and up-to-the-minute chic. Love the shoes too. And somehow, Christina manages to defy the color rules for red heads, because we never would’ve thought that a dress that pretty much matches her hair exactly would look good on her.

it’s the best she’s ever looked

    • mjude

      i totally agree with you.

    • Kiltdntiltd

Absolutely right! She looks perfect here. Not a single quibble. I feel much better now. I’ve been pretty rough on the lady stars today. She has saved me. Lol

      •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Can we still be mean to Glamour though? Because the design and colours of that cover are kind of Icky (what? I just got here! I haven’t filled out my meanie quota)

        • Kiltdntiltd

I say, go for it! They so very often deserve it.

        • Little_Olive

We had our minute with Glamour yesterday, but I say go for it. They deserve it. Plus this is the UK mag.

        • littlemac8

I just looked at Traditional Home last night and they featured a spread on Hermes orange and Tiffany blue — sounds like a trend!

        • boomchicabowwow

HA!  I had to scroll up when you mentioned Glamour!  I thought it was the cover of T.V. guide!

    • rh33

       Agree! She looks amazing.

    • VicD

      Agreed!  Personal best

    • Beth G

       I concur.

  • MilaXX

I would love to see her on a RC wearing that exact outfit. She looks greats

  • Chickadeep

    FAB. U. LOUS.

  • shirab

The dress on the model looks so lank and sad. It’s clearly much happier to be on a curvy person.

    • Vickiefantastico

      That was exactly my thought!

    • Sartorial_She

Exactly! It’s such a phenomenal dress, I was trying to think of some way to justify me buying it. But then I realized it wouldn’t look half that good on my not-so-curvy frame.

  • rawrgrowlrawr

She is my ultimate Girl Crush (well, her and Cate Blanchett). I adore that dress. It would look decidedly less luscious on me, but I do believe I should own it all the same.

  • AbbottRabbit

That dress is bananas good, and it looks SO much better on her than on that poor, headless, shapeless model.

  • Ali

It looks so much more dynamic on her than on the model. Rule defying dress indeed!

  • Elana Bryan

Christina – please wear this silhouette every day…you look fabulous girl!

  • shelley514

The Erdem dress looks so much better on Christina H. than it does on the model in that stock photo.  The dress hits CH’s curves in all the right places.  I don’t care for the shoes though — a little too matchy matchy and like what a grandma would think appropriate for that dress.   Also her makeup and the overall look of the photo is very washed out.  But she looks fabulous nonetheless.

  • Amelia Ross

its a pity she probably feels she has to distance herself from the ‘Joan Holloway Look’ even though it flatters her so well!

  • Judy_J

Wow!  She looks absolutely fabulous in that cover shot.  Love the dress and the shoes!

  • schadenfreudelicious

finally, a dress that fits and flatters!..she looks wonderful

  • Trisha26

  • Dot

Oooh, I love all of these colors. She looks fantastic — that dress fits her like a dream.

  • Paigealicious

That looks great, but is it even her real body?? She does look awesome, though.

    • AudreysMom

my thought exactly. She looks great but compared with the usual pictures of CH that we get here I’d say they photoshopped a couple cup sizes off her boobs, inches off her hips, and in general trimmed her silhouette.

      • Lauren Lynch Fox

I sensed some photo-shopping too and it pisses me off. I love the color on her and I love her

  • BazoDee

Personal best! By far -although that probably has to do with photoshop.

  • Rhonda Shore

Best look i’ve seen her in outside of “Mad Men.”

  • Araina23

She has the most gorgeous face.

  • siriuslover

Why, why, why can’t she consistently dress like that on the Red Carpet? That dress is full-stop gorgeous and it’s freaking unbelievably gorgeous on her.

  • gillian holroyd

I would’ve thought that the high-ish neck would not be flattering but she looks amazing. Please CH: take this dress and learn from it.

  • marlie

  • JennaH

um there is a lot of photo shop going on in that photo she has lost about a 1/3 of her body! , but love the dress

    • 3boysful

I thought so, too.  But she looks great.

  • Violina23

  • mhleta

“Christina manages to defy the color rules for red heads, because we never would’ve thought that a dress that pretty much matches her hair exactly would look good on her.” Something that’s really really helping with the color palette here is that cyan blue lettering behind her head and on the TV set on her hip. It makes her eye-color pop and gives a perfect contrast to all that orange. Great art direction here. Also, she does so much more for that dress than it does for the model. Great cover, Christina.

    • hexiadetrix

I guess she just picked whichever wig matched the dress.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

  • Kate4queen

Well damn, my size is sold out. No surprises there!

  • MoHub

Don’t completely agree with the statement about the color rules for redheads; it depends on the hair color. A rich auburn tends to look good with all autumn colors: olive greens, rich browns, and burnt oranges. A paler, blonder redhead would not be able to wear that color, though.

    • Ali

It’s really not the hair – it’s the skin, I think. Redheads tend to either be warm and yellow (with more orange-tinged hair usually, but there are exceptions), or the light pink porcelain (that tends to go auburn). A porcelain skin redhead like Nicole Kidman isn’t going to wear the same shades as more warm Julianne Moore.

      • DTLAFamilies

My son is an olive skinned redhead with dark brown eyes (Puerto Rican mom + Scottish dad) and he looks fantastic in autumn colors.

        • Ali

That sounds striking! We have a few redheads in my family (I’m so envious). Irish and Native American mix, so we get some interesting combinations as well.

  • Lily-Rygh

She is just unstoppable beautiful.  I would be bitter in my jealousy if I didn’t adore her so much…

  • granddelusion

She looks great here. So much better than with the baby heads shoved into her face.

    • j_anson

That’s because they’ve photoshopped the babyheads out of existence. That is definitely NOT her natural breast size.

  • AR16

What a great cover!  Non-US magazines always do great covers.  Now, will someone please tell me what TOWIE is?

    • roadtrip1000

It’s an acronym for the British TV series “The Only Way Is Essex”.

      • AR16

  • PrunellaV

I think the color of the dress makes her look washed out, like yellow on a blonde. She has the peachy skin that looks better in clear colors. But the silhouette is great.

  • Tatiana Luján

Why do you love those hideous shoes? I agree with you on everything else.

  • Larkin21

Great cover look! Although, I thought it was TVGuide and not Glamour when I first glanced at it. Still, she looks amazing. Her body type is necessary for that dress, as it looks rather boring on the model.

  • Ozski

Stunning. Now when will she be on the cover of the U.S. Glamour, hmm? Wait a second, I take that back. Terry Richardson might force her to pose looking like she’s shitting in the woods….

  • ShivaDiva

    Nailed it!

  • filmcricket

This is incredibly photoshopped – they’ve taken at least 10 pounds off her body, if not more, and her face only bears a passing resemblance to the real thing. And the reason she can wear ‘non-redhead’ colours is because she’s not a real redhead.

However, the dress is wonderful on her and I’m totally in agreement that she needs to find more silhouettes like this to wear. I love how many magazine covers she gets, because I love her and want only good things for her career.

    • fiestyfashionfem

THANK YOU!  I was shocked that no one mentioned the substantial photoshopping going on here.  I love her so much.  I love her body.  But the body that is attached to her head on this cover is not her body.  It is sort of like her body, with all the bumps and lumps taken off.  Which, I suppose, is the norm.  But It pisses me off because when I see her lumps and bumps I see a person who looks like me.  And I like that.

  • S_Swift

See, she looks so much better without the unnecessary frills and furbelows she usually employs on the red carpet. This is how she should always dress.

  • afabulous50

    I want that dress.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

       Isn’t it gorgeous?

      I’ll fight ya’ for it.

  • tallgirl1204

I think what really helps (other than that she’s standing still and posed perfectly) is the that the print helps define the hourglass.  I am a big fan of Ms. C wearing a belt to clarify that she has a waist, but this dress does it with the pattern.  Lovely, and it looks easy to wear, too.

  • Lani George

What redhead rule?  My sister has flaming red hair and ALWAYS looks good in a color that matches her hair!

    • Tatiana Luján

      So does/has my sister.

  • j_anson

She looks gorgeous… that having been said, I know crying Photoshop is getting boring, but either she is inexplicably wearing padded bras in real life, or they photoshopped her breasts WAY down. This is kind of a big deal because it’s often her cleavage she has trouble dressing for. It frustrates me that they essentially just edited out one of the defining characteristics of her shape.

  • EEKstl

She looks fab, but where did her boobs go?

  • j_anson

Also: this made me finally go look up what I’ve always wondered about. And yup: she can work this color because she’s not a natural redhead; she’s a blond. Therefore she doesn’t have the weird tricky redhead skin that makes red difficult (redheads have a different form of melanin in their skin which typically means they have both red and yellow tones in their skin, and red doesn’t work well in that.)

No shame in this: she looks great in the hair color she’s chosen to work, and that’s cool. But the different skin tone gives her more color options than most natural redheads would have.

  • Glammie

Love the cover, though I’m not sure the color on CH would be quite as good in real life.  The image is helped a lot by the balancing of the orange dress and red hair with the teal lettering of the logo.

  • Theresa Erbacher

Darlings, that’s not exactly how the color rules for redheads work. She’s a spring, so she can wear things with orangey undertones. It’s the blue-pinks she needs to stay away from.

  • VicksieDo

    Only works in October 😉

  • Heather

  • SignLadyB

    That is AWWESOOME

  • Cousin_Rose

  • alyce1213

Obviously this is photoshopped TO DEATH, but it’s still a really, really great dress for her.  Wish it were on the RC or street so we could actually see what her voluptuous body looks like in it.

  • l_c_ann

I think this may be the best she’s ever looked.  We see her pretty face and then glance at her body.  Both are great, but her face should be what folks look at first.

  • formerlyAnon

It’s a wonderful photo of her. I’d pay good money to know what the photo looked like before it was edited.

  • theblondette

    Joanie! Hearts in my eyes!

  • Scott Rohr

Realness? I love Ms. Hendricks. Period. Am I the only one who thinks her curves have been considerably toned down in this photo? In the photos of her out and about lately there is no way she is this size.

  • ChelseaNH

The print makes the orange work with her coloring.  She looks terrific.  And no babyheads!

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

  • SapphoPoet

I LOVE that dress–my favorite color! She looks wonderful.

  • Florence Whytingale

I love Cristina’s look here, but whoever designed that cover needs to be shot. It’s tacky and cheapens what is an otherwise stunning photo.

  • kimmeister

That apricot color is divine on her.

  • Emily Smith

    • MilaXX

Maybe because she is not a real ginger. She’s blonde but colors her hair.

  • SewingSiren

It’s a nice looking picture.  But it doesn’t quite look like her body.

  • Alloy Jane

This is great.  Too bad the cover is 50% dedicated to fucking.  I guess that’s why people buy these things though.

  • gabbilevy

She looks amazing and I’d like that dress now please.

  • NCDFan

She is rocking that dress. It looks amazing on her, much better than the model even.

  • bellafigura1

So, the Erdem is doing what the Peter Pilotti dress on Rashida Jones couldn’t. Using the print to flaaaattter, not compete with, the curves.

  • Sarah Veenstra

ok, I MUST know the source of whatever undergarments she’s wearing – they, and that dress, put her curves on display in the MOST flattering way. The perfect blend of Joan and the woman who plays her.

    • SewingSiren

      The brand name is Photoshop.

  • Lisa Kramp

    Huzzah for curves!

  • Candigirl1968

Fab.  Wish Christina would wear more of this type of thing off duty.

  • Lisa

Perfection!  Which is something we’ve not been able to always say about our girl!

  • jw_ny

That dress is actually quite ugly on the model…Christina makes it look good.  Must be her curves that does it.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Love that dress!  She looks stunning.

  • PeaceBang

    Major snaps.

  • AnneElliot

Gorgeous!  SO much better on her than on the model.

  • How to Faint

    ¡Qué cuerpazo!

  • JoannaOC

    Yeah, baby!

  • Gara St. James

This is the kind of dress she must choose more often. One with fit that respects her body. ’50s/early ’60s shape with modern style should always be her “go to” default setting.

  • CarolinLA

Boy, they photoshopped the shit out of that.  They toned down her bust and hip size and made her face look so generic.

  • aka Darth Mommy

She needs to have someone make that style dress for her in about 100 colors, different fabrics and wear the F out of them.

  • fungstyle

It’s that porcelain skin that makes colors that are often touchy for red heads work for her (she’s not a natural as is well known, and therefore doesn’t have all the freckles and rosy tones in her skin that a red head typically would).

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

I love that dress – fabulous photo of her!

  • sk8tfan

Attagirl. She looks perfect. Her shape flatters the design of the dress, and the dress looks better on her than on the model.

  • TieDye64

    Hot as hell!

  • Hildegerd Haugen

    My Queen.

  • Menega Sabidussi

she looks beautiful but i’m not thrilled with the phoroshop body reduction. why have someone so curvy on the cover if you’re going to cut her down to a meagre C-cup?

  • Menega Sabidussi

she looks beautiful but i’m not thrilled with the phoroshop body reduction. why have someone so curvy on the cover if you’re going to cut her down to a meagre C-cup?

  • librarygrrl64

I wish she wasn’t photoshopped so we could see exactly how that dress fits her. Unless she’s sporting a new bra, her chest looks a lot smaller here than it actually is. Seems like the ideal silhouette, color, and pattern for her, though.

  • HobbitGirl

I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a pale-ass redhead too, and pumpkin is one of my go-to autumn colors!
