Cover Girl: America Ferrera for Cosmopolitan for Latinas

Posted on October 04, 2012

We’ve got to say, Miss America (see what we did there?) is KILLING IT:

Dress by Dolce&Gabbana. Earrings by INC. Bangles by R.J. Graziano. Ring by Joseph Mimi.

America Ferrera covers the Fall/Winter 2012 issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas photographed by Yu Tsai and styled by Annie Ladino.

On getting the part to play Ugly Betty: “Anytime I walk into something apologetic or wondering if I’m good enough, I never get it. There’s a certain lack of ownership that people can detect. When I walk in and own it, that’s when I usually get it.”

On her struggles in Hollywood: “More often than not, I hate photos shoots and I hate being on the red carpet. I don’t think I’m very well equipped for the scrutiny or the pressure to be perfect, and I don’t think anyone really is. People are saying ‘We love you and love what you do,’ and you’re sitting there thinking, ‘I’m not skinny enough or pretty enough.’ It’s taken a lot of work to get over that.”

On dieting/inspiring young women: “How much time have I wasted on diets and what I look like? Take your time and your talent and figure out what you have to contribute to this world and get over what the hell your butt looks like in those jeans!”

Although we’re not sure that last quote has quite the impact she thinks it does, given that cover.

Dolce&Gabbana Leopard Print Dress

That’s a pretty spectacular dress. We think we might prefer it with the sleeves, however.

Yes, more impact with the sleeves.

    • http://redriverromance.wordpress.com/ Brittney

Looks like something Sophia Vegara would wear

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Personally, I think this is classier than anything Miss Sophia would wear.

    • http://twitter.com/Emelle M-e-l

She looks fabulous.  I like the sleeveless version.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I like the photo although she definitely looks like she’s sucking in….and then I’m sure they photoshopped her within an inch of her life.  I have always loved her, she was so great in Ugly Betty.

    • Sobaika

I LOVE HER! Will she be acting again soon? I’m waiting patiently.

Bod is looking killer and the dress is actually kind of ugly but is working on her.

      • Billie_Dawn

She has a supporting role in the cop movie “End of Watch” that’s out right now. She might not exactly strike you as quite suited for a role as a patrol officer in South Central Los Angeles, but she does pretty well with it.

        • librarygrrl64

Oh, if you’ve seen Real Women Have Curves, you’ll have no trouble picturing it. Girl has drama chops, for sure. :-)

    • teensmom99

with the sleeves and in a different color on Christina Hendricks.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

right, as usual, Gents.  The dress would be even more terrific on her with the sleeves.  The colors in it are wonderful for her skin tone.

    • aristida_girl

      yes, sleeves..she looks great!

    • Nicholas

Sadly, there is no way of knowing what she actually looks like, since Cosmo shop the hell out of their covers.

She reminds me of Suleikha Robinson who is on Homeland now and was on The Lone Gunmen and Rome before.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The dress looks better on Miss America than it does on the model! She looks great!

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

you stole that comment right out of my fingertips!  she looks waaaaay better than that skinny gringo.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ruthieoo Ruthie O

Amanda and Mark both have new shows this Fall… now, it’s time for a Betty comeback!

    • SewingSiren

Her head looks like it’s about 7″ in front of her body.

    • annie_wonder

      I WANT THAT DRESS.

      But only with the sleeves.

    • carolie_king

She looks beautiful, and I love the color, but I can’t stand the dress. Turquoise animal print, looking very 80s and not in a good way.  Needs some more feathery/permed hair and neon accessories.  And I think her lipstick color is off.

    • l_c_ann

I think it’s good news that there’s a Cosmo for Latinas.  That their only cover reference to acting inappropriate is a “Drinking game”  might mean their content isn’t as slutty either.

      • MilaXX

nah, it’s pretty much the same a US Cosmo

    • ChiliP

Dress looks a little tacky to my eyes, but she looks beautiful. And her lustrous hair is rivaling Miss Cathy’s in this picture!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

        Great hair!

    • Bozhi

Somehow I cannot see ANYONE getting over how their butt looks in their jeans.  At least not while they are still healthy enough to put on jeans and have enough money to buy jeans, the first thing they are going to worry about is how they look in the jeans.  It’s like a fact of life.  Who does she think she’s kidding?

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

well, yes, but at least she realizes that there IS a life beyond your butt in your jeans, unlike many young starlets.

    • In_Stitches

It takes some serious poise and skill to wear an electric blue cheetah print, ruched body-con scoop neck dress without looking cheap.

    • http://www.hilonwheels.blogspot.com hilonwheels

There’s a Cosmopolitan for Latinas? Who knew…I didn’t. She looks great!

      • kimmeister

What I didn’t know was that there is a Cosmo for Latinas . . . in English.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

Well, I’m skeptical, because, you know. But her SMILE looks great, and they can’t fake that. (Not in a good way, at least.)

    • Introspective

her face and hair look gorgeous. the color is great on her, but the dress is a meh for me. a bit too much peg bundy and not enough fashionista. but then again this is cosmo.

    • dress_up_doll

I’ve always loved America and think she’s a great actress. If Mark & Amanda have shows Betty should get one as well. Hey, maybe even Hilda! Anyway, she looks lovely (despite having been photoshopped within an inch of her life) and, I, too, prefer the sleeved version of the dress.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Severe photo-shop job on a girl who doesn’t need it but whatever, it’s Cosmo, it’s too be expected.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LCM5POTSHO74MUOQO6IAV4YUBE Jessica

It looks like they photoshopped the neckline and the sleeves off.  wtf?

      • understateddiva

        It really seems like it.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I think you are right – she wore the sleeves and they shopped them off.

    • MilaXX

I’ve love her since Real Woman Have Curves. She can do no wrong in my eyes.

    • http://twitter.com/Nanskatoon Nancy Skaggs

I question whether that’s even her actual body.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H3XBSNN3JLZWI4R2EPZ2BQYT5U Suzanne S

Exactly. Who knows what terrible things might be unleashed onto the world if they dared show what a celebrity really looked like these days. They photoshop the heck out of these pics and then make the body (and body-to-head) proportions look very odd and unnatural on most women.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H3XBSNN3JLZWI4R2EPZ2BQYT5U Suzanne S

PS-forgot to put quotes or some little ‘snark indicator’ around that first sentence (since I was being sarcastic), but that seems to be the prevailing sentiment re celebrities in print, especially magazines and magazine covers these days. (for them to be photoshopped to the point of being un-recognizeable)

    • j_anson

That model in that dress is kind of totally proving the point she’s making with “Anytime I walk into something apologetic or wondering if I’m good enough, I never get it. There’s a certain lack of ownership that people can detect. When I walk in and own it, that’s when I usually get it.”

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

model looks like she’s trying to figure out where she is.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H3XBSNN3JLZWI4R2EPZ2BQYT5U Suzanne S

I know that she’s been looking more fit lately, but honestly, these are the kind of photoshop jobs that irritate and annoy me. She barely resembles herself (something we end up having to say far too often in this type situation)

    • jmorino08

Is her mouth that big in real life? It can’t be, right?

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks incredible in that dress, but the sleeveless version definitely looks a little “Poison Groupie”.

    • Lisa Dugan

She looks fabulous.  Personally I prefer it without the sleeves for the cover.  Too much uninterrupted blue leopard.  Her arms looks great.

    • PeaceBang

Her hair and make-up are gorge. The pose is really weird (shades of “Jurassic Park” velociraptor head) and I don’t like the dress on her but for some strange reason I LOVE it on the model.

    • neofashionista

this is the BEST i have evry seen her look and the little excerpt of her interview just makes me love her more!!!!!!

    • BrightsideSusan

The last comment would have more impact if she had a no photoshopping clause.

    • e jerry powell

This is light-years better than that Photoshopped-to-shit Glamour cover, no?

    • kimmeister

She reminds me of Jordin Sparks, just less in-your-face.

    • TaurusKW

I bet some poor editorial assistant was fired for using blue print for the subtitle under “387 style savers.”  It disappears right into America’s blue dress.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

better to fire the temp who photoshopped her. no, scratch that. hang on. consider it scratched.
better to fire the art director/editor/publisher who told the temp to do what the temp did.
it’s not really the temps fault.
        it’s just a job.

        in other news:
she might actually prefer the one w/ sleeves too. she might actually have worn it for this shoot. i’m not actually sure that those are actually her arms. the [livin] end.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Stone/100001328135240 Mary Stone

the lack of sleeves is part an artifact of bad photoshop skin-tone cloning.  Look at the jacked neckline — dead giveaway.

    • guest2visits

I like it better on America.    Not really into bright blue leopard print – but she does look good in it.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I like the criss-cross draping, which has more emphasis without the sleeves.  I can’t get behind animal prints, but it’s D&G on a Cosmo cover, so what can you expect?

      She looks fabulous.

    • Contralto

      BAM!  She looks great.

    • unbornfawn

      She looks great!

    • ChristinaRi

      It’s sophisticated with the sleeves.

Without the sleeves, it’s just generic “hot dress.”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=713709401 Randy Noak

It looks like something Hilda would wear.

    • ccm800

they ALWAYS talk like this once they’re skinny, don’t they?  Dress looks like JCPenny

    • librarygrrl64

She looks much better in that dress than does the model in this instance. Go, America!
