Cate Blanchett in Proenza Schouler

Posted on October 16, 2012

Ugh. You know how you wake up late and you realize you don’t have any material put together for the site you publish with your significant other, and then the two of you run around mainlining Starbucks and shrieking at each other that you have to GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER because you also have a lunch date AND and a dentist appointment on the schedule, oh and could you please feed the fucking cats because their constant whining and meowing is going to drive you up the wall AND YOU’RE TRYING TO GET SHIT DONE so please, Mr. Jesus, please could you make this day go a little smoother than the inauspicious start that kicked it off?

Y’know? Like that?

Fortunately, Mr. Jesus created Cate Blanchett specifically for this purpose.

Cate Blanchett attends the ELLE’s 19th Annual Women In Hollywood Celebration in a Proenza Schouler dress paired with Roger Vivier clutch and pumps and Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

Proenza Schouler Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Nadja Bender

Because somehow, Cate Blanchett can wear pictures of swamps with grommets AND button candy attached to them, and look chic. And looking at a chic Cate Blanchett is how everyone should start their day, whether they publish a site with their significant other or not.

Thank you, Mr. Jesus.

I can’t decide if I think that dress is completely wackadoodle or completely cool. I don’t like the matchy bracelet, though.

    • In_Stitches

Wackadoodle and cool aren’t mutually exclusive adjectives, as exemplified by this…dress.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m torn between wackadoodle and cracktastic for that dress, but if any ladystar can pull it off, Cate Blanchett can.

    • twocee

Cool, only because of the wearer.  Anyone else (other than maybe Swinton) would look ridiculous.

      • Anne At Large

And cue the obligatory Zoe Saldana shoutout. Blanchett/Swinton/Saldana are my trifecta of “making wackadoodle look chic”.

        • PhD-level dress-wearers, all.

        • boomchicabowwow

EXACTLY!  Except I’ve lately been noticing that Solange Knowels (I KNOW!) is creeping up my list of fabulous “wackadoodle” clothes-wearers!

    • muzan-e

Completely cool until you get to the blue spots. Which are – which –

      I just can’t.  What even –

      • I like it. Pop Art meets Impressionism.

        • j_anson

          Yes! Pointillism, or something. 🙂

          • Haha I was thinking more Lichtenstein overlayed over an impressionist piece.

    • Melissa Brogan

Cate is definitely one of the few women who can pull off wackadoodle and cool simultaneously. Bowing down.

  • lmao “Mr. Jesus”

    • 3boysful

It makes me think of Judy Garland singing the “Dear Mr Gable . . .” intro to You Made Me Love You.

  • Reneesance

I absolutely love it, so much that I want to run out and attached grommets to all my skirts.  This may create problems.

    • DeborahJozayt

Don’t get your fingers in the line of fire and all will be right with the world.

  • 3boysful

That color blue looks magnificent against her face.

But I can’t say I love the pumps.  Find them a tad stubby.  I’d have gone heeled sandal with this.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Totally agree – the dress is wild, so the shoes are way to tame and boring by comparison.

  • It’s a horrible dress, the designer should be flogged, the runway model probably cries to her therapist about this, and yet Cate makes it look amazing. How does she do that?

  • This, for me, is a total WERQ moment. Nothing like a tall glass of Kate, to clear the head, and start the day right.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s an odd dress, but somehow Cate makes this WERQ.  Then again, I’ve loved her ever since I first saw her in Oscar and Lucinda with Ralph Fiennes.

      • For me, too. She is one of our shining actor lights, in a sea of mediocrity.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Who other than Cate could pull off being Galadriel,Elizabeth I AND Bob Dylan?  I rest my case.

          • And don’t forget her scary good Katherine Hepburn, in “the Aviator”.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I knew I’d left a significant role out-you saved me!

  • WERQ – and hope the dentist is OK, boys.

  • Sorry, my first thought was what season of Project Runway is this from? Exposed zipper, grommets? This silhouette is basic design mucked up with an fugly print and junk all over it. Expect more from QEl, Cate!

    • Janet B

At least the zipper isn’t sew onto the outside of the dress (I think).  I don’t like the print, the grommets or the blue button things at all, but somehow she manages to look pretty despite it all.

    • Sweetbetty

It looks like a combination of the “create your own fabric”, “candy store”, and “hardware store” challenges.  And the back shoulders need a dart.

  • mbelchic

The more I looked at it the better I liked it-

  • I’m loving the expression of the woman she’s talking to.

  • hmariec19

The woman she’s talking to cannot handle the fabulous.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Somehow if I were ever to meet Cate, I suspect I’d be reduced to gibbering idiot in a flash.

      • nancylee61

I don’t understand this. She is a great actress, but she is just an actress. Another human being, just like you. I would never be intimidated meeting an actor/actress, someone who plays for a living. Even meeting the President, it is just another person.

        • julnyes

Meeting someone whose work you respect, or whose creative output has had an emotional effect on your life can be overwhelming for some people – nothing difficult to grok about that in my opinion.

      •  Oh Robbie Myers has dealt with enough celebrities not to be bothered. I prefer to think her expression is due to the scintillating bit of gossip Cate has just whispered to her (probably something steamy about the cast of the Hobbit).

  • leftcoastpickle

That is the coolest dress of all time! Love the blue dots and grommets and the ladder and the whole thing. Amazing. She looks great, and that dress is just the best, a work of art, and wearable!

  • MarissaLG

I never really like grommets, but these are just subtle enough that they work. Lovely dress!

  • EEKstl

And let us say: Amen.  Love the dress, and of course, beyond any shadow of a doubt: Luv Huh!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Fabulous.  All shall love her and despair.

    • My favorite line from all three of those movies!

(edited to add: why do I no longer have a name? weird. -Sara L.)

  • lehen

she looks amazing, but from straight on those shoes are hiddy.

  • That is a very strange dress, but I kind of like it.

    I’d kill for that bracelet.

  • pookiesmom

The dress looks so normal until you actually *look* at it and notice all the weird shit tacked on. She looks fab, though.

But…is that supposed to be a person on her left butt cheek? Please say it isn’t!

  • Love her. She’s captivating. And I love the simple shoes with the dress.

  • VicksieDo

I absolutely love this look.  What a great way to start the day.

  • Frank_821

Is that a samurai on the back of the dress? near the hem. or someone rural person in a kimono? hard to tell

    • Jennifer Jacobsen-Wood

I was wondering the same thing. Paging up, you can see a person on the front of the runway version… but it looks like a person in a hard hat.
      Wack-a-doo, but I love it.

    • I think it’s the same guy as on the front of the dress.

  • She just makes me so happy.

  • BazoDee

OMG – I love love love this. Hate hate hate her makeup though.

  • e jerry powell

From a distance, the top looks like it’s quilted.

The goat hooves look like flats from the front.  I don’t like flats with this dress.  I want different shoes on her feet.

  • m0r0

Gorge! Loved it from afar. Confused by it up close. But striking nonetheless.

  • ballerinawithagun

Love the grommets, love the colors. Perhaps it is just that I produced so many boat neck, cap sleeve designs in the 80’s and 90’s that it is hurting my eyes. I guess it is better than having extraneous exposed darts and oragami folds!

  • I love that dress so much, but I wish she hadn’t worn black pumps.

  • Vickiefantastico

She is absolute perfection. Who else could make that dress look so effortless? No one, that’s who.

  • love the dress but what is that spot on the back? a person? all i can think of is that it looks like tiger woods on the golf course! dress would have been perfect but for that.

  • Corazon Nunez

Hah! At first I was like, “Whoa, pretty!” then “Is that button candy on the top and button holes on the bottom?” and then “. . . . huh.”

  • Anathema_Device

Print+grommets+button dealiebobs usually=overkill, but of course Cate makes it work. Would have preferred a metallic or gray suede shoe with this, but that its a mere quibble.

And honestly? I don’t know how you two do it. I don’t even have time read this blog as religiously as I’d like to!!! You need a small stable of guest bloggers you know, trust, and love to lighten your load once a month or so!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

A metallic or gray suede shoe would have been fab with the dress-just the right touch to play off those eye-popping colors.

  • tereliz

I don’t get the vitriol for this dress. It was one of my favorites from the PS spring collection. Of course, Cate makes the model look anemic and consumptive in comparison, but J’ADORE CETTE ROBE! Love the classic silhouette offset by the grommets and blue dots and the wacky print. I would have gone sleeker with the shoes, but her hair and makeup is perfect. It gives life to the somewhat stodgy Van Cleef and Arpels jewelry, too!

  • VeryClaire

Love the dress but I’d love it better if it didn’t have that too-stiff looking neckline. What’s with that?

  • She is just majestic.

  • MilaXX

I like everything but the bows on the shoes. The dress also reminds me of those dresses the tech lady on those commercials Joe Zee does during  All On the Line where you can upload your own fabric for a custom made dress.

  • Love!

  • WANT that dress.
    That is all.

  • mhleta

What is the photograph of? It looks like a man in a hard hat getting ready to climb a ladder up a tree. Is this a lumberjack? Interesting blend of art and fashion, a tricky piece that she is wearing quite well. I hope it ends up in a museum as part of a fashion exhibit because I’m really intrigued. Great post for a rush job!

  • SapphoPoet

Agree the dress is whackadoodle, but Cate makes it work. Love the shoes.

Good luck at the dentist. 🙂

  • Violina23

Wow I kinda love this and I’m not sure I have any right to…

  • crash1212

I love that dress and Cate is majestic.

  • RzYoung

I could cut a bitch for that bracelet!! She looks fabo 🙂

  • GorgeousThings

    I love Grommits – er – grommets.

    • Anathema_Device

I agree. I couldn’t manage to work a Wensleydale joke into my comment, unfortunately.

  • I have an unhealthy obsession with all of the photo print dresses from this collection. This one isn’t my favorite of them, but it’s still great. And I can’t think of anybody better to wear it!

  • TAGinMO

Love the dress, and was stunned to see the profile and back views of the shoes, because in the first shot, they look like something Queen Elizabeth would wear. Ah, camera angles.

  • Lizzyisi

Amazing. Both this and the Paltrow thing are blondes in overly complicated dresses. This dress manages to be edgy, sexy and glamorous and flattering on a woman it’s easy to flatter, but the Kors on Paltrow just looks like an overly complicated dress on a woman who is skinny for a living.

  • That is one long torso

  • annrr

Is that a little jockey climbing up a ladder? I am digging it, but in person I would find myself staring at the little people.

  • Le_Sigh

Love that woman.  Thank you Mr. Jesus indeed.

  • Ann Erickson

WOW. Wow. My eyes are happy.

  • Beautiful colors on her.

  • If anyone else wore that dress, I’d be laughing my fool head off. Somehow, Cate makes it work. Wackadoodle chic.

ETA – Though I wonder if I’d still feel this way if that was a Stella piece.

  • jw_ny

Pretty.  Cate can pull it off like few others can.

(I kinda don’t like the black shoes with this dress; they’re focus pulling. However, if Cate thinks they’re right, then I yield to her better judgement) 😉

  • AuntieAnonny

I like the dress, but everything is wrong. Wrong jewelry, wrong shoes, wrong hair.

I would kill for that bracelet though.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Queen Blanchett, once again making the model look like a rookie. LUV. HUH.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Basically, a bunch of random crap thrown together in a completely artful way to make a dress that only Kate can wear with perfect accessories. Well done.

  • l_c_ann

    Dear Lord,
A dress for standing up, only.
Sitting on a single 3/4″ grommet is unpleasant; that skirt would be the worst.  And even worse for anyone who qualifies as slim to skinny.
Great look, but remember the princess and the pea.

  • Amen my brothers.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

She’s lovely, positively lovely, who’d believer the loveliness of her…

  • Is that the pope on the back of her dress?!

    •  I think it might be Prince Charles playing polo?

  • Dhammadina

  • snarkykitten

    She’s wearing Lothlorien.

  • This is a case of loving everything about the look EXCEPT for the dress. Are those amber earrings with a jade bracelet? Brilliant!

  • piecesofconfetti

I love her, but I hate these shoes with that dress.

  • kschwarting

I adore la Cate–and I wish I had her anti-aging secrets, not to mention a fraction of her talent.  Don’t love the black accessories with the dress, but she looks dead chic.

  • kategs

The only person on the planet, no wait, the universe who could wear this dress with such aplomb.  I am, however, a bit unsure about the shoes.  They just don’t look quite right to me.

  • Is that a ladder going up her butt?  I agree, this is a crack-influenced dress if there ever was one, but the colors are fantastic on her and she manages to make it look wearable.  The shoes are not doing her any favors–too clunky & heavy.  love that her hair is all tied back and not competing with the dress.

  • juliamargaret

I love the dress. Totally creative and the effect is beautiful. Looks like earth and sky. The ombre effect with both the grommets and the blue dots is pretty and they play off each other beautifully. And Cate makes it look great.

  • guest2visits

Beautiful and unique dress, she looks wonderful in it – the shoes feel alittle heavy for it though.

  • She is such a fucking BOSS.

  • Verascity

She’s destroying the model. I LOVE this look on her.

  • She is the picture of serene, cool colors, elegance, striking textures and — oh, that appears to be a tiny portrait of Snoop Dogg below her toned bottom. Huh. I’m going to have to think about this one.

  • Judy_J

    I’m in awe.  Truly fabulous.

  • CeeQ

Cate: “OK bitches relax, I’m here. Get your act together while I hold down the fort.”

I love her so much it’s irrational. Her hair is amazing and so is everything else she’s wearing! Love the shoes =) and is that Cynthia Nixon??

  • nancylee61

I love the dress, even though it looks like there are miners on it. I love the colors and the grommets, and I love Cate B. Too bad my viewing pleasure was ruined with the pics of Gwynnie after this post. Ugh.

  • Imasewsure

I was thinking it would be absolutely perfect if it had more traditional shape at the top like a sleeveless look or cap sleeves… but I am boring… love this. She looks great.

  • susan6

That dress has too much going on.  I just want to stare at it and notice it all.  As a result, I completely ignore the dresshanger (whether it’s Cate or the model).  However, when I look from further away (at the point where I can’t see all the detail), then I can see that it’s Cate in a cool dress.

I dunno.  I think this dress crosses the line between “cool, flattering fashion” and “a complex piece of art that someone is wearing as clothing.”

  • kmk05

Love her, love the dress, irrationally HATE those shoes.

  • mommyca

oh… I wish I had this picture hanging somewhere in my kitchen this morning when I was running around like crazy trying to get me and my daughter out the door…. love me some Cate in a hectic morning!!! 🙂

  • This dress hurts my eyes……

  • this is such a cool (how about that for a fancy fashion word) dress…I wish the shoulder/back area was tailored better…or am I just fashion ignorant?

  • mmc2315

She’s beautiful, but that dress is fifty kinds of ugly.

  • maggiemaybe

That dress is super hiddy… and she looks great because she is a magical unicorn.

  • kimmeister

    That dress is riveting. *rimshot*

LOVE the bracelet.  Think that the velvet pumps are an odd choice to go with this look.

  • Call me Bee

That is the oddest dress seen here in a lo-o-o-oong time ( save for that weird thing Chloe/alter-whose-name-I-forgot was wearing yesterday…)  but it’s on Cate, which makes it awesome.

    I bow down.

  • formerlyAnon

This is a very interesting look, which is good, especially (I imagine) when one spends a significant chunk of one’s life choosing/finding people to choose for you ensemble after ensemble in which you are photographed for all posterity and then will never wear again.

There’s something armor-like, stiff and ungraceful about the shoulders and upper chest. This would be a bad thing for people who choose very few expensive outfits and then wear them repeatedly and (if they are photographed) have photos of themselves in said outfits reappear in family albums so that great nieces they barely know can snicker at them.

But Ms. Blanchett is in the former category, and this emphasizes her tiny waist, so all is good.

    • formerlyAnon

P.s. I paid my dentist 700.00 yesterday. Hope it goes better for you.

  • librarygrrl64

Not to my taste, but she looks fabulous!

  • JanieS

She really is a magical Elven Queen. It’s the only possible explanation.

  • Goddamn the woman is fabulous. Is this a crazy dress? Yes? Does she still like like a goddess? Absolutely.

  • She looks AH-MAZING! Love this, head to toe. Miss Cate makes a weird dress looks FAB.

  • Larkin21

  • RocknRollmom

Oh I adore her.  Just astonishing.  In the first pic I hated the shoes as they look weird and stump.  Side view is much better.  A gorgeous heel. But I think a classic point toed stilleto would look better.  I will sacrifice and take those shoes away for her.  Love the jewelry.  If I could be one fashion icon in the world—well her or Tilda, tough call.

  • Susan Crawford

Only Cate the Great could wear such a dress. I love the basic cut of it, and the fit is divine, but there is a hella LOT going on in that frock: Grommets and prints and buttony stuff . . . oh, my! But here’s the legend who can rock this dress and not break a sweat. Love the Roger Vivier accessories, but I would have traded the green bracelet for an understated gold cuff.

  • She’s fabulous.

  • B_C_J

The fabric looks like a science project and the silhouette is matronly. Ms. Blanchett is to be lauded for wearing interesting garments but this one was a failure. The shoes on the other hand are amazing.

  • It makes my eyes hurt, but she would look good in a burlap sack.

  • I love it! The shape of the dress is fab and I love the intricacy.

  • Trisha26

Love her. But not this outfit. At all.

  • glennethph

Something’s not working with the makeup.

  • S_Swift

Maybe it’s like a rorshach test? I see a man holding a spear next to a ladder to her left breast. What does that say about me?

  • granddelusion

    Shes all kinds of awesome.

  • This is fucking fabulous. I’m calling it a WERQ. I hate it on the model, but on Cate it’s one of the best looks I’ve seen in quite a while.

  • Qitkat

This is krazy kreative. Cate looks awesome and has the usual attitude to pull it off.
But ouch much to sit down?

  • BeeBeauNYC

She rules the god damn world as far as I’m concerned. This bitch is bowing down!

  • LeifBallard

Love the blue grommets!!! It’s def chic but I think I would prefer a different print with the grommets

  • I was so excited about this look – until I saw the grommets were actual holes. Ick, no. Textbook example of something being overworked. But she still looks stunning.

  • Zippypie

Cate can wear a tablecloth punctured with grommets and look spectacular.  Now that’s a goddess of fashion!

  • Weird as hell, the shoes are a trifle clunky, and yes, she is made of fabulous.

  • lucasuk82

The bracelet is so beautiful – she’s really pulling the entire look off.

  • mayavaly

Absolutely adore everything, but I’m not quite getting the story with the shoes. They’re throwing the look a little off-balance for me.

  • margaret meyers

All those many, many ideas and THEY ALL WORK.  That’s a great dress and she does a great job wearing it.  I love the use of black-hole-black accessories.

  • quiltrx

Love this dress!  It has a great shape, very flattering.  And I had a long blouse that had a picture of a garden scene on the front when I was in college–I loved that thing–so of course I like the idea of it.  I think I could live without the blue candy, but I really think the grommets take it somewhere special and different.  I bet they make it move nice, too.

  • Kelly Ridings

I BOW DOWN to her.  That dress looks amazing on her– full stop.

  • I think this is very lovely despite the man escaping her bum.

  • Olivia Snyder-Spak

what no WERQ? lets not get stingy boys!

  • Cate FTW!

  • anotherkate

Her skin is so gorgeous. And that wacky dress is a great color for her. I hardly even notice the wacky!

  • roadtrip1000

I would like this dress a lot more if it didn’t have the helmeted miner with ladder motif.

  • demidaemon

The “Thank you, Mr. Jesus” lines remind me of Melissa Gorga, of RHONJ fame (or infamy?).

  • lizlemonglasses

While you’re at it, Mr. Jesus, please let me come back as Cate Blanchett in my next life. kthnxbye

  • I. FREAKING. LOVE. THIS. DRESS. on her, at least. I would wear it so hard as well. It’s refreshing and interesting.

But I don’t like the shoes.

  • cleep1000

The silhouette is gorgeous on her, but I just can’t with the blue dots.

  • sweet_potato

I love it, this is absolutely stunning!

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I love the dress – so unusual and quirky, and Kate pulls it off beautifully.  Don’t love the shoes – well, I do, but not with this dress.  How tiny IS her waist, anyway??  She’s just flawless and magnificent.  Love.Her.

  • Allison Woods

Looks ok from a distance, but up close…WTF?

  • ccm800

     that dress is frikking awesome!!!!!!!
