Cameron Diaz for Esquire UK

Posted on October 03, 2012

Sometimes, we find ourselves wishing that Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn would ride down from heaven in a chariot drawn by unicorns and slap the shit out of some of the ladystars of today for buying into the idea that they need to do soft porn photo shoots to maintain their careers.

Cameron Diaz is featured in the November 2012 issue of Esquire UK magazine photographed by Terry Richardson.

On feeling good at 40: “For the first time in my life I’m content. I’m so excited. Getting older is the best part of life. Like, I know more than I’ve ever known. I have gratitude. I know myself better. I feel more capable than ever. And as far as the physicality of it – I feel better at 40 than I did at 25.”

On marriage: “It just wasn’t the thing I was drawn to. I certainly didn’t want it in my 20s. Or my 30s.”

On having children: “I don’t need to have the children in my life be a part of my literal flesh. And anyway, there’s still a possibility of that, I ain’t that old. I’m feeling very… capable.”

This shit just makes us sad. There’s nothing wrong with showing skin or looking sexy, but someone like Cameron Diaz has long since proven that there’s more to her than her fuckability. Put on some pants, Cam. And close your legs.

Terry Richardson is gross.

Oh this is just sad. Especially those shots with her legs wide open. Just why?

    • mmc2315

      Yep, that second shot is….bad.

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Really, REALLY bad.  I agree with blogless, she definitely comes off as pathetic and desperate.  Yuck.

      • homofascist

She looks like an inflatable doll…

    •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Yes Cam, we can see you’re feeling very… “capable”

    • PrunellaV

Her comments about turning 40 come off as whistling past the graveyard.

      • Glammie

No kidding.  I remember when she was young and imperfectly beautiful–and that’s what made her so appealing.  Now it’s Botox, bad fake boobs and this increasingly harsh trampy look.  It hurts to see it.  I know she was never the sharpest of actresses, but she had this really nice likeable quality.  Despite the legs, it was never about being a bombshell.

I feel like she doesn’t get the reason for her earlier huge appeal–i.e. that she’d be fun.  And, unless she suddenly marries–adopt-o-baby in the next four years if not sooner.  Babies want you and don’t care if you gain five pounds and have creases around the eyes.

This kind of spread–trying that hard to look young and hot makes you seem old.

    • julesj

      good analysis

  • holzfaellen

She doesn’t really look comfortable in most of the photos. Understandably so.

  • mellorcr

Pathetic!  I recall the days when something like this would END a career!  Not everything about that time was good, but at least we hadn’t got to the point where pornstars were to be emulated.

    • AudreysMom

Poor Cammie. Poor, poor Cammie. This is more than sad, this is offensive to aging women. She needs to take a page from stars like Susan Sarandon who’ve not only aged in front of the camera, but who have continued to show the world that woman continue to be sexy as hell… without needing to resort to a ‘spread’ like this.

      • Little_Olive

And show it to Nicole Kidman and start a support group together.

    • Simon P

Pathetic? What is this? The 1940s? Women are free now. Did you not get the memo?

    • Judih1

  • Dorothy Damage

I hate Terry Richardson so much. Can his career just die already? These pictures make me incredibly sad for Diaz. And embarrassed.

    • Nicholas

The onus is just as much on Esquire.

      • Dorothy Damage

Definitely, and I’m not a fan of the magazine either. I think Richardson and his pervy, bad photography needs to to be banned from the fashion/mag world altogether, though I know it will never happen because he’s such a big name.

      • Sartorial_She

The onus is just as much on Diaz!!

        It’s all stomach churning.

        • Nicholas

Well, I’m lead to believe she didn’t hand-pick the guy to shoot it, since he was guaranteed to do it in the most tasteless way possible.

Diaz is responsible for signing on to do the spread, but it is Esquire and GQ’s fault Richardson has a career.

I cannot for the life of me imagine someone who says “…but I’ll only do it if Richardson shoots it!”

But who the hell knows these days, I guess. Maybe they reckoned his shit-tastic photos would sell better. I still think anyone else would have been better. Maybe he’s cheap. Trying to understand how he has a career is to gaze into the abyss.

          • kryten8

Harper’s Bazaar has been featuring several editorials by him an issue. They even have a fun little “photo by terry richardson” logo they use with those infuriating glasses. It is frustrating, because I like everything else about their redesign, and I think I have to unsubscribe.

      • Melinda Mary

Ummm, as always the onus is on the consumer.  It’s called supply and demand and he and she are filling the demand.

    • Little_Olive

He IS gross. But let’s not forget that she must have final call. And she approved.

The thing is, when are these people going to realize that this in-your-face shit is the opposite of sexy?

I have to say, I took a trip through California recently. I felt like an old fart when we went out one night in Santa Barbara and I was the ONLY girl with pants instead of a gyno-short, tight, plunging-cleavage dress. And where I come from we dance fully clothed, looking at your dance partner instead of dry-humping them. And it can be damn sexy.

      • mshesterp

Except that what many men find sexy and what women find sexy are often two different things.  I’m guessing a lot of guys will see this spread (literally and figuratively) and think it’s fantastic, better than playboy.  And that’s what she’s going for–and she knows that’s what she’s going to get with Richardson.  GQ/Esquire know their demographic–you don’t think Lea Michele’s GQ high school spread wasn’t a big hit with dudes?  It’s just sad that Diaz buys into needing to do this to keep her career going.

Frankly this stuff is thisclose for being nsfw (I work in a library)–it’s just so bottom-barrel and suggestive.  I have no issue that Cameron wants to look hard-core sex kitten for herself (her body is ridiculous), it’s just when it’s for Esquire it screams desperate.

        *sigh* Oh, Cameron.

        • mozzer0906

Great points.  To a woman seeing a man with a barely open shirt and his head tilted back his on fire.  For a man they need t&a a lot of times.  I totally agree that it is bottom-barrell

        • mbelchic

I promise you my husband would not find this very sexy-

      • Dorothy Damage

She approved, but a large part of me suspects it’s a continued effort to remain in lead roles instead of being shoved into minor friend/mother roles (or getting pushed out of roles completely). So it really doesn’t feel like much of a choice- if a pretty, well-established actress like Diaz still has to submit to quite horrible photoshoots like some unknown b-movie starlet in order to remain relevant, what does it say about women and the power they wield in Hollywood? So yeah, it was her call, but a lot of famous women have to do the same pole dance to maintain their career when men of similar status don’t. And that’s depressing. It’s not sexy, it’s disturbing.

        • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I disagree.  Cameron Diaz has been working in this industry for 20+ years.  She makes huge amounts of money per movie, and she’s made a lot of movies.  Assuming she’s invested wisely, she is set for life.  There are plenty of actresses who do NOT resort to this type of crap to “maintain their career”.  While she may do this to continue to get ingenue roles (for which she is too old), she does not need to do this to keep getting jobs.

          • Sartorial_She

             Exactly this, my fellow Seattleite!

        • Glammie

But they don’t all do it.  Julianne Moore never has–she’s done some real skin-revealing stuff, but it’s not tawdry like this.  Sigourney Weaver hasn’t, neither has Susan Sarandon–and these are all actresses who have had post-40 careers.  (And, no, of course Meryl Streeep hasn’t–but her career works differently than other actesses.)

I think this kind of thing plays against you–everybody knows that you’re not the hot, young thing.  Doing total sex kitten just reminds people of your no longer being 20.  Sexy post-40 means you’ve got to show a little class, a little mystery and come off as relaxed in your own skin.

          • librarygrrl64

I suspect that Diaz has never been offered the types of roles that these actresses have. She’s a decent comedic actress, but the others you mention have more serious drama chops. Maybe she thinks all she can do/all she will be offered are sex kitten/cougar roles in rom-coms? Sad.

          • luciaphile

She’s not in their league so her options are more limited.

          • librarygrrl64

Yes, I agree, and that’s a much more succinct way of putting it. Brevity: not my strong suit. 😉

      • Amelia Logan

Ew it so creeps me out when guys want to dance with my back. What’s wrong with my face, nothing! My face is awesome. Gross.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I agree.  But that’s Hollywood; Diaz is 40 now and in Hollywood that is considered “old” for a woman.  The only reason I can imagine she agreed to these dreadful pictures (by the ever sleazy Mr. Richardson) is to show the Powers That Be (mostly men) in Hollywood that she is still hot and thus ensure more movie roles.

      • Dorothy Damage

Yeah, that’s why I feel sad for her, because it’s not much of a choice- do shoots like this despite a quite long career in film or lose her livelihood. Women need to be treated better in Hollywood, especially older women.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

It is sad, and honestly, no matter how hard Cameron Diaz works on her face and body, there is always, always, going to be a younger woman just waiting to step into those roles. Sad.

          • librarygrrl64

And who will do it for less money.

      • Sartorial_She

Oh for fuck’s sake. Did anyone really think Cameron Diaz was no longer hot??

And my ire is not directed at you…

    • Veronika Kaufmann

Terry Richardson is such a sleaze bag.

  • Dominy Marveux-Garbeau

God bless you Tom and Lorenzo for making us feel sane.

  • Dominy Marveux-Garbeau

God bless you Tom and Lorenzo for making us feel sane.

  • MilaXX

UGH! First of all the pictures are bad and kind of low rent. It’s also a bit degrading to have a photo shoot like this accompany an interview that talks about being 40. It’s like saying she has to act like a ho in order to get attention now that she’s 40. No to it all.

    • Little_Olive

Yeah, the whole thing is one big oxymoron.

  • neofashionista

i wholeheartedly agree with u gentlemen
    this is gross

  • SistaT

My first reaction to these photos was “Ew”.  I’m embarrassed for her.  I want to run up to her and give her a trench coat to put on.  There is no reason in the world for her to be squatted down, presenting her hooha with a lascivious look on her face.  How in the world does that say “Happy to be 40 and feeling great about myself”?  It looks desperate and sad.  I cringed.

  • NurseEllen

You would think this kind of [almost literal] pole dancing would be the purview of a 20-something starlet.  I really expect someone who’s 40, “content for the first time in her life” and “more capable than ever” to realize that this is really degrading.  Of course if she wants hot private photos that’s another thing, but Esquire?  Really, Cam, this is beneath you.

    • luciaphile

I think the photo spread is gross, but as others have pointed out she’s 40 and is probably being offered fewer roles and is now considered in the mother/old category.

  • lbl

“Terry Richardson is gross.” Everything that needs to be said. Ugh.

  • Kiltdntiltd

    Vuhl Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

  • EditKitten

Taking away the ridiculousness of it, this just isn’t in her wheelhouse, is it? It just doesn’t work for her.

    • formerlyAnon

      That’s totally MY take.

  • PastryGoddess

    And Jebus said AMEN!

    yes Terry Richardson is Gross

  • Dot

“I don’t need to have the children in my life be a part of my literal flesh.” I have no idea what this oddly-phrased sentence means. And talking about marriage, being 40, and having kids — what bizarre interview questions to accompany these pathetic porno pics.

    • lbl

I took is as she doesn’t need any future children to be biological, she’s cool with adoption.

      • Dot

That makes sense now that I reread it. I guess I was hung up on the phrasing.

    • Lori

I suspect she’s saying that she’d be fine adopting and/or that she can have children in her life without being their mother (being an aunt or whatever). I applaud her for that. Everyone has to make their own decision about kids and a woman isn’t broken or a failure if she doesn’t have them, but the gross photos really do undermine the message.

Why does anyone still agree to do shoots with Richardson? There just aren’t that many people whose careers can be enhanced by an air of low rest sleeze, which is all he has to offer.

  • Paigealicious

Terry Richardson needs a new shtick.

    • Tadiana

Terry Richardson needs to not be hired by any magazine more respectable than Hustler.

    • marlie

Terry Richardson needs to just go away.

  • Jennifer Jacobsen-Wood

This harkens back to the recent Nicole Kidman shots. Yes, they both have great bodies and are beautiful, and I can understand the pressure to prove that they are sexy despite Hollywood age-ism, but isn’t there a better way to do it?

    • ChiliP

These shots actually make the Nicole Kidman shots look tasteful by comparison. If that doesn’t say everything that needs to be said about this spread, I don’t know what does.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

At least the Nicole Kidman shots were part of the promo for her new movie where she is playing that sort of character — I’m not aware of Cammie having any movies on the horizon where she is playing a skank — have I missed something?

  • mjude

its embarrassing really & so desperate looking.

  • makeityourself

I’m not sure these women do this to sustain their careers. From my POV, it looks like they are trying to maintain their self esteem, as backward as that sounds. They need to convince themselves, and you too, that they still “have it.”

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I agree-and unfortunately, in a very short time we’ll be treatd to photos of Cameron Diaz in which her face will have that plasticized look that screams filler/botox/goats serum/whatever the anti-aging treat of the day is.

  • schadenfreudelicious

these are one step up from an American Apparel photo spread…why does Terry Richardson still have a career??

    • Alloy Jane

These are not one step up from an American Apparel spread.  They’re two steps below.  Why?  Because amateur photographers take those pictures.  Pictures of employees by employees.  This asshole has been doing this “porn-tography” for years.  YEARS.  It blows my mind.

  • miagain

    OH jESUS

  • Christina Diaz

before i finished scrolling down/reading, i was thinking, “terry richardson is a hack.”  “gross” is an apt description too.  ugh.  this is exactly what perpetuates the notion that nearly naked=sexy.  sexy is just so much more than that and it makes me angry and sad that female celebrities either buy into it or think this is the only way to keep themselves relevant in this jersey shore/kardashian world we’re living in.

    • crackineggs

Exactly.  This makes me mad as hell.

  • janetjb

I hate that Terry Richardson is one of the few photographers I know by name and style.

    • ecallaw1977

       Amen to this.

  • Jennifer McClory

Terry Richardson is basically a pervert with a camera.  Why, why, why do they keep letting him in the same room with all these starlets?

    • afabulous50

      At 40 she’s hardly a star”let”.

      • marlie

True, she’s not a “starlet”, but Richardson is still a pervert. It says something about his (lack of) skill when the first thought that comes to mind with ANY of his photos, and with ANY starlet is “pervert.”

  • Profreader

I’m more of a lurker these days, less of a commenter but EEUUUUGGGHHHHHHH Terry Richardson!! ENOUGH. Flat-lit, cheap-porn-inspired, classless, style-less snapshots. WHO THINKS THIS IS A GOOD IDEA? Bleaggghhh. T&L, you nailed it. Makes me sad. And T Richardson is just gross.

  • miagain

When you can see her butt cheek from the front….SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG!!!

    • marlie

Good lord, I thought the same thing.

      • mozzer0906

All I thought was “thank goodness that wasn’t a lip”.  Seriously honey, if people have to pause and wonder if your vag lips are hanging out in a shot, it is not a good shot.

        • Sara Munoz Munoz

          LMAO!!!! (Because it’s true)

  • afabulous50

You know how you guys feel about Taylor Swift?  THAT’s how I feel about this one…

  • unbornfawn

    This was a bad idea.

  • Tanya Wade

Well, I’m glad she’s feeling “capable” of having children. And why not? Certainly in photos two and four she’s assumed a few good delivery positions from the old days!

I have a former boss whose son “interned” with Terry R., and she’s so proud. Which shows you what kind of person she is. Yuck.

    • Sara Munoz Munoz

Yes, I’d like to think the placement of text & photo was on purpose. :)
Like, “See, watch me assume the position!”

  • Gotham Tomato

She needs to hit the symbols!

But I’m wondering if this isn’t more screw you A-Rod than career maintanence. But yes, Terry Richardson is gross. But so much of the current state of photography is like that of reality shows– it’s about being gross or boringly shocking (or shockingly boring).

  • Anathema_Device

This isn’t sexy at all. It is a woman doing standard porny poses in standard porny attire. Ugh.

  • Yulie29

I can get why some people let Terry Richardson photograph them, but Cameron is famous and successful enough to say no. If she feels as good about yourself as she says she does, she definitely should have said no – because this is not the way to show it.

    Richardson is indeed gross.

  • BazoDee

    “Terry Richardson is gross.”
Can I get an AMEN! WOW these are almost painful to look at.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

Terry Richardson is SO gross. In the first picture she looks pissed and in the second she looks drugged. I can smell the self esteem issues from here.

  • Nicholas

If Diaz still has a publicist, s/he needs to be fired out of a cannon straight into space.

    • kimmeister

I just imagined a scene out of WIPEOUT.  Thanks for the lulz!

  • Pants_are_a_must

I literally went “oh Cameron Diaz, you sad human being” when I saw the thumbnail on your main page.

I want Terry Richardson to fuck off somewhere and never come back.

  • kikisayshi

Eww, she looks like Courtney Love.

    • marlie

And that’s not a comparison that I can imagine ANY woman wants to be made about her.

  • marlie

Agree 100% – Terry Richardson IS gross.

The thing with these photos, and with Richardson in general, is that there’s absolutely nothing even remotely tasteful here. There’s nothing that indicates that someone with a professional eye took these photos. And Cammy looks slutty and trashy, not sexy and sultry.

    • RebeccaKW

Yes.  If she wanted to take some sexy photos in her underwear, there are more tasteful ways of doing it than in an empty room, full-frontal leg spread position.  Or bent over a stool position.

  • Susan Mayer

    “photographed by Terry Richardson”

    Of course.

  • Imasewsure

    Terry Richardson is gross. Amen

  • Little_Olive

This is not soft porn. Shannon Tweed (was that her name?) would not have agreed to this. It’s downright porn and it’s pathetic.

Also, to quote La Nina, it’s not aesthetically pleasing.

    • ecallaw1977

Isn’t Shannon Tweed the Kiss guy’s wife?  I think there is a porn star with at least a similar name, though…

ETA: After Googling, I see that Shannon Tweed is both the Kiss guy’s wife AND a “mainstream erotica” star. Learn something new every day…

  • gillian holroyd

“For the first time in my life I’m content.”
Has there ever been an actress interview without this statement?

  • Nancy K.

I never thought I would ever say this, but I feel sorry for Cameron Diaz….okay I’m over it. She and those who advise her somehow thought this would be hot, sexy and cutting edge and instead it just reeks of desperation. She agreed to it, so it’s on her.

  • MoHub

Are we sure this is Esquire and not Hustler?

    • Alloy Jane

I’m pretty sure Hustler uses better photographers. And at least porn models tend to look cheerful.

  • NCDFan

These are terrible. She looks awful, none of it is about her it’s just about a body. I’ll watch for this photographer so I’ll know what photos to skip.

  • jennmarie19

Yeah, she looks really “content.” Such bullshit. As with Nicole Kidman, she’s in a position where she doesn’t have to do this kind of stuff, and yet there she is. Sigh.

  • formerlyAnon

    Everything you said.

Which is why I struggle with the philosophical position that being sexually provocative in a manner traditionally held to be demeaning is actually empowering for women. Because while I’m sure that’s true for some women, I think for others it makes them think they are proving something  (which they really don’t need to prove) by being sexually provocative in those ways & then leads to the idea that they aren’t truly empowered unless they do so.

Where Ms. Diaz falls in that tortured paragraph, I don’t know.

IMO: She doesn’t have enough booty for some of those poses and overall this strikes me as a rather mechanical, un-sexy exercise.

    • marlie

I can’t quite articulate why I feel this, but this photoshoot is NOT about a woman embracing her body and her sexuality. I get that for some women and in some cases, that may be the right thing for them to do. But THIS, for Cammy, is NOT it.

    • sanja_ramic

I think I get what you’re saying, and I completely agree. I’m also really getting sick of this idea that overt sexuality or being sexually provocative is empowering for women, maybe that’s because all my Classics and Ancient History classes have taught me that misogyny is rooted in the idea that a woman’s intrinsic value is in her body as opposed to her mind (like men). From my understanding women have traditionally been considered as more ‘bodily’ (that includes more sexual) whereas men have always had control of the higher faculties, which is an idea that I don’t see being challenged enough. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with sexual empowerment I just wish it would stop being the focus, I want to see women celebrated for their creativity, their intelligence, their talent, in short their minds, not just their fabulous bodies. Rant over and my apologies for hijacking your comment formerlyAnon.

  • kimmeister

Great, now they’re even giving Cameron Diaz babyheads.

  • Lily

Ugh why? Not why to Cam, because lord knows she’s pressured into this shit.
Terry Richardson is the scum between my toes.

  • Julia Fox

I am all for a woman wanting to sex it up a bit. Good for her if she wants to show some skin. However, these just reek of desperation. She hasn’t done much career wise lately and her ex is getting married… looks like she is saying “look at me! Im still here!”
I have never liked her much anyway though

  • AlexisPayne

I won’t lie, I like one or two of the black and whites but otherwise everything else looks forced and desperate. Terry Richardson’s style is not suited for actresses past the age of 30. For an article about being comfortable and happy in your 40’s, in those photos (especially the one with her legs open and the leather jacket) she’s giving serious “Are you f**king kidding me?” face.

Cammie, you should have said no.

    • rawrgrowlrawr

Terry Richardson’s style isn’t suited for actresses of any age. His photography is abysmal and his portrayal of women is demeaning. I have no respect for that man.

  • YoungSally

It’s Terry Richardson…..I don’t think he does any other type of photos.

That said, let’s hope there aren’t any cameo shots with he and Cameron “frolicking”

  • alyce1213

Terry Richardson perpetuates a vulgar and demeaning image of women, with all the artificial “sexy” trappings.
So many buy into this, it’s great to have a haven of sanity here.

  • MoHub

    Makes Madonna look practically Amish.

  • Ali

This is as sad as the Nicole Kidman one a few weeks ago. Seriously, lady stars, you deserve better than this.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s not as if there aren’t good role models for Diaz, etal-Helen Mirren, Susan Sarandon, Jeanne Moreau come to mind.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

You know when you have to go to this length to prove you are sexy, that probably means you are trying too hard.

    • Vera

      True dat.

  • MzzPants

    Oozes desperation.

  • EEKstl

This is just unfortunate.  “I’m content…I love growing older…I’m 40, and…I’m desperate to prove I am still viable in my chosen career now that I am…”  Eventually Hollywood should figure out that riding the wave of the Boomers is a cash cow.  Any day now.  Any…day…now…

  • Maluca

    This is embarrassing.

  • Jecca2244

i don’t get why everyone is obsessed with Terry Richardson. I just don’t. He captures the umcomfortable of sexuality. He makes it feel gross and wrong.

    • GorgeousThings

True, but he has not a clue that he’s doing it. I’m sure he thinks it’s hot. If he had a smidge of irony, his work might – *might* – be tolerable.

  • GorgeousThings

Poorly shot images straight from the Madonna “Sex” days. I can’t understand why anyone hires Terry Richardson.

Though it is Esquire, so consider the source. It (and he) are a half-step above Maxim. Pfeh.

  • sk8tfan

She’s always struck me as being dumb as a bag of rocks and now she’s confirmed it. She doesn’t need this; she’s worked hard and succeeded in a tough industry and gained credibility; she may have put it all at risk for something incredibly stupid. This photo shoot was beneath her.

  • theblondette

Such awful photos. Especially since Cameron is talking sense. I like that she is honest about not wanting marriage and kids and isn’t ashamed of it. Annoying that she STILL gets asked though. Every interview I’ve read with her for the past decade has asked about marriage & kids, sigh.

  • SewingSiren

Wonder bread. No sex appeal whatsoever.

  • Wendy Lane Bailey

Why isn’t being beautiful, talented, articulate and well put together enough? Why does she have to prove that she’s some adolescent boy’s idea of sexy in order to get noticed? I think the pictures are awful. There’s a difference between sexy and sleazy and these are definitely over the line. They lack subtlety, wit, and any semblance of dignity. The idea of a Heavenly Hollywood Broad Brigade of Davis, Hepburn (both of them) & Taylor swooping down to slap some sense into her is irresistible.

    • Kayceed

I kind of like the idea of Bette Davis slapping Terry Richardson too.

    • Jillian3538

The saddest part is that many adolescent boys viewing these photos would consider her ugly and gross simply because she’s 40.

      • formerlyAnon

Honestly, I think that’s more-or-less fine. I remember thinking a 32 year old was in NO WAY a “young man” when my mom, in her late 50s when I was in my early 20s, referred to one as such.  I think some teens would find her hot, but it really doesn’t bother me that many males who are not yet really adults don’t.

  • kaycem

terry richardson should be forcibly restrained from touching a camera.  ever.

  • SpcilK

  • Mary

Cullings from the discard pile for a Playboy pictorial, methinks.

Cutoff mom-jeans AND split-beaver pose?  (shot 4 from the top) ridiculous.  The open-mouth porno doll dead fisheyes expression is also awful.

Cameron, that is not how you sex.

And yes, why is the individual we’re all discussing allowed anywhere near a functioning camera?

  • minglumama

Yes, she’s lookin’ a wee bit tawdry here…plus, is it just me or is her boob job just not that good?? In shot number 3 she looks HUGE. She is a tall girl, but, really, not a good pick from the editors.

    • GTrain

Horrible boob job. In that last shot you could drive a truck between them.

  • TropiCarla

UGH. The spread-legged shots are THE WORST. The photoshopping of her cleavage is also ludicrously inconsistent from frame to frame. Cam has always had a great body, but she doesn’t have giant boobs. I don’t know how she could possibly sign off on all this. SIGH

  • monapily

    I hate Terry Richardson SO MUCH…it’s just…flames. Flames…on the side of my face…Breathing…breatle…HEAVING breaths…

And I totally thought this was Courtney Love at first glance.

    • baxterbaby

      Madeline Kahn always wins everything!

  • cindy_giang

    • PinkLemon

Not even for his all around crappiness, but, aren’t we all OVER the Polaroid lighting??? It’s EVERYWHERE. And it has been for YEARS now.

  • ojosazules

Whatever, whatever, but, those two shots of her squatting down with her legs spread are HIDEOUSLY VULGAR.

  • VioletFem

    This photoshoot looks so desperate.

    • PinkLemon

       My thoughts exactly.

  • Stuck_on_Mute

The sad thing is, I think she could totally pull off (and I’m sure she already has) a photoshoot where she’s wearing little (i.e. beach/athletic wear) if the focus was on her athleticism, strength, and goofiness – and it would have come across as sexy. I’m just left w/ an icky feeling after seeing this, and feeling sad for her.

    • VioletFem

I would love to see a photoshoot like that!

  • BrooklynBomber

we find ourselves wishing that Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn would ride down from heaven

From your keyboard to God’s ear, TLo. This is awful. Awful, awful, awful. Makes me feel sick and sad.  Thank you, Esquire, Cameron Diaz, and Terry Richardson for reminding us all what really matters. Also: fuck you.

  • Vanja

AMEN! This is one of my pet-peeves. The male-celebs are usually dressed to the nines and all buttoned up, but I think most of the (young) female celebs have one of these Playboy-light type of photos in their portfolio. Can’t stand Uncle Terry’s photography.

  • nancylee61

The butt in the air shots, the open mouth, the squat – all porn star. I do believe Cameron is one of the least talented leading ladies around, but still…this is just gross. She should be ashamed to stoop to this.

  • sterlingrose

Wow oh wow, or should it be wow ho wow….Thanks guys you hit it spot on. That second shot is especially awful – she just looks bad.   It is a cheap porno shot, could be on one of those “dating” sites where you hook up for sex…

  • PeaceBang

Truly depressing. If Cammy wanted to do truly sexy soft core porn shots, she could have done so. These are ugly, distorting, degrading and badly acted, if you know what I mean. She looks like a two-bit hooker being put through her paces for a few bucks. Horrid.

  • nancymae

How does Terry Richardson keep getting work???? Everything he shoots is gross.

  • crackineggs

Et tu Cameron?  Looking like you’re gagging for it is not hot, just desperate.

    Terry Richardson hates women.

  • kolokOlchik

    seriously!  GROSS

  • PinkLemon

You’re forty, you ‘finally feel hot’, blah blah blah. We get it. You’re desperate.

  • Karen

Its Terry ‘skeevy’ Richardson, what else could you expect? I just don’t know why these women celebs keep working with him.

  • annamow

Terry Richardson is über gross. Yuck.

  • Gabriella M

The worst thing about Terry Richardson’s work is that every photo is exactly the same. I’m pretty sure his camera has been set to the same settings for the past couple decades.

And I just can’t stand his sleazeball reputation.

Ugh…Terry Richardsdon is a horrible excuse for a photographer.
I don’t understand the process…someone enlighten me, please.
So, Esquire decides to do an article on (whoever) celebrity.  Celebrity agrees to article.  Esquire hires horrible photographer.  Celebrity has no say over who the photographer is?  I guess any publicity is good publicity, but COME ON!  People are talking, but ewwww.
I just want to know who to blame for this assault on my eyes!

  • snarkykitten

“I’m very capable” as we skip to legs spread wide open

  • granddelusion

Thank you. This is beyond unnecessary.

  • Judy_S

Agree with TLo. I clicked on the thumbnail just so I could type, “WHY?”

  • mozzer0906

Of course this one was done by Terry Richardson.  Seriously Cameron, you make me sad.  Even worse I seem to be more comfortable in my 40s than she is, because I’m not whoring myself out for attention to prove I’m still fuckable.

  • Sarah Caponigro

This could have been done tastefully  and more artistically somehow. Her eyes read that she is NOT buying into this while doing the shooting.

    • BrooklynBomber

The entire message of this is that tits and ass are all that matter. I just don’t see how there’s a way to tastefully reduce a person to the sum of her parts.

  • julnyes

     I just don’t get it.

  • A B

God I loathe Terry Richardson–aren’t his 15 minutes up yet?

  • MissAnnieRN

Yes, very sad.  I’m also sad that Cam and Kate Hudson got implants.  However modest the enhancement may be, they were ladystars and members of the itty bitty titty club, and it is just sad.  I have longed to be more proportional for my whole life and but accepted I am the way that I am and I love myself for it.  I wish they had stayed flatter chested, I liked them better that way.

    • Judy_J

As a lesser endowed woman, I agree with you wholeheartedly.  The whole fixation on breast size is so unhealthy.

  • DesertRodent

    Terry Creeptastic Richardson. Of course.

  • Rhonda Shore

It’s about the least flattering photo shoot i’ve ever seen of her.  Really disappointing.

  • MissAnnieRN

Also – I wonder what Gwyneth will say about her bestie doing this photo shoot?  “Cam, you need to love yourself more.”  She should have consulted with GOOP before agreeing to this shoot because there’s no way GOOP would have advised her to do this.

  • elemspbee

  • GTrain

WOW. I can’t stand her anyway but this is a new low.

  • Joyce VG

    This makes me sad.

  • Ozski

Being 40 doesn’t imply that you have to show everyone your cervix to prove how ‘contented’, ‘self aware’ and ‘capable’ you are. When I turned 40 I enjoyed some ice cream profiteroles. Do that, Cami instead of hanging out with this scummy old weasel.

    • BrooklynBomber

Haha!  “When I turned 40…” Priceless!

    • formerlyAnon

When I turned 40 I was too busy with my life to notice it as a milestone. And that is possibly why I have little interest in seeing or hearing about how a rich, lovely woman is bearing up as she passes this milestone. Even though I recognize that in Hollywood it IS a detriment to a woman’s career.

  • Judy_J

Smacks. Of. Desperation.  I’m embarassed for her.  Really.

  • StelledelMare

    I am weeping for her

  • LesYeuxHiboux

To be fair, Cami has always been a bit of a sexpot. The styling in this is totally tasteless and so is the posing. All the underbutt I’m seeing is making me nauseated. You can be sexy without being seedy, Cam (though I don’t think you can, creepy Uncle Terry).

  • lalahartma

    I so totally agree.

  • lizajane1776

I have never considered her classy, and this makes it oh, so clear.

  • aka Darth Mommy

Why does anyone hire this photographer?  She looks so much less than she is.

  • Kim_W60

    Sad, sad, sad.

  • Ann Martina

JLo is now demanding a similar photo shoot of her own. Desperate Divas in their 40s

  • Snailstsichr

“Sometimes, we find ourselves wishing that Bette Davis, Joan Crawford,
Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn would ride down from heaven in a
chariot drawn by unicorns and slap the shit out of some of the ladystars
of today for buying into the idea that they need to do soft porn photo
    shoots to maintain their careers.”

    Why we love you guys.

  • tereliz

Ugh. Did not even need to see the photo credit to know the photog. Gross, indeed, “Uncle” Terry.

  • Trisha26

Desperate. I have never liked her film work particularly, and now this.

  • Shannon Stewart

My objection isn’t the wardrobe or the posing.  It’s that she doesn’t want to be doing it.  This isn’t something she’s doing because she thinks it’s cool or fun or she’s looking to document it while her body is looking as fantastic as it ever will.  That’s clear by how completely uncomfortable she looks.

  • greyhoundgirl

Awful, awful, awful.  And did I mention sad?

  • Ashleigh Boutelle

What’s gross about this? What ever happened to tongue-in-cheek? This is the era we live in. Who says these photos are only meant to boost her career? And who says these photos contradict Cameron’s acting ability? I see no desperation here, I see power and a sense of humor. I don’t agree with anyone’s criticism of this, but that’s just me.

    • MilaXX

cause looking like a ho is always hilarious

  • MajorBedhead

I can’t believe these words just came out of my mouth, but they did: It’s just vulgar.

    • Tess Danesi

I know! I am the least likely person to judge something as vulgar but this is just gross. Two images of her squatting with her legs spread wide open, one wasn’t enough? OMFG I totally hate Terry Richardson. And her ass cheek being visible from the front is simply not attractive.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I don’t think it’s good when you can see your ass cheek from the front.

  • Heather

Terry Richardson is indeed gross – beyond gross, he’s REPULSIVE. Why does he keep getting work? He’s a terrible photographer even without the offense level. What disappoints me is that these publications, by continuing to use him, are being complicit in sending his misogynist message.

  • Mexxoo

  • Nonmercisansfacon

I feel dirty. Angry. Sad. Just by looking at those pictures. Richardson is ^@#$%^&*9

  • l_c_ann

That she participated in this shows that she IS much less than we thought she was.Mostly sad.  Now add exploited.  Vulgar.

Growing old, with photoshop, not gracefully.

  • tired_mommy

    I’m embarassed for her.

  • LJCdoc

Can Liz, Audrey, Joan, and Bette bitch slap the hell out of Terry Richardson for good measure. Ugh, I always feel like I need a shower any time I look at his “work”.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Sometimes, we find ourselves wishing that Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn would ride down from heaven in a chariot drawn by unicorns and slap the shit out of some of the ladystars of today for buying into the idea that they need to do soft porn photo shoots to maintain their careers.

  • blumonky

Thank you for calling this out as icky. Is there some kind of ladystar as trashy star virus going around? Did Nicole Kidman kiss Cameron lately?

  • Simon P

Haters are gonna hate. If this was a shirtless male, all of you would be drooling gross spittle from your thick lips. Bette Davis and Joan can stay in heaven. The era of female repression is dead and gone. If Cam wants to flaunt her toned body and excite the boys, let her do it. HER BODY, HER PREROGATIVE. Personally, Esquire is not my cup of tea and I much prefer the poised photographs of actresses like Keira Knightley to something like this. But as I said, Cam should do whatever she damn well pleases to do. She is fab, 40 and is currently filming the role of her lifetime (The Counselor). Some of you only wish you looked that good. In fact, if most of you look like at that 40, you’ll be flaunting it too.

    • ChiliP

Please show me the male equivalent of this shoot (outside of Playgirl), and then maybe you can join in on this discussion. This is not the equivalent of “a shirtless male”- that comparison is lost somewhere around the second shot of her crouched on the floor with her legs wide open. The issue isn’t that she’s showing skin and flaunting her body- it’s that it’s displayed in a manner that speaks directly to (and only to) a man’s fantasy about what a woman’s sexuality SHOULD be. And, again, a man would never be asked to do this!

Also, are we really not past the “yall are haters cuz you’re jealous” phase of our discussions? Can that shit stay in high school where it belongs?

    • tereliz

Saying “Haters are gonna hate” is quickly turning into the most annoying opinion on the internet. *eyeroll*

I don’t think anyone here has a problem with Ms. Diaz flaunting the good china… as long as she looks and feels comfortable doing so. If anything, most of the commenters here are expressing their disdain for the photographer. Go back and read the negative comments and you’ll find the name “Terry Richardson” much more often than “Cameron Diaz”.

And just FYI, men love the “gross spittle” drooling from my “thick lips”. Must be because I’m so repressed sexually that I have so little else to offer.

    • Tom and Lorenzo

The fact that you compare this to a picture of a guy with his shirt off demonstrates that you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

Normally, we’d just delete a comment like yours, where people whose opinion differs from your own come in for every insult you can lob at them, but we’re going to leave it up in order to respond to it. We’ll type slowly and try not to use big words.

When we feature a male on this site, in his underwear or in fetish gear, fondling himself, thrusting his crotch into the camera, arching his back, sticking out his ass, and licking his lips, you’ll have a point. But we never have featured such an editorial on this site BECAUSE MALE STARS IN THEIR FORTIES ARE NEVER ASKED TO DO THAT SORT OF THING. THAT’S THE POINT.

      • SRQkitten

Exactly! Thank you for summing this up so succinctly!

I could have guessed this was Terry Richardson just from the stupid poses. ICK.

      • Mary Stone

Gentlemen, can you please give Terry Richardson an automatic “OF COURSE” from now on and leave it at that?

The less notice he and his work gets, the more likely he’ll go away (I fervently hope)

    • Alloy Jane

You must be all of 14 years old to think your response here is remotely logical.  If she had done a spread in playboy, or even Hustler, fully nude and owning it, I’d have more respect for her. But this shit is offensive because here you have a fully grown, adult female with a successful career degrading herself to remain relevant.  There is absolutely no conviction here.  From the lack of depth in the face, to the contrived posing.  This is a sham by all involved.

  • sara

TOM AND LORENZO, THANK YOU!!!!  Posts like these epitomize why I love you guys so much.  Pure trashiness doesn’t translate into style or even anything aesthetically interesting…it illustrates a sad lack of self-respect.

  • jmorino08

Of course Terry Richardson shot this. Why would anyone agree to do a photo shoot anymore? His aesthetic is just so trashy.

  • Vickiefantastico

I saw this earlier today, and I was hoping you would comment on it, and boy, did you ever! Very well said, gentlemen. Can I say I love you guys?

And by the way, as the mother of two young children, a girl and a boy, this absolutely terrifies me. If this spread is regarded as sexy and shows a woman who feels good about herself, what does this mean for our future? How much lower can we go as a society?

  • frannyprof

  • muzan-e

What’s killing me, frankly, is that I’ve seen better – more tasteful – and more interesting editorials in Maxim. Freakin’ Maxim.

Although I guess they didn’t actually call them ‘editorials’.

  • joancarol

Women are their own worst enemy.

  • meowing

Geez Louise.  I’m far from a prude, but seems our society is becoming more crass and vulgar day by day.  She’s a lovely woman who does not need this, either for her career or to stay “current,” so why?  Just cheesy and sad.

  • Alloy Jane

This is just… jesus.  I don’t think women should hide their bodies or feel ashamed, but this is just pandering for the basest sort of attention.  I have a problem with that.

I’ll agree with the person that said Thank You TLo for reassuring us that we’re not bonkers.  Because Terry Richardson should be run through a hay baler.

Also.  Fuck you Hollywood.  Fuck you.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    Well, that’s dispiriting.

    • formerlyAnon

A perfect summation. On several levels.

  • asmith

Agree.  Defensive crouch poses to go with defensive interview.

  • SapphoPoet

    Oh, Cameron, honey…

  • DylanCurtis

Awful. The looks on her face make me think even she felt it was wrong at the time, like she is playing a role, and very poorly.

  • stef lee

I think her quotes are truer to her personality and persona than these pictures – which I’m writing off as Terry Richardson’s gross work and leaving it at that.

  • TieDye64

You guys said it…put on some pants. Close your legs. Terry Richardson….ick.

  • littlemissstrange

Yeah seriously Terry Richardson is not a photographer. He is a pornographer. What is his shit doing in fashion mags?

  • jo

This is just so wrong.  She’s a natural beauty and looks absolutely amazing under normal circumstances.  This is ugly.  It isn’t done with a sense of humor or in the style of burlesque, it’s porn.  Ugly porn.  I feel both sorry for her and disappointed at the same time.

  • olivelovetree

So sad. And she’s in my peer group. What does this say about women who aren’t 20 something anymore? Do we really have to resort to such desperate measures to get attention and media coverage? Sad, sad, sad.

  • Fordzo

I’m shocked.  Doesn’t Terry usually prefer to shoot teens?

  • Zippypie

WTF, Cameron?  Seriously?  Get some self-respect.

  • nannypoo

That second one is especially whorish. Nasty.

  • Hetha Innis

God Terry Richardson pisses me off. Fuck him.

  • Rand Ortega

  • Candigirl1968

    This just depresses me.

  • Lisa

Good lord!  You know, it didn’t bother me so much when Nicole did it, because I still think that was a clear promotional nod to her character in “The Paperboy”.  But this?  Cammy has no excuse!  This is just lame and sad and desperate, and smells like Terry Richardson.  Gahhh!

  • Suzie Vazquez

    oh gross.

  • Jean Albus

  • ccm800

Terry Richardson has ZERO aesthetic. What a scam

  • Haley Buchanan

These are horrible.  She should be embarrassed.  They aren’t flattering, and they aren’t even interesting or shocking or thought provoking in any way.  There are ways for a 40-year-old woman to “prove” that she is still hot – this just isn’t one of them.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s probably time for us to stop thinking this is the way for any younger women to think theyre hot too.
it’s probably been that time for a long while now.

[ie: for the first six months something is daring. the next six months that same something is daring to do in the provinces. the next year the edge is dulled but one might still be able to cut something w/ it. after that it’s just tired, then it’s exhausted. i dunno, after maybe, i guess, five years it’s dead. on our timeline whatever it was comes back twenty years later in, generally & unfortunately lately, a fairly weakened copy. then it sticks around, weaker & weaker, until it dissolves.

this, the abovenoted, showed up i guess in weimar germany, left until the 70s {for the rads} or the 80s {for everyone else} & has yet to disperse. it’s time already. IT IS TIME.]

  • lesmaha

  • margaret meyers

Terry Richardson has no talent and is a grosteque waster of talent … and Diaz is an idiot for doing this.

  • quiltrx

    This is disgusting.  Full stop.

  • jw_ny

    mid-life crisis.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

that last picture is horrible. we all know why, it’s not worth bringing up.

actually, this whole photoshoot is in one way not worth bringing up &, in another way, thats the only worth it has. & if you wanna see bad photoshop it’s right in front of you. not just bad but exceptionally misguided, meaning: it wasnt the temp’s lack of experience that did it but the art director’s directions.

  • carpediva

When I saw the squatting, my instantaneous reaction, so strong I blurted it out loud: “Ewwww, GROSS!!!!!”

And yes, Terry Richardson should have to register with the state so actresses always know his whereabouts and shit like this can’t happen.

  • lrhoff

Wow.  What a disappointing thing to see.  Cameron, dear, get a grip.  Your ex-boyfriend is engaged, and you need to quit trying to outdo that announcement.  I’ve seen her in L.A. in her naturally form, and she’s not really gorgeous without a lot of work.  This is WAY too much effort.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

nobody is really gorgeous w/o a lot of work. thats the biggest joke in all of it.

  • AzulFashion

TLO, you are so right.  This is such a shame.

  • BrightsideSusan

Couldn’t agree more.  How she could make those statements and then pose like that is beyond me. It proves that she can talk the talk but she is too insecure to walk the walk.

  • Yuju Ti

The poses she did for the photos and the statements she said for the interview just don’t match. I am sad too.

  • Jaeda Laurez

Terry Richardson is dark-sided, and you will never be able to convince me otherwise. I can’t.

  • guest2visits

The spread eagle pics are the ones that look really, really bad – not at all sexy; just so awkward and forced.
I don’t mind the other ‘sexy’ poses; it fulfulls a kind of genre or theme-pictorial. I feel she can take it or leave it, as she wishes.
I doubt at this point Cameron is hired for anything but her acting skills and her experience, INSPITE of her prettiness.
These photos don’t feel as developed/artful as the recent Nicole Kidman pictorial.

  • Sweetvegan

I don’t care if she’s 40 or 20. These photos look wrong. I’m all for a woman being sexual and expressing herself, and if this were Madonna (at any age!) I would say she’s expressing herself. But I don’t think this is Cameron Diaz expressing herself. I think this is CD doing what she thinks the magazine wants.

    • Glammie

Yep, that’s part of it.  It’s not her.  There are actress for whom the whole fetish thing works and they’re comfortable playing that vibe.  But Cameron Diaz just doesn’t have decadent Berlin thing going on.  Nor, for that matter, does (vomit) Terry Richardson.  He’s not Helmut Newton and Diaz isn’t Charlotte Rampling.  It’s not provocative, it’s just kind of depressing and stupid.

  • h2olovngrl

I would have a “NO TERRY RICHARDSON” clause in every photo shoot contract if I were as rich and famous as she. Shame on you, Enquire.

  • RzYoung

F*cking hate Terry Richardson with such a passion, I seriously hate him. He’s so talentless.

  • Ms. Bee

Terry Richardson is super gross. The interview is hilarious though. “I’m getting older and I want to get married and be a mommy!! Wanna see my boobs? I’ll be using them to nurse my kiddies soon!” lol, mixed signals Cammy.

  • mbelchic

    Tacky, tacky, tacky-

  • Amy

On having children:”….And anyway, there’s still a possibility of that, I ain’t that old. I’m feeling very… capable.” are capable! And with that comes having respect for yourself and your “maybe future” children’s self respect. And this striptease ain’t it.

  • Shannon Lynch

Terry Richardson is a dirty old man. So incredibly pervy. Should be a photog for American Apparel.

  • EliseC

“Terry Richardson is gross.”  Yes.  This shit makes me sad, too.

  • oohsparkley!

Why did she agree to this?  One open legged, look at my crotch shot was bad enough. Two is two too many. Trashy photo shoot!

  • librarygrrl64

Of COURSE it’s Terry Richardson. [sounds of retching]

  • Nicole

THANK YOU!!!! TERRY RICHARDSON IS GROSS!!!  Why on earth are cool people still working with him???

  • Erin

The problem is, that now that she’s done this shoot, she has essentially told everyone that she wants to be seen as this sex-kitten type person, and she now has to try to maintain that as she ages.  She will either have to succumb to the fully-fake plastic surgery tragedy or she’ll have a very difficult transition into the more mature roles that come with being a woman in her 40’s and 50’s in the film industry.

  • Rebecca

    Burn Terry with fire.

Seriously, he is a total pervert.

    And a bad photographer.

  • Basket

It has something to do with Tom Cruise.

  • Qitkat

Ugh. In my finest, youngest, most toned body, no one could ever have gotten me to pose like this unless I had a paper bag over my head. And probably not then. Cam is acting the antithesis of her comments with being comfortable at turning 40. Sad.

Someone earlier referenced Julianne Moore. I recently re-watched Boogie Nights, a film which still appalls me on many levels, but her vulnerability coupled with a worldly naiveté elevates her nearly nude scenes to something beautiful, not trashy. This spread is trashy.

  • Chelle

Her body looks good, but this is gross and desperate.

  • nicole seligman

    tacky as fuck.

  • Veronika Kaufmann

I agree completely. And so completely and utterly dull, we’ve just fallen asleep. Wake us up when Smash is on.

  • Judih1

AMEN! If this is what she means by forty and fabulous, then she really isn’t comfortable in her own skin
